I was very pleased with DM Storrs from start to finish. Alexandra was quick to return my call and schedule Brad to come out to assess the problem and give me an estimate. Once I decided to have the work done, Alexandra scheduled the date and a rain date. That proved to be a good thing since it poured on the original date. Brad arrived on time and completed the work within the time he had told me it would take. No mess and the repair seems to have resolved the problem of water coming in through/around the chimney. Very pleasant experience!
Description of Work: Applied water repellent to the chimney and sealed all flashing seams. Also installed stainless steel raincaps.

Our house has two fireplaces, neither (as of a week ago) safely functional. We got a quote from Storrs back in December, but weren't able to afford to do the work until now. Dana Storrs met with my wife to discuss the quote, and he was very friendly and clear, and presented us several options for how to proceed - sort of an a la carte list with prices. (We wanted our main fireplace to be functional, but the bedroom fireplace needed to be basically sealed, at least for the time being.) Even though we couldn't get Dana in to do the work until five months after he prepared the bid, he honored the original quote. He and his assistant, John, were on time (or within a half hour - he'd said "9am, traffic permitting," and traffic was rough, so I don't ding him for being a little late). We talked through which options seemed to work best for us, and they got right to work. First he installed a new chimney liner in our three story chimney. While doing mostly cosmetic work to our second floor fireplace, he found that the house - built in 1886 - had some unsafe structural issues with the fireplace that could have led to a fire. (Basically, the wall unsafely intersected the chimney itself.) Dana had to open up the wall next to that fireplace (probably a 12" x 12" hole) - a hole we weren't anticipating - but he was able to repair the inner-wall brickwork to make everything safe. And he didn't charge us a penny for that unanticipated work. We told Dana that we were going to put a marble surround on the bedroom fireplace after he left. He asked how thick it needed to be, and then re-faced the fireplace to allow for the new surround to be installed with minimum adjustments to the overlaid mantel. (He was re-facing the fireplace anyway, as the original bricks need to be repointed.) He also removed the old hearth in front of the fireplace so we could install a new marble hearth as well. And he didn't charge us anything for that work. He removed an old ugly brass and glass (think 1980) cover from the downstairs fireplace, and cleaned the soot off of the tiles that had been covered by the brass cover. The back of the fireplace liner (was it iron or steel? I wasn't sure - I think it was iron) had cracked at some point, and Dana managed to remove the back part without damaging the original iron sides. He then put new fire bricks where the old broken back liner had been. It looks amazing -- and now it's safe. He also installed a new damper system that seals the chimney from the top -- much nicer than the old kind of system I'm used to that you closed from the fireplace itself, and it never really sealed so you had to stuff newspapers in there to keep out the draft. You know what I'm talking about. He originally held a few days over the course of two weeks to do the work, but he started Monday morning and was completely done mid-afternoon on Wednesday of the same week. Oh -- and even though he had done a lot of extra work at no charge (the unanticipated repair inside the wall in the second floor, and the removal of the original hearth from the floor), he still LOWERED the amount of our original quote because he had overestimated the amount of roof scaffolding that he'd need. Yes, our actual invoice was lower than our original quote - because of something that we'd never have known about had he not offered. We love these guys. I actually wish we had more fireplaces and chimneys to restore!

They came at the scheduled time. They did a very thorough inspection of my chimney (from the basement and on top of my roof), the flue, and also the pipe connecting the furnace to the chimney. They also looked at my fireplace and inspected that when I asked a question. Very professional inspection performed by the crew. They explained a lot about my chimney & flue and ultimately told me I did not require any work for my chimney or flue - and that it was in fact, in good condition. This comes on the heels of 2 bad experiences with 2 other chimney companies: (1) I had previously had my chimney swept by a different company offering a special cleaning deal. The special included a very quick cleaning followed by a very brief inspection and then the high pressured sales presentation of the new flue liner I needed to purchase immediately to prevent immenent damage. I resisted the sales pitch and called a few other chimney companies for estimates. The second comapny (#2) came and after performing a quick inspection also told me I had to have everything replaced immediately - also a high- pressured sales picth without giving me much information. Finally I called DM Storrs, and when they came I got the most thorough inspection. When they were finished they explained to me everything about my chimeny, flue & fireplace and said that I do not require any work. If I ever do need work done on my chimney this is the first company I would call.
Description of Work: Performed a very thorough inspection of my chimney & flue (free of charge!). Gave me an inspection report and discussed the findings with me.

Although I didn't use this provider I was impressed that they responded to my request quickly.
Description of Work: This was a request to replace a pipe on a wood stove.
This was the second company we called to inspect our chimney and fireplace to make sure we were ok to use it (we just bought our house and didn't want to take any chances). The first company spent very little time, didn't even get up on the roof to look at the flues/chimney from above, charged us an arm and a leg to vaccuum one flue, and then quoted us an exorbitant amount to "replace 2 out of the 3 flues", which was apparently an "immediate need". This didn't even include masonry, which the first company claimed they don't do. So, we called DM Storrs for a second opinion. They were professional and helpful. They got out ladders and actually inspected the chimney from top to bottom. They cleaned our woodburning flue and charged much less for that than the first company. They told us that our main oil flue was worn, but perfectly ok to use for at least a few more years. They inspected our woodburning flue and said they'd suggest extending the liner but that it was acceptable to use. They quote they gave us was half the cost of the first company and they didn't use scare tactics. They also do their own masonry work, which not all chimney sweep companies seem to do, which seems kinda crazy since they are so intertwined! They were also able to give us an estimate to repoint our chimney, which we know we need to do in the next 1-2 years. The quote they gave us for both the flues and the chimney were still less than the first company estimated for just the flues! If you want a professional and ethical chimney company, you should choose DM Storrs.
Description of Work: Inspected our chimney, fireplace insert and three flues in our new home, cleaned woodburning flue and provided repair/maintenance estimates.

They installed a stainless steel flue liner and cap for my new oil fueled boiler. Their assessment was the most thorough I received, and they identified some other issues that they included in their proposal. They confirmed the service date, showed up on time, were professional and polite, and did the work quickly. All good so far.

Bradley, our sweeper, was really professional. Arrived on time, and since I am a wood stove newbie, he explained in detail how to start a fire in both the wood stove and our regular fireplace. He told me how to replace the gaskets on the doors of the wood stove, and gave me a quote for about how much that would cost if he did it. He asked good questions and spent a long time explaining how things worked. We have two flues, and he was super honest and let us know that the second flue looked unused and clean, so didn't need to be swept (we just bought the house, so we wanted to make sure everything was in order). He was super honest and super efficient. I really appreciated the work. They even sealed the flue to the wood stove better, thinking that it looked somewhat loose. Just went above and beyond, and I'd recommend every time. Very much appreciated! Thanks for excellent and honest service!

Brad and Alexandra at DM Storrs were awesome! We had a lot of problems dealing with the prospective buyers. They had an inspection report from someone else that wanted to do half the work for $1,000 more! Brad inspected the chimney and recommended more work for the lower price. We went back and forth with the buyers for at least 5 proposals, as the buyers did not understand that they were getting more than they asked for. Brad patiently worked with us every step of the way and Alexandra kept cheerfully revising the proposals. (Before they even asked for any money!) The proposal accepted was more than DM Storrs original proposal, but still far less than the buyer's inspector. When all that was done and the final proposal accepted, Brad set up a date well within our time frame for our closing. He arrived as promised and the chimney looks beautiful. All elements needed to please the buyer were done perfectly. If you didn't look up, you never would know they were there - no sign of debris anywhere. Very high quality work and professional, yet personal service.

The guys were fantastic, thorough, punctual and knowledgeable. Instead of paying $2500-$3000 for a chimney we did not need, we paid a service fee of $59. I would recommend them and will definitely use them next time I need my fireplaces checked.
Description of Work: Check to see if we had a chimney liner. Another company had come out to clean the fireplace and said we needed one to the tune of $2,500-$3,000. We wanted a second opinion. DM Storrs told us we HAD a chimney liner and did not need another! He went up on the roof to confirm. He also looked at the fireplace in my bedroom and said we could use it. Another company had said we could not without $200+ in repairs.

DM Storrs has been one of the finest and most professional contractors I've worked with. When I told them I was under a time constraint with a pending house sale, they came out right away and gave me a very reasonable quote and worked with me for a timely installation. Both issues were "safety" issues that would have help up the sale. They followed up with me to make sure all was correct and were responsive to all of my needs. When the buyer wanted additional work done, they came out right away and took care of the work. The work they did was outstanding and my house sale went off without a hitch thanks to DM Storrs.

It went great. Brad and Melissa were knowledgable and professional. I had a non Angies list chimney company do work for me for many years. From the inspection it was apparent that the prior company did not do a thorough job. Further they charged me for unnecessary work (cleaning of my gas flue) Brad spent a good amount of time making sure my chimney was clean and safe. DM Storrs is my new chimney service. They are trustworthy and reasonably priced. Try them!

It went great. I had an inspection done by another company which listed a bunch of work that needed to be done. DM Storrs spent a really long time (up in ladders) verifying the findings. To my surprise, they found that much of the very expensive work that was recommended by another was not necessary. To me, this attests to the integrety of this company. For that alone, DM Storr has my business forever. On top of that, they did a GREAT job on the work that they did, they were lovely to have in the house and they spent time showing me how to optimally use my fireplace. In addition, their prices were very competitive. I cannot recommend DM Storr enough. THANK YOU!

Very professional and prompt. Helped perform a job that plumbers and other were turning down.
I wanted to have chimney repaired before my from out of town family was due to arrive. Brad, from DM Storrs, was willing to work on Saturday, his day off, to accommodate us. Unfortunately, it rained that day so he came back on 7/11 and set up staging and repaired an opening in my fireplace which had eroded. We again had rain, so he came back the following Monday, 7/15. He arrived on time, got right to work, completed the job, put a rain cap at the top, removed the staging and left everything clean and beautiful. He did all this all in temperatures above 90 degrees and did a great job. We are very happy with the finished product and would definitely recommend this company again. Alexandra, who works at the office, was also a pleasure to work with. Brad had a new intern with him who was also very nice. Thanks Angie, for helping us to find a reputable company.
Description of Work: Erected tower of staging on roof. Removed and replaced several bricks at top portion of chimney. Removed and re-laid top portion of chimney, poured new crown. Removed and replaced brick on shoulder area. Grinded pointed various areas of chimney. Installed 17" x 25" x10" H stainless steel rain cap.

After Dana came out to inspect we had his company come and clean our flues and replace brick liners in our wood burning stove from 1978. Two employees came and cleaned the flue and replaced the broken brick liners in our wood burning stove. Good experience overall.
Description of Work: Dana came out to inspect our fireplaces, wood burning stove and recommended cleaning two flues and repairing our wood burning stove. He also recommended tuck pointing some parts of our chimney, lining our flue for our wood burning stove, adding chimney caps and reflashing around two chimneys were squirrels had been eating the lead flashing. He found a dead animal in one of our flues and removed it in specular clean manner. Dana spent a lot of time explaining and teaching me about our fireplaces. I was impressed with his thoroughness and detail. Inspection and quote was very detailed and came on time. To do all he recommended was quite expensive so we opted to do cleaning and repair and plan to do more in the future. Lining the chimney for the wood burning stove was $2K which is much more than expected. Other chimney companies I called didn't show up, didn't return my calls and were very flaky....but not DM Storrs. I called and spoke to his office person a couple times and she was polite and helpful.

The service they provided was great - from the cheerful and efficient woman who answered the phone to the gentlemen who came to clean the chimney. I was told that they would call me from the appointment before mine to let me know when they would arrive and they did. It turned out they were ahead of schedule which was great, so they arrived sooner than expected. They came in and asked me what I needed to have done, assessed the job and got right to work. They were quick and very neat, moving some small pieces of furniture and spreading drop cloths on my carpets, and before I knew it they were done. The technician asked me how often I used the fireplace and recommended that due to relatively infrequent use I could wait for three years before having it cleaned again. I wouldn't hesitate to use this company again. They did a great job!

I contacted DM Storrs through Angies List about them doing an estimate for replacing the chimney liner on my chimney for my furnace. I also wanted them to put a chimney cap on my fireplace chimney. During the whole process the people I interacted with were friendly and helpful and knowledgeable. The work was done on time and done well. Not only that they cleaned up after themselves so you wouldn't know they were there except for seeing the gleaming chimney caps on the roof! I will definitely use them in the future for other projects.

I had called other Chimney Sweeps and thought the prices quite UN-reasonable for re-installing the cap and to clean the chimney. DM Storrs came out and gave me an estimate. The owner looked at the Cap that had blown off and told me it was a fine cap with a lot more life in it. There was no need to buy a new one. He fixed and adjusted the cap, re-installed it and inspected two flues. He determined one flue (the Fire Place) was in need of a cleaning and the other flue (boiler flue) was fine and behaving well. The re-installed flue came with a guarantee that if it ever came off again he would re-install it for free. I very much doubt that the Cap will ever visit the ground again. The folks on the phone and the folks who did the actual work were knowledgeable, friendly, courteous and professional. I look forward to using DM STorrs in the future..
