They were very conscientious and did a very good job. They pressure washed the house. They painted all the trim and soffits, and also one room inside my house. The only problem was that they ran out of paint and I had to pay additional to get more paint. The quality of their work was very good and I was very pleased with their service. Our cost came to $4850 and was $400 above the original estimate. This is because they needed more stain to complete the staining of our cedar siding. We were disappointed at having to pay the additional amount as we had chosen this company based both on their ratings on Angies' List and the estimate. But overall they did a good job. I was surprised that the owner Jerry Dix did not come by for a final walk thru but asked us to do that with the painter Nehum and to give him the check. Nehum was a good worker and listened to our concerns and went over areas that needed to be painted over. After the power washing a lot of our window sills and screens were dirty and he did clean them off. Missed one window that he said he would take care of the last day but we both forgot. Also 3 pieces of trim on our bay windows were to be replaced and was not done. I do think though it is always a good idea for the owner to come by on the last day and talk to the customer before collecting the check. Still we will consider this company for future work and will recommend them to others.
Description of Work: They painted the exterior of my house.

Jerry was very patient as I kept changing how much of the house I want painted, and provided updated estimates. Although it would take him a several days (sometimes up to a week or so) to provide me with the updated estimates, I had contacted him more than a month in advance, so I was never really pressed for time. Two painters arrived on the agreed time, and they finished on time. Furthermore, after painting the wall to the master bedroom on day 2 of the 3 day job, we decided that we didn't like how the color turned out. I went out and purchased another color the next morning after talking over this with Jerry, and the guys repainted with the new color without additional charge since they were able to finish the job on the original finish date. No complaints. These guys are professional, reasonably priced, and punctual.
Description of Work: Painted walls and ceiling for master suite (including closet and master bath), walls only of two additional bedrooms, and walls above the chair rail of the living room, dining room, and foyer.

They were very considerate of my tight schedule. The contract was straight forward. I did specify the colors I wanted and company. However, the paint store mislabeled the cans of paint and they had to repaint one room because it was yellow instead of ivory and a yellow study doesn't work for us. When I called the error to Jerry's attention he was very good about it. He said I should get the color I asked for for certain. In the end the rooms looked terrific and were done in time for me to get the house cleaned up for impending visitors.
Description of Work: I had a study and porch painted. The study had extensive hole pops and damage from paintings being hung that needed repair.

Jerry was very responsive to my first phone call. He came out and gave me an estimate. He was very nice and extremely easy to work with. Once we settle on a time frame, Jerry kept me updated as to when he would exactly be able to start the work. The two painters he sent over were very nice, quiet, hardworking and very detailed. When the work was done and they had left I discovered a couple of small areas that needed some redo and I called Jerry. He immediately sent one of the guys over within a day or two and the areas were done. All in all I was very impressed with Jerry and his workers. I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking to have a paint job done.

Big job for Jerry & his immediate crew & sub-contractors. Electrician, painters, dry wall & plumbing went great. A little trouble with the general carpenter(a sub-contractor) - not showing up on the job, rushing through on key items- pocket doors hung and finshed poorly. Jerry responded with his own employees who corrected the rush work. Jerry & his immediate crew are great to work with. He came into a situation that was difficult and accomplished the job in the time frame we agreed on and the quality of the over-all work was great. His employees- the painters/dry wall guys were great. They are really all around ahndymen who completed many tasks that were assigned to them- by the contract and also by our needs as the project was completing. I cannot recommend Jerry and his company enough. This report has been a little delayed only due to my procrastination . The few nicks on the report are only directed at the carpenter sub- not for any other work or for Jerry's direct employees.
Description of Work: Jerry and his sub's came in on a reconstruction job that was stahled due to prior contractor doing bad work. Jerry and his estimator came into the project with realistic goals and a good estimate for completion. We ran into the normal bumps during the project but Jerry worked with us to control these bumps and keep the job on track. Basically came in to job that was at the infancy stage and completed the work - the project stopped at the shell of the 3rd floor, 2nd floor demo, 1 first floor demo- except the Kitchen & bath. They completed a rebuild from the bottom-up: plumbing, electric, stairs, dry wall & painting. 3 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, 3 stairwells. Big job for Jerry and his crew but they pulled it off and it is great.

The entire interior-painting experience was an excellent one. I telephoned Jerry Dix, the company's owner, and he returned my call the same day. We agreed on a day and time when he would come to our home to provide an estimate. We walked through the house so that he could garner information about the number of rooms and size of the rooms to be painted. A day or two later, he provided us with a written estimate. (We received an estimate from another top-ranked Angie's List interior painter, but S & J's bid was lower.) The two-man work crew arrived promptly on the agreed-upon start date. The two painters epitomized professionalism. Not only were they outstanding interior painters, but also they were consistently prompt, reliable, courteous, and considerate. After moving furniture, taking down drapes, placing drop cloths, and taking other precautionary steps, the two-man painted six large rooms completely, the large entry foyer, and four bathrooms and one powder room. Also, they repaired dry wall and touched up walls throughout the house. After they completed the painting, they cleaned up the areas and repositioned furniture. When the project was almost completed, Jerry paid a customer-satisfaction visit. We assured him that we were more than satisfied; we were ecstatic. The inside of our house had been transformed. Our formerly all-white interior walls are now BEAUTIFUL! They have color and warmth!
Description of Work: S & J Custom Painting and Remodeling painted six large rooms, a large entry foyer, four bathrooms, and one powder room. Also, S & J repaired dry-wall cracks because of house settling, did touch-up painting throughout the entire house, and painted our front door in a different color after priming it.

Jerry came to give an estimate and it was easy to tell that he knew what he was talking about. He gave us options for pricing, doing the job to last in the longrun vs. a quick fix. He seemd very experienced and gave us an estimate within one or two days. John did the actual work over a period of two days. He too, seemed very experienced and took his time to do the job right and well. He wasn't in a hurry to just get finished and move on. It seemed like he was proud of the work he was doing and the finished condition represents this well. Both, John and Jerry called me and returned phone calls promptly throughout the process. I will definitely be contacting them again soon for various future projects.

Time frame was kept to. Workers were professional and friendly. Job was completed on time with no problems or complaints. Overall, very pleased with the job.
Description of Work: Had two very small and old rooms in an addition transformed into one large modern utility/craft room. New plumbing and electricity was added as well as a double bowl laundry/utility sink. Hook ups for electric stove and washer dryer were added. Two small vinyl replacement windows were installed. Under flooring was added to strengthen the floor before adding new tile. Rear entry door was made weather-tight. All new drywall installed and painted.

Bottom Line: Jerry and his team at S&J Painting did quality work, on time, and under budget. Pros: Quality, Price, Customer Service, Flexibility, Responsiveness Cons: Jerry had on a baseball cap of a sports team I didn't like, if i remember correctly. S&J did outstanding work for a great price. They were very responsive to last minute changes and snafus from other contractors. They went out of their way to make sure that we were happy and came in on time and under budget. We will be hiring them for all of our painting projects from now on.
Description of Work: S&J painted 2 bedrooms, one wall in a third bedroom, all of our hallways, stairwell, family room, kitchen, dining room, living room and the baseboards in 2 bathrooms. They did all of this in 3.5 days. S&J purchased the paints for us, once we had given them the color choices.

Jerry was very responsive - he followed up from my call last fall (I appreciated that he didn't do the work last fall as it was too late in the season & might've impacted quality). As soon as I said I was ready to move ahead, he had his crew out in 3 days. They were professional, worked efficiently, adapted to the weather (it rained a few times during the course of the work). Nahum quickly did the additional work I requested (my bathroom). Some things I would do differently: I should've made sure I clearly understood the contract - at the end of the work, Nahum asked me if we were going to do the doors. I didn't know they were included & didn't have the paint for them, so they didn't get done. I didn't know they would have been included. Also - the paint has already started to chip on my front steps. We let the paint 'cure' for over 24 hours... I will touch those up at the end of the summer. Also - see below for cleanup.
Description of Work: S&J reglazed my downstairs windows & scraped & painted my front & back porches. While they were here I asked them to regrade the plaster & paint in my bathroom

Mr. Dix responded to my inquiry right away and came out to do an estimate. He was very friendly and courteous and made recommendations on the type of finish to use (eggshell vs. flat, etc.). The painter, Carlos, did a very thorough job. He smoothed out areas where the wallpaper was so you could never tell it was there.
Description of Work: Rearranged furniture to access areas to be painted. Spackled as needed. Painted baseboards, walls, ceilings, doors and trim in living room, dining room, hallway and kitchen. Painted walls, baseboards, door and trim in bathroom. Removed hideous wallpaper borders and glue from bathroom and kitchen.

I submitted my request on their website online. It took about a week before they got back to us to schedule a visit for an estimate. Bob Sloan came out to take a look at the work to be done. He took notes, and emailed an estimate to me within two days. He was thoughtful and professional so we hired him to do the work. It was scheduled within a week. He brought a total of four people. The carpentry in the attic was done in a few hours, but the electrician took quite a while to install the lights since it was a tight squeeze in some places, and there were some unexpected firebreaks in the walls. Bob came back the next day to patch up the holes in the walls. Overall they did a very nice job and were very polite and professional. We had a little trouble deciding how to arrange the lights in the living room and Bob and the electrician gave us their recommendations and we are very happy with the result.
Description of Work: We have an addition to our house with no attic access. There is a blower in the attic for the heat pump, which was inaccessible for maintenance. We wanted a hole cut into our old roof to access the blower. We also wanted recessed lighting installed in the living room.

Someone came to give an estimate promptly. There were a few weeks of delay before the job was started. I could have been better prepared if I'd been given an exact start date. Cabinets, vanity, and light fixture were chosen by the contractor. This was a great help to me, as I am disabled and cannot drive. But I would probably have chosen a somewhat higher grade of product. However, I was very happy to have someone work with me on this issue. Decided again a small-sized dishwasher due to price, which is one reason the final price was lower than the estimate. The paint job was superb, better than expected. Steven and Jose were courteous, hard-working, flexible, and always open to my input. A few minor items were left outside and got rained on -- but that is mostly because I have limited space and there was nowhere else to put the things that went outside. My unusual color choices were accommodated. Steve returned to correct some minor problems without complaint. Overall, a positive experience, and I would use them.
Description of Work: Installed new kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanity and light fixture, ventahood over stove. Painted living room, bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom. Installed ceramic floor tiles in kitchen and bathroom.

Jerry promptly answered my first call and arrived to give me an estimate in short order. I went through the parts of my home that needed painting, asked for two coats on walls and trim and pointed areas that needed repair or special attention. I wasn't sure about taking down wallpaper in the hall and asked Jerry to give me an outside estimate of the cost to remove the old wallpaper and paint the walls. I later decided to have him paint the walls. The actual cost was $100. less than Jerry's estimate. His references were good, his price was right, so we settled on a start date. His workers showed up on time and worked consistently until after 5 each day. My family worked together to remove all of the pictures and furniture. The painters helped us remove some of the larger items. I have a number of oriental rugs, but the painters covered everything with dropcloths and I have not found any paint on the rugs or the hardwood floors. I put sticky notes near the inevitable drips or bare spots. It didn't take long for the painters to catch on and after a while, they automatically fixed any mistakes. If there was any downbeat to an otherwise well executed job, it was that it took longer, required more man hours, than originally planned. However, we agreed to a small adjustment in the price. I got a quality job for a good price and I would hire S & J again without reservation.
Description of Work: S&J painted my two story entrance hall, hallway, living room, dining room and kitchen. Included were about twenty windows, sashes and mullions, and built in bookshelves. There was considerable preparation involved; drywall seams needed to be pulled out, re-taped and sanded. There were many nail and picture hooks that needed to be spackled and sanded. Old linen wallpaper was stripped, and the walls beneath the paper were sanded and primed. They took great care with the preparation, which I think is the key to a great job, and the end result showed the effort.

Three people, John, Gene and Adam, showed up at about 9:30 on 2/19. They were all three unfailingly pleasant and polite to deal with through out the entire project. I had written the check to S&J, but John asked me to rewrite it out and make it out to him, so he could pick up the needed materials. He and Gene left to get the stuff, and Adam remained to start prepping for the painting. While they were here they worked the whole time, but I must admit that I did not expect days that started around 9:30 and were over around 3 PM, with a break for lunch. They came back the next day (2/20 - without Gene the carpenter) painted, mudded the dry wall. But not done yet - came back on 2/24 and finished. The room looked good, but they were messy as they worked, and cleanup took them a while, but I was pretty happy with the job. I gave them the second half of the monies, this time made out to S& J. However, the work on painting the foyer couldn't be done that day - so we scheduled for 2/27. John and Adam showed up, and by that time, I had been able to look in detail at the sawdust mess on my front porch (where they cut the wood) and the paint drips on my carpet, and find the window that was painted shut. So I told that about all that, and in between the two of them painting, they did clean up everything I pointed out. They finished the job, and I paid the additional $200.00, making the check out to John.
Description of Work: I left a message for Jerry Dix(company owner) on 2/9, and he called me back within two days. I asked for someone to give me an estimate for adding a closet and a door on a room in my house. John came out on 2/11 and looked and measured and gave me a verbal estimate that included painting the room. I asked for something in writing and he took my email address. John was pleasant and polite and seemed to be knowledgable, and told me they could do the work in the next week and he thought it would take 2 1/2 days. On 2/17 I received an official looking contract by computer with a price of $1600.00 (John's estimate) with 1/2 down at start and 1/2 at completion. I called to ask when they could start, and John called me back to set up a date to start on 2/19. I asked about time, and I thought he told me about 8:30, since the carpenter would have to come in and remeasure to be sure, they would pick up the 1/2 down check, and then they would have to go get the materials. Done, work done - and then I realized that the foyer (the outside of the door installed was now in need of a paint job! So I agreed to having this done for an additional $200.00. No contracts were ever signed by anyone.

It was a very pleasant experience. We had had several estimates prior to Jerry's, but his seemed to be the most reasonable & comprehensive. After contacting him to tell him of our decision to select him, we arranged a time in the following day to finalize the deal and set up a date for the work to begin. Jerry had said that the entire job would take about a week, and although it did take 5 days to complete, they were not full days, due to the need to let the paint, or the wall repairs required when the wallpaper was removed, to dry. Once we saw what an excellent job his painter did, we asked if he could also paint a couple of small bathrooms. Although he was booked for the following week, his painter came in on Saturday and Sunday to do those two bathrooms for us. He cleaned up his work areas/tools each day, and kept the overall mess to a minimum. All in all, it was a very good experience and we would use him again for future jobs.
Description of Work: We had had some remodeling done and needed to have the master bedroom repainted, and wallpaper removed in the kitchen and repainted, as well as some trim in an addition.

They brought in their workers, introduced them and began the 6 week project. The workers showed up daily, on time and worked very hard. As the work went on, I found I needed more things to be done such as cabinet installation and a shower door install. I can't tell you how pleased I was that they were very flexible. Since I was anxious to get the project done, and they were also interested in keeping their schedule of jobs, they were willing to come in on some weekends. When there were small issues that needed to be addressed, they were happy to take care of them. I got the impression that they were interested in my happiness with the project. This was refreshing since other contractors I attempted to hire sometimes didn't even return my calls. The bottom line? Hire these guys. I plan to do so again, as well as recommend them to my friends.

This is a project I have been trying to do for quite some time, but could never find the time to do it. I am also on the road quite a bit and need someone who can follow instructions and manage project when I am away, which is 80% of the time. As I indicated above, if you know what you want and clearly detail the project task list at the start, they will execute to project and manage the project even if you are away as often as I am. Excellent and would highly recommend.
Description of Work: Full bathroom and kitchen renovation. Have worked with many contractors throughout the US on a variety of renovation projects and these folks would be in my top 5 list nationwide. If you know what you want and detail it clearly for them in itemized project task list, they will execute to instructions and they will manage for you, if you are away often, as I am. Excellent customer service and when a couple of minor items came up in the final phase of the project. Owner not only took my calls, but responded in less than 24 hours.

Nestor was in charge on our site and did a great job managing the project. They were quick and efficient, were very careful of our hardwood floors, carpet and furniture, and around our two young children (who were very curious about the painters). They placed tarps over everything, taped where needed, and were able to cut in most of the edges without any tape at all (I'm still amazed how they can do that). We did run into a bit of a snag trying to match a Behr paint color we had picked with Duron but ended up just picking a standard Duron color after they had trouble coming up with an exact match. We lost one day due to snow and ice but they ended up staying late and then finishing the project in three days. They even moved the furniture in our basement for us in order to complete the job. Jerry checked in on us frequently and Nestor came back a few days after the job was complete to take care of some small touch-ups we had found over the weekend. All and all, we were very happy with the work and would heartily recommend Jerry and his team.
Description of Work: Jerry's crew painted two coats on five rooms (family room, living room, dining room, basement playroom, kitchen/foyer/hallway), including patching/repairing any holes and caulking. We had picked out Behr paint colors for all the rooms, actually supplied the paint (Behr) for two of the rooms and Jerry included Duron paint for the rest. His estimate was that it would take four days to complete the job for two men. We were to prepare each room by removing pictures from the walls, removing any fragile, and moving furniture to the middle of the room.

The painting was done very nicely. I would give them an A for that part. However... Jerry was not the best at returning my calls and e-mails. He eventually got around to it, but wasn't as punctual as I would have liked. On the other hand, he is very nice and friendly. The worst part of the whole experience -- and the reason I am only giving S&J a rating of C -- is that they did some follow-up work for me a month or two later... touch-up painting (after new sliding glass doors were installed) and a bunch of small handyman-type jobs around the condo. For this work, Jerry sent someone who did a very poor job. He asked me to pay him directly... even though I thought I was dealing with S&J. He wanted to charge me $750 for this work, which I thought was absurd. When I said no way, he called Jerry. They he said he would do it all for $500. I still thought that was too high, in part because Jerry had promised me two free hours of touch-up painting. The other small handyman jobs were not worth $500 in my opinion. But at that point I was anxious to get the work finished, so I agreed. Well, the work was done very sloppily and I was very disappointed. I called Jerry, who had the other guy call me back and ask if he could come over and fix what I didn't think was well done. I really didn't want him to come back, but I needed these small repairs and the touch-up painting done properly, so I said okay. He came over shortly thereafter and supposedly fixed everything... but again, the work was not well done at all. All in all, I am disappointed in S&J, but strictly because of this guy he contracted out to me. Again, the quality of the original paint job was fine.
Description of Work: They painted the entire inside of my condo.
