They were very professional and efficient. My wife's only gripe was the timing of the project took longer to schedule than initially implied-- but this was really a very minor point. Overall, a very positive experience.

Replaced 60 year old furnace and water tank with high efficiency equipment. They were extremely professional, honest and knowledgable. Installation was also very clean. Probably not the cheapest option out there, but I feel like the quality is what I paid for and I am happy with the results.

Love these guys! Have become my go-to plumbers. First time shower handle broke and I needed a new in sink garbage disposal. Since they had to get parts for the shower and come back a second time, they told me if I bought my own disposal (told me the type to get), it could save me a fair amount of money. Their responsiveness in scheduling is the best I've seen, as well as follow up with me. Most recently they helped when the shower broke again (I bought new fixtures this time), they replaced the fixtures and fixed my toilet that was running since they were here... Great quality, very efficient too

The folks from Baker Elman found straightforward and sensible solutions to a variety of plumbing problems - a shower with low pressure, a toilet that ran, faucets that were leaky and didn't drain properly. The whole job was faster and cheaper than we expected. We called them for this job because last year they came out and looked at a huge project and told us it wasn't necessary, saving us a lot of money. Our insulation contractor told us to move two pipes up into the garage ceiling, but Baker Elman said we could fix the problem for much less money by having a carpenter build wooden boxes put around the pipes.

Plumber was in my house for an estimate and my wife mentioned a leaky bathtub. The plumber went want me to fix that right now? She went yes. He worked for about eight minutes. Sent me a bill for 350.00. An absolute con job. Will not recommend or use again.

We have read the members complaint and we checked for exactly what was sent for his gas line estimate and an invoice for repairing his shower. He was sent a separate invoice for the service cost 194.95 for the shower repair. The materials were $75.95 and the labor charge with the Angie's List discount was $117.00. The estimate to run the gas line was 340.00 plus the permit fee which is what the member thinks he was charged for the repair. The member paid for the repair of the shower we sent a paid receipt. The member should look at what was sent to him.

Baker Elman helped repair a leaky faucet. They were great because it was a European model with non-standard parts and finding the right tool to fix it was a problem. They did not have the tool on hand, but went the extra mile to find one from an automotive company (I know, ridiculous, but not their fault). Great people, great service.

Scheduling an appointment was a no fuss affair. The employee showed up at our home on time, and was polite and professional. The work was neat and clean, and without issues. The price was also lower than we expected. If we ever need other plumbing work, this will be our first choice. We are very pleased with the work and the experience.

I own a condo in Jamaica Plain and after working with several other plumbing companies, settled on Baker Elman as my go to plumbing company for routine issues. I called them in late December because the heat suddenly stopped working. They sent Steve out promptly, who told me that the boiler was working fine, but the thermostat wasn't connected. I asked him to reconnect the thermostat, and also to provide a quote for replacing the boiler, as it was nearing the end of its life anyway, and I'd prefer not to do an emergency boiler replacement. I could see he was having trouble with the thermostat, but he got it back on and told me it was fixed. They emailed a bill the next day for the thermostat fix ($117), which I paid the same day. Several days later I got a call from my tenants telling me that they just returned from their week of vacation and the heat still wasn't working. My husband and I rushed over, and when we looked at the thermostat, there was a loose wire. My husband had brought a toolkit, and quickly fixed the problem. I called Baker Elman to request a refund for the $117 that I paid for work that was not completed properly. They initially offered to just credit it toward future work, but later agreed to refund me. I didn't hear back for a month or two, and called again, and got no response. Called again weeks later, to find out that they thought they emailed me to say that the owner was not okay with giving a full refund, but they would send me a check for half (no email ever arrived). They also asked why I didn't call when we discovered it wasn't working. While normally with plumbing work I would call immediately if I discover the work was not done right, this was an easy fix with a screwdriver, and allowing Baker Elman to fix the problem would have meant letting my tenants sit in a freezing apartment longer than necessary in early January until the plumber could get there, and also having to take a second 90-min round trip there myself to meet him. I would have fixed it myself the first time, but I didn't have a screwdriver with me, and it was worth it to pay to fix it while he was there with tools rather than to drive home and back. The right solution would have been to refund the full $117, not split the difference. Very short-sighted, and the $59 they kept cost them the $10,000 follow-on job that I probably would have hired them for if they had been fair about refunding me for the mistake in the thermostat work. Now I don't trust them to do the right thing if any issues arise.
Description of Work: Attempted (but failed) to reconnect thermostat, and quoted boiler replacement.

On December 29, 2014 the member called out office with no heat in her rental condominium in Jamaica Plain. As she stated in her complaint we promptly sent out our mechanic Steve. The member lives forty five minutes to an hour away from her property. A time was arranged for her to meet us and we were there as planned. The problem was fixed when Steve left and the member was satisfied enough to pay the bill the next day. Our company guarantees any job for one year on parts that we supply and labor for the job. When the member got a call from her tenant saying that the heat was out she should have promptly called our office to inform us that there was still a problem and we would have glad to go back out to her home. Our office is ten to fifteen minutes from her rental property. We can usually make arrangements to get someone out to anyone’s home quickly as we have eight vehicles on the road. In the forty five minutes it took her to drive from her home to the rental property, one of our technicians or David Elman himself would have been able to get there long before the member. We were never given that opportunity. We try very hard to make all customers happy, unfortunately, sometimes it doesn’t work out that way.

The member called our office regarding a leak from the garbage disposal. She was quoted a price for a direct replacement of the unit which she agreed to. The member said there might also be a leak from the drain. The job was scheduled for June 6, 2014 between 9am – 12 noon time. We have G.P.S. in our vehicles and ran a report that shows our mechanic arrived at 9:22 am which was within the time that she was told. When our mechanic diagnosed that the disposal and the drain was leaking, the added charge was for replacing the drain (stock and labor). We billed the member for the work that was done. After several attempts to speak with the member we finally talked on November 28, 2014. The member said she had sent a check out and that we must be holding it for some unknown reason. We explained to her that we wouldn’t be holding it and that this conversation wouldn’t be taking place if we had it. We suggested to the member to call the bank to make sure it wasn’t cashed and if it came into our office we would return it if she sent out another check to us. The member wanted us to pay for a stop payment for the check which of course we would not do. Finally on December 9, 2014 we received payment from the member to pay the bill in full. If the member was so unhappy why didn't she call our office to discuss this instead of waiting a year to post this on Angie's List? We would have been happy to answer any questions or concerns.

They were fantastic on all fronts. I asked for an appointment as early in the day as possible. They promised 8.30 am and came even earlier, which was great. The plumber fixed the faucet. For the sink disposal, I assumed a complete replacement was needed and I had already bought the replacement so it could be installed. The plumber said a full replacement was not necessary, because only one part was malfunctioning. He said the one part could probably be obtained for free since the disposal was still under warranty. He was right, and his advice saved us the cost of the replacement parts and labor - probably about $500 saved! I am really impressed by their professionalism and will definitely call them again next time I need a plumber.

My brother and I are preparing a rental unit and my brother got under the ancient kitchen sink which is soon to be removed and innocently turned a valve, thinking it would shut off the water but instead started quite a leak! Fearing a flood,we immediately called Baker Elman and explained the situation.Within half an hour the Baker Elman van was in the driveway, and Mike immediately went to work on those old brass pipes, stopping the leak and disconnecting the hot and cold water and the drain to facilitate removal of the sink. I can't praise this firm enough,as they are courteous, professional, and as responsive as EMT's! We will definitely be calling them in the future to update the plumbing.

I can't find sufficient words of praise. They came once to assess the situation; it was one they hadn't seen before with an atypical heater with a more atypical set up. They came back with equipment that would allow the welding on the back porch, so there was never a danger of setting off the sprinkler system. (A year ago, a different plumber set off the sprinkler system in a neighbor's unit, flooding the building.) The installation was done carefully and professionally. And even better, all of the staff we dealt with were top notch and seemed to be intelligent and warm people. We've been very happy with Baker-Elman in past. Now we're even happier.

There were a couple of hiccups in the repair but they were happy to repair them and sort them out. They were very punctual.
