I was referred by a family friend. We had recently purchased our first home and the deck was in need of attention. It had been painted over by the previous owner and was peeling and chipping up. My wife and I thought about painting it again, but didn't like the look and couldn't agree on a color. My friend told me about Seal-A-Deck and I visited their website to get a quote. I was impressed with the website. It was user friendly and informative. I learned a great deal about the process and I received an instant quote . Seal-A-Deck was a great choice. Mike and his crew were professional and finished the project ahead of schedule. We love our new deck and saved time and money working with Seal-A-Deck. We will be working with Seal-A-Deck again in the future. We have an old wooden fence we want to stain; Mike will be our first call. I would highly recommend working with Seal-A-Deck on your deck or wood restoration project.
Description of Work: Seal-A-Deck restored our old deck. The paint was removed down to the wood and then the deck, rails, posts and steps were treated and stained.

While Michael was a little hard to reach at first, I was very glad I called him. He was pleasant, professional, and kept in touch with me, walking me through the process, helping me decide on colors and finishes, and giving me information on pros and cons of different options and maintenance needs. I was also pleased with the time frame for getting the job done; Michael asked how soon I would like the work done and offered me several dates within two weeks of our first contact. The workers who came to do the deck came on a 90 degree day and did a thorough, professional job. The deck looks beautiful and I would definitely use Seal A Deck again.
Description of Work: Power washed our deck; checked boards for cracks, loose nails etc; scraped, sanded and painted the floor, rails & stairs of the deck.

Came first day to wash the deck (not power wash) . Came a few days later to stain. Additional charge for stairs. Attempted to charge me a lot more for the exact same stain (Sikkens) that I could buy at a local hardware store. When I mentioned the price difference I was told okay, and that I would be charged the same price that I would pay elsewhere. Got a special price through Angie's list for this service- so the price was good but I was expecting more attention to detail Did show up on time and was very polite Did a basic wash and stain. I would compare other providers before I hired them again to enusre I understood exactly what was to be provided. Could be okay for just a plain "kick-around" deck

I first sent an email and then followed up with a phone call. Both were promised to be returned immediately. I have yet to hear back. They asked for a picture and a form to be filled out online to make the process easier. I did both, but that did nothing to ensure even an email back from them. Great to hear from other members that they provide good results, but hard to get over the fact that its a struggle to get a call back to try to hire them.

Two phone calls to the company, two messages left with a very nice woman who promised us someone would call back, but the call back never came. So, no comment on price or work quality, and the person who answered earned the D versus an overall F, but responsiveness was non-existent.

I had tried contacting them a year ago (via their web site) and never heard anything. However, when I got back in touch through Angie's List, I got a phone call 3 hours later. I had an estimate in hand within a couple more hours, and had them scheduled to come start the next day. A single person washed the entire deck system on Friday; the decks then dried for a full day, and 2 people returned on Sunday to complete the job. The deck looks very good, and we're delighted both with the quality of the work and with the promptness.
Description of Work: We have an extensive system of 3 decks (1 large, 2 small) and 3 staircases in our back yard. They hadn't been maintained for 2-3 years. Seal-a-Deck power-washed, lightly sanded, and sealed the entire area. There are lots of railings (with many uprights).

The deck is original to the house (built in the 1990's), but had been previously repainted by the previous owners over 3 years ago before we bought the house. Since we purchased the house the surface of the deck rapidly deteriorated and needed serious attention. I originally contacted the company via their website (after reading the reviews on Angie's List), I completed the online quote form, I uploaded the photos and the dimensions of the deck, and I asked for someone to contact me to discuss the work. I received an auto email back saying someone would be in touch within 24hrs, and over a week later, I had not heard anything back from the company. I called and left a message for the company, stated that I was frustrated that I never heard back from them after my online inquiry, and within 24hrs I had both an email and voicemail message from the owner, Michael apologizing for the delay. He stated that my online information was somehow lost but he retrieved it and would be happy to help answer any questions if I still wanted to work with them. I went back and forth via email and phone with Michael asking questions and revising the work for over 2 weeks; he was very helpful and knowledgeable about what products would work best on our deck (taking in consideration the age of the deck and the trees in the surrounding area) and what color/stain combination would also work best and still be "cost effective". He ended up revising our quote to reflect the changes we decided on and while I thought that the end price was high, I was willing to move forward since I felt that the work would be of a higher standard than going with a different company that perhaps did not specialize in this type of work. There were challenges on the first 2 days the work was done, but I feel that Michael and his employees handled them well. On the first day of work, they were supposed to strip the deck with an eco-friendly product and then wash it down; they found that the paint was not coming off the deck so they did what they could and left a note in our door about the work done that day. The note should have said that they will need to come back for another day of work, or something to that effect, but instead it said that our furniture needed to be moved off the deck (which we had already done), so we were a bit confused. After I spoke with Michael he explained the situation and that they would need to come for another day of work and manually sand down the entire deck to get it down to the original wood. He also did remind me that this would not change the price as they guarantee their prices. On the 2nd day of work, I got a call from the people working at my house saying they blew a fuse and would have stop working for the day (after only 2 hours), and when I tried to call the office and reach Michael I was not able to do so. I later received a call back from him explaining that since we were not home to switch the breaker, they would stay and do what work they could, but that they would need to come back for a 3rd day when we were home in case this happened again. They also left us samples of the stain colors to choose from on the natural wood of our deck (where it had been successfully sanded) and we could email with our choice. On the 3rd day of work, they were there all day and completed the entire deck without issue. In the end, we are extremely happy with the look of our deck and the quality of the work. The deck is beautiful and looks exactly like we thought it would. There is not a single thing that we need them to come back and fix, which is so unusual with any contractor. We plan to use them in the future for annual maintenance on the deck.
Description of Work: I hired them to strip, pressure wash, sand, and restore & repair our deck. they also removed the flower boxes from the exterior railing of the deck and the trellises from the side of the deck. After speaking with Michael, the owner, we decided to stain and seal the horizontal surfaces in a natural wood stain and then do the vertical surfaces in an opaque stain that matched the trim of our house. We also had the lattice work under the deck sealed in the opaque stain.

Seal-a-deck was referred to us by our friends. We did an online quote on their website. then michael followed up the next morning. he suggested a less expensive option than I quoted myself always a plus. The crew showed up when they said they would and were very respectful of our home. after pressure washing they discoveed a few boards that were rotted. They replaced it on their next visit and only charged me for labor the wood was recycled from another job, michael explained it was perfectly fine wood and it would match up better than new wood. He was correct I cannot pick out the replacement boards. We are delighted to have found sealadeck and to have enjoyed our deck finally! I would recommend Seal-a-deck and michael to anyone interested in reviving their deck.

Easy to deal with, responsive, professional and cleaned up after. The price may seem high at first, but my previous AL rated deck servicer charged $900 to do the whole deck. I did that twice ($1800) total and it only lasted one season each time, mostly because it was a latex stain that sat on top of the wood, rather than an oil penetrating stain. One chip and it's only a matter of time before the whole deck treatment was peeling away. I will this Seal a Deck again in the spring to finish the vertical posts and a possible second coat to the horizontal surfaces. The deck looks brand new again and it was worth the cost. I expect that it will last several seasons.
Description of Work: They pressured washed my deck and stairs, completely removed a previous latex based deck treatment, sanded, secured any loose nails and applied two coats of an oiled based wood penetrating redwood stain. This was for horizontal surfaces only (tops of rails, deck etc), not for vertical posts which weather more slowly.

I couldn't be more pleased with the work/result. The 2 men that came were on time, courteous and very hard working. They worked all day through very warm weather, taking short breaks for lunch etc. The finish has held up all summer and still looks great. I was wary of sanding mahogany but it worked out great. I gave a "C" grade for responsiveness because the owner Michael Kaloutas was slow in responding to my emails and voicemails. I had to leave a couple voice mails and email and almost didn't go with Seal a Deck because I thought they were not interested in my business (it had been a couple weeks). Then, they ask you to email pictures of the deck and that took a few emails back and forth. I had to send out photos twice. Everything is done via email/on-line, including payment. However, when I finally did speak with Michael he was very good at answering all my questions. I felt confident that they would do a good job and they did. I had done alot of research and felt confident that Michael knew what he was talking about. The owner or other manager never showed up on the job site while work was being done. Also, I never heard from Michael until about a month later - he called and left a message and wanted to know how the job went and if I had any problems. I sent him an email on Sept 10, 2011 but never heard back. I would hire Seal a Deck again based on the work that they did but think that there needs to be improvement in responsiveness - returning calls and emails.
Description of Work: I have a mahogany deck that was badly in need of refinishing. Seal a deck came first day and power washed the deck and stairs and used a bio safe wood stripper followed by a bio safe conditioner. They set all loose nails/screws. They came back the next week (it rained and needed to dry) and sanded all surfaces followed by 2 coats of stain/sealer.

The job took several days over the course of a week or so. They kept the job moving and communication throughout was good (not excellent but good enough). The work itself was very well done and we are very satisfied with the work. They were careful to explain how colors would work once the deck was sanded down to original wood color and even came out and did 3 samples on the deck for us to consider. I will try to upload an image of the deck showing the work done.
Description of Work: I contacted 3 vendors listed on Angies List for a deck job; needed the deck washed, sanded, and re stained; a few boards needed to be placed with some light carpentry work; also had some railing near a back stairwell re stained as well. One vendor contacted me right away and gave me a quote that was high ($3500); another called me back but never really followed up well at all and I never got a quote from them). Seal a Deck took a little bit to get back to me but once they did they were able to get me a quote in 1 day ($2100) and begin work within 1 week. I was able to put the initial 50% deposit down online with a credit card (very easy to do) and they had their insurance company email me their insurance information as well.

I received an email notification regarding the Angie's List Big Deal coupon for $199. BEFORE I purchased it, I contacted the company to ask if it would be possible to get the service done during the 10 days I would be in Boston on vacation, as it was for my rental house and I currently live in Arizona. I was told that yes, he could do it during that week. I went ahead and purchased the deal. After purchasing the deal, I e-mailed him immediately, let him know I purchased the deal, and tried to coordinate scheduling an exact date, as I didn't want him to get booked up and forget to fit me in during the 10 days I would be in Boston. He emailed me that I needed to send pictures of the deck. I sent him pictures, and then he emailed me a quote that was for $1400. I emailed him back asking him to clarify the quote, as it didn't seem to acknowledge that I had purchased the Big Deal. I certainly wasn't expecting a quote of $1400. The Big Deal purchase covered the entire deck (the square footage of my deck was within the limits of the Big Deal coupon). I did anticipate some extra expenses for the stairs and railings, but $1400 seemed ridiculous, and didn't seem to credit what the Big Deal covered that had already been paid for. Mike never responded, nor did he show up to do the work during the 10 days I was in Boston. I WOULD LIKE A REFUND OF MY $199.
Description of Work: The service was never performed, as the company failed to respond to me and failed to show up to do the work during the week agreed upon.

It took a while (about two weeks) for them to get back to me after I purchased the discount coupon from Angie's List. I called and was told it was an old program but that they would honor it. I took photos of the deck and emailed them to Seal-A-Deck so they could give a good estimate. At that time, the owner told me that he thought the deck had been previously sealed with a stain, from what he could see from the photos, and that he could not put a clear sealer over a stained surface. I told him that a stain had never been used, and that I wanted the deck sealed with a clear sealer. His crew came on Monday June 6 to power wash. The owner wanted me to see what the stain would look like, even though I said I wanted a clear sealer, so on Tuesday he had his crew put a sample of the stain (he said it would be on a 2" square of the deck) on four uprights of the railing. They came back to put a sample of the clear on, but I said they didn't need to do it since I knew I wanted the clear. Unfortunately, I was away the next day (Wednesday 6/8) when the crew came back and STAINED the deck. When I returned home to the now-stained deck, I immediately called the owner who said there must have been some miscommunication..... He sent the crew back the next day (Thursday 6/9) to strip and re-power wash the deck which took over 8 hours. The weather then proceeded to be uncooperative, so the sealing (with a CLEAR sealer) wasn't completed until the following Thursday (6/16). The deck does look as good as new, though there are some spots that don't seem to have enough sealer on them (puddles from rain leave black marks which eventually dry out). The deck was power washed twice, so the wood is probably quite porous. I hope it will last for at least the two years the owner promised; but as I have done in the past, I will be doing my own deck from this point on. This was definitely not worth the money spent! I negotiated with the owner to have $200 refunded for the use of a lot of extra water and the aggravation of the whole process. We received the check at the end of last week (June 29). He also said he would get back to me to see if the final results were to my liking, and he has not.
Description of Work: I hired Seal-a-Deck to power wash and seal my deck after purchasing a coupon from Angie's List for 50% off said service for a 200 sq ft deck. My deck is about 350 sq ft, so the estimate I received was for 150 sq ft. plus railings and 15 stairs. The $1300 estimate included the discount coupon's 200 sq ft. and reflected that. The total $1300 spent includes the $199 coupon and the $200 refund I received.
