We used D&A Dunlevy for a few years for spring and fall yard cleanup work, plus general yard maintenance (no lawn care, however). The quality of the work was usually top notch. No complaints there. Calls were returned quickly. The yard work was done well and they didn't leave a mess behind. The cost of the work, however, spiraled out of control. What started out as $3500/year rose to $5500/year over 18 months. The level of service they provided made sense for a commercial property that needs to look top notch all the time. But in my case, I didn't need my mulch swapped out 2-3 times per year. And I didn't need my bushes trimmed 3 times between March and September. I requested that they back off on the level of service, but the crews kept showing up. The final straw was one day when I watched one worker walk back and forth across my back yard with a leaf blower. There were no leaves in my back yard. Yet he proceeded to spend 30 minutes going back and forth in my yard, blowing nothing. And there was another worker removing perfectly good mulch from my yard to replace it with new mulch. A third worker was trimming my bushes for the third time in 5 months. This was way overkill for what I needed in a residential back yard. Did the yard look great? Yes. Was I paying way too much compared to the level of work really needed for a residential property? Yes.

It went great. Cost was a bit high at first -- however they were very accommodating and provided useful suggestions to get biggest bang for our buck without our budget. Since we installed in late summer, they assured us that anything that didn't come back next spring, they would replace.

We got an estimate over the phone to have leaves picked up on our property. The estimate was for $1,700 -- which I thought was high -- but we went ahead anyway because we wanted the work done soon, which they said they could do. An invoice for $3,000 arrived soon thereafter. They arrived at 8:30 a.m. and left by 3:30 p.m, so it wasn't as they had to work overtime. We called to see if they would negotiate the cost, which they wouldn't. I would not use this company again. The service was OK, the cost was not.
Description of Work: This company was called to pick up leaves at our 2 acre property. We needed this done quickly, and they responded quickly. But ...

Could not have been better, as they surpassed even our high expectations. D and A Dunlevy has been a family business since 1982, and has the expertise to address the many facets of landscaping. Dave Dunlevy is an ISA Certified Arborist; his son Blake has a degree in Landscape Design. Their office staff (including family members) are responsive and professional, and many on their crew have been with them for years. Ours was a difficult site requiring specialized equipment to access the rear yard and the plans called for a high degree of ingenuity. (HVAC equipment needed to be temporarily relocated, for example, and they arranged to have it done quickly and efficiently.) The Dunlevy family conducted business in a timely and professional manner, and even pulled the required permits quickly -- a feat in DC! Their entire crew worked hard throughout the hottest days, and either Dave or his son, Blake, was on-site daily to oversee the operation. They not only returned phone calls immediately, but came out quickly when called. They did an admirable job on the construction -- their engineering and stone work were excellent -- and came up quickly with ingenious solutions for the few inevitable on-site problems. The bottom line: The Dunlevys set the bar high, take pride in what they do, and operate with a level of integrity that is, sadly, increasingly uncommon today.
Description of Work: This was a fairly large residential landscaping job, which included: Demolition of and filling in a large swimming pool; construction of multiple retaining walls faced with stone; construction of a large multilevel flagstone patio; demolition of an existing driveway and replacing it with pavers. Also excavation of the house's foundation and waterproofing; construction of a long dry stack stone wall; provision of proper drainage throughout the entire property; and replacement of the front walk, stone steps and landings. The landscape plans called for bed preparation; transplantation and installation of new plant material (large trees; new shrubs, perennials, annuals); and mulch application, as well as oversight of lighting, irrigation, and fencing contractors. Their bid was in the middle, but since D & A Dunlevy came so highly recommended from our landscape architect (whom we have used in the past) we went with them and we are delighted with the result.
