S & J Painting & Remodeling

We contacted S & J Painting in early February for an estimate on having the above rooms painted. Jerry agreed to meet with us on a Saturday morning because of our busy work schedules. Jerry was pleasant, professional and his prices were very competitive. He spent alot of time with us offering suggestions on paint types and brands. We had already purchased some of the paint we wanted to use and Jerry informed us that we could purchase the rest of the paint or we could tell him what we wanted and he would purchase the paint, at his cost, and add it to the bill. I chose to buy the paint myself because I had not finalized my color choices. In hindsight, I wish I had let Jerry purchase the paint because he would have gotten a better deal. Jerry gave us a verbal estimate that morning and followed it up with an e-mail the next day. At our initial meeting, Jerry informed us that the job would be completed by 2 painters in 3 days, with a start date in 2 weeks at our request. The start date was delayed by a day but this was discussed by phone in advance. My husband chose to work from home the first day and Jerry showed up with our painter, John, at the appointed time. With only one painter available that day, Jerry assured us that we would receive the 6 full working days and the estimate would remain the same. Jerry discussed the painting and the minor wall repairs with John, worked with John and my husband to move the heavy furniture, and left. When I came home from work that day, I was amazed by how much work was done already, how professional the job looked and how nice John was. John returned the next 2 days with another painter and then completed the job on the fourth day. Jerry contacted my husband on the final day of painting to arrange a date and time for him to inspect the work and receive payment. The date and time was set and when we contacted Jerry later that day to change the date and time, he did so without hesitation. He returned for payment, but more importantly, he inspected each room with us to make sure we were satisfied with the job. When we first contracted with S & J to do the painting, we were told that the painters usuallly work from 9 am to 5 pm. After the first day, my husband asked John if he and his partner could return the subsequent days by 7:30 am so he could leave for work, and John agreed without hesitation or complaint. My husband and I have been thrilled with the results, have already recommended S & J painting to friends and family and are planning on having S & J return shortly to paint our guest room and home office.

S&J Painting is a great company. I have worked with them before, and they are now my "go to" painters if I know I want a fair quote for a professional, beautiful job. Jerry Dix, the owner, is friendly and professional. He really wants the customer to be satisfied. He quickly responds to you when call and often suggests better ways or add-ons for an even better job, but he's not trying to be a pushy salesman. He just wants you to have a great looking job. The crew who painted my entire 2700 sq ft house several months ago were very polite, did a perfect paint job, even working on tall ladders and overhead, and cleaned up everything at the end. The job I got quoted this time was for partial or full painting of a townhouse rental unit. I called S&J, and Jerry answered his phone right away. I told Jerry my scope of work, he commented, and I trusted and agreed with what he was saying, even though it included doing some extra work that I was being penny-pinching about painting. If I didn't want him to do it though, he wouldn't have bugged me about it. He gave me a ballpark estimate and then confirmed by email. This time we ended up not doing the work as the incoming tenants were not concerned with some scrapes and smudges on the wall. After this tenant moves out, I will call S&J again to get a quote and will strongly consider hiring them.

Great will use S&J Painting and remodeling again

They were beyond fabulous. I had a lot of work done by them. They did a phenomenal amount of work in two days. They cleaned up well after themselves. I took out a closet organizer and replaced the floor in my bedroom with another company, and they came back after the new floors were installed and put the organizer back for me. They picked up all the materials for me, and when we realized a door wasn't going to fit, they even went back to Home Depot and exchanged it out for me. They also fixed all the nail pops in my house and did some drywall repair. One of the best experiences I've ever had working with a contractor! They were kind, on time, and beyond fabulous.

They were superb. They were very customer oriented. They worked with me on everything. They were a phenomenal company.

I will highly recommend Jerry and his painter\dry waller Javier. Jerry showed up on time to deliver a quote. He was very responsive by phone and email. He treated me respectfully and professionally. The job was scheduled and completed when it was promised. The paint I had purchased was not the correct base and the painter went to the store on his own to match the color with the correct base.

The owner’s name is Jerry Dix. I think their price was really very reasonable. We actually did shop around for that. The work was spread out in several visits. They were all done within a month. They came in quick. We were selling our house and we needed things done quickly. We would use them again in the future if needed.

I don't think they need any improvement. They came in and did a good job. They cleaned up when they were on their way out.

Jerry was responsive in emails and on time. The painter (John) that did the work in my hallway and stairwell did a great job. I have old plaster walls that needed repair work done, and it looks great. John also repaired some drywall in the bathroom (about 3'x4') and it looks perfect. Everything was clean and neat as well. I will be hiring them again for some exterior work.

Jerry and his crew did a fantastic job. Jerry was professional and responsive. He's also a really nice guy! The two painters worked fast, did a meticulous job, and went above and beyond what was specified in the contract. We couldn't be happier with the job S&J did for us. In fact, we were so pleased, we've already asked S&J to do some drywall repair and painting in our garage.

The company did not return my phone call.

Good job, done in a reasonable time. Good price, quick phone response. I wish the job was done a little sooner but it seems they were booked by other people at the time and squeezed me in.

UPDATE March 7, 2011: The owner contacted me in response to my negative post apologizing for not getting back to me. He said that he sent an email to the wrong email address stating that he did not feel comfortable with his plumber performing work on my cast iron hot water base board system and will need to pass on the job. He found my phone number after seeing this negative post and sent a follow-up email to me. While I am still not pleased about the entire experience I have to give him credit for calling to apologize. ORIGINAL POST: The gentleman showed right on time on the day we agreed. I provided a printed to-scale plan of the existing floor plan and the proposed floor plan. I had previously e-mailed him the plans too so that he had them in advance of our meeting. We performed the walk through and spent some time talking about the scope of the project. Unfortunately, once he left I never heard back from him or anyone else at the company. They had both my phone number and by email address plus they had my home address. To say I was surprised by no follow-up is an understatement. Given the lack of follow through I did not attempt to contact them again.

Nestor (the GC) and his associates were prompt, did a good job, and were very flexible about taking on additional tasks that came up during the project. What we most appreciated was their willingness to remedy a leak that arose due to the removal of the sink in the bathroom. The leak was not their fault, rather it was an old valve that needed replacing - but Jerry immediately scheduled one of his team to fix the minor damage from the leak. We would definitely use the S&J team again.

We were on a tight schedule, with a 7 day window prior to move in. We were disappointed by S&J and warn you not to use this company. We chose S&J on their promise of a 5 day job, but unfortunately they went overtime and overbudget. We felt tricked. Jerry the owner was apologetic, but he does not directly manage the work being done. Instead he acts more like a salesman, then turns the job over to a team who acts independently. Promises were made, such as extra workers, which was not delivered. In the end it was a rush job with the painters still working as we were moving in. Our first night in our new home was with wet walls and paint fumes. This was the situation we were trying to avoid. We could tolerate surprise changes in price, but the stress caused by S&J's disorganiztion is simply not worth it.

I'm a property manager and have hired Jerry and the pro's at S&J to paint two apartments for me as we got them ready for new tenants. We were looking for painters who could provide a superior paint job (no "spray the house white" painting for us!) on time and within budget. With tenants moving out, both apartments needed to be fully re-painted, sanded, dings fixed, etc., etc. Jerry provided excellent, highly competitive quotes for both projects, responded promptly to all of my questions and requests, and delivered fantastic results. Nestor and his crew finished completely on-time, spent time to make sure both apartments looked perfect, and impressed me in both apartments that they painted. Will absolutely use again and will recommend to others!

Let me say that, Jerry, the company rep. we spoke to was very quick to respond to my intial request for an estimate. He also called 15 minutes before the appt. to confirm and let me know that he would be a little late. Upon arrival he was very friendly. However, he quoted us $1200 dollars to lay plywood over our concrete basment floor and then lay a vinyl peel and stick flooring over that. The square footage on this project is no more than 400. He said the project would take 2 days!! Normal rate is mid 700 hundreds per day and mid 600 hundreds for a two day project and he that would do it for 1200 if it was a two day job. He could not actually quote us an estimate of time since he said he had never worked with this type of flooring. We were surprised he seemed to think it was some sort of puzzle, it is just a peel and stick floor, all one needs is a utility knife. My husband and I were shocked that Jerry would actually think we would pay that price. This was the highest rate we were quoted. The average quote was 575 and all said it would be a 5-6 hour job. Not TWO days! Jerry did advise us to use one of the other companies, but reminded us that S and J did do other projects and to keep them in mind. Not at those prices.

This was a bit of a rush job: I called S&J the week of 12/27/2010 and needed painting the week of January 10. Jerry came out the week prior and gave me an estimate which included all wall repair (of which there was a lot). They did an excellent job repairing walls and patching over holes, and the painters themselves (especially Nestor) were very detail-oriented and precise. When they finished, I was able to go through with Nestor and ask him to do any touch-ups (there weren't many needed). The house looks fabulous and we couldn't be happier.

They did a great job overall! Naham, our main contact person, was wonderful! The crew was courteous and easy to work with throughout the project. They were very accommodating and offered a very reasonable price. They were actually the lowest of all quotes received. We feel comfortable with them in our home.

Jerry showed up for the estimate and after talking with him, I felt really comfortable. When he provided us with the estimate, we decided to use his company after comparing his price to some other contractors. My husband and I have a roofing company and I just felt good about the fact that Jerry owns the company and he was the one giving me the estimate. Our company is also with Angies list and I knew I could trust Jerry's previous reports to be accurate. Jerry's painter showed up on the scheduled day and I immediately felt comfortable with him as well. He worked in my home for over a week and the quality was excellent. He even helped me with color selection for my walls, which was a bonus. I would recommend them highly and in fact I have already given their number to my neighbor

I really like the finished product. The work was very professionally done. I think they could have done a better job controlling the dust from the drywall, it was a bit overwhelming afterwards.

S&J provided a bid for performing the work within 24 hours of my telephone call and scheduled the job for the next week. I was somewhat undecided about what color to use for the trim. The painter completed the trim on one door and permitted me to change my mind on the color - no problem. The completed job is beautiful and we are happy and satisfied customers.

We've used them a number of times. Jerry Dicks and Bob Sloan are the owners. They are polite, efficient, on time and on budget. They did a really nice job. We would absolutely use them again.

I called S&J with no lead time in hopes of finding a painter fast. From the start, Jerry Dix (the "J" of S&J) was extremely responsive, professional, and friendly. He came to make an estimate at exactly the time he said he would. I showed him around the house with the written instructions I had and then let him do his survey and ask questions. He said he'd get me an estimate in about 2 days. His price was right on compared to other estimates plus he said he could probably get started ASAP and get a whole crew by the second day to finish in about 4 days. I picked the paint colors ahead of time and we again reviewed what went where--at least 7 different colors. When his 2 man crew showed up,they were polite, got to work immediately and worked all day. Jerry checked in either in person or by phone frequently. During the following days 5 men worked. I've never had a professional painting job, and these guys impressed me! No wavy lines at the ceiling, precise painting of baseboard and window insets. Fabulous!! They double checked colors and had done an excellent job patching some larger holes in the walls. They also painted our 2 story foyer. Right after Christmas a couple guys came back to but in the banister. They did a fine job. Everything was cleaned up perfectly, no paint spilled anywhere, serious workers and a company that brings excellence to the job. Jerry also works with his dad who does remodeling, so he let me know they could finish our basement, and also he rents a painter for $250 a day. That is a great idea if you just want someone to paint a few doors, etc and have a price upfront. I highly recommend this company!

was getting ready to sell my house, the cat had distroyed the frames of two of the doors, found S & J on angies list and used them. Job was done right and at a reasonable price (I had called around for estamets). He gave me a quotation for painting the inside of my house if I needed to have it done. After talking to several real estate agents I decided to have the house painted, they all said that the quote I had was lower then they had expected I should have to pay. As I was pleased with the door replacement I had S & J paint. The real estate agent I went with made me give her his name because he had done a very good job at a price she thought was excellent.
