It was done perfectly. The quote included drywall in the back overall where the HVAC run. I didn't have to pay a contractor to do that. They fitted into that house so expertly. I didn't know it could be done. I was without HVAC for 2 years because I didn't know it could be done. There never was a unit. There was a heating unit from the '80s so they redid all the runs because none of the runs functioned. They did the drywalls over. There were no vents in the house. They redid the entire system. They run the runs in the ceiling, bulked them in properly, found space in closets to efficiently hide them and not pick up space in the room. They figured out how to retrofit it into the basement appropriately. I had a finished basement so they calculated out proper square footage and where to put the returns so that it circulates the air appropriately. They just did a great job. My realtor recommended them. They are just fantastic! They actually do care about making it look good and not just shoving it in. They want my house to look good and they want it to work properly. I was in Switzerland for 2 weeks and they did that work while I was gone and my friend would check in. They were trustworthy and always on time. I didn't need to be present. They did the job and I wasn't even there. There was no question that they performed that job appropriately and quickly.
Description of Work: John G. Webster Co. in Washington D.C. installed the HVAC system in a 1910 row home and retrofitted it so beautifully that it didn't stick out at all.

I found them to be outstanding. I tend to ask a lot of questions (being an engineer) and frequently with other contractors I get less than satisfactory depth in the answers. I found the John G Webster personnel to be very knowledgeable and professional. My questions were answered with sufficient depth and detail that I was very comfortable with the work they performed. I have not had any issues in the year and a half since the install. Their work has held solid. The gas dryer hookup required running a new gas pipe through a portion of my basement and then up to the first floor behind the dryer. They had to work around a small room with a massive amount of CAT-5 cabling right in the area where they had to turn vertical and drill up to the first floor, and they didn't damage even one cable. It was not an easy place to work.
Description of Work: They were a subcontractor for the natural gas portion of a generator install. In addition I contracted with them directly to install a gas dryer hookup while they were on site for the generator install. The $800 cost listed above is for the dryer hookup. The major portion of their work was s subcontract from the generator installer. I don't have that broken out cost available. I do feel that I received a good value for the work performed.

I must say that I truly enjoyed working with the all the staff and the management at the John G. Webster company. This is a decent sized operation, but with a small company feel. I took the job with the Webster company, because I was looking for a service minded company, not a sales first company like so many out there. The technicians at Webster are professionals, and all are required to obtain their professional licenses. I would highly recommend their services, as the prices are very competitive, and I feel the work supersedes that. They are most interested in delivering a quality product and keeping a customer for life.
Description of Work: This is not a company that I used, but a company that I used to worked for for 5 years. This is a professional HVAC & plumbing outfit that also is one of a few companies that regularly installs and services boilers, and other specialized heating and air conditioning systems.

Two years ago we chose Michael Bonsby to install a larger system to service our main bedroom and the first floor of our home. Now we installed another outdoor unit at the other end of the house to service the last two bedrooms, effectively providing super-quiet and efficient (SEER=18) air conditioning to the entire home. We obtained three bids, varying from the winning $7,595 to $8,958 for a technically-identical system. The winning contractor (Webster) did a good job, with weaknesses only in minor areas. (They failed to tell us the day they would arrive, although it was several days after I said we would be ready, and their cleanup was not as complete as Bonsby's was two years ago) Webster completed the installation in two days, just as Bonsby did, and Webster's task was more complex than that Bonsby had to do at the other end of the house two years ago. The final installation looks great. The outdoor unit is located near a path subject to flooding. Webster's installer's assured me it would be OK. Well, we just had two days of heavy rains and the outdoor unit is in fact still soundly installed.
Description of Work: Installed an 18,000 BTU/h Mitsubishi ductless mini split heat pump A/C system (MXZ-2B20NA outdoor unit) to serve our last two bedrooms (each with a wall-mounted MSZ-GE09NA indoor unit).

The workers were very professional, they knew the requirements of the more complicated high efficiency system. They made sure the plumbing was installed out of the way. The few changes that I requested were done quickly they also made several helpful suggestions. They were polite and made sure that the work area was cleaned up after each days work (4 days).

Sales rep came out promptly to look over the house and prepare the estimate. He was friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. Explained how the system works and company's experience with the manufacturer. Company obtained necessary permit from Arlington County, made necessary changes to the electrical panel and installed the equipment, all on schedule. The system functions beautifully and passed inspection without any problems. The workmen were prompt and efficient and cleaned up after themselves, including removing and hauling away a cumbersome window unit. I plan to use them for any future maintenance and repair and will certainly get their estimate for any future plumbing work.

We received a detailed in-home consultation and evaluation of our existing installation. This evaluation came to the same conclusions as competing bids but was more detailed and thorough. The price was higher than one other bid and lower than one other bid. Ralph Smith took time to find an optimal solution, one that wouldn't be too big nor too small for our house and considering we already had a low energy bill. He was careful to suggest appliances that would maximize the energy tax deduction we could claim. The written/emailed offer indicated clearly what work will be performed and what (brand/power) appliances will be installed. We put off the work to benefit from the subsequent year's tax rebate. Despite the fact that the offer had long expired, John G. Plumbing still honored it and moved forward swiftly once we signed the contract. The company got all necessary permits and sent us a copy before the work was performed. We agreed on a date to perform the work. The technicians arrived on time and worked very diligently and quietly. They cleaned up very well. A month later, we called because we felt the furnace had become somewhat louder than it was initially. A technician was sent to check it out the next day. He confirmed that a screw wasn't fully tightened, allowing the vent to vibrate slightly. That was fixed on the spot and we haven't had a problem since. Very pleased all around!
Description of Work: Replace furnace, AC unit, water heater. Duct work to add an air intake in the basement. Move AC unit from its back yard location to the roof top (adding insulated copper line to new AC unit along outside wall).

Granted that my AC is old and on its last leg, I fear; but while their repair man totally warned me that additional freon might not be that effective or might not work, I decided it would be better to try to patch it rather than pay thousands of dollars for a new unit at least this year. My gripe was the cost.....$95 for the service call, $85 for what they called and quot;requiredand quot; dye to test for a leak, and finally $295 for the freon. Very, very expensive.

They were really good. They were $300 cheaper than anybody else for the water heater. They were a lot cheaper. They were very knowledgeable. The guys talked to me about what's going on and he didn't try to oversell me. He told what I need & what not. He told me what I could find and about the warranty. He also said that I could go to the home improvement store to install it, but they may not have the parts required. He was really good.

Description of Work: I only called John G. Webster to get an unbiased opinion on a project I was considering. I was deciding between having a conventional or high velocity AC system installed and I wanted speak with someone other than the individuals who provided me proposal about the benefits and disadvantages of each. Ralph took about five minutes to speak with me. He didn't try to sell me anything, just gave me his thoughts about each system. Would definitely consider calling them for service whenever the need arises.

My online request for an appointment was not answered??..( This should have been my clue)?so I called the main number 3 days later. I was given an appointment for early February with Tim Anderson. My estimate showed up a week after the appointment via email for $9600 which included a "pre season discount. I asked if there we a less expensive option, and I was told they had to come back out to my home, which they did on March 5th 2013 and 30min late to the appointment. On March 20th I called the office to find out why I had not yet heard anything. Tim Anderson returned my call saying he put my estimate to the side of his desk and forgot about it. Today, March 21st, I received an email from Tim Anderson stating they would not have a better option for me. This was a total waist of 6 weeks. Clearly they have more business than they need.

From start to finish, John G. Webster was extremely professional in installing a central cooling and heating system for our home. Ralph Smith came out and took the time to educate us on the entire process, including the intricacies of working on such an old house. After we hired them, he obtained the necessary building and mechanical permits before proceeding on the project. The work was done on time and the people at John G. Webster were very responsive to our needs, which gave us great confidence in the final product. Would definitely recommend them to others.

The uniformed employee arrived on time, was polite and professional, and offered to put on booties to keep my floors clean. He performed my maintenance, could not find the outdoor part of my unit (my fault - I am in a condo), but then after he wrote me up, HE found the unit and came back to finish the job even though he could have left and I would have been satisfied. Above and beyond the call of duty! He offered recommendations for immediate and long term service needs, and the price was very reasonable for the work performed.

Additionally, we now have a service contract with him, which the previous HVAC provider never offered. It's really important to know that our A/C will run in our hot DC summers!
Description of Work: My husband and I met with Ralph Smith, the owner of John G. Webster company, last spring to discuss our A/C needs. The previous summer we had multiple emergency visits with another HVAC provider who we found out was only doing temporary fixes. We found out that adding freon is just a quick patch. That meant we had a leak but were never told this. Ralph Smith was able to educate us on how our two systems (upstairs and downstairs) work, what the freon patches meant, and gave us several options. When we decided to replace our two systems (our house was 11 years old, the original units were builder grade, and the DC summers require us to run our A/C almost nonstop) Ralph again gave us several options and explained the pros & cons of all choices. He explained the different prices of the different options, what the energy ratings meant-how much we would save on our electric bill, etc. We have never had such a thorough explanation ever, and we've been homeowners for 25 years. Also Ralph requires that all of his employees have certifications that many other companies don't require of their employees. We highly recommend without reservation Ralph Smith and his company: John G. Webster!

I left a message with their receptionist on a Sunday and he called me back within 30 minutes. He told me that the box on the radiator was not causing a fire hazard and I could wait and save a little bit of money by taking care of it in the spring. Our air conditioner broke down and we called out John G. Webster to assess the damage. Recommendation was to replace AC motor and clean the blower wheel. We agreed and were told they would order new motor and call us when it was available to schedule the work. They never called us back. We called to check status and told us they had tried calling our house the previous night and we didn't pick up (we were home the entire evening and phone did not ring once). We scheduled the work for the next Monday. Later, I call to reschedule and they tell me that we weren't even in the system for an appointment. I reschedule for Wednesday morning, and they never show up. We call to complain and ask for some kind of discount considering our problems. We are told that they will call us back as to whether they can do anything for us. They never call back. Finally we just canceled the entire service. They didn't seem to care at all that they had lost our faith and our business. ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Stay far, far away from the John G. Webster company. We contracted with them in 2007 to install a $11,500 Sanyo ductless multi-split HVAC system in our home. They did a horrible job with the installation which left us with problems we are still trying to deal with years later. They had to come out multiple times after the installation to fix system leaks, missing filters, the system's inability to cool or heat effectively, etc. We are now in only the 5th year and the system has gotten so bad we can only keep one of the four indoor units on at a time. If you turn on any more than that, they either turn themselves off, or they push out unconditioned air. We have had other companies out to fix our system over the last few years, spending thousands of dollars on service calls, and all anyone ever says is it looks like we have major installation problems and they are unable to help us. Nobody can pinpoint the problem. To add insult to injury, I recently contacted Ralph Smith, President of the John G. Webster company, since they did the installation and I figured they might have become smarter with these types of systems since 2007,and could possibly help us finally fix it once and for all, and you know what Ralph told me? He said, and I quote - "We are not willing to serve you now, or at any time in the future, at any price." Please stay away from this company unless you like to be "had"!

As mentioned, Because of the temperature, I contacted John G Webster, from whom I had had a good response in the past. Also, because I had dealt with Webster in the past, I did not expect that they would provide the cheapest alternative. However, because of the circumstances, I opted for what I thought would be the most professional, not necessarily the cheapest. The technician arrived a bit late - after working hours - on a friday, and his initial assessment was that it was the thermostat. However, when he discovered that it was a tenant occupied property, suddenly his estimate for a thermostat was a whopping $500 because "that was the cheapest thermostat he had on his truck". He also suddenly indicated that, in order for the furnace to work, I would also need a burner for another approximately $300. Because I had no options, I ended up paying over $900 for a $65 thermostat and roughly $250 burner. When I called the office manager to confirm their price and our communications (the technician did not speak English well, and I was concerned that perhaps there was a miscommunication), the manager on duty refused to speak to me.....I could take it or leave it! I subsequently contacted the HQ office. I appreciate a fair price for a good service, but, by any measure, this was simple gouging. No response.
Description of Work: A relatively new furnace in a small rental property suddenly would not come on. I had installed the thermostat myself several years earlier, and suspected that to be the cause. However, because I was out of town, it was a Friday night, and we were experiencing the coldest day of the season, I needed an immediate response for my tenants, who also had small children. As suspected, the first diagnosis of the technician, once he arrived, was that it was the thermostat.
