I called about a leaking radiator and Baker Elman Plumbing was able to get repairmen out to my house the same morning. The guys were friendly and professional. They were able to fix the problem and gave us advice on other radiator issues. I also received a 10% discount on the labor through Angie's List membership.

I've owned a house since 1988 and after using the services of many plumbing companies and individual plumbers I can safely say I've never encountered as reliable and outstanding a plumbing service as the one provided by Baker Elman. When I needed to replace an old gas boiler with a new heating system (including a new water heater) they gave me a detailed quote that came a bit below quotes from other providers. The installation went flawlessly and I have been enjoying the new system for the last 8 months. I later asked them to respond to a leaking pipe (not related to the new heating system) and they came to fix it the same day. I also used their services to install new appliances (gas oven, dishwasher) in a rental property. All their plumbers are great professionals and great to work with. The gem of the operation is their office manager who usually responds immediately to a phone call or an email, unlike anything I've experienced with other plumbers.

Copper pipe inside an interior wall burst during a cold-spell. Baker-Elman came to the house within 48 hours and did a quick and professional job in cutting-and-patching the burst pipe. One suggestion and one comment: 1. The fellows came into the house wearing snow-covered boots. Some contractors (the best ones, in our experience) clean their shoes and/or wear cloth booties when they come in from bad weather. Our house is not that neat -- so perhaps they made a judgment that it just didn't matter if they tracked snow around inside. But I'd have appreciated the effort anyway. 2. The bill came promptly and we weren't surprised by the amount. However, their bills state the following: "Please be aware if any parking tickets are incurred while working in your home you will be responsible for this fee." For me, I could never accept a plumber's driving risk: what if he parked in front of a hydrant or double parked, and his vehicle was towed? Would I be on the hook for that bad judgment? We live in the suburbs and have plenty of on-site parking, so this is probably a theoretical risk for me. Still, the Baker-Elman policy seems wrong, because I can't make a judgment about driving choices of their plumbers -- and don't want to. Finally, this was the first time I used the firm, and didn't know about the policy until I got their bill several days after the service call. If they have an unusual requirement and need to stick with it, better to advise potential customers of this policy/risk in advance. Then the customer can help to avoid the double-parking problem and cost.

Baker Elman plumbing is very professional and know their jobs. the initial estimate was given by Steve. he identified main issues for pipe freezing issue during winter and also suggest to reduce water pressure to eliminate the water banging sound in the basement. the estimate was accurate and they charge me exactly same amount for the job described. on the actual work day, plumber John and Bob did a great job to install water pressure regulator, expansion tank and repipe the old ones to prevent freezing pipe issue. even it's right after snow, they arrived on time and completed the job ahead of schedule. I used to have hot water pipe frozen at least one time during cold winter and it took me a lot of effort to resolve it, let alone the worry in my mind what if the pipes were broken and how much I have to pay to repair water damage? I'm extremely happy with the high quality work this company provides.
Description of Work: 1) install the water pressure reducing valve, expansion tank for water heater, 2) Repipe water lines to remove old, unused pipe, shorten the non-compliant pipeline. the end results is hot water pipe don't go outside thus avoid all frozen pipe issue during cold winter. 3) reduce the pipe connection and fix water banging issue.

from the minute i got on the phone to book an appointment i knew i was headed in the right direction with this company. the plumber/estimator arrived, listened to my problem (a water heater, not pipes, that banged continually). he measured the psi from the water main to my house and it was 100psi and he explained that 60psi was better. said he would send an estimate by email and he did the next day. it was a bit more than expected but going through his item by item price it seemed fair. in the end it was lt was about $300 less. he had estimated 2 men for 3 hrs and it ended up 1 man for 3 hrs. the plumber who did the work was very nice, considerate, on time, and knew his stuff. he even tried to cut the time to 2 hrs but did 3 hrs to make sure the work was good. he even found a slight leak and fixed it.
Description of Work: installed a pressure reducer for water coming into the house as well as a related expansion tank. involved a lot of piping etc.

My disposal was barely working and I called and asked if they could fix it. After describing the problem, the receptionist could tell that it would probably need to be replaced after finding out how old it was. I asked her if they had a standard model available to install or if I had to buy one in advance. The lady (whose name I didn't record) asked me what brand I had (Insinkerator) and then said that they would be able to supply a new one. The plumber Frank was excellent and very nice. However, as I watched him installing the disposal, I noticed that the box said that it was a compact model (PRO 750) which I had not requested. Although the outside of it was almost as big as my old disposal, the inside container looked half the size as the one I had earlier. When I asked him about the model, he said that the 3/4HP was the size they usually installed. Later I contacted the office via email to express my disappointment with getting a compact model rather than a standard model which I had requested on the phone. Insinkerator has a PRO 880 model which is described in their literature as the "ideal choice for a wide range of kitchens." In other words, the standard size model. It has a more powerful engine, a longer warranty and a larger stainless steel grind chamber, among other things. A woman named Susan left a message on my phone literally telling me that the Pro 750 Compact Size model that they had just installed was " not small or compact." She listed 3 different models that they install Compact, Cover Control(for households w/children) and Badger 5 (for rental properties). It is astonishing that she would tell me point blank that the compact disposal was not compact. When I confronted her with this she finally admitted there were other models that they could order but those are the ones they have in stock. Well, it is too bad they didn't tell me that to begin with and let me know I had the option of ordering the PRO 880 standard size which I would have done. Instead they installed a compact without telling me that was what they were going to do and tried to pass it off as a standard model which it is not. This is mainly a communication problem with the people in the office, the plumber himself was a great guy and was not aware of the specifics of what I had requested. In general I like this company but was disappointed with the ladies, first by not giving me complete or correct information on the phone when I initially called about what they would install and not letting me know about the option to order other models. Then when I complained about the model their customer service person dropped the ball by acting like the model that was installed was the standard model and never apologized for their sloppiness. Maybe it is what they usually install but it is not the standard model. If that is what they usually install in most homes, one wonders why they are doing that. So they won't have to bother to stock another model? I wasn't expecting them to uninstall the disposal, but they could have done better than pretend that no one would ever know the difference. Condescending and Lame. For the leaking faucet in the bathroom I had to call them back because it was leaking under the sink after he fixed the cartridge above the sink. Another guy came back the day i called and did a very thorough job of repairing that, including even rerouting the pipes. He said that sometimes when the valves under the sink have not been used in awhile, shutting the water off can cause them to start leaking even though the other original leak was fixed.

When I went down to put in laundry on Saturday evening, I found a pool of water on the basement floor under the boiler. After a little inspection I found that there was water dripping out of an overflow pipe on the side of the boiler. I stuck a bucket under the drip and checked it out a bit. I couldn't find a way to make the water stop so I called Baker-Elman based on the reviews here. I got the on-call plumber who asked me a bunch of questions and walked me through a few things to see if he could help me stop the dripping without him having to come out. I wasn't able to get it to stop myself, and the drip was pretty fast. Having two small kids I didn't want to have to empty the bucket every hour overnight, so I asked him to come out. He told me right up front what the hourly rate would be because it was a weekend, I agreed and he came. He discovered that the emergency valve had failed and said that he could fix it then at the overtime rate or have me schedule it on Monday at the regular rate. When I opted for Monday, he tried all kinds of things to rig something up to funnel the water into the laundry sink, but physics was against us so it wasn't possible. I dug around in my basement and found a giant gardening bucket that meant we could go longer between bucket dumps, and I sent him on his way. He was overall really great and that call cost me one hour at the overtime rate (not included in my cost of service above). I called Monday morning to set up an appointment. The woman I talked to had me take a picture of the valve and email it to her to verify that they had the part, she quickly called back to say that they did and gave me a four-hour window in which to expect someone. I got a call at the very start of that time frame, the plumber (different guy) showed up within 20 minutes and was able to drain the system, replace the part and check that each radiator was properly refilled within about an hour. While waiting for the system to heat up to check that all of the radiators were coming up to heat, he checked on an off-system heater that hasn't been working. He was able to tell me what was going on with that other heater, and even answered some other questions I had about some potential stuff we'd been thinking about getting done. He took my email address and I received an email bill the next day. Overall a really great experience.

A new customer, we set up a date and time for the plumber to fix a dripping faucet in the bathtub/shower area. I received a call earlier than expected asking if the plumber could come earlier. I was home and happy that he came earlier. He fixed the problem in approximately 15 minutes with no cleanup for me. I await the bill.

This turned out to be a very positive experience on a freezing cold day that started with a cold shower. When I discovered that my hot water heater had broken and leaked all over my basement, I checked Angie's List for local plumbers. Steve at Baker Elman answered the phone at 7 AM and asked me to call him back with the make, model, and serieal number of the heater. He called me back in fewer than 30 minutes with the news that I was no longer under warranty. (Nice that he checked!) He then recommended a different manufacturer and offered a 6 year or a 10 year warranty along with a credit for being on Angie's List. Steve told me that he would call as soon as he knew when he could get someone out here. The office called around 10am and by 10:30 that same morning Drew and Chris were at my front door. I showed them the basement and left them to it. In fewer than 90 minutes they were finished,, and they had pumped out the water from the entire basement! I had expected to have to rent a wet vac. Drew and Chris coudln't have been more efficient or professional, and they left things in cleaner and better shape than when they started. To a single person who doesn't have someone to 'handle' these issues while I am at work, Baker Elman was a dream. I will call them for any plumbing issues I have!

I needed a plumber for the first time when we discovered our heat didn't work due to a leak in a boiler pipe. A plumber was able to come to our house within one day of me contacting them online through Angi's List. The first repair didn't seem to stop the leak so after two more days I contacted them again and plumber was at our house the next day to put a second repair on the pipe. That has worked well for a week so far and I don't anticipate any other problems. I had read good things about Baker-Elman's good service and now I can vouch for it myself. They will be the first company I call for any other plumbing needs I have and therefore I highly recommend them to others. They were highly professional, friendly to work with, and didn't charge for the second call because it was about the same repair which I think is very fair.

They did a great job! Ran into a a couple of problems with the faucet replacement. The old faucet was rusted on and needed to be sawed off. Then it turned out we were missing a part for the new faucet - the plate to be placed to cover the top of the sink that the faucet would be installed on. When I called the local plumbing showroom where we purchased the faucet they did not have the plate in stock. The plumber called the Baker Elman office and asked for help in locating the part because by that time the old faucet had been removed, and since it was sawed off it could not be put back on. The office found a plumbing supply place where the part was in stock and I was able to pick it up so the faucet installation could be finished the same day. While I was away getting the part the plumber replaced the water filter. The plumber spent time adjusting the pull out faucet so that it would come out and go back in smoothly. The plumber and the company went above and beyond our expectations. We are delighted with the new faucet and water filter.

We're still new-ish homeowners and our boiler is still somewhat of a mystery to us. We had it maintenanced last year by a different company and didn't really feel that they did anything (other than tell us they thought our boiler was about to die, which we weren't sure we should believe). So this year we used Angie's List and saw that Baker-Elman was highly rated. Susan, who I talked to on the phone and by email, was so helpful. And when I let her know that my due date was around the same day as our appointment, she made a note. So when an earlier appointment became available she called me first thing! When they came they actually inspected and "conditioned it," talked with my husband (I wasn't home), and took down the serial number so they could call the manufacturer and find out the boiler's age. No talk about us needing to buy a new boiler. When the bill came it was a littler higher than I expected, so I politely emailed to ask why. Once again Susan called and talked me through it and ended up charging us the original quote. We will definitely be calling them again next year to service the boiler, and I would not hesitate to recommend them!

My aprtment is out of cold water. Kenny from Baker Elman came and found the issue was that there is a napkin in the pipe. Most likely a stupid job done by some previous plumber to stop water and forgot to take it out. Kenny cut open the pipe, found the issue and re-connected the pipe. Kenny is very professional and experienced. I would highly recommend Kenny and this compnay and would definitely use them again in the future! Thank you, Kenny!

Great experience all the way around. I got a response to the scheduling request within a matter of hours. I even changed the scope to include a faucet bypass for a touch system - no problem at all. The guy arrived on time, told me that the noises were normal and that no work would be required. He then proceeded to do the bypass on the faucet, which he did in a very short period of time. Works great now. I also showed him a pipe where we had a CO leak in the past and he recommended replacing it, so I asked for a quote. The quote was about $700 under that original one. As a result, I will do this work with them. Responsive, prompt, flexible, courteous... and a bargain at $130. I will use them again.

Took off work to meet with rep. They called 30 min before scheduled appt and when I did not immediately return the phone call, they moved on and were unable to reschedule. They did not show for the scheduled appt. they are likely pretty busy so if your schedule is flexible enough to work around them, you may have better success. Unfortunately I am full time employed, which makes that difficult.

Response from Baker Elman Plumbing
The member emailed and then called to schedule for an estimate. We originally scheduled Tuesday November 18 at 11am to meet with the member. The member then emailed and called to see if we could reschedule to an earlier date. We were able to change things around and reschedule the member's estimate to Monday November 17 between 1pm and 2pm. At 12:30pm on Monday the office called the two phone numbers that were provided by the member. There was no answer so we left a message on his cell phone to call the office. We called again at 1pm, again no answer so we left another message. At 1:22pm the member called the office asking if the estimator was still scheduled to come. We explained that we called twice, there was no answer and we left messages, so the estimator moved on to his next estimate. The member said there was something wrong with his phone and that he would get back to the office to reschedule once he checked with his wife. So at that point we were expecting the member to call and reschedule.

Communication with Baker-Elman has always been very good. They have proven to be reliable and punctual, which I highly value. Their costs may be a little higher than other contractors, but still reasonable especially when taking their reliability into consideration. The initial install of a new baseboard heating system a few years ago by another contractor had proven to be insufficient in radiator length. It wouldn't put out enough heat to keep up with recent cold weather patterns. The original contractor vanished into thin air and couldn't be found. Baker came, estimated how much additional length was needed (almost double!), and retrofitted the additional baseboard. The retrofit didn't go without a hitch. The installer required a return trip to the supply store because of a mistake in matching the original baseboard. But otherwise the installation went smoothly and everything appears to be working well. The real test will come in a few weeks when the polar vortex returns (though I kind of hope it doesn't). Because of the hitch, it took longer to complete the install, but despite that they managed to complete the work within one visit. No problems with the Mansfield flush valves on the toilets. The toilets are in good shape so it was significantly cheaper to purchase the valves and labor than to replace them completely, even with long term water savings.

I emailed the company through Angie's List, and got a response that day. They communicated back and forth with me via email to figure out what was going on to save me from having to pay a tech to come out and assess what was going on. Was delayed in having them come by because the water needed to be shut off, and had to get approval from the other tenants in my building. Once I was able to pick a date, Baker Elman sent someone out, and they were on time. The tech was super professional, and very friendly. He fixed both my issues in about 2 hours, and was on his way. Would highly recommend Baker Elman for any plumbing issue you might have.
