It was a great experience to work with Shaun. He was on time both for the initial appointments (the projects were separate in time by about a year), spent time to really hear what I wanted the end result to be like, and gave very reasonable estimates. I had one other company come in to give an estimate on the living room project and that company wanted almost double what Shaun was quoting for inferior wood. I didn't even ask anyone else for an estimate on the second project because I was so pleased with Shaun's initial work. Both projects came out beautifully. The work was completed by Shaun himself (with help) and with perfection. Every time someone enters my home for the first time or if they haven't been in a while, I get oohs and ahs over both sets of built-ins. Absolutely beautiful work. And Shaun is 100% professional. I found he is very timely in his email responses (I don't use the phone much, so we were able to communicate quite effectively by email). I would highly recommend Needham Woodworking for any project you have in mind. If you have an idea, Shaun can make it come to life beautifully.
Description of Work: Shaun completed two distinct woodworking/built-in projects for me- one in my living room and one in the dining room. The living room project involved building cabinets and shelves around my fireplace in existing "cut-outs" in my living room. He made them to house my electronics and hide all of the ugly wires and at the same time be able to use everything with the cabinet closed. In the dining room, I had a very specific project in mind, to build a bar/storage with open shelving as well as a window seat to bridge the space underneath the window that would separate the two pieces of the built-in. Shaun helped me design the project and pick finishes.

Shaun came in a gave us a quote for the project. He was not pushy and gave us a few ideas whilst he was here. It ended up being about a year before we asked him to come back and do the work but Shaun was extremely professional throughout and made a number of suggestions for changes to what we originally put forward that we ended liking better! It was great to have someone sanity check what we were asking for. Shaun came in an did the work whilst we were on vacation and we could not be more happy with what we saw when we returned. The workmanship was of the highest quality and there was no mess in he house! Shaun also managed to solve a couple of difficult problems e.g. curved crown molding and made it look easy! I would highly recommend Shaun for any projects that you have!

They were fantastic and we would definitely use them again. Shaun returned my call the same day and came to our house that Saturday to give an estimate. He listens to what you are looking for, is helpful in offering suggestions, and was able to show us potential designs o. His laptop while he was at our house. He was very realistic about the timeframe in which we would receive our pieces. They do great work - the custom furniture looks great and we love our built-ins. Shaun was able to match the cabinet below our tv and now the whole unit looks like it was always there. Since both my husband and I work, it was really helpful to be able to communicate with Shaun via email. We would highly recommend Needham Woodworking!
Description of Work: We used them for several projects - custom furniture (desk and large sideboard) built-in shelving unit, built-in shelving unit around tv and a large custom made bulliten board.

Everything went very well. Shaun responded very promptly when I asked for an estimate and came out to the house to measure and work through a design with me. He told me up front that he was very busy and would not be able to install the cabinet for several months, but I was not in a hurry. He gave me an estimate in the late spring and said he could install in the early fall. He got back in touch with me at the end of the summer and we scheduled a date. He and his assistant arrived on time and finished in just a few hours. They were very courteous and professional, and careful to protect the floors where they had to move in and out from their truck to the dining room. I had a small issue with the final cabinet that I did not notice until after they left and Shaun's assistant came back the following week to take care of it. They used very high quality materials and took time and effort to make sure the cabinet really fit into the room. They added small baseboard panels to blend with the current baseboards and even asked for leftover trim paint from the room so they could paint the new trim to match. The size, shape and style of the cabinet blends into the room as if it had always been there. The cabinet came out very nicely and the work looks very professional. Shaun is a pleasure to work with and is very accommodating and very responsive. Overall I was very pleased with the experience and would hire him again.
Description of Work: We wanted to have a china cabinet built in our dining room where a space for one had already been built into the room. The cabinet is floor to ceiling, about 3 1/2 - 4 feet wide, with drawers below, a hip level open counter, and a cabinet with shelves and glass doors above. I put N/A for the price because we did not get any other estimates so I have nothing to compare. It was in the ballpark of what I expected. The only other cabinet maker we contacted never came back with an estimate.

Great! After the measurement and 3d rendering took place. Shaun emailed me a detailed quote and time frame for installation. The day of installation Shaun and his colleague promptly arrived on time and installed the cabinet/bookcase in one day. They built most of it off site so the installation is very quick. They even painted the bookcase/cabinet to match our trim. I just gave him the paint code and they painted it offsite. Very happy with the final product.
Description of Work: Hired Needham Woodworking to build a bookcase and cabinet. I am very pleased with the finished product. Shaun was very professional and punctual. He came out and measured then quickly produced a 3d rendering of what the bookcase would look like. They are certainly busy so expect a bit of time before the install takes place. But that's just because they produce a quality product. I am very pleased with the built in. The quality and craftsmanship is excellent. I would definitely recommend giving a try and I will certainly use them again in the future.

Needham Woodworking truly deserves A+ ratings in all categories. My husband and I are SO pleased with our experience from start to finish. Shaun and team were great to work with and produced some absolutely beautiful cabinetry of the highest quality. We can tell that they are craftsmen who are proud of their work. What is more impressive is that they were the lowest quote we received by far. The price was absolutely right for the value of service and product that they provided. Shaun came by for an quote and was able to provide a design and a price on the spot. He gave us a realistic timeframe for installation and while we were waiting for the custom living room cabinet we called back and asked to increase the scope of work to add custom cabinet doors onto an existing built-in shelving unit. Shaun came by for another quote on the doors and then was able to execute the additional work also within the original time estimate. In fact, all the projects were installed BEFORE the estimate that Shaun had originally given. We were also impressed by their integrity. Something was slightly off in one of the measurements and the baseboard of the new built-in cabinet didn't match the baseboard of the adjoining wall. Fixing it required redoing not only the baseboard but also two doors. Without question, Shaun's team made the adjustments and the new baseboard and doors were in THE NEXT DAY. I am sure mistakes aren't typical but we were glad they stood behind their product and fixed things quickly. We will recommend Needham Woodworking to our friends and family and most certainly use them again in the future.

I'm not sure where to start with the positive adjectives to describe our experience. Shaun was an excellent partner: reliable, even tempered, pleasant to deal with. The proposed price was fair and the finished product was exactly as promised at the agreed price. The workmanship and attention to detail was outstanding. The consultative approach to design at the front end contributed to three prominent additions to our townhouse that we are very proud to have.
Description of Work: We worked with Shaun and his staff at Needham Woodworking over a six-month period to design, build and install a built-in banquette in our breakfast room, a large entertainment center customized for the space and the contents in our living room, and a new floor-to-ceiling bookshelf-lined wall with center doorway to split a large loft space into two more functional rooms.

The day of delivery, Shaun came by with a member of his staff. The cabinets were unloaded one at a time and final preparations olf the space and the walls were accomplished without a hitch. Shaun determined that the floor was more unlevel than he anticipated, so installation was a bit more awkward to ensure that all cabinets lined up and that the aesthetics were as pleasing to the eye as he intended. To accomplish this feat, additional molding and "shoring up" was necessary, which they accomplished without much difficulty ....and to my surprise, without any additional expense. After installation, they cleaned up both the site of installation, and the garage which they used as a staging area, demonstrated the final project and left. Both Shaun and his coworker were very polite happy to have the company of the cusomer (me).
Description of Work: Shaun from Needham Woodworking (NW) came out and measured the space in which we wished to have cabinets build. Using an established computer design program, he presented several design options before leaving our home, but finalized the design via internet, then waited (patiently) until we made our final decision....and it took a couple of months before we were ready to commit. When we were ready to do so, he returned to our home to recheck his measurements and gave us a realistic delivery date that coincided with my vacation schedule....since as a teacher, it was difficult for me to be home for the delivery. The final product was installed within the time projected, with no mess. Additional materials were needed to provide a visually pleasing product, but no further expense was passed along to us at the installation. All in all, time alloted for this project, and the installation went without incidence. Both my wife and I are very happy witht the resulting cabinets and how much they improve the appearance of our basement. We are happy with NW's choices of hardware and design, and would recommend this company to friends and family in the future.

My wife and I were in need of a new entertainment center to accomodate a new 60" flatscreen TV upgrade. After searching several furniture stores we could not find a unit which would fit our needs and decided to look into a custom built in unit. Needham Woodworking came up in a google search as one of three credible companies able to do the job requested. All three responded with similar designs/ideas on a corner unit with storage and bookcase highlights but NW had a complete and total package. One company would not stain the unit and had no home theater experience while the other quoted and astronomical price and conversed with an endless stream of emails. Owner Shawn Ritter personally came to the house took measurements, swapped ideas, had product samples and a history portfolio. He was open to changes and suggestions. We agreed on a design and given a timetable of approximately four months. The price included material, construction, stain, lacquer, accessories and installation. The only negative (if you can call it that) was the devilery date. Shawn explained that he was having some trouble matching the stain on the countertop to the veneers on the rest of the unit and it was taking repeated sanding and staining sessions to get a match. One month later Shawn and Tim arrived with a beautiful piece of custom furniture. The stain was uniform and a perfect match! Each section was wrapped in moving blanket to avoid scratching. The floor in the living room was also covered in blankets to avoid damage. They spent approximately eight hours installing four cabinet sections, doors, shelving, solid countertop and trim. The only hiccup in assembly was he was approximately one foot short in crown moulding and would have to come back the following week to finish. They incorporated rope accent lighting and puck style accent spotlights for the two bookcases. They were able to move outlets to give consideration to the AV units that would be installed. They considered ventilation to prevent overheating of electronics. They positioned the subwoofer behind the unit so it won't be seen and were professional in providing access for future wiring. They removed the baseboard and butted the unit flat against the wall. They further trimmed the baseboard flush on either end of the unit to keep the room uniform. The room was vacuumed upon completion and they unit wiped down. All scrap was taken with them. The following week when he returned to finish the trim Shawn suggested a sensor which would allow us to turn all the components on withourt having to open the doors. He was also able to install this item! Overall, this was an exceptional choice in style, design, function and contractor. We get compliments from everyone. My wife was a little surprised with how red the mahogony stain initially looked, however, we find with the changing light in this wide open room, the stain tends to change the color. The soft close hinges are a nice addition and prevents the slamming of doors by the kids getting their games. There is no particle board or cheap materials in its construction. Needham Woodworking has no hidden charges in their quoted price. Everything, materials, labor, fixtures, stain, laquer, design and labor was included in the price. This is a one of a kind piece of custom furniture we intend to enjoy for a long time. We would use Shawn Ritter and his team again for future projects. My only suggestion would be to have an emblem proclaiming 'Made in the USA'.
Description of Work: Needham Woodworking designed, built and installed a custom built in media/entertainment center to accomodate a 60" flatscreen TV complete with accent lighting, cabinets for storage and bookcase measuring in total approximately 12' long, 7' high and almost 2' wide. It was designed and installed as a corner unit. It has crown molding, solid maple countertop, soft close hinges, two glass shelf accessories and stained in mahogany with a clear lacquer finish. There is no particle board used in its construction. The price included installation. Needham Woodworking also removed a light sconce and incorporated the wiring to accomodated rope accent lighting and puck style accent lights for the bookshelves. They further advised and helped with running wire for the home theater system as well as install a sensor for a remote which allows us to work the A/V components without having to open the cabinet doors.

We needed a built-in storage/display unit for 1,000's of vinyl records, stereo system and tv and we called Needham Woodworking for an estimate since they had done a beautiful job on some built-ins at my sister's place. Shaun came to our house to see the room where we wanted the unit and asked us questions about what our hopes were. After talking for a little bit, Shaun worked on his computer and came up with two designs along with estimates. We were able to see what the finished unit would look like and what different options would cost. It was a challenging project because the wall where the unit would be built has baseboard heating that could not be removed, so Shaun and his crew had to build around the baseboard and at the same time make sure to protect the records from the heat. Shaun was also able to advise us on how to best integrate all of our electronics so that tv, stereo, iPod, blue ray, etc., all worked with one remote and through the speakers in multiple rooms. Once we agreed on one of the great design ideas Shaun showed us and on the cost, Shaun and his crew built the unit in their workshop. Then they came to the house, installed the unit, and coordinated the sound system. All of the workers were knowledgeable, polite, hardworking (they barely stopped for lunch), and meticulous about the details. We are thrilled with the finished product and would highly recommend Needham Woodworking. Everything about their work was outstanding and they were very easy to deal with. Very nice and talented guys.
Description of Work: Needham Woodworking built a large built-in wooden entertainment unit with base cabinets and shelves. The unit had to be very sturdy in order to hold 1,000's of vinyl records as well as all stereo and tv equipment, and it had to be built around baseboard heat. They also integrated all of our electronics so that tv, stereo, iPod, etc. played through the sound system and worked with one remote. Furthermore, they built an easy glide shelf in one cabinet so that the turntable could be easily pulled out and records would not skip when the shelf moved.

We could not be more pleased with all the services and work done by Shaun Ritter and his crew. They were responsive, flexible, and always on time at the work site. In addition, they cleaned up after themselves! The quality of construction and finishes of the cabnets provided by Needham Woodworking are top notch. In summary, if we ever need quality cabinets - for anything - built again, Needham Woodworking will be our first call.
Description of Work: This was a major remodeling of a small kitchen in a Back Bay condo - essentially a gut rehab. Shaun and his crew added some very nice innovations to our preliminary design that made excellent use of the available space. The project included six base cabinets, eight upper cabinets (two with glass panes and shelves), and a tall cabinet for the refrigerator. In addition, wood panels were made for and installed on the dishwasher and refrigerator. Needham Woodworking provided the fully documented design; guidance with trims, moldings, and finishes; construction (plywood - NO particleboard!!); delivery, and installation.

Shaun is absolutely amazing, as is his team. I interviewed MANY carpenters and AV installers, and Needham Woodworking differentiated itself from the beginning. Shaun is extremely articulate and responsive – and communicates effectively by both phone and e-mail. He also had the most creative solutions to the problems I was able to solve. He: * Helped us select the cabinet doors that would blend best with the look of our home (correctly steering us away from an overly complicated design that others had endorsed). * Built cabinets around floor heaters that masked the visual problem posed by the heaters while letting the heat escape. * Blended in the built-in bookcases in with the décor of our room by adding a hand-painted coat in addition to the spray painted coat. Brought two samples and changed both technique and paint color midstream to ensure that the bookcase finish would blend well with our room. * Suggested a site where we could find a broad range of cabinet knobs and provided thoughts on the choice of cabinet knobs. * Identified the two pieces of molding that could be connected together to a) look nice, and b) sit as close as possible to the wall while still masking a below-ceiling electronic screen. * Installed the molding in an extremely innovative way that would allow us to a) skip hiring a small guy to crawl through the ceiling cavity to help install it, and b) reach the electronic screens for repairs without having to break the molding or get a guy in the ceiling to unbolt it. * Recommended the best way to install the video projector that’s hidden above the kitchen cabinets and pokes through to the living room. * Adjusted the projector mount to match the image to the screen post-installation. Shaun is not only talented, hardworking, and an excellent entrepreneur. He’s the only contractor I’ve ever given keys and trusted to handle a job while I was out of town. Enough said.
Description of Work: Our job involved the design and installation of custom cabinets on both sides of the fireplace, as well as assistance with the installation of a video projector and molding to cover the associated electronic screen.

We were referred to Shaun Ritter and Needham Woodworking by a friend, and it turned out to be a very helpful recommendation. I gave Shaun a call on a Friday to discuss our potential project and he was able to come meet at my apartment in Boston that Monday, after our meeting he was able to provide a written quote and sketch of the project in 2 days. During our meeting Shaun showed a great design eye and asked several questions on the goals of our project, as I gave him more information I learned that Shaun also does TV and Audio installations so instead of having to use someone else to coordinate and install a TV/Audio with cabinets we ended up using Shaun for the entire process. One really interesting idea Shaun had in designing our project was because of the height of our mantle the TV was already at a point where we preferred it not to be any higher but thought a soundbar would be the best option for the sound component. Shaun came up with the great idea of building the speakers into the fireplace and thus saving space and making for an even cleaner look. In addition Shaun was very cost conscious he provided a list and his cost of different electronic components we would need and then gave us the option that he could provide or if I could find them cheaper we could just buy them ourselves. So I was able to buy most components on amazon myself for lower cost and save money along the way. Installation--Shaun had budgeted 4 days to install the project and was able to finish in 3. I highly recommend both him and needham woodworking. See the results for yourself in the picture below.
Description of Work: We initially contacted Shaun to construct some built-in cabinets to place our AV equipment and to enlarge the mantle around our fireplace. After our meeting we hired him for both cabinet-making, fireplace mantle and for installation of our tv/audio.

Excellent experience with these guys. Very professional and pleasant. They started with very careful measurements and design of the shelving, with my input on the style and color wanted. Afterwards, they emailed me a sketch of the design for approval. All the shelving was built and painted at their shop over the next few weeks, and then installed in our home. Again, very careful and detail-oriented in the installation, and the end result is beautiful. They also readily returned a couple times for a few touch-ups to the paint. Overall, great quality work and customer service, at a fair price.
Description of Work: Needham Woodworking made custom, built-in bookshelves for our living room. Included area to fit a large flat screen tv. They also installed a wall bracket and mounted the television; installed infrared sensors to allow or audio-video components to be operated through cabinet doors. Installed small recessed ceiling lights in front of shelves.

Sean was very responsive to our needs and budget constraints. The quality of the work was excellent (use of hardwoods and paint to match our molding) and the installation process was very thorough. We are very pleased with the product and would not hesitate to recommend Sean and his team.
Description of Work: Sean and his team designed, built, and installed custom bookshelves and cabinetry for our study.

Shaun was great from the start. He was flexible with scheduling the estimate and showed up on a Saturday to do it. He gave us some great tips on how to make the cabinet look good and fit into our small space. We negotiated the price and the final cost was equal to the estimate. He was flexible with the install dates and agreed to work on the weekend. He and his team showed up on time and were very courteous and cleaned up after themselves. Shaun has a busy schedule so I recommend calling early but they do excellent work. I would absolutely call them again.
Description of Work: Shaun and his team designed, built, and installed a custom corner cabinet for our dining room and also re-routed cable lines and power and mounted a wall mount TV.
