MCP Chimney & Masonry Inc

Chimney Repair, Masonry, Fireplaces,

About us

Let me introduce myself and tell you about us. I’m Mike, the founder and owner of MCP Chimney and Masonry. MCP is a company I started in 1994 with only an old pickup, three hundred dollars, and a mission to treat all of my customers like family. Today, each MCP employee is trained to provide the highest quality chimney work. We want to be more than just your average contractor, we want to be the personal chimney and masonry company that you can trust and rely on for a lifetime. As you can imagine, trustworthiness in a chimney company is paramount. Customers cannot easily see chimney work that is recommended. MCP treats our customers the way we like to be treated as customers. I am so grateful that our customers’ trust in us over the years has spurred our growth despite minimal advertising. These word of mouth recommendations of our fiercely loyal customer base has pushed MCP from a single employee with a single truck to twenty-five year-round employees working in fully staffed offices. We hope you will give us a chance to be your trusted chimney company. We will work hard to keep you happy.

My 30 year old home was built with a wood burning fireplace. The chimney has a terrible downdraft and we were rarely successful with burning wood in this fireplace. The smoke would never go up the chimney, always back into the house. Several years ago we converted the fireplace to a gas fireplace enclosure, vented through the chimney. This worked well the first two winters. The third winter was very cold, and I believe the drafting problem was causing the gas not to rise out of the chimney, and thereby setting off our CO2 alarms. We tried several things, but CO2 is just too dangerous to continue use of the gas fireplace. I researched this problem extensively, and decided to turn the fireplace back into a wood burning fireplace. I am prepared to sufficiently warm up the chimney before starting a fire, while cracking a window and turning off the heat in the house to promote the best airflow / draft for the fire. I had the gas fireplace removed, and the gas line capped off removed from the fireplace. I called several chimney companies to come out to give me an estimate on removing the gas liner still inside the chimney, and replacing the cap on top of the chimney with a damper cap. John from MCP came out on Wednesday. It was a rainy day. My appointment was for 2pm in the afternoon, so I went to work in the morning. He called in the morning and asked if he could come by. His morning appointments had been cancelled due to the weather. I told him I was at work and he would need to wait until 2pm. He arrived promptly at 2pm. He quoted me $300 to remove the liner from the chimney, and $825 for a new damper/cap. The firebox was a little wet, and he was concerned that the chimney structure might not be sound, and suggested an inspection with a camera for $89. When I asked why it was so expensive to remove the liner, and what the brand name of the cap was, John became very defensive. I had researched these damper/caps and the most expensive one I found was under $250. His response was that the caps they use are stainless steel. He then went on to berate me about why I wanted to change this back to a wood burning fireplace. If it didn't work before, what made me think it would work now? He then tried to "up sell" me to a wood stove insert for $4000. I told him I was not in the market for that at this time. I appreciated his advice, but was insulted by his attitude. He continued by saying it would be a waste of time to convert this back to a wood burning fireplace. The next company to come out was Canterbury Sweeps. Joe arrived on time, took his shoes off before he came into my house, talked to me to understand my desires for a wood burning fireplace. He removed the liner at no charge. It took him 5 minutes. He told me the damper was still in the chimney, and all I needed was a handle. He had a used one in the truck. No charge. He replaced the chimney cap with a "stainless steel" cap in about 30 minutes. Total charge, less than $200. He then talked to me about how to build a successful fire - get the right wood, to start. He confirmed everything I had read about air flow for a good draft. He was so friendly, knowledgeable, conscientious, polite and a pleasure to work with! My husband and I enjoyed a beautiful wood fire that evening! MCP, you should be ashamed of your unethical business practices.
Description of Work: Looked at my fireplace, and gave me pricing estimates to do work that did not need to be done!

Initially I was not very happy with the company. I had scheduled an afternoon appointment (noon - 4:00) where I would have to take time off work, which I was hesitant to do, so I was told they would call 1/2 hour before they arrived to give me time to come home. The day of the appointment I did see a call from an unknown number; there was no message left so I assumed it wasn't them. When I hadn't heard from them at 3:30, I called the office to let them know I was leaving work (expecting they would be there since it would be 4:00). No answer, just a recording. When I got home I found their card which showed they had come and just left. No followup call or message to let me know they were on their way (why didn't they leave a message on my phone?). I was not happy, and called the office again, but again I got the recording (why was no one there at 3:30? And no message they were gone for the day?). When they called me the next day to "reschedule", there was no apology, no explanation, just "I understand you want to reschedule." I let her know that I was unhappy with how it was handled, and then it was a quick apology. Just not how you should do business. I did end up rescheduling and they did call this time before they came out. Everything went fine.

MCP Chimney & Masonry installed two stainless steel liners in my chimney - one for my fireplace and one for my furnace. They also repaired the chimney crown and parged the smoke chamber. The price was fair and competitive. Brandon Morris and his team assigned to do the work were amazing. He reviewed the scope of the job with me before they started to ensure I didn?t have any questions. Everything proceeded without a hitch. It was necessary to cut a hole in the exterior brick in order to access one of the flues and when finished his masonry crew matched the brick perfectly. You cannot tell where the brick was cut. Everything in the work area was protected so when they finished I didn?t even have any dust to clean up. These guys are one of the best contractors I have ever had do work for me.

They did an excellent job and were as nice as could be. The price wasn't the most expensive or the least expensive of the quotes I received, they were fair. They did an excellent job of matching the 60-year-old bricks of the house, although they apologized in advance in case they couldn't. All of us were quite pleased with the outcome. Robbie, the lead man on the team, was great. My one and only complaint was that tearing down the chimney and setting the brick in mortar created quite a mess down below on my deck. The workmen weren't aware of the deck below from the pictures they had seen in advance. It would have been nice if they had drop cloths to cover the whole deck instead of just underneath the ladder. Pieces of brick and mortar flew all over the place and between the deck boards. They tried to clean it up and dig out the debris from between the boards when finished, but it was still a mess. When I called the office the lovely office manager said that when the next crew came out to acid wash the chimney they would power wash away the debris on the deck. The second crew was very good as well, and did a decent job of cleaning it up. My only suggestion is that in the future the trucks should always carry plenty of drop cloths or a roll of plastic, so that doesn't happen to anyone else. But all's well that ends well, and I am pleased.

We are planning to install vent-free gas logs in our two wood burning fireplaces so we could have heat during power outages and for the warmth and ambiance. I called three of the fireplace installers from Angie's List based on customer reviews for estimates. Two of the fireplace companies suggested that I have both chimneys cleaned and inspected before doing the gas log installation. Even though the gas logs are natural gas and vent-free and would not need the damper to be opened so do not need a working chimney for the gas logs, we had never had the chimneys inspected or cleaned since we moved in 6 years ago. So we thought that was a good idea to get it done once and then we don't have to have it done again unless there is a problem. Steve the Fire Place Guy suggested that I call MCP Chimney & Masonry. He said that he had worked with them before and they are very good. I looked on Angie's List to see the reviews and there were only 4 reviews with an average of B overall rating. I was a little skeptical but Steve told me that they would be up front with me and would not try to sell something I do not need so I scheduled an appointment. Tammy is really very friendly and helpful. She told me that an inspection and cleaning is $159 per chimney. I had seen somewhere else where it costs between $99-$229 but I think the $99 is for either the inspection or cleaning but not for both and the high end prices included other cleaning such as dryer vent. Anyway, I went ahead and scheduled the inspection and cleaning with Tammy. Brandon and Jose arrived within the scheduled time window. They put the tarp down on my beige carpet and began to clean each chimney from the bottom to top method from inside the house. After they were done, there was not a bit of dust or soot from the chimney. Brandon had vacuum all that into his vacuum inside the fireplace before it could get out into the room. My fireplace, mantel, and beige carpet were still clean. Then they went on the roof to do the inspection. Brandon came down with pictures of the crowns that he took with his phone and he also brought down a few pieces of the concrete crown from one of the chimneys. He said that one of the chimney looked like it was the original crown when the house was built 29 years ago and never been replaced or repaired. The concrete was separating from the crown and loosely sitting or dangling from the edge and he was able to bring a few pieces down to show me. The other crown looked like it was repaired previously but not done very well or professionally, Someone that the previous owner has hired used concrete fillers in the cracks of the crown and now has more cracks and some separation. Brandon recommends that I get the repair done especially since our chimneys showed no signs of internal water damage. If there were water damage, it could damage the liner or weaken the integrity of the bricks in the chimney and if left it is not repaired overtime the chimney may need to be replaced which could run about $6,000 or higher. Brandon recommended that we repair both crowns with the poxy compound which has a 20 year warranty. It is put on over the concrete creating a cover. I had seen this done with our neighbor's crown so I had an idea of what he is talking about. He said to use concrete to repair the crown will only have a 2 year warranty so of course I went with the compound. The cost for the repair was $600 for both crowns but Brandon gave me a 15% discount making the repair cost $520 and the total for cleaning, inspecting and repairs to $838. I guess I am happy with that since I have no idea what the average costs would be. So I scheduled the repair with Tammy for the following week. They came out and did the job and as far as I know everything seems fine (it is not like I am going to climb on a ladder on the roof to check). So far so good and I am happy with the staff and work. Usually, since I am the one in the household that calls for repairs or maintenance I would be the one companies would be talking with. Some male representatives have a tendency to think since I am a female I may not understand or need to know how or what the job entails so they do not bother to fully explain things to me or ask to speak with my husband. Good luck with that, my husband do not want to be bother and he would say talk with my wife. So if you do not want to talk with me...Good bye, you are not getting the job. Brandon was completely opposite and took the time to explain all the aspect of the job and why. He was absolutely wonderful and so was Tammy in the office. I would definitely call them again and since they do masonry work, I may have projects for them in the future. So as long as this repair job continues to be problem free, I would definitely recommend them and I would ask for Brandon Morris.
Description of Work: MCP Chimney & Masonry came to clean and inspect both wood burning fireplaces. They discovered that the concrete crowns around the chimneys needed repair to avoid any water damage. Everything in the chimneys were fine and showed no signs of water damage inside but that we should repair the crowns anyway. Brandon & Jose went up the chimneys and one of the chimney looked like it was the original concrete crown when the house was built, the other chimney where the previous owner had used the most look like someone had tried to repair it but did not do a good job, it had concrete fillers where the cracks were in the crown and now there are gaps in the crown where the concrete had expanded and a couple of pieces of the concrete crown have pulled away from the chimney and was left separated and almost loosely sitting on the edge. So Brandon and Jose needed to come back the following week to do the repairs on both chimneys.

I believe it took a couple of days to complete. We had a mixed experience. The chimney work was mostly fine, but we had leaking through the ceiling after they did the work. They came to look at it and they said it was not due to their work, but we had other contractors look at the chimney and they said it was because of the chimney rebuild.
