Baker Elman replaced one of my water heaters (electric, 50 gallon) that was leaking. They gave me a quote and the final price was exactly the quote amount. They arrived on time (actually a little early) and they were very nice and respectful. The replacement went very quick, especially since it was not just a simple replacement as I have two water heaters in series, so it was not just a simple swap-in-swap-out. The two plumbers they sent out were great about making sure they didn't leave any dripping water when emptying the old water heater and when removing the old one (my water heaters are on the third floor of my condo). As far as service goes, they were excellent; if I had any issues it would be when asking about water heater replacement options, I only got one and it was pretty expensive; the other issue is they didn't break up on the invoice the cost of the water heater vs the cost of the installation. Given the costs of water heaters from Home Depot and Lowes with similar specs and warranty, $1300+ seemed like a lot.

The plumbers from Baker-Elman arrived on time, were very professional, and clearly knew their stuff. They were efficient and completed the job very fast. They aren't the cheapest plumbers, but sometimes you get what you pay for, and I had a high level of confidence in their work. I'd definitely use them again or recommend them to others.

Very good outcome. I was pleasantly surprised. (see above for details)
Description of Work: The water pipe leading to the spout in my bathtub broke and needed to be replaced. Baker Elman advised me to send a picture of the problem to them (by email) so they could better assess the situation and ensure that the plumber brought the right tools with him ( brilliant idea I thought). The day before the appointment, the company called to report they had viewed the pictures and that the problem was bigger than they had originally thought when we previously talked about it on the phone. So that was good- I was prepared for a bigger bill, and understood why. The plumber arrived on time and went to work right away. He was personable, professional,l efficient , did a great job and the price was very reasonable. I would use this company again.

My up and down stairs neighbor's water heaters both gave out recently, and since all 3 were installed at the same time, I decided to be proactive about replacing mine. I purchased my own, so I just needed an installation. The first estimate I got was $800-$1000, the second was $600. Then I consulted Angie's list, and got an estimate of $300-$350 from Baker Elman. In addition to having the lowest price, I felt they answered my (annoying) questions honestly and patiently. They showed up early, as promised, and had the job done in under 2 hours. They left the place clean and showed me how to adjust the temperature. They even disposed of a dead bird that dropped out of the chimney unexpectedly! (I want to say that was Kevin, but I'm bad with names). On top of everything, they reminded me - twice! - of their 10% Angie's List coupon. I'm very pleased with the service they provided and would definitely use them again and recommend them to anyone.

My experience with Baker Elman was extremely positive from start to finish. It was very easy to reach them and to make an appointment quickly. Everyone I worked with was accommodating, professional, and friendly. John and Jared, the two plumbers who were assigned to install our new water heater were terrific. They arrived right on time and went to work. Even though there are some tight spaces in the basement and kitchen, they were extremely careful when removing the old and bringing in the new heaters. They completed their work on time, took the old water heater with them, cleaned up thoroughly, and were really professional and nice. I feel like they went over and above! I would recommend this company and their staff without hesitation based on my experience.

When our kitchen range was installed as part of a kitchen renovation about five years ago, the gas connection was made before the cabinet work on either side of the stove had been installed. Unfortunately, the gas flex used was too short to allow the range to be pulled out enough for repair work by the appliance service company. Baker-Ellman came was able to figure out how to gain access to the gas connection at the stove and to disconnect it at that point. It was then a simple matter to pull the stove out and replace the short flex with a longer one. Everything about this experience was good, beginning with my phoning the company and dealing with a pleasant and knowledgeable woman (not an answering service) who understood the problem and scheduled the work. She called the day of the appointment to reconfirm and tell me the technician would arrive within the hour. The tech knew his trade and was very pleasant and careful not to harm the kitchen floor or counter-tops with tools or the pieces of the stove which had to be set aside for access to the gas connector. I was asked how I learned about Baker-Ellman, and when I said I had used Angie's List, I even was offered a discount on the labor.

I was happy with them. The guy that they send out was great. I showed them other plumbing problems I had and they told me what I need to do. I needed to get faucets and stuff like that and once I have done that they would come back out. But that would be scheduled for another call. I have not got down getting the faucets yet. One of the things that were nice is that they were going to leave the invoice open so that I could add to it if I managed to get the stuff that I needed like the new faucets for the bathroom in time. I still had not got down to picking up the faucets. So I ended closing it and billing it separately. I plan to use them in the future.

I might have gotten their name from the Angie’s List magazine. They are a company that I have seen for years. I think one of the main plumbing guys from the company lives in my town and not too many streets away. He has been around forever and he was still in business with the same address. So, I just called him up. They came on time and changed everything. There was no mess. I was a little worried because of water all over the place, but they took care of business. They weren’t even here once I came home because my husband was home. He said that they were already gone. Their price was exactly as they had estimated. It was $136 for the labor and materials. So, there was no surprise. They gave me an estimate of how much it would cost based on how long it would take on each of the jobs. So, that is what it was. I would definitely use them again.

I use both Service Magic and Angies List to search good contractors. I usually do not write a comment if it is just an average contractor. But, Baker-Elman Plumbing provided me with excellent service, so I want to write a comment to say "thank you"! I have an old bathroom with leaky shower head and leaky shower knob. It really bothered me, because of constant dripping water after I turned off the shower knobs. I did a lot of research before I called Baker-Elman and called 2 other highly rated plumbers, who just could not fix the problem. My research showed the problem was caused by a leaky shower valve. The office manager asked me to send a digital photo of the shower knobs, which I did. The next day, they sent in a plumber, replaced my leaky shower valve and solved my headache. My extensive prior research did help. But I have to say this is a well-run and well managed business.

They ran the gas lines through my attic, they put in the wrong size gas lines and said that they did not know what type of stove that I had, but it was sitting there the whole time. I live in a second story and they ran the lines though the front of my downstairs neighbors closet and lied and said that they spoke to the neighbors about it which wasn't true because they were out of the country. They ran hot water into my refridgerator and then they said that I could just add ice to it. They improperly installed the washer and dryer.. The supervisor came and was already really nice. I wrote a letter to them with my complaints. They responded by denying everything. Eventually they refunded me $500 of a 4300.00 bill.

Response from Baker Elman Plumbing
The member called our office for an estimate to install washing machine connections and run a gas line to her dryer and stove in her second floor unit back in March of this year. our manager, went over where the water, drains and gas line were to be run. Steve sent our an estimate that clearly stated that our lines will run from the basement through the first floor up to the second floor. He explained that it would pass through the closet below and into the closet that she was installing her washer/dryer in directly above. He told her to have the neighbor's closet cleaned out so we could work in it. The pipes originally were being installed in the back wall of the closet, but they were installed on the side wall toward the front by accident. After a conversation with her and explaining why the change was made, she understood that the piping was safer to the side so that when the homeowner put things in the back of the closet they would not bump the pipes and cause a possible leak down the road. We also contacted Carla, the owner of the apartment, and explained the situation to her. She told us to leave the pipes as is and if it became a problem we offered to move them for her. Steve, when meeting with her initially quoted a price for the gas line based on a standard residential stove. At no time did she tell him that she was going to be purchasing a commercial type stove which requires a larger size gas line. We went back and re-ran the gas line, at no charge, to the proper size for the stove. As far as the ice maker line is concerned, it was clearly our fault and we immediately corrected the problem. We had issues installing her stack washer/dryer because it was taller than the opening which should have been measured by her when she was purchasing it. We are sorry for any inconvenience that this might have caused her.

I requested them via Angieslist and within minutes I got a call from their office wanting to schedule an appointment. They were at my house on the promised date and did the job well. I noticed that the problem was not solved and I called them back, they sent their plumber again for a return visit and did not charge anything. He did a minor tweak and that did the trick. But they were very professional and honest during the whole time. Would certainly recommend them.

They worked for an hour and a half and they replaced a tube because ours was salty. We tried to get them to do something that was a little more laborious but the person that came out was unwilling to do it, even though it would have helped us. We were trying to replace the brass part that came with the tube on the faucet. In California we read a report that the brass part causes cancer in the long run so we wanted him to replace it and he did not want to do it because he did not have the parts to do it and the faucet was in such a place that it is a little hard to get to; so it was a little difficult for him to do it. But other than that he did a very good job. His pricing was quite fair and they were very responsive and punctual. I will use them again in the future.;

David Elman came on September 7th to give us an estimate for several plumbing issues that needed work and I was impressed by David's professional attitude. We received the estimate promptly and based on Angies List recommendations and our impressions of Davd himself, we thought we had hired someone who could to the job professionally and courteously with excellent quality. Unfortunately, they sent Kenny to do the actual work, who was neither professional, nor courteous and did not give the quality service we would have expected. We noticed that new Insinkerator installed leaked inside of the cupboard right after installation. Luckily Kenny was still onsite and was able to fix the leaky hose, but after he had left, we noticed that there was still some leakage on the bottom of the cupboard. Since we were unsure if this was a new leak or some left over water from the previous leak, we called Kenny back to take a look at it. He assured us that it was the leftover water from the first time it leaked, but because we lack faith in his quality of work, we are checking the cupboard regularly for water leakage. This shouldn't be happening with a brand new unit. The installation of the automatic shut-off for the washing machine was another job we were unhappy with. After completing the install, Kenny showed us the manual and since we had no time to actually test it at the time, he told us we could read it if we had any problems. Sure enough, 3 days later, when doing a load of laundry, the machine stopped after 10 seconds of use. We tried to read the manual to see if it was something simple that we could fix, but were unable to see exactly what to do. After we explained our emergency to their office, they sent Kenny around promptly, but his response to a demonstration of the problem? "There's nothing I can do about it, it must be your washing machine that's at fault." We explained that the washing machine was fine up until the installation of the automatic shut-off valve and if there's nothing else he can do to fix the problem, then let's uninstall the automatic shut-off and put it back the way it was. He then suggested I call their office to request the uninstall and luckily there was someone there who could at least talk him through some troubleshooting that determined that the washing machine just needed to be unplugged and reset. We appreciate him showing us where in the manual this information could be found, but the manner in which he explained it made us feel like fools for not being able to fix the problem ourselves. This is not the way to encourage customer loyalty, so this is the last time we will use Baker-Elman for our plumbing needs.

We are very sorry to hear about your complaint regarding Kenny’s professionalism and quality of work. we have never received a complaint regarding Kenny or any other employee. All of our employees are instructed to be courteous and act professionally at all times in our customers' homes. We expect our employees to check their work when they have completed their work so that we don’t have to return to repair anything. Sometimes things happen when we leave and, of course, we return to take care of the problem. That is why we warranty our parts and labor for one year. He was in the home when you said something was leaking and sure enough he tightened what was necessary to repair the problem. The water that was on the bottom of the cabinet was as Kenny said the residual water from the old unit that was replaced. As far as the washing machine unit shut off, Kenny has never come across that problem that you experienced. First he called the office to ask what he thought would be the best way to handle the problem and not being plumbers we advised removing the valve and seeing if the washing machine worked without the issue he was describing. After he said that it wasn’t as simple as that we asked him to call David. David had experienced this problem before and was able to troubleshoot the issue with Kenny and he was able to reset the unit so that the washing machine worked properly. We assume that there is no longer a problem as we have not heard from you concerning it. If there was a problem with the shut off we would have replaced it in guarantee but he was able to resolve the issue. As you can see from our Angie’s List reviews customer service is very important to us and to our business. We feel that every customer is an individual and we try to work hand in hand with each one to ensure that their experience goes well. Unfortunately that is not always the case. We hope that you will reconsider using us in the future and if not we wish you well.

Baker-Elman was not the first plumbing company that I called, but they have proven to be the best. They made time for me in their very busy schedule and were very accommodating as I had house guests due in a few short days. Steve came in immediately after my initial call and gave me, what has turned out to be an accurate time frame and a very fair price estimate for the repair. Unlike the first plumber I called, I must say that Baker-Elman came in at less than half the time and 1/4th of the price of that first estimate!!! John, who did the repair, was on time, friendly, neat and very professional. He took the time to explain that the original PVC pipe was the wrong angle and too short to make the appropriate and solid connection. After the install, he thoroughly tested the connection and was meticulous in his clean-up. Would I use Baker-Elman again? Without a doubt. Professional, accurate, prompt and fair. What's not to like?
Description of Work: A number of months after the re-installation of a toilet by people who re-tiled the upstairs bathroom, mold began forming on the ceiling one floor below directly under the toilet. After my handyman opened up the ceiling, he discovered that there was a leak and the source of the leak was from the toilet's PVC pipe connection to the main stack. Baker-Elman came in and accurately diagnosed the problem. They quickly installed the appropriate type and length of PVC and explained that the slightest shift of the PVC during the re-install of the toilet was enough to slightly dislodge the pipe connection to the main stack, creating a very slow leak.

After a couple of frustrating weeks of trying to get another plumber to correct the poor installation job he'd done, it was a pleasure to have Baker-Elman send someone at the first free slot they had available (one business day after I'd called). As they promised, the central office kept me informed of when the plumber would arrive. When he did arrive, he quickly diagnosed the problem and set about replacing the bad stop and torn line, a task made particularly challenging by the cramped space under the sink and some tricky geometry under the dishwasher itself. Long story short, the dishwasher works perfectly now and the job took under 2 hours. We'll definitely be using Baker-Elman in the future, as it's remarkably pleasant to work with them.
Description of Work: We had recently had another plumber install a new dishwasher in our kitchen, but the dishwasher didn't seem to be working. Multiple visits from that plumber failed to diagnose the problem, so we called Baker-Elman to repair it. Ultimately, Baker-Elman discovered that the line bringing water into the dishwasher was both torn and connected to a bad stop underneath the sink. They replaced the stop and the line and the dishwasher now works perfectly.

In response to my noon time call for help regarding a leaking hot water tank the Baker Elman office immediately ascertained the the model and year of installation and determined that the leaking tank was ,unfortunately, out of warranty. We discussed the replacement options and the costs and I decided to install another Rudd. Within 20 minutesof that telephone conversation the plumber was at our door ready to begin the removal process while two of his colleagues were pulling then new tank out of the warehouse and loading it on their truck . They arrived ten minutes later and within an hour the thre of them had removed the old tank and plumbed the new one. They were meticulous both in their work and their cleanup afterwards.First class all around!

My sink has been making a glugging noise forever. It's been getting worse. I had used Baker Elman to install hot water heaters in the past and thought I'd call on them again. I wish I had not. They were supposed to call to let me know they were on their way so I could make sure I was home. They did not. By luck, I was home and let the plumber in - however because the sink was not making that noise at the exact time that the plumber arrived, he could not tell me what it was happening. He did not wait more than two minutes to see if the sink glugged - he just left. Essentially all he did was show up at my house, run the faucet for 1 minute - determine that it was not clogged - which I already knew and had noted when I called in to schedule the appointment - and then tried to charge me a full "service" fee of $130 dollars. I understand that a business has operating costs, but I know for a fact that this plumber was already in my area, doing other work, and had stopped by to work on my sink. He was literally on my property for no more than 5 minutes. I feel as though I've been robbed. When I called in to dispute the charges, I offered the company $20 for their troubles to come by, which I thought was more than fair. She did not accept, and insisted on charging at least $65 for the visit. If that is their service model, then I should have been told upon making the appointment that there is a flat service charge for showing up at my house - however they were not at all up front about that cost. I will never use this company again.

Response from Baker Elman Plumbing
We received a call from the member that she was complaining about her sink glugging. We set up a service call for that day because we had calls scheduled in Jamaica Plain. Elizabeth called her and told her we would be coming in the afternoon and she was grateful for the information. When Kenny arrived at the house he tested the kitchen sink and heard no sounds. He did plunge the sink to try to help her out, but it is difficult to repair a problem that doesn't exist when you are there. We have GPS in our vehicles and I ran a report and saw that it took a half an hour to get to her house from Allston and he spent 15 minutes in the house not the two minutes that the member is claiming. As a prior customer of 5 service calls the member should have been aware of the service call charges from our company. Just because the technician is in the area doesn't mean that the charges are not the same as they always are. Instead of charging her a full service call of $130.00 which is 15 minutes of travel time and 45 minutes in the house which is a flat rate for the first hour, I reduced it to $65.00 to try to help her. She was incensed by this and expected to only pay $20.00. She wrote a check to our company then told Kenny that she was going to let it bounce and then proceeded to call the office to argue about it. After we hung up she sent an e-mail informing me that she stopped payment of the check. As anyone can see by our many Angie's List responses our business model is that of fairness, honesty and reliability. We do not ever rob anyone and are willing to make concessions when we feel that it is due. In this case however, to think that we can repair something that isn't happening is an impossible task for anyone.

Before we started work, they asked for photos of the work that needed to be completed. At first, they didn't have the correct piece, so we re-scheduled, but they were able to complete the work. They were very professional and I am satisfied with the work.
Description of Work: Baker-Elman came out to help repair a boiler vent to bring it up to code so that there would be enough space between the venting pipe and any structure around it.

Steve identified the various problems, described the work needed and provided accurate (and free) estimates. The work was done over multiple visits. Everyone we dealt with was courteous and professional. It was easy to schedule appointments, and everyone came on time. The end results are great. If any issues arise on work completed, they will address them free of charge. Would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Moved a gas line to the outside grill area, fixed leaky faucet, supplied and installed toilet, replaced sillcock line, installed kitchen faucet, and cut unused pipes in the basement

This was a great company to work with. They were flexible with dates to come out and service our issue. They came on time. Very friendly and very efficient. We ended up paying under our quoted price. The whole experience was great--from booking the appointment to being pleasantly suprised with the bill.
Description of Work: Gas Dryer Installation that needed an extended gas line
