S & W Tile

S and W Tile has been the best experience we've had with a contractor. When we needed someone to help us redo our second floor bathroom, we knew exactly the waterproofing system we wanted and needed a contractor who was willing to work with us, 'DIYers'. Wes came out looked at the job, knew exactly what we wanted, has taken classes in the Kerdi system, and was OK with us demo'ing and doing some of the rebuild. Not only that, he was supportive and he gave us advice on how to proceed and be ready for his install day! He and his partner had great communication with us, answering phone calls and emails promptly - that's priceless in a contractor! Their work is flawless and they gave it 100%. They are prompt, curteous and fair. Would highly recommend.

Wes was prompt and professional, and the tile looks beautiful. He is thorough and gives attention to detail. I am very happy with the results.

Wes O'Conner came out from Waltham to our home - probably about an hours drive each way - to give me an estimate on tiling a bath surround and bathroom floor. He charged for this service which I thought was fair - his time has value. (The fee for the estimate was very fair and Wes spent well over an hour + + + with me). He arrived on time. Was very helpful in going over the tiling prep and process and showed me photos of some of his work (of which he is justly proud.) He had suggested that I get some samples of tiles that I was interested in so his estimate could be more accurate. I did that and he discussed the pros and cons of each and he made good suggestions. Besides the upstairs bath he also gave me an estimate for the kitchen, entry way and 1st floor bath. We have decided to go a different route with the upstairs bath. But if we had decided to tile we would have had Wes do it and if we tile the downstairs area we will call on him. Wes also referred us to a plumber Jeff Ryan (also on Angie's list) with whom we were also very impressed. (Review to follow soon.)

Wes (S & W Tile) exceeded our expectations. He responded to our first inquiry within a few hours, answered all of our initial questions and came over for an estimate. Each time Wes arrived at our house he gave us an exact time of arrival and was either early or right on time. (On the way to our estimate he was driving from Worcester and got stuck in traffic. He called to let us know exactly when his GPS estimated his arrival - so thoughtful!) Wes also helped us select the type of tile we would use for the back splash - based on durability, look/neatness, and also price. He also saved us money on several occasions. First, he was able to install the new tile on top of an existing back splash so that we would not have to pay hundreds of dollars for demolition and patching. He also sent me to Lowe's upon his arrival to buy a cheaper and smaller bag of grout than the tile shop had recommended. Most importantly, Wes did a beautiful job laying the tile! He is a skilled craftsman with a good eye and a great work ethic. He took great care in his work to leave us with the best final product. Wes payed great attention to detail in cutting our trim tiles, laying a beautiful pattern, and fixing a few of our electrical outlets so that the new switch plates would lay nicely. He also cleaned up very well. If we ever have another tiling job we will surely call Wes and would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone!

We needed someone to rescue us from a tiling job that didn't go well. The previous tiler was inexperienced at tiling, and Wes came in and saved the day. He assessed the situation quickly, and he went with me to Home Depot for an hour and a half to pick out new tile to get the bathroom done right. Wes is very knowledgeable about the different types of tile, and really knows his stuff. He is also a very hard worker; he originally thought he would get the job done in three days, but was able to get it done in just two, and we are extremely pleased with the result! His craftsmanship is impeccable, and we are confident that the tile will last for years. Also, his original estimate was $3200, but actually took off $200; the first time I've had that happen. We'll definitely use him again in the future!

Wes is the consummate professional: friendly, focused, professional, punctual, and holds himself to high standards. He consulted with and briefed me at every stage of the project so that there were no surprises. He listened to my needs, kept my budget in mind, and presented me with different options for addressing repairs to the tile. I recommend him enthusiastically.

Wes is very thoughtful and detail oriented. He explained everything fully, included me in any changes or problems he encountered and gave great advice. He is meticulous, punctual and I would recommend him to anyone.

Wes was excellent to work with. He was available via email and phone to help us select right materials for the job. On the weekend of the work, he and his team showed up on time and were very professional. Unfortunately, I purchased some inconsistent material from Lowes. Wes handled the need for new supplies and the issues that came up with my house with grace and contacted me immediately when any part of our plan needed to be changed. He also consistently went above and beyond to help us move the project along quickly as we were staying with the in-laws while most of the work was being done! During the course of the work we decided that the tile on the shower walls needed to be replaced as well. Wes provided a quote of $3,600 for this (not including supplies) and stayed strictly within his quote. The final product is of exceptional quality and we are very happy with the service we received. Wes and his team (including plumber Jeff Ryan and Melendy Carpentry) were great to work with and stayed very strictly with in the prices he quoted us as well as time frame. We highly recommend W&S Tile for any tile work.

Wes arrived exactly on time at 8AM, and began surveying the area that needed the backsplash installed as well as the materials that I purchased for the job. I bought the marble tiles 5/8" (on sheets) along with the colored grout for the job. Wes spent a lot of time talking about the specifics of the job with me and my wife. He has a great eye for detail and noticed all of the little areas that may create some challenges. The first challenge that he encountered was with the molding around the window mantle. It protruded in such a way that he had to notch it out behind it in order to be able to install the tiles as they were too thick to fit behind the window sill. He presented us with all the options and we chose the one we were most comfortable with. He hit a similar snag on one of the double outlets in the kitchen which was not mounted correctly in the wall. It was fairly difficult to get the out to sit flush against the outlet cover (which happened to be nestled up against the window molding). He must have spent 30 - 45 minutes getting that one outlet in the kitchen to look professional. It is that type of attention to detail that I appreciate so much as a homeowner. Once he overcame those two challenges, the rest of the install went fairly smoothly. He was done with the entire job and on his way home by 2:30 or 3. Overall, he is one of the most professional contractors that I have ever hired. In addition to demonstrating exceptional quality; he also kept to the original estimate that he provided me with. The job did not cost any additional as I was able to adequately describe the work before he ever arrived. Finally, he is very responsive to my phone calls and emails. It is great working with someone who promptly responds to your inquiries. Finally, my wife and I are making plans to have him replace all the ceramic tile in our downstairs later this summer. The fact that we plan to have him come back to perform such a major undertaking (310 square feet of tile) should be a testament to his abilities and customer service.

Wes did a great job from start to finish. With these sorts of restoration jobs he is very cautious to say that he cannot guarantee the results, and that the job may run long if for example the tiles cannot be removed cleanly and nearby tiles to the ones being repaired must also be replaced. It is also difficult to match color of both tile and grout on something this old. Luckily we had plenty of replacement tiles salvaged from the renovation of another room in the house. There was also some concern in attempting to patch holes in the floor (from old steam pipes), since there was no subfloor below. In the end Wes came up with a creative solution that seems to have worked well. Wes came out as part of a two-man crew and worked very efficiently, and the job ended up at the low end of what he estimated. The results look great.

Wes was great to work with. He was great right from the start from the first contact on the phone. He asked a lot of questions, gave me great suggestions on dealing with the tile store, and followed up with texts and emails when necessary. The day of the job he arrived promptly and got to work. He told us right away that the overly-expensive grout we bought from the tile store would not be enough, so on his suggestion, we went to a big box store and bought a much more economical equivalent product, saving us money as well (I was able to get a refund on the expensive grout). The tile store 'designer' did not do a very good job in the design, but Wes worked with us and the resulting design is a vast improvement. The job went very well and we are very pleased with everything Wes did. He is very knowledgable and great to work with. I especially like that he uses texting and email, as well as the phone, to communicate. We would hire him for any future job!

S & W Tile was great. They responded quickly to my initial query, came quickly to give an estimate, started the job on time, and finished on time. Price was exactly consistent with estimate. Even though the job was difficult because of the poor condition of the area before the work began, S & W worked though all the issues with creativity and grace (and kept my budget in mind too). There is no doubt in my mind that S & W really cared about my satisfaction and doing a top quality job. Overall they were wonderful to work with.

Went great. Wes was a pleasure to work with, gave us an estimate promptly and managed to schedule the work quickly. They dealt with some unexpected termite damage in the walls, and also with my artisanal (i.e. irregular) tile, which required a lot of creativity and skill in terms of laying it out by hand/getting special tile spacers, etc. The end result is beautiful.

Wes and Silvester did a great job. Wes, in particular, was a joy to work with. He was both nice and extremely helpful. There's no doubt we would seek his help again if needed.

Wes is very trustworthy, professional and knowledgeable. He is very respectful and polite. He is an artist. I will hire him again and tell everyone I know to hire him for their tile jobs.

The job involved putting tile around the fireplace The tiles were large (13X40) and had pattern so cutting and proper alignment would have been a challenge. I emailed Wes the detail of the job with picture and I got the quote (range) . They showed us on time and finished the job exactly as we wanted in half a day.

Wes was great from start to finish. He called us within a few hours of our initial online request and came out the next morning for an estimate. He provided an estimate on the spot with a range depending on the difficulty of the job. He was open and honest about the potential issues that could increase the cost. We were debating between two different styles of tile for our bathroom walls, and he advised on the pluses and minuses of both options. For the job itself, Wes and Sylvester were punctual and hard-working. They came early and worked well into the evening, but only after confirming they would not get in the way. They finished the job in about half their estimated time and at the low end of their estimated cost. Most importantly, the work was impeccable.

I contacted S&W tile after seeing them listed on Angie's List. I think it was by email. Wes O'Connor got right back to me and we agreed to meet on a Friday. He was punctual and very professional. Assessing the situation he gave me a few options. None of them was ideal since the shower had been installed incorrectly, but he came up with a solution that didn't require taking out a second mortgage. He was honest in his evaluation of the problem, and has a real enthusiasm for his job, which is quite refreshing. He explained that he does this sort of repair job all the time, and he showed me pictures of a similar repair that he just finished. Wes told me that he could start the job on Tuesday, and gave me instructions on buying replacement tiles and where to find good tile at a reasonable price. I sent him pictures of the tile I liked, just to make sure it was going to work. He is very thorough in his explanation of what he is going to do. It may be TMI for some, but I appreciated him taking the time to go over everything. We were due to have a big snowstorm on Tuesday, so he contacted me and asked if we could move the work til Thursday which was fine with me. He came right on time. He is very methodical and you need to have everything there for him to start the job. Timing is everything with this sort of job because of the materials used, and he finished everything in 8 hours working alone. The job looked fantastic when he was done. He was meticulously clean. During the whole job he was sensitive to what was going on in the house. He wasn't disruptive at all. I have several dogs and they can be noisy, but he took them in stride. All in all it was a great experience, and I would highly recommend him for any tile job.

I had contacted Wes sometime in January for the first time regarding the tile area around the tub that was leaking through and causing damage to our dining room ceiling. He was honest and straightforward saying that it would continue unless it was completely redone. I disliked the bathroom immensely and proceeded to have the entire bathroom gutted down to the studs. Good thing I did since there was a hole in the subfloor about one foot by one foot and it was rotting out and wet around the edges. Well, do to family pressures I had to hire a contractor who did work for my husband's side of the family. What a mistake, beyond words. Would I be embarrassed to show you how he left the tile around the edge of the tub? Yes, I would. All the trouble of coordinating the electric and the plumbing and not only that I was such a pushover that I was the one that had to pick up the tile and carry it upstairs. So, I called Wes again to save me. He told me what needed to be done to fix it and honestly said that I am already too far into the project now and the fix would not be perfect but really what else could be done. The contractor did not use a vapor barrier and did some hack work that I even noticed. Wes noticed right away that there was too much deflection to support the floor tiles and they squeak. All this could have been avoided. I totally regret not having hired Wes and wish I could start all over again but I am already in the hole 10k. Money wise it would have been better to hire Wes as well since the project is still very incomplete. He is honest, enthusiastic and is educated regarding new materials and knows what works and does not. He is not the contractor that Angie's list protects you from. Why I did not go with my gut feeling is because I was pressured which is ridiculous since every person I have hired from Angie's list has done a great job and I am a faithful subscriber. So please, save yourself my headache and stick with contractors like Wes. It will save you tons of heartache.

I contacted Wes to get a professional opinion and estimate for a couple of minor tile issues. He returned my call the same day that I emailed him, and we scheduled an appoointment for a few days later. He arrived right on schedule, evaluated our problems, and suggested that we could easily fix them ourselves. He gave us detailed advice on what to do and what products to use, and I plan to try and tackle both projects over the next few weeks. He was extremely knowledgable and and honest, and if I'm not able to fix either problem on my own, I'll definitely be calling him to come and do the work!

We had a terrific experience with Wes. I called on Friday and he came to give an estimate on Saturday morning. We needed to re-file our small bathroom floor after a disastrous experience 3 years ago. At that time, we picked a white tile and white grout - huge mistake. The handyman "contractor" who laid the tile used a gray thinset which seeped through the white grout and made it look dirty no matter how much we scrubbed. Wes explained some of the challenges of our job, such as the two layers of tile already there and the awkward radiator vent that was built into the corner. He explained the different options and limitations for dealing with it. He came back to the the work a little over a week later. The new tile looks outstanding - he paid careful attention to detail and figured out a solution for our radiator vent (for which I will be eternally grateful). We also had a terrific experience with the plumber who Wes recommended to take out and then re-install the toilet and sink. The original handyman installed them in an odd way, which we didn't realize at the time. The plumber replaced the plumbing that came out of the wall and made it look much nicer. Overall, we have only positive things to say about the whole experience!

Wes was not my cup of tea. He was a hard worker, prompt and responsive, but also very hyper, quite defensive, talked too much and didn't listen well. I felt he misrepresented one aspect of what he planned to do, and he couldn't tolerate hearing my sense of what went awry. He just wanted to argue with me and tell me how I got it all wrong. I know many others thought he was great, but frankly I couldn't wait for him to leave.

Above and Beyond! S & W Tile were so good to me. My husband was out of town and I wanted to surprise him and do our bathroom floor over. Based on S & W Tiles reviews I decided to call them, and I'm glad I did! Since I didn't know the first thing about what materials I needed, what preparation I needed to do, and how much the job would cost I needed a lot of questions answered. Wes was so good about telling me in detail everything that needed to be done, what I had to do,and how much everything costed in a way that it made sense. Wes was great at answering the phone anytime I called or getting back to me immediately! At the time of the job, Wes arrived early to the job, and when he was all finished he left the place immaculate. S & W Tile were professional from start to finish and the job came out great! Wes was very professional from start to finish. His quality of work was outstanding and we are very happy with the end result. We have had a few other contractors comment on how good the tile looks. Wes was always available to answer questions. He showed up early every day and followed up to ensure that we were satisfied. This was our first time hiring a tile contractor and we wouldn't hesitate to use Wes again in the future for other projects. Wes stands by his work and it certainly shows.

I want to clarify that I didn't have any work done. I want to redo my bathroom and gave him a call. I received his voicemail and he called me back within 25 minutes. I explained to him what I was trying to do, he also asked a couple of questions. Wes took his time, made sure I understood all my options. I decided it was best to leave it as is, but had a couple other questions. I was really impressed with him not treating me any differently once he knew that I wasn't going to use his services. He told me to call if I had any other questions or if he could be of help with anything. It was nice and refreshing that someone was willing to take time out of their day to help.
