I am still in the middle of trying to resolve a poor quality counter top installation with Lowes in Plainville. As with all their services, the work is done by third party sources. In this case my counter tops were supplied by Merrimack Stone in Manchester NH. I rarely use contractors ( I am an accomplished DIYer) but the manmade composite counters are not DIY. I made mistakes but LOWES seems to not want to work aggressively to resolve the issues. In fairness to Lowes, they seem to want to do something but they have no sense of urgency. My mistakes: Lowes requires FULL payment up front. Dumb one on my part, I should have walked away right then I did not get a spec sheet with allowable tolerances for the installation. Dumb on my part. When the installer first contacted me, they told me when THEY could come to my house to measure, I should have canceled the contract then. After a rude conversation on their part, they decided they would be in southern Mass a week or two later and we got together when I was available The measurer came to my house, parked on the lawn, tracked mud all over my house. I should have quit then The measurer got out his clip board, paper, pencil and worn out tape measure. I should have said enough at that point. Who does not use electronic measuring devices in this day and age? The installation was not too bad but after the installers left my wife noticed the front overlap on one section of countertop was significantly different from the rest. In fact, sections vary by about an inch in total, overall, with as much as 1/2 inch variation end to end on some sections. When I contacted LOWES (they called me to see how it went) it seemed they really did not want to hear about the problems and begrugingly called the installer. Then the installer called me saying my wife signed off saying things were OK. The clerk said the owner was away and maybe next week he might be back and then contact me. Really? Maybe next week? We are yet to resolve how the lousy workmanship will be fixed but my advice is stay away from this third party work at LOWES. The far away installer is not a good thing, the pay up front is insanity, and Merrimack Stone has not impressed me at all. All they really had to do was a good job and the response has so far been dismal. They talk a good game, but: paying 100% up front leaves little leverage with anyone. Merrimack Stone, I think, is new to residential installations (read their website) so they don't seem to know how to treat residential customers. I am sure Lowes will think a week or two response time is adequate but that does not work for me. All they had to do was a good job in the first place.
