Home & Hearth Remodeling & Restoration LLC
About us
Home & Hearth Remodeling and Restoration is a licensed, insured and registered Home Improvement Contractor in the Springfield/Hartford area. Our 6-person team of conscientious craftsmen handles most of the work directly and, when called for, we have other highly-competent colleagues available for staffing projects that require other specialized licenses, training or skills (e.g., HVAC, electrical, fine woodworking, etc.) We believe that vertical integration on a project -- which is a fancy way of saying that we put the trim and paint on the walls we finish and build ourselves -- results in better finished work without finger-pointing between subcontractors. We have worked hard to successfully cultivate a reputation for being honest, hard-working service people who care about what we do. We are motivated by making living environments better, be that by making rooms bigger, tighter, newer or simply nicer. We love the variety in our work as general remodelers. One week it's a deck, another a garage or family room addition, or a kitchen or simply replacing windows. Once we work for you, we will be your "go-to" guys for anything having to do with your home or property -- even when we can't provide the service required, we'll still introduce you to someone you can rely on. We accept all major credit cards as well!

The work done is very nice. The problem I have is with the estimates and actual cost. When we received the estimates the plumbing portion of the estimates were high so Dave found another plumber and the numbers were better. We decided to go forward with the work. Everything was going good for the first bathroom. Dave told us we were on schedule with the estimate, when we got the final invoice for the bathroom he was quite a bit over the original estimate even after discounts the amount was still quite a bit over the original estimate. When they started the second bathroom I asked Dave about being over the estimate and he said it would be closer to the estimate because he knew what he was getting into, then when we got the final invoice for the second bathroom he was still over before the discounts, after the discounts he was still quite a bit over the original estimate. I understand the house is very old and can understand going over on one bathroom, but the second one I think should have been closer. We were not told that it was running over until we received the final invoices. The people he has working for him are professional and do a good job.
"This house is a very old one and posed repeated challenges. It required more work to correct bad framing and conditions that made finishing the room practical. Walls, floors and ceilings all required re-framing in order to get them flat, straight and square so that cabinetry and fixtures would fit well and correctly. We also encountered issues with the existing plumbing and wiring that needed to be addressed to be made code-compliant. We are sorry for the rude surprise in the additional cost."
I am answering on behalf of the Board of Managers at Ashely Hills Condos so am not the homeowner who had windows replaced. However, I was informed that the job was done quickly, professionally and they cleaned up everything.
The overall project went very well. Two to three days to remove decking, chip out and cut metal lally columns from exiting concrete patio beneath existing deck. About 4-5 days to install new deck, railings and stairs. Finishing touches outstanding. Workmen very professional and courteous. We had 3 contractor quotes and H & H Remod was the middle quote. We chose H & H because we had them remodel a bathroom in the lower level of our raised ranch in the past and were very pleased with the results of that project. So even though they were not the low bidder on the project we chose them because we were familiar with their craftsmanship first hand.
"Thanks, [member name removed]. It's always a pleasure and we will be checking to make sure you put that new deck to good use!"
"Thank you for the kind words, [member name removed]. We always try hard to do work that is in the best interest of the client and view each engagement as the beginning of a long-term relationship in which we become your personal experts for all repair, remodeling and property management."
The craftsman kept the space organized, cleaned up every day, and vacuumed thoroughly when closing up for the weekend. They applied plastic covering over the carpeting that stayed in place for the entire job. At the end of the project, the bathroom was left clean. All the spare tiles were tucked away in a corner, neatly organized. Like all other aspects of their work, the attention to detail in cleaning was impressive.
The job took longer than it was estimated to, but we knew going into the project that there might be some surprises once the old unit was ripped out. The major cause for extra time was the amount of effort it took to get the walls "plumb" and all the cuts to get the subway tiles and cut-out niche lined up. The potential for "overruns" was built into the estimate; so the additional costs were not a big surprise.
"Thank you, [member name removed]. We enjoyed the challenge of the project working in the awkward space to bring you a beautiful new shower and appreciated your willingness to let us make you our first install of a new tiling preparation method we've now made our standard."
"We always adopt the property owner's perspective and provide our best advice to help them make the right choice for their given situation. In this case, these Pella windows were still largely fine, but the botched installation caused problems we new we could correct for vastly less money than fully replacing all the windows. Given that the property is rented and owner-occupied, it seemed silly to throw thousands of additional dollars at the problem when we knew we could keep the costs much lower for the owner while still guaranteeing that the windows would perform as they should."
"It was our pleasure to beautify and repair your bathroom and we look forward to work together again in the future!"
"We love you, [member name removed]! We're very happy to have been able to beautify your kitchen and perform the other repairs around the house. We hope the extra insulation in the attic has also helped with the ice dams!"
"Thank you, [member name removed]. We hope the bathroom is serving you well and are ready when you need us to address that front porch and kitchen."

The overall installation despite the additional cost went extremely well. I cannot complain about the extra "hidden" cost that involved the drain in the concrete floor. Anyone who undertakes a home improvement knows there are some unknown costs involved that are not anticipated at construction inception. I feel Dave detailed the anomaly very well and provided a reasonable final cost to fix the problem.
Over the 12 days of construction Dave's "crew" was very polite and punctual. The professionalism displayed was complimentary to my overall experience with Home and Hearth.
Bottom line is I would gladly recommend Home & Hearth and will use them again in the spring (2013) for a deck overhaul I am planning.
Good work, very professional and reasonable cost.
"It is always gratifying for us to see the product of our work when an underutilized, decrepit or simply ugly space is remade into something appealing and functional as with the basement bathroom."
"This is still one of our favorite kitchens with that big, open layout and lovely matching wainscoting to match the cabinets with their stylish accent lights. You area very highly-valued client we love to work for."
