Charged $50 for an estimate that did not include material cost quote. The labor charge was very high. $106/man-hour that was discounted to $76/man-hour; there was a requirement for 8 hours. $600 total for the day which includes shopping for unestimated materials for which I would be additionally responsible. They never responded to my request for a material estimate. They did show up on time to do the estimate; however, without a material estimate, I consider the estimate incomplete. That said, the labor charge seemed high by itself. So, I am going elsewhere.
Description of Work: I paid $50 for an estimate with the promise of a 17% discount for Angie's list. The estimate I received was for 8 hours labor at $76/hour. Material was not included in the estimate. I contacted JW via email and Angie's list message asking for an estimate that included material. I never received a response.

David St Clair was very knowledgeable, very efficient and very quickly completed the tasks. I had purchased a coupon for a set number of hours and he accomplished all in that time. He was very polite and helpfully explained what he needed to complete the tasks. I was very pleased with everything he did, very neat and everything set up and hung evenly and feels extremely sturdy. I would absolutely use JW again, and would recommend them and David St. Clair for handyman services. This was the first time I used them, only did because of the coupon, and am happy I did.
Description of Work: I had an Ikea closet put together in a guest bedroom, blinds hung in three windows, a large mirror hung on a wall, and coat hooks hung.

Work performed came in way outside the original estimate for no apparent reason (job was not more complicated than originally estimated but they attempted to charge us nearly double.) JW eventually negotiated down the price but it was an unpleasant experience to work with their office. I would expect the estimate given to be within 20 percent unless there were major unknown circumstances discovered after the estimate. I wouldn't trust this company again to estimate a job for me. I need some more handyman work done this spring and we will be using another company. The work they did was good quality and has held up fine. My issue was with the estimator and office staff.

A+++++ Chris Brown was on time, and finished the skylight blinds in about 45 min. He was so efficient that I knew he'd be done the other two tasks well ahead of time so I asked him if he would be able to paint 2 exterior doors and repair some drywall in the bedroom and said while I was sure he wouldn't be able to complete all of these tasks anything he could do within 6 hours would be appreciated. I was so impressed. Chris not only finished up all of the tasks originally planned for, but the additional tasks I just described AND was able to paint an additional exterior door (my mechanical room)! There is a reason I keep using JW Home Improvement. I believe this is my 4th or 5th time. They might not be the cheapest around, but you get what you pay for and honestly with how efficient these guys are and the quality of their work, their rates are very competitive. And even amongst the various handymen sent to my house by JW HomeImprovement, I'd have to say Chris Brown is tops. Very highly recommended.
Description of Work: Used an Angie's list big deal coupon for 6 hours for $402. Needed one skylight blind installed, a flat screen that was wall mounted taken down to insert wires and then paint around that area, and one closer replaced and one added to 2 storm doors.

AWFUL! Beware that Jesse is extremely unethical. His employees at my home, Sam and James both warned me of same. They, in turn, were also unethical. Here is my story: 1) On 16 December, I called JWHI for an estimate. Sam Casim answered and told me he was my "estimator", and came to my home several hours later to evaluate the work I needed done. It was clear when Sam arrived that he was not a contractor, as I knew far more about the details of what needed to be done than he did. Sensing same, Sam suggested he would return with Jesse later in the day and at that time, collect the $50 payment for an estimate. 2) Sam and Jesse later showed up same day. Jesse spent about 30 minutes in my home looking at the job, saying he would get back to me with an estimate. Sam told me that he would drop Jesse off at work, and return to collect the $50. 3) Sam came back same day to inform me that Jesse was going to charge $59,000 for the work to be completed. Sam then said that he would take care of me using Jesse's staff as an authorized "side job", and get the job done for $12,000 in 3 weeks with a one week contingency. Sam told me not to worry, that if anything at all happened, he was working under Jesse's MHIC number. Sam told me that Jesse carried a $2Million dollar insurance bond, and had an additional $1Million dollar "slush fund" for jobs that went bad to avoid insurance claims. Sam also assured me "not to worry", as he had done with with 12 other customers of JWHI where the JW estimate was far too high for the amount of work to be done. 4) Sam and I agreed to a "pay for performance" contract, where I would pay Sam $3000/week for work that was adequately completed. If at any time, the work was subpar, I had the option to decrease payments as I thought fit and hold the last payment until completion. With these multiple assurances, I accepted Sam's offer, assured that JWHI and Jesse himself would do the right thing should anything happen at the job site. on 16 December, I gave Sam $50 for the "estimate" from JW (which I only received verbally from Sam), and an additional $250 cash for "tools and supplies" for his employees Charles and Will who I also met that same evening. 5) Sam and his team arrived to start work on 2 Jan 2017. Within very short order, it was clear that Charles did not know what he was doing. Charles ripped out all the drywall in the basement when it was not required. Charles ripped out all the electric which had already been run and was hot from my original contractors--again, doing work that was not required. 6) Though I paid for the first week of work in full, it was clear that other than unnecessarily demo my home, no progress had been made on my project. I informed Sam that I would be paying him less the following week. At this point, Sam, Charles, and Will had spent in excess of $2000 at Home Depot in supplies, and I had paid $3000 as per our agreement. Sam arrived at my home daily in his JWHI sweatshirt, and identified himself as a JWHI employee the entire time he was at my home. 7) After the second week of work revealed relatively little progress, Sam informed me that he would be bringing another JWHI employee to the job site, James Williams. By the end of the second week, I had given Sam nearly $6000 in cash including additional Home Depot purchases by Charles and Will. 8) At the end of the second week, I fired Charles who was clearly incompetent. At the start of the 3rd week, I requested to Sam and James to fire Will who was also clearly incompetent. Neither took action on this request until the end of week 3 when it became apparent that Will was incapable of doing anything correctly. By this time, I had given Sam over 65% total funds toward the full project fee. At this point, Sam had still been coming to my home daily in the evenings to judge progress and attempt to keep me "quiet", and not talk to Jesse. 9) During week 4, James brought in 2 additional workers who showed up sporadically, and never worked a full day. Sam, at this point, had stopped responding altogether to texts, phone calls, and emails. James was in my home daily to assess progress, and each time, he was wearing his JWHI uniform, and also held himself to be a JWHI employee on my job. 10) During weeks 5 and 6, I made no further payments. At this point, I was beyond frustrated, and was putting together a formal MHIC complaint against JWHI. Both Sam and James implored me not to talk to Jesse, as they were afraid they would be fired. 11) Three weeks ago, I called JWHI and left a message due to the disaster that my job had become. No progress had been made, the money had nearly been entirely spent, and both Sam and James had been unresponsive to project needs writ large. Sam erased that message, but the software system at JWHI notified someone that Sam had attempted to erase the voice message I left. 12) Upon finding this out, I informed Sam that I would be taking legal action. He finally went to Jesse's home on a Saturday to "confess". I understand that Jesse fired Sam and James 3 days later. I also found out that Sam and James had been in the process of using the prior 12 clients and myself as references with an outside investor to start their own business. By late February, I found out from James that Sam had at least one additional client to myself, bringing the total number of clients to 14 that he had done "side work" for under JW's MHIC number, and with JWHI staff. 13) That week that Sam and James were fired, I went to the JWHI office on a Friday morning, wanting to talk to Jesse and see what he would do for me. He was polite, and agreed to come to my home to see the residual damages left by his two workers. Jesse came to my home with another employee from his office on Saturday morning to take a look at what was remaining. 14) Two days later, Jesse himself informed me that he would not stand by the promises made by HIS VERY OWN EMPLOYEES, and has refused to finish the work on my home. 15) I am now out $10,000+, and will be forced to take action to recover damages. DO NOT WORK WITH JESSE. HE IS UNSCRUPULOUS. HE DOES NOT MANAGE HIS PEOPLE WELL. HE WILL NOT DO THE RIGHT THING WHEN PUSHED TO DO SO.
Description of Work: I contacted JWHI due to the Angie's list recommendations. My original contractor had walked out on my basement reno which included stair refinishing, tiling of under 200 sq feet of basement floor, creation of an under-stair reading nook, and an updated bathroom in the same footprint at prior bathroom. When the original contractors left, what remained was the following: 1) patch, tape, mud, sand and paint drywall 2) build under-stair reading nook 3) clean and grout basement floor tile, 4) complete tile in bathroom, install vanity, sink, mirror, hardware, bath storage cabinets, shower column, grout, and complete drywall and paint

JW Home Improvement takes consumer complaints very seriously. But this person was NOT a customer of JWHI. The consumer chose not to contract with JW Home Improvement. Instead the consumer, to apparently save money, went around JWHI, and struck a "side deal", without the owner's knowledge. The consumer hired directly two individuals who worked for JWHI. JWHI cannot speak to what the consumer was told by these individuals, because JWHI was not involved. JW Home Improvement was not aware of this incident until after the consumer had her interaction with these two individuals. Again, JWHI did not contract with the consumer, JWHI did not do the work, and JWHI was not involved. These individuals have since been terminated. The consumer, who went around JWHI, by hiring its employees directly, when the work was not preformed to the consumers' satisfaction, contacted JWHI and demanded JWHI do the entire job for a fraction of the cost. JWHI declined to do so. The consumer's post should serve as a warning to all consumers that they should not attempt to hire directly employees from a licensed contractor to save some money, because in the end it may cost them more and they will not have a licensed company backing the work. JWHI did not believe it was the company's obligation to correct this consumers' issues with work performed without the company's knowledge. If this homeowner would have hired JWHI to do the work, as exemplified by our many positive reviews, we are confident the consumer would have been satisfied if not thrilled with the work, and we would stand behind it 100%.

Work by Raymond and Oscar was professionally done. They arrived earlier than time quoted me, immediately began working. They kept us informed and involved the entire time. Best of all they cleaned up after themselves (sweeping and vacuuming). That doesn't happen very often. My next project, I will use JW Home Improvements and request Rymond and Oscar. Great job Guys!!! 👏🏾👍🏻
Description of Work: The EXCEPTIONAL, OUTSTANDING Craftsman Team do Raymond and Oscar built a cabinet to hold my microwave with 3 drawers beneath it. They also relocated the electrical box in the event we ever wanted to replace the microwave for easy access for us. It was better than I imagined. The listed to what I wanted then took that vision and expanded on it. The also trimmed and put in a base cabinet to fill the space that once housed a dishwasher.

The shower looks new. These guys provided awesome service. Everyone from Matt, who took my calls, to the people who came out to do the work were all great. Prompt, professional, polite and very service oriented--something that is too rare nowadays. It was a smaller job where I used an Angie's deal but would not only be willing but eager to hire them again for any job.

This company was great. The estimator came when he said he would. He efficiently reviewed what I needed done and explained how his employees would do the job. He scheduled the work within a few days based on my preferences. They came on time and worked diligently throughout the day. They did everything I needed. The painting was so professional (and quick). The painter corrected work I had done earlier during a renovation. They even disposed of my old paint so I would not have to. The JW people are very professional and courteous-- this includes JW's account manager who had the job of laying out their legal position and telling me to sue them or shut-up because in their opinion JW has no risk or exposure and so no motivation to do anything in the name of customer service or keeping an existing customer. My low rating is related to the stance and policy of JW management and ownership when clearly in the wrong. I hired JW to install a garage door in the back of my row house in DC. The work took much longer than estimated and there were many delays during the project-- however, JW kept me in the loop on what was a supplier issue and I appreciated that professionalism. Fast forward a 13 months or so (an important point because JW has a year warranty and apparently consider any issue a warranty matter after that time) and the door was stuck in the up position. This had happened a few times previously, but seemed to work itself out. I was happy to pay JW to come and fix the issue, but was informed that they no longer do garage doors and went with their recommended vendor. The vendor came out and immediately diagnosed the problem as originating from the wrong part being ordered and installed-- the wrong part was the entire bottom section of the door. This is a pretty major fault. The third party vendor was able to do a work around. I called JW to inform them that they had installed the wrong part. I was told that this would be escalated and I would be called back. This did not happen. A couple weeks later-- same. A couple later-- same. Today, I finally spoke with someone who provided clarity on why I was never getting a call back from JW. They will do nothing. Since the garage door worked when they finished the project, since I did not know enough about garage doors to identify that major part of the door was in fact the wrong part and was installed anyway without my knowledge or consent, and because the issues caused by the wrong part was not identified within the year warranty-- it was no longer JW's issue. Further, JW said they could not even do anything if they wanted to-- which they did not, because the issue was identified by a third party and not JW (JW again no longer does garage doors and sent me to the third party) and because the third party serviced the door. The first couple times I called, the person I spoke with thought that some type of credit could be issued that I could use for another project and I was happy with that solution-- I thought it was fair. If anything further happens with the garage door because the entire bottom lip and sensor was the wrong part and was installed anyway-- I will have to pay out of pocket. I was now clearly told that JW would not in anyway acknowledge responsibility for the issue, would not acknowledge that the wrong part of installed because it was identified by a third party and they will not send anyone from JW to look at the door to verify, and that this issue (wrong major part installed) was really a warranty issue because I acknowledged that the door worked when the workers left, and it was past the 12 month period. I trusted JW to do the right thing and it did not happen. I don't consider knowingly installing the wrong part a warranty issue-- I am not an expert on garage doors, but apparently it was obvious to the third party. Would things have been differed if the malfunction happened within the 12 month period-- I think so. In the end, I am very dissatisfied with the way I have been treated after the issue was identified and I am unhappy with the resolution. Take away to others: Understanding JW's policy better, I should have and recommend to anyone choosing JW to call for any issue no matter how minor so there is a record of problems during the first year.

They arrived on time no scheduling issues. Both guys that came out were very pleasant and friendly. They did great work, everything looks so nice and they cleaned up pretty well after working which I appreciated. I do recommend!
Description of Work: I found JW Home Improvement on my own but glad to see they are already with Angie's List! They Installed an over the range microwave in my home, as well as some wall repair in the bathroom and I am already hiring them again!

It went extremely well! The entire team -- Josh and Telly, the project managers and estimators, and the handymen Alberto and Kevin -- were very professional, knowledgeable and capable. Josh and Telly arrived right on time to estimate the job. They explained all of the costs up front, and of course honored the savings coupon from Angie's List in the estimate. On the day of the repair, Kevin and Alberto arrived right on time and started on the work immediately. They worked quickly and efficiently, did all the work required on time. They discussed possible repair options on the jobs, followed my wishes and did an excellent job on each. They completed the work right on time, and cleaned up after themselves thoroughly. I will definitely use JW Home Improvement again.
Description of Work: I had a number of demanding jobs -- adjusting my front door so that the dead bolt slid properly and reattaching the door trim, installing a dimmer switch, fixing and rehanging a broken screen door, rehanging and centering a tapestry in my dining room, adjusting a back yard fence gate and repairing a damaged door casing and trim leading from my family room to the garage.

Josh arrived on time and did a thorough job on the estimate. He gave me extra time and assisted with a computer search to choose the correct sliding barn doors for the project. He was super to work with. Matt and Sam provided great customer service over the phone as we coordinated the work date. Glenn and Wilder were the team who came to do the work. The lighting was installed with no problems. The barn doors were difficult because the apartment had steel studs instead of wooden studs. Glenn was able to design and execute a work-around that not only works very bit also looked good. Great team, excellent company as always. This is the only home improvement company I use.
Description of Work: Had 6 ceiling lighting fixtures changed and a set of interior sliding barn doors installed in our apartment.

Jesse was on time and did a very thorough estimate as well as offering some great suggestions on the work. James helped coordinate the work through the customer service line and was very helpful with all of my questions. Justin did the work and he was excellent. He arrived early, worked steadily, finished quicker saving us money and did superb work on all of the projects. Great company and super people.
Description of Work: Had numerous small projects to take care of based on the home inspection for selling our house. Had a garbage disposal line rerun, a leak in a bathroom sink repaired, a leaking valve replaced for a water line, had a pull-down attic staircase reinstalled to manufacturers spec, and had all the bolts tightened in our deck.

It went great. One employee got it all done it about 4hrs. The new caulk and grout looked perfect. It caulking was neatly done. And I really appreciated how the gentleman brought his own vacuum and cleaned up from his work. I'll definitely use JW again!
Description of Work: They came and replaced the caulking on two tubs and filled in some missing grout.
