 + 0 moreThey came to my home at the time negotiated and surveyed what I wanted completed. Within a couple of days, I had an estimate sent to me by email and then I was able to quickly negotiate the days the work would be completed. The owner was available to me via cell phone if I had any questions and brought the painter to the house the first day to review what needed to be done. The work was completed within the time frame requested and the owner was flexible as some of the work expanded a bit over what was initially discussed.
Description of Work: S & J Painting and Remodeling painted several rooms for me and also did handyman type tasks. They really worked with me since I requested that the services be done within a very short time frame. Jerry, the owner, was very responsive to my requests. I had used this company back in 2004 and was pleased again with their work in 2009.

 + -1 moreS and J was terrific to work with. The estimate was prompt and reasonable, and the work was completed in spite of the weather not cooperating at all. To finish before the winter set in, they sent a large crew the day Thanksgiving Day, because the weather warmed up. The quality was excellent, and communication excellent. I will use their services again.
Description of Work: Exterior painting including washing, patching and painting stucco and staining wood. In addition patched a roof leak and repaired interior wall that was damaged.

 + -1 moreMy husband and I have been renovating for almost a year now. We had already done a lot of painting and were just plain tired. We decided to hire S&J to finish up the painting in our townhouse. We were in a time crunch and Jerry was able to get Carlos to my house in less than a week. Jerry was very responsive and very customer service driven. Carlos was the painter, was detail oriented ,and did a fabulous job on painting our home. It was a three day job, and Jerry stopped in every day to make sure I was happy with the work being done. There was a little bit of a language barrier with Carlos, but he got what I wanted and did a great job. I would absolutely recommend S&J and will be probably be using them to help me finish my basement!
Description of Work: Painting a second coat on one stairwell going to first level of the house, 2 coats on another stairwell going to 3rd level of the house, painting of kitchen, a small bathroom, touch up ceilings, and all trim.

 + 1 moreOnce Jerry provided us with the estimate, Carlos was immediately available to start the work.
Description of Work: My husband and I purchased an older home from 1962. The original wallpaper and wood paneling were up in the home when we purchased it. We had Jerry come out and give us an estimate to remove the wallpaper in three rooms and three bathrooms. He told us that the bedrooms would require a lot of labor and be very difficult to remove. My husband and I made the decision to try the wallpaper ourselves and hire Jerry for one room of wallpaper removal and help with prepping two other rooms for painting. My husband and I were easily able to remove the wallpaper from all three bathrooms and two of the bedrooms with little difficulty and not much time required. Once Jerry provided us with an estimate we did not see him again until it was time to pay the bill at the end of the service. He sent Carlos instead. Carlos is a very professional worker although English is not his first language. He came without supplies to prep the rooms for painting and was unable to communicate with us the supplies he needed so instead we had to spend a couple of hours taking him to home depot to buy the supplies. It was a waste of half of day of work. We used Carlos to paint one room and mud and tape new drywall in two other rooms. He is an excellent mud and taper of drywall. He did a fantastic job of taping and sanding. He is not the neatest of workers though and we did spend a lot of time cleaning the floors of plaster behind him and the house of dust from sanding the walls. He also repaired the holes in the ceiling of one room and then left on the final day without ever painting it. He is a decent painter. The walls look awesome, but the ceiling you can see a lot of the roller marks. Jerry was available by cell phone during the whole project. He told us that he was going to stop by the project to check in on Friday and we never saw him. The only time we did see him was when he wanted to get paid for the project.

 + -1 moreWent like clockwork from beginning to end. Jerry and his team were ALWAYS punctual. They were very conscientious and careful with my furnishings, floors, etc. I felt comfortable leaving them here alone and even left my dog here with them when I had a Dr. appointment. I would definitely call them if I had any more work to do.
Description of Work: Company painted 1st floor entry hall, dining and living rooms, bathroom. Also did all stairwells (4 floors), master bath and bedroom as well as loft studio. They did all ceilings, moldings and doors. They did extras such as patching 3 large holes with dry wall and lots of little odds and ends. They stripped my front door of paint that had had sand added to it(?) by the former owner and then re-painted it.

I called the hotline to see if there were any complaints and there were. The did not follow through. The people seemed very nice they just did not follow through.

Description of Work: Lots of wall repair in a 1950's plaster house, painting all but one room, ceilings, etc. Used Duron paints.

The owner suggested that we use an off-white for the walls and a bright white for the trim--this contrast worked extremely well and we are very pleased with the results.

 + -1 moreI had a leaking front door and I called S&J for an estimate. Bob arrived and was very honest and professional. He found the area that was leaking water but assured me that the damaged was not as bad as we had first thought. He gave me a couple of options and was detailed in his assessment. He was very professional and personable at the same time. It's hard to find a good general remodeler these days and I almost wanted to find more work so that I could use this company. In the end though, he told me that there was a simple solution to the problem and that it would be an easy do it yourself job. I thought we would be out a ton of money for an extensive job. What an honest company. Kudos. I'll definitely be calling back!

Jerry was very professional in his assessment of the work to be done and provided a verbal estimate while he was here. He followed up with an email confirmation of the proposal the following day.
Description of Work: Jerry came to our house to give us an estimate for wallpaper removal. We didn't end up using his company this time, but I would certainly consider them for future projects.

 + -1 moreJerry came promptly for an estimate. He explained they would sand and prime cabinets, paint and that the job would take a number of days. And since his rate is by the day plus materials, he quoted me $1500 for the cabinets and $300 for the rest of the room. He said Carlos would be able to start by the end of the week. In the end, they decided to use a primer that didn't require sanding, so Carlos completed the cabinets in two days, and the rest of the room in one. Jerry agreed that I should have not had to pay for 4-5 days and was able to assauge my concerns regarding price. Carlos was very friendly but not terribly detail-oriented. I had to point out spots he'd missed like the inside doors of the cabinets (which were still dark brown instead of white) or about half of the cabinet door edges. I neglected to remove one outlet cover (I forgot: it was behind the refrigerator) And he painted over it and then put the cord back in when it was wet. He cleaned his brushes in my utility sink and didn't rinse the drain, so the paint dried in the drain. So the first time I ran the washing machine (which empties into the utility sink) the water overflowed all over the laundry room! The paint job did look good in the end. However I gave a B because I felt that I had to keep a close eye on him and the overflowing utility sink was a major hassle.
Description of Work: They painted my kitchen cabinets 2 coats primer and 2 coats of paint. They also painted the rest of the room ceiling, walls, pantry, and trim.

 + -1 moreI had called the number listed for S and J on Angie's List. The recorded message sounded as if I had reached a private home. Nevertheless I left a message to call me about work at my home. I also looked up S and J in the phone book and left a message at that number. A gentleman named Mr. Dix (Jerry) responded to both calls. I explained that I had a number of projects in mind, but my first project would be installing vents in my ductwork in the basement so that heating and air conditioning would be accessible there. He said that he would have "Bob" get back to me. In his second call he reiterated that Bob would call, maybe even that very evening. Bob never called. That is the extent of my contact with S and J- they just wasted my time. No money was ever involved.

He made notes of what was needed and when he returned to complete the work, he brought the necessary tools and hardware to make the repairs. I was very impressed with Steve's professionalism and work ethic. He worked quickly, accurately, answered my questions and was always pleasant. He actually completed more work than I had included in my original list and still finished the job under his original cost estimate. I would definitely call him again. In fact, I'm already building my list for his next visit.
Description of Work: I had a number of small projects that had built up including; fixing a bathroom shower door, adjusting a door that had was sticking after some water damage, replacing light fixtures, and adjusting/replacing hinges on my kitchen and bath cabinets. While the projects were small, I needed something done in almost every room of my house.

 + 0 moreStephen did all the work himself, and arrived promptly every morning. He tore out and disposed of the old carpeting, installed a prefinished Bruce hardwood floor, and widened the doorway. The work took 5 days, a little longer than he anticipated, I think, but he wouldn't change the original price he had quoted for the work. The new 3' wide door opening is an improvement over the old 29" opening and the new floor is gorgeous! Stephen is very pleasant and I was impressed with his work. I would be very happy to have him do other jobs that need completing on a 23 yr. old house.
Description of Work: I needed a door opening widened so that I would be able to move a sofa into what had once been a bedroom off my kitchen. I also wanted a hardwood floor to replace the old carpeting. S & J Handyman Services had Stephen Brownley contact me, which he very promptly did. Within two days he was at my house, surveyed what needed to be done, and discussed the possibilities. He called back within a few days and gave me a quote for the work which I considered extremely reasonable. He had found flooring that would match the engineered hardwood floor I had in the kitchen. He was able to begin the work the following week.
