He was a little sloppy with painting and his general carpentry was good but he was a little on the expensive side. I don't remember everything about what he did; I'd say that generally, it was good. If I needed handyman services again, I'd probably call him. He was here when he said he would be here. There aren't a lot of handyman around. A lot of people who do this kind of work want to do bigger projects and this was like a 2-day little project. He's more of a high-end handyman.
Description of Work: He did a bunch of odd repairs around the house--some siding repair, he replaced an attic drop ladder, and some other more complicated miscellaneous repairs in the house. It was kind of odd job carpentry.

Hello member, I must say thats a first being called a sloppy painter. Most say I am to meticulous a perfectionist which is probably a downside because it takes longer and costs more for perfection. I also installed your shower and doors where a plumber had failed if I remember correctly, siding patching, priming, attic stairs, etc and a bunch of other repairs. Almost 4 years to the day, I had to review to remember myself, that's probably why "I don't remember everything about what he did; I'd say that generally, it was good". Although if a customer wants less than perfection I certainly try to be less than perfect to save on time and cut costs etc. Id be happy to do more work for you, possibly some painting and or other items you need done. Thanks for taking the time and submitting a report. Bob

Bob is great! He is professional, punctual, neat, gets right to work, picks up materials for the job if you need him to, and the finished results are fantastic. It is expensive to hire a handyman, but Bob is well worth the price. The work Bob does reflects his true professionalism. We will be calling him for future projects.

Overall, Bob is an excellent craftsman and offers a high quality of work in everything he does. He was very easy to work with, communicative, and kept detailed records. He treated my home with the utmost respect and kept an immaculate work space. His rate is fair and comparable to any professional tradesman. Bob takes the time to get things right and certainly takes pride in his work. I have read other reviews that viewed this as a negative trait, but the bottom line is you get what you pay for. With an old house and unexpected damage from a DIY hack job by the previous owner of my home, I definitely understand how frustrating it can be when things start taking more time and money than was initially quoted. But when it comes to certain jobs like this, I believe it is worth the time and money to get it done right by an experienced professional with attention to detail. There was another tile company I had contacted for a quote, and while it was lower than Bob's quote, I would have still had to bring in someone to fix the damage lurking behind the old bathroom before they could tile - or worse, they wouldn't have pointed it out at all and just retiled over the damage causing me more trouble down the line. It was a huge relief that Bob could take care of it all, no matter the issues that popped up. If you have a project that requires a high quality of work and detail, Bob is your guy.
Description of Work: Bob demoed old bathroom tile and reinstalled porcelain tile, including all required plumbing plus extra carpentry due to the damage from the previously botched tile job.

You talk with Bob and Bob comes and does the work. We needed to get a range hood externally vented. We provided Bob with pics of the area where the work needed to be done and he was able to let us know that this fitted within the scope of work he does. He was very easy to communicate with by e-mail and phone and prompt to reply. He showed up on time, assessed the details of the work that needed to be done and discussed different options of what could be done and the rough costs associated with each of them. Bob got the work done on time. He has all the tools and will let you know if he can do the job.

Your report is absurd, more importantly your absurd, obviously its personal. A year, two years later youve finally had the job completed and your unhappy with the results so your projecting your anger at the wrong person. I found you to be a very conflictual person, which I must say is why for the first time in 25 years I withdrew from engaging in a project, for that reason alone. Its just the opposite, which I have the emails to prove. I continually tried to start your project without cooperation. You did supply me with information and photos, although you were unable to communicate. You were very conflictual, lacked the ability, or was it plain ignorance to answer a few SIMPLE QUESTIONS (in addition to what you supplied) which would have lead to the start and completion of your project. I submitted our email correspondence to my account manager at Angies List and was releived of your job. A couple of months went by, your payment for the Big Deal was still there. I went out of my way, contacted you, back and forth with Angies list numerous times, wanted angies list to contact you directly and give you instructions, Pain in the [prfanity removed]- just like this report-your still the same. I personally had given you specific instructions via email to get your payment back, you must have lightened up at that point-you even said thank you. I like working for people who want to see their projects, repairs become a reality and be completed. No thanks, hire someone else to be argumentative with you.

We had a variety of odd jobs that required carpentry skills around the house. He arrived on time, scoped out the work, and got everything done in the time frame he said he would. He also noticed a few additional items that needed fixing (related to the work originally scoped) and got those done as well. He was courteous, punctual, and efficient. I would definitey use him again.

Sorry member your report is ridiculous and obnoxious after reviewing our e-mails correspondence, dates and what we verbally spoke to each other. It sounds it was more personal reasons for a very late slow report. As this work has been done approximately 6 months ago. Your report is very contradicting to our e-mail correspondence, dates, and what we verbally spoke to each other. First off price: you did show concern for the price as you are elderly and stated you are on a fixed budget. I was upfront, honest with you and told you 4 to 6 hours. I completed your work in five, in a cold rain. You asked about a 10% coupon, which I do not know where you got this information as I never offered a 10% coupon. I offered to do better and gave you a discounted rate plus a senior citizen discount and even went lower than you had expected, as I gave u a better hourly rate than what we had agreed upon in our e-mails. Coincidently you mentioned you are on a budget before I came to your property. While there I noticed a beautiful newly installed wrought-iron fence, which obviously has no bearing on anything as I even gave you a better discount. You also had discussed a new brick walkway with stairs, solar window shading, bathroom work, wallpaper work, Roman shades, air conditioner, and paintng. It is a beautiful property and I am sure your husband afforded a great life for yourself and family. As far as responsiveness after reviewing the e-mail correspondence, dates, and what we verbally spoke to each other. My initial contact with you took two days. Over the next 2 to 3 weeks of correspondence between you and I, the longest delay was on your behalf of over four days to respond back to me. I also contacted you at a telephone number you had provided which I still have on your e-mail. I had left a message on your voicemail which you stated you never received and also said that you were happy I was coming. I still have the telephone numbers that you had provided. As far as punctuality after reviewing the e-mail correspondence, dates, and what we verbally spoke to each other. I gave you a date and time that I would be at your home to do the job. That is when I arrived and did your job. I made one stop on the way to pick up materials so I would not have to leave your home. I had called you to let you know I was running a half hour or so late as I was picking up your materials. I hope this recalls your memory and thank you for saying I am compulsively neat and detailed which is the way a professional should be. I beg to differ you with the job taking forever as I can only imagine an amateur doing this job and how long it would have taken also how sloppy the results would be. I was focused, quick and competent, finishing your job one hour less than the high end of my estimate. Please hire someone less professional than me for your future jobs, Possibly I will be back to fix someones mistakes.

Worked quickly and did a great job in the 10 degree wind chill. This is an older house and he had to customize the trim to match the existing section. Excellent job!
Description of Work: Repaired damage to the eaves at the corner of the house.
Bob was terrific from start to finish. It took him about a week to respond to my initial inquiry, but he was the first to respond out of three companies I contacted, so that's still an A for me. He was very good about communicating, letting me know beforehand what his plan was, and giving me an update about how things went as he finished up (the property was vacant, being prepared for a new tenant). The window replacement was an add-on, as I had him look at it when he did the stair job. He recognized the door/window unit on sight, contacted the company and got them to honor a warranty on the window (though it was likely long expired), ordered the window, and replaced it promptly when it was delivered. Overall he did a great job, and I have no complaints about the experience.
Description of Work: Repaired exterior deck stairs, including replacing several broken treads and a stringer/handrail that was falling off. Replaced transom window over sliding door. Replaced door hardware throughout the unit.

This was a small job so I didn't think I would easily find someone to take it on. Bob responded fairly promptly to my first email and has been very responsive ever since we got into conversation about this project. We have a whole house music system with in-wall touch screens in several rooms. The original touch screens were starting to fail and the replacement screens have been downsized meaning that we had holes in our walls that were too big for the new screens we wanted to install. Bob helped us come up with a solution of maple panels large enough to cover the original holes with cut outs for the new screens. He took time to understand the problem, was willing to go the extra mile to make the solution not only effective but also esthetic. He bought the maple, fabricated the panels offsite to precision specs, beveled the edges to improve the look, and returned to install them. During installation, we recognized that nail holes would mar the look of the final product so again Bob came up with an innovative solution that allowed the panels to be firmly fixed to the wall without any visible nail holes. I would use Bob again for handyman work. He is flexible and responsive.

The quality of the work Bob did for us is excellent. The ceiling light makes my daughter's room look great and the walls in her room and my son's room showed meticulous detail in the prep work. It's obvious Bob really cares about the work he does and it shows in the final product. We had trouble finding other contractors through AL that were responsive to our initial contacts. Bob emailed me a couple weeks after our initial contact (thinking we had already found someone else) and when I told him we had not found anyone, he quoted me an hourly rate to do the work we needed. Although we really didn't want to do the work on a T&M basis, since we were on a budget and had a clear idea of what we were willing to pay, we compromised and Bob did some of the work for a lump sum (the ceiling light and closet door repair) and the painting for an hourly rate with a rough estimate of the time he thought it would take. In the end we spent a little more than we wanted to for this project, but it is done and we are satisfied with the work. Not sure how we may use Bob in the future because of our preference for lump sum pricing for projects versus his hourly rate, but you can't argue with the quality of his work. We would recommend him to others without hesitation.

All went well. Bob has done a number of jobs for me, and he always does excellent quality work. He is an excellent carpenter and has construction experience, so knows his way up and down and around the house. Earlier in the summer, he put in some new windows to replace old leaky metal ones, and did a very good job. Helped in selecting a vendor, and then working with the vendor. Bob's rates on the high side, I'd say. In his defense, he works very hard and is skilled at what he does, so I'm always pleased with the results.
Description of Work: He power washed areas of house and walkways to remove algae, repaired rotted side boards around house, repaired gutters and down spouts, painted shingles that were cracking.
(1) Originally, just the window was to be replaced. Once siding was removed, it was discovered that the sheathing and 4 first floor studs had rotted due to a leak around the chimney. All rotted material was removed and replaced with pressure treated wood. All insulation was replaced. Before closing up the wall, other potential causes for the water leakage were investigated and eliminated. (2) Side door was removed and replaced. All trim and sill materials were replaced. (3) Rotted portions were replaced with pressure treated wood. (4) Rotted or worn trim was removed and replaced. Cap over front door was rebuild and sealed. In all cases, Bob cleaned up wasted at the end of every day. House plantings were well protected. All work was performed around my availability to be at home. Prior to closing up any walls, Bob took the time to show me what the problem was and the final repairs. He is a true professional and very particular about any work he performs. We had "less than acceptable" experiences with handyman service providers in the past ... and were not looking forward to having to get involved with one again. Bob, however, has given us renewed faith that there are still some professionals out there. He is a little more expensive than some other handymen that we have used in the past ... but well worth it.
Description of Work: (1) Replaced window and resulting rotted studs (2) Replaced side door to garage (3) Replaced portions of exterior window sills, trim (4) Replaced portions of front door exterior trim

The quality of the work they do is second to none. They are responsive, and they insure they do everything to make sure the customer is completely satisfied. Robert took the initiative to come out the next day to ensure that everything met satisfaction.. I was very satisfied with him coming out to make sure my needs were met.
Description of Work: He fixed the back steps leading up to the deck. He fixed the front porch area where the gutters are , as well as patched the roof where there was a leak.
Both jobs went superbly! The Pella bay window installed about 1997 had developed wood rot in the frame around the 4X4 glass and in the base and needed to be replaced. The outside screened-in porch constructed in 1990 needed an updating, the ceiling was leaking and it needed refinishing on the interior surfaces.. Bob Phalan was very professional and brought a superb work ethic to the repair of both areas. He removed the damaged picture window with rotted areas around it and replaced the window, frame, and sill, painted the interior & exterior, and reinforced the bay window support so that both side windows are now functional. All this was done in two days. The area was kept very clean during this re-construction activity. The second phase of ths project included the repair of the porch roof leak and covering the ceiling and inside surfaces with vinyl siding and rehanging the external sound system speakers. Again his professional demeanor and great personality made it very easy to work with him in designing and his getting the job done most expeditiously and within budget. I would highly recommend him for any home based repair or addition desired!!!
Description of Work: (1) Rreplaced picture window and frame in bay window extension in bedroom and (2) repaired and refinished a 3-season screened porch.
He rebuild my garden shed in the backyard. The shed is absolutely a beautiful piece of work. He is a gifted craftsman. He is very skillful. I was very pleased with the job. Anything he touches turns to beautiful work. I would highly recommend him.
