+ -1 moreBaker-Elman recommended we purchase the Eternal Advanced Hybrid Water Heating system, which we did. And it was a great recommendation and we're very pleased with the unit. The installation went well and the team that did the job seemed to be experienced and did good work. The two disappointments about the experience were that when I asked that they break the price estimate down for us into its component parts, there was a line item of $500 for "stock". I asked what stock was and was told it was the additional piping and any other hardware required in addition to the heating unit itself (gas pipes, fittings, pvc piping, etc.). $500 seemed like a lot to me and I told them so and was then told that that was just an estimate and that I'd be charged for whatever the actual cost of the "stock" was. We were eventually charged $250 for the stock. Given the relatively predictable costs for stock for such a job, I felt they were not being entirely honest with me and would have charged the $500 if I hadn't raised any questions. Secondly, it turns out we had to hire an electrician to finish the job because it's necessary to have power near the unit so that it can be plugged in. This was not brought up until the unit was about to be installed. So overall, a mixed experience. The good news is, we're very happy with the new water heater.
Description of Work: Installed a new water heater. It was a new hybrid system (tankless), not a water tank (which is what we previously had).

David Elman looked over the work that needed to be done, and provided astute, conservative advice on what should be done immediately, what should be done in the indefinite future, and what should be left alone. He also estimated the cost of the work we agreed would be done. I made an appointment to do the work; the plumbers arrived on time, finished on schedule, and did their work carefully and very well, including clean-up. Some of the work involved removing 90-year-old drains, and required not only care but a bit of creative problem solving. The plumbers were careful to explain that we would have to do a small amount of tile restoration ofter the job was completed; they were quite correct. The bill arrived in the mail a few days later, and was exactly as Dave had estimated. Baker-Elman Plumbing met or exceeded my expectations in every respect.

The man Tony came within that time frame. He quickly found the problem, replaced several old and rotting parts. He was friendly, cleaned up after himself. Explained to me what he was doing when I wanted to know. I received a bill less than a week later.

+ -1 moreMy first Angie's List experience--called Baker Ellman plumbing on a Wednesday, left a voicemail. Did not get a return call. Called back on Friday. A plumber set up an appointment for the following Wednesday with David, "the owner", for an estimate on a major re-piping job. On Wednesday, John showed up, said David should have been the one to come (I was told David was going to come). 10 days passed, and Cheryl, the owner's wife called, very annoyed at me for not being patient with them.
Description of Work: No services were performed because the plumber sent to provide an estimate was not able to do so.

Important note: My husband first called Roto-Rooter (because he didn't really get the point of Angie's List and just went to the phone book). Roto-Rooter came to the house, were really concerned because we have the new plastic pipes, and said they could "rig" something up to fix this problem for around $500. No kidding. We said no thank you. My husband now understands what Angie's list is all about, and we will use Baker Elman as our plumbers of choice from now on.
Description of Work: They replaced the outside sillcock (pipe that goes to the outside water spigot).

I think the rate they charged was reasonable. I will definitely call upon Baker Elman for all my future plumbing needs, it was a fabulous experience dealing with them.
Description of Work: I had a leaky kitchen faucet which needed to be replaced. It was a single faucet, with a side spray. I bought a new fixture, a single faucet with a built in pull-out spray and a soap dispenser to fill the old side spray hole. Mark from Baker Elman came to do the replacement.

Both times they arrived when they said they would, which was also within 24 hours of when I called and requested assistance. The plumber that arrived spent a good deal of time working the drain, and explaining the process as he went along so that I would understand. Although I am sure he stayed over an hour, I was only charged for one hour of labor, and they gave me their 10% off labor Angie's list discount. Three weeks later when a separate faucet in the home would not shut off, I called them again, and they came quickly and made the repair in no time. I was again only billed for one hour of labor, with a 10% discount, and for parts. They also allow payment by credit card.
Description of Work: Cleaned sink drain which was utterly clogged. Repaired a faucet that would not shut off.

+ -1 moreI discovered a leaky hot water pipe and a rotted tempering valve coming from my burner. Looked through Angies List and found the closest plumbing company and saw that they also had an "A" rating. I called and left a message on their answering machine on Sunday evening to schedule service expecting a return call sometime within a few days or maybe never due to the size of the job. Surprisingly I received a call early the next morning and scheduled the service call for early afternoon during my lunch hour. I arrived home 10 minutes before the scheduled time and the service technician was already there waiting, I was impressed. The service technician was very pleasant, worked very quickly and was very organized. I went downstairs to check on his progress and I saw that he had laid his new piping and old piping side by side to make sure the piping was put back in the exact order. In the end, he checked to make sure there were no leaks coming from any welds and cleaned up promptly. I would without a doubt use Baker-Elman plumbing again.
Description of Work: Hot water pipe and tempering valve coming from the burner was replaced.

Better still, when I called the next day having gotten befuddled about when my appointment was (the following day), they very nicely sent someone out anyway. I was impressed by the plumber, who clearly knew what he was talking about, made suggestions, considered my costs, and, despite allergies, was nice to my pushy cat. ---This company, by the way, was the first I've ever used to spontaneously volunteer an Angie's List discount.
Description of Work: I have a frequently-stopped-up toilet. I needed someone to both fix its latest little problem & advise me about replacement. This plumber did both very well; and also looked at some other plumbing problems & agreed to give estimates.

+ -1 moreThey were ready to come earlier than I wanted them to and were willing to wait before coming which I really appreciated. The plumber was extremely nice and helpful and didn't mind my watching him work so I could learn what to do myself in the future. They forgot to include the Angie's 10k% discount (I hadn't given them the coupon) but immediately gave me the discount when I called. Overall I'd definitely recommend them over the other plumbers on the list whose names appear before them.
Description of Work: They were excellent and extremely reasonable in terms of cost, charging just $120 an hour (the first 15 minutes is always for travel) which is much much more reasonable than all of the other plumbers I called from the list. They fixed the disposal, showing me what had gone wrong and explaining how to keep the disposal working more effectively and longer. They replaced the part on the toilet that was causing it to run constantly and again showed me what I can do if there are difficulties in the future. They also showed me how to clean out the part of the faucets that gets clogged up. It turned out that it took less than a hour so we checked the basement to see if there was any leaking there.

Although there was widespread flood damage in our region, they responded to our call quickly and explained several possible outcomes, with pricing. Someone was here within an hour. M. explained the procedure, the possible outcomes, and successfully re-lit the unit (which we had been unable to do). He gave us additional advice about our water heater and also our air conditioning system. Nice guy, good outcome.

+ -1 moreIt was fantastic. Even though no actual work was performed, I have never had as favorable an impression of a plumbing company. I was extremely impressed.
Description of Work: I called for help with a leak that seemed to be coming from my bathtub down into a closet below the tub. They talked me through a number of possibilities for what was likely going on, which led to a diagnosis that the leak was not in the plumbing at all but rather likely from a space in the caulking around the tub. For that reason, we ultimately concluded that it did not make any sense for them to come out to look at the plumbing. They did not charge me for any of the back-and-forth with them, even though it involved several phone calls overall late one evening. They were extremely responsive and professional and very courteous. I had an extremely favorable impression of their company and service and will definitely call them for my plumbing needs in the future.

+ 0 moreI called Baker Elman on Tuesday, and if I had been home, they would have come out that day. Instead, we found a time that worked on Thursday. They were running a bit behind, but called me before my appointment to let me know. On arrival, they started right at the problem. After about 20 minutes, they determined they couldn't fix it and that I'd have to call someone with different tools. As I was getting my checkbook out, he said there would be no charge since the problem wasn't fixed. He gave me the number of someone that he's worked with the past for bigger issues, and was on his way. Even though my problem wasn't fixed, they earned a lifelong customer. I highly recommend them for honest and quality of service.

He clearly knew what he was doing, and was good at explaining how these systems work. I would definitely call him for any plumbing problems in the future, and highly recommend him.
Description of Work: I had two heating systems in my 2-family house that had been converted from steam heated by oil to steam heated by gas. This conversion was done by a different plumbing company in September or October 2008. Last winter I noticed some banging noise in the pipes coming from both systems. The installer made several trips to try to remedy the problem -- without success. This winter the problem became significantly worse, with the noise now being like a jackhammer, intermittent, occurring every time the system recycled (which was about every 20 minutes), more bothersome during the night (when people try to sleep). The installer claimed "this is what happens when you try to put new systems into old homes." I found this explanation totally unacceptable, with evidence provided in the house next door where a similar conversion was done by another installer from a different company, and where there has never been a problem. Having nothing else to offer, I felt it was time to consult Angie's List, which is where I found Baker Elman Plumbing. I called and spoke to David Elman, and we made an appointment for 1:00 o'clock on January 15. He arrived at 12:40, and I was VERY glad to see him. He assessed the systems, drained both boilers three times each, refilled them with water, and the problem was solved within two hours! He explained there was sludge in the pipes, and showed me how to do the same thing he had done, with instructions to do so once a year.

+ 0 moreHe came out and gave us an estimate and it was the lowest estimate. I described the pipe to him and he asked me send him a picture with my cell phone, he knew exactly what the problem was. He sent a young man out to do the repair and he repaired both items for less than the price of competitors estimates. In regard to the toilet repair they came out twice and the toilet is working great. They have a fair price, run a family business, and it is a pleasure to have them do work in my home.
Description of Work: They have come to my home twice. The first time they came to repair a leak in a pipe in our heating system. They also repaired a leak in a pipe that goes to the garbage disposal. The second time they came was to repair a toilet.

+ 0 moreOverall, a mostly excellent experience. Baker-Elman was able to install a new water heater one day after ours broke. They gave me advice about whether to replace my water heater under manufacturer warranty or to buy a new (better) one. They then located a replacement water heater and handled the exchange so that I didn't have to pay for a new one. The installation was fast and they did a neat job. My only very minor complaint is that rather than cleaning the metal shards (a necessary by-product of working on old copper pipe) from my kitchen faucet to restore flow, they removed the flow restrictor. I would have appreciated it if they asked about doing that first.
Description of Work: Replaced water heater that was under manufacturer warranty. This included retrieving a new heater and returning the broken heater for a credit.
