The worst contracted job EVER. Sloppy, untrustworthy, terrible job - didn't know what they were doing. took 1 year to paint the house - messed up the job 3x and had to start over. Absolute joke.

Summary: If you don't have unlimited budget and time, Tom Curren does not want to talk to you. We were interested in Tom Curren for our two unit condo exterior paint job and request for an quote estimate. An agent came for an assessment early morning. He stressed on the perfection of Tom Curren and the meticulous care they put into provide customers with the best recommendation. After assessment, I asked when could I expect a quote. He said he will bring paint sample in for us to choose and he wants all condo owners to be present for another meeting with him to go over paint color, samples, and process. He stressed that he will provide us with a quote only if we schedule that second meeting with him because "it takes a long time and effort to prepare a quote." I asked for a ball park range and he still refused. After I insisted on knowing a ball park range just so I can report back to other condo owner before setting up the second meeting, he relented and promised to call me back for range. Obviously, he never call back with an estimate. UPDATE: the agent actually called back to apologize, but the conversation quickly turned into him questioning the honesty of my review. I will never work with this company again.

The project went smoothly. Tom Curren provided excellent customer service. The project manager , Eli, was professional with attention to detail. Jean Schneider, our representative was joy to work with. She was able to trouble shoot and provided us with great advice. She was so positive and helpful. Not satisfied, made mistakes, disorganized; used them before several times for misc and large jobs. Most of the time was an okay job, other times not very good. I keep thinking that the next time they will do better - but not the case. Not very knowledgeable, even though they say so.

Tom Curren Company was terrible. We had a kitchen and bath remodel done and there were numerous problems, including incorrectly ordered or installed parts which were not fixed or replaced after we requested their improvement. They gave us a discount on the work for the issues, but it was less than the cost to fix them from a 3rd party. The project was scheduled for 1.5 months and ended up being closer to 4, the kitchen was unusable for ~2 months. 4 months after finishing and the seams around the cabinets are opening up and doors are crooked or coming loose. Tom Curren is a painting company and for that type of work they do a decent job, for anything else they are completely incompetent.

Horrible. We didnt go with Tom Curren because we never received a formal quote and they did not seem interested in our business. scheduling was good/easy but that was it. It was clear from the moment that Tom curren's estimator, Ernie, came that he did not have much interest in our business unless we wanted to completely replace our wood deck with composite. He ball parked the average price for composite decking at 15k. It's as if we were wasting his time even asking for a quote to replace the boards with wood. Next time if you don't need the work, dont waste the potential customers time. We had just started getting quotes for replacing the wood boards and didn't have a good idea of what exactly needed to be done and what the cost would be. Ernie had the nerve to ask me my budget and it wasn't because he was trying to help me out. I said 2k because it was none of his business what my budget was. That's an incredibly unprofessional question to ask someone. Why would I tell him my budget???? He was condescending and the whole visit left me very annoyed. He also said he would get in touch to discuss price but we never heard back. We are getting our deck repaired by someone else and for a much more reasonable price than 15k.

We are always appreciative when we receive feedback from current and potential customers, as it helps us evaluate our performance and customer service. We endeavor for each client to be satisfied with their experience with our company from start to finish, whether they decide to do business with us or not. When this is not the case, it is always an opportunity to evaluate if we could have done anything different to avoid this unpleasant experience, and how we might be able to avoid it from happening again in the future. However, we also understand that despite our best efforts, not every customer will be satisfied with Tom Curren Companies' process. Typically, our estimators take the time to sit down with each customer for an initial consultation to discuss their project needs. Then, usually a follow-up appointment is scheduled, when the estimator will deliver and review the quote with the customer. One important question that comes up during the initial meeting is how much a customer has available or is willing to spend on their project. This helps our estimators determine if we will be able to accommodate the customer's needs, and provides a framework for which they can develop a quote that includes materials and other factors (size of the project, etc.) within their budget. However, it may be decided at the estimator's discretion that a project may not be a good fit for our company, for various reasons. If, for example, a customer gives a budget that does not cover what they are looking to have done, it would not be in the best interest of the company or the client to schedule a follow-up appointment to deliver a quote. In this particular instance, the estimator who met with this client is a licensed CSL carpenter, who took a thorough look at the deck and determined the best solution would be to replace it entirely, due to safety reasons. Our estimators seek to make the best recommendations for each individual client, factoring in budget, safety, and longevity. It was communicated to the customer at the initial meeting that this would not be a project that Tom Curren Companies would be able to take on, and therefore a quote was not delivered. Again, we appreciate any feedback we receive, and take every review as an opportunity to evaluate our performance. We believe it's this diligence and dedication to excellence and customer service that has earned us recognition in a variety of platforms, such as Angie's List Super Service Awards, Best of Houzz Awards, and Company of the Year through [Redacted]. We see each review as an opportunity to improve upon this even more, so once again, we appreciate your feedback. Sincerely, Tom Curren Companies

Fortunately, it didn't "go." I found out about this company before I had written a check and it was too late. It was a classic bait-and-switch. The estimator came out to view my condo. At first, I was impressed that she took a lot of time to take notes, go through the unit, and offer recommendations, but I was suspicious that she kept trying to steer me toward doing more work with her company than I was prepared to. She represented the company as primarily a contractor but also tried to discourage me from buying my own kitchen cabinetry as a way to sell me the materials and pocket the profit. However, when I made it clear that I was purchasing my own materials and asked if they were interested in acting as the contractor for the other projects beside the kitchen, she said that she was and engaged me in a two-week email correspondence supposedly leading to an estimate. She even had me email an estimate from a competitor, supposedly so that she could provide a competitive bid. But the day before she was scheduled to visit, I received an email to cancel the visit, explaining that they were a "soup to nuts" business. That would have been fine if she had represented the business that way from the beginning. Instead, she inexplicably strung me along, possibly to extract information from competitors or try and pressure me into buying materials from their company. I emailed her to ask why she agreed to make a bid on the contract work only if they only work with customers who buy their materials. No reply. I called the managing director of the company to relay the interaction. She sounded interested and assured me that she would call me back the next day after investigating. After leaving a half-dozen messages to try and follow up, I finally gave up. In retrospect, I am relieved that I found out how this company really conducts itself before investing a large sum in a significant project. I hope readers will benefit from my experience and avoid this unprofessional, disreputable business.

Response from Tom Curren Companies
Tom Curren Companies appreciates any feedback it receives from its customers, and we strive for them to be satisfied in every interaction with our company. While we understand this may not always be the case, we are certainly disappointed to hear when a customer has an unsatisfactory experience, as excellence and customer satisfaction are our standard. One of our Remodeling Consultants met with this client for two hours in an initial consultation to discuss his kitchen remodel plans. A follow-up appointment had been scheduled for the following week, where a quote would be delivered to the client. However, after several email communications with the client, it was decided that this particular project would not be a good fit for our company. Tom Curren Companies prides itself on being a full-service remodeling company that handles every aspect of the job from planning to completion. When you work with Tom Curren Companies, you can expect clear communication, timeliness, organization, and exceptional quality--from helping with design and material selection, to construction and project management. Based on this client's needs, we chose not to move forward with delivering an estimate. We strive to build long-lasting relationships with our customers that will be sustainable for all involved, which means that unfortunately, not every project is one that we can take on. When that is the case, we seek to communicate this to client in a timely and professional manner. It is this standard for excellence in every endeavor we pursue that has earned us Angie's List Super Service Awards, Best of Houzz Awards, and Company of the Year through Certified Contractors Network. Again, any feedback we receive is appreciated, as it helps us sustain and improve upon our customer service at every stage of the contracting relationship. Sincerely, Tom Curren Companies

We are throughly impressed and delighted with the interior and exterior painting done by Emerson and his crew. Indeed, working with Emerson and his team has been the best experience we have had with painters in the more than two and a half decades we've been home owners. Emerson was skilled, meticulous and demonstrated a fine eye for detail. He listened closely to our wishes and concerns and formulated workable and aesthetically-pleasing solutions to plastering and painting challenges on the spot. Emerson and his crew were also exceptional in the care taken to protect the delicate plants that surround around the perimeter of our home. In sum, we hope to work with Emerson and his team again and recommend them highly and without reservation. Our exterior job also required some minor construction before painting could begin. One of these jobs comprised siding replacement on a gable wall more than 30' off the ground. Head carpenter Gilmar engineered and implemented a truly creative and cost-effective solution to a potential access issue associated with the height of the gable wall, the placement of gutters in the vicinity and roof-mounted solar panels. The work he and his team did was also impeccable, and they too took extraordinary care to protect plantings around the house. But for the fact that the house now looks amazing, one would not even know work had been done on the premises. We are still marveling at their skill and admiring the care taken. Gilmar and his crew did a fabulous job and have our highest recommendation.

Quote had to be scheduled a couple of weeks out, and had to schedule a follow up to bring the carpenter to look at the trim on the second floor. Quote process was very easy, detail was explained clearly, and options were laid out in an intelligible manner. Quote was by far the most expensive that we received, but decided that Tom Curren's reputation was worth paying for, especially as I would not be present at the house when the work was being performed. Work was scheduled about a 5 days after signing the contract. Both the carpentry and painting crews communicated clearly and accurately when they would arrive, and there were no deviations. The teams worked very hard, and on a couple of days worked until 7:30 pm to get the job done. Some changes/additional work had to be done, but there was no up-charge. Time was taken to walk me through all the work done just prior to its completion so we could ensure all the little issues had been addressed. Teams did a good job cleaning up afterwards. We've been very happy with the result, and really appreciated the team's recommendations based on their experience (which we never felt was trying to sell additional work, just an honest recommendation).

They were okay. They were fine. They can be expensive. There was no charge for the estimate. It was fine. The problem was they were estimating two things as a matter of fact. One of them was outrageously high. They probably made a mistake, and they fixed that estimate. Someone who came out, they have such an organized way of doing business. They send someone out and it looks very a professional approach, but that does not come cheap. They come out quite prepared. They come out with someone who does the estimating before hand with their tablets and computers and all of that. Having done all of that which is impressive at the start came out with a wrong number. Then they fixed it. It looks good, but needs a little work. They did fix the estimate, but we did not use them for one reason or another. They were quite responsive. There were two painting jobs, and one was incorrect but they fixed that one. The painting job for the outside was correct, I guess, but high relatively speaking. They were pleasant people. It is just that they didn't get it right the first time, and it was high, even so.

We called and set up a meeting to obtain an estimate. They sent a remodeling consultant named Scott Aponte who is listed on their website as a member of their "Estimating Team." He met with us on April 28 for more than 2 hours during which time we explained, in quite a bit of detail, what we wanted to have done. In our initial conversation, he told us that they had recently remodeled a bathroom similar to ours (our bathroom is only about 5' x 5' in size) for $50,000. Despite the fact that this company sounded like it would be on the expensive side, we told him that we wanted him to go ahead with preparing an estimate for us with as much detail as possible so that we could set priorities based on what we can reasonably afford. He indicated that he would prepare an estimate and we set up a meeting when he was supposed to come to our house again in about 2 weeks to go over the estimate. He failed to show up for the second meeting. I called the office in case there had been a misunderstanding about the timing of the second meeting and Scott said it was not on his calendar at all. I then wrote Scott another email with information that I had obtained in the meantime and asked him to send us an itemized estimate by email. He wrote back saying that they do not provide itemized estimates and that he thinks that we are inclined to pull our own permit and hire an installer and not a professional remodeling company. The conclusion that we would wish to pull our own permit was his, not ours. We would much prefer to have a contractor that would take care of all the permitting. And, given that we are expecting to spend a LOT of money in total on this project, we thought it was only fair to be provided with an itemized estimate so that we could understand what we would be paying for. Apparently, if you want to know how you are spending your money, don't go to Tom Curren because their "Estimating Team" refuses to provide itemized estimates, except maybe to tell you that a tiny bathroom will cost around $50,000 to renovate. We are disappointed in how we were treated and in the waste of our time.

We always appreciate feedback from our clients, and of course, it is always disappointing when a client is anything less than satisfied. In this particular instance, we were meeting with a new client who inquired about installing a new deck, siding replacement, new entryway and a bathroom remodel. The initial remodeling consultation meeting with the client is extremely important, as it is the first point of communication, and that time is spent determining the client's needs. Due to the detail and time that it takes to create a scope of work for a remodeling project- our first estimate provides ballpark figures based on the detailed conversation that occurs during the initial remodeling meeting. Once both parties agree to move forward with the design, we begin breaking down that initial scope of work in more detail, drawing in depth renderings, selecting materials, and so on. Unfortunately, we did need to reschedule the second appointment due to a calendar conflict, which is not typically the case. We were asked to deliver the initial estimate via email, but our Company prides itself on personally meeting with our clients to review the scope of work in depth. With the amount of work that goes into a renovation, it is very important to discuss the scope of work in detail with our clients. Efforts to reschedule the appointment to meet in person, in which we reached out by phone and email, were unsuccessful. We are proud of the work we provide, and of the satisfied clients we have earned throughout our 30 years of business. This has been displayed through our Angie's List Super Service Awards, Best of Houzz Awards, and most recently, earning Company of the Year through Certified Contractors Network for the second year in a row! Tom Curren rep promptly responded to our request for an estimate. Within a few days received a comprehensive estimate with photo graphs of work to be performed. Estimate of cost was not the lowest but competitive. Based on the recommendation of friends who had used Curren selected them for the job. The day the first crew arrived to wash down the house, the sales rep came with them to introduce the foreman and and regional manager. This began a help communication process. The foreman regularly checked in to obtain clarification of work and report on progress. For example, there was a question about the painting of new gutters and downspouts, which we decided should not be painted. Later we received a rebate since the gutters and downspouts had been included in the estimate. Even with all the rainy and cloudy weather in the spring of 2017, the the job was timely finished without shortcuts. When it was not appropriate to paint, they deferred the work.

The company had a deal where they sent out a color consultant associated with a paint company. The consultant met with my wife and me, we picked some colors... the painters showed up, were punctual and friendly, quick and efficient, did a great job... but the bathroom color was entirely wrong. (Tom Curren supplied the paint as per our specs). A light purple instead of a sea green. Also, we had a regular wall color and an accent wall color, and in some areas, they confused the two. Okay, mistakes happen. I guess there had been a miscommunication between the consultant and the office; the office and the painter. They went to fix it the next day. Painted the bathroom another wrong color! Although closer, it was a light sky blue vs. the sea green this time. Turns out, the painter had simply tried to eyeball the color match off the screen of his cell phone instead of having the paint store match the color number. Had the third repainting done. And this time, the color was right, but it was a shoddy, rushed job. No clean, straight lines, it's obvious they didn't tape. Paint sloshing over in an uneven line onto our bath tile, the edge of the sink, the toilet paper dispenser, the line between the baseboard and the wall.... I'm also 6'6" so I can see the tops of some window frames, where they didn't paint. The bathroom window was painted shut. Finally, this April we're opening some of our windows for springtime, and we've had two other windows painted shut. Nothing we can't handle, but we paid a premium for Tom Curren quality (they did a nice job for our downstairs neighbors the previous year), and didn't receive it. Again, if the color match had been correctly communicated, we could have given this job straight A's for quickness, quality, etc. But it wasn't. Which still could have been an A-minus, or B+ if they'd done the fix as professionally as the first go-round. But it wasn't. Disappointing.

We were told up front that TC was expensive, but that the work would be higher quality than other companies. This turned out not to be the case. The work was delayed over the course of two months. Parts, like our door, were not ordered correctly and had to be replaced causing delays (in fact we just found out part of the new door install is still not correct). One part was lost for our dishwasher that we just gave up on and ordered ourselves. Most of the quality complaints relate to the door. The hinges broke after a few months and when the Andersen tech came to fix them he called the install "horrendous" and one of the "worst I have seen". Overall, scheduling was a nightmare. The person who created our scope of work was fired halfway through the project. He had promised us that work which was not done would be removed from the final payment, which happened for some work but not others. We were happy to pay a premium given the quality of the work described by the individual that sold us the scope of work. Overall that quality turned out to be fine and we had a great foreman who was there and very communicative. Howver, at the end of the day our very expensive door on the addition still isn't installed correctly according to the Anderson consultant. I would not use Tom Curren company again.

The overall product was good, but communication suffered which left us wondering the whole time how much money we were going to end up spending in the end. We got an initial quote from Tom which included a line item breakdown, but then Tom stepped out and the project manager stepped in. Each time the project manager came to the house it seemed like there were additional charges and all of a sudden the line items from the initial estimate were explained away. Each time there was an update to the cost we tried to get a complete breakdown to understand where our overall budget was going to come out, but it was like pulling teeth. They were very friendly and I don't think they were trying to screw us, they were just disorganized and bad at communicating. Overall, the work product was really good. The painting was exceptional. There were a few times we had to point out issues that needed to be fixed (e.g., sloppy job installing molding, which left gaps between the molding and the wall) which I would have thought the project manager would have caught, but they did fix most of them when we identified the issue. The only issue with the final work product was the flooring. We had hardwood in the room where they removed the wall and they replaced the gap with a beam. The quote we received said they would patch the floor. In removing the wall, they used crowbars and chipped the hardwood that meets the gap/beam. They never fixed the chips in the floor. The project manager told us he was going to come back to do a final walkthrough, but he never did. We asked once or twice about the floor, but they never fixed it and we eventually gave up since the project was already over schedule. Fortunately, we now have a rug covering that area.
Description of Work: Removing one full load-bearing wall and converting another wall to a half wall.

We always appreciate feedback, and of course, it is disappointing when a client is anything less than satisfied. This is not typically how our jobs operate. Unfortunately, during this timeframe, our Company was going through a change in personnel. Since then, we have tightened [Member Information Removed] reigns and made [Member Information Removed] appropriate decisions to ensure that [Member Information Removed] members on our team represent [Member Information Removed] quality reputation that we have earned throughout our 30 years of business. Please check our other reviews to see our client's satisfaction and why we've earned multiple Angie's List Super Service Awards, Best of Houzz Awards, and, most recently, earning Company of [Member Information Removed] Year through Certified Contractors Network for an unprecedented second year in a row. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope you reconsider our Company for any future home-improvement needs. Sincerely, Tom Curren Companies

The house looks great! Of the three companies I got bids from TC was the most expensive, but they were also the most clear about exactly what needed to be done (what the prep and cleaning would involve, how many coats were necessary, etc.). I ended up going with them because they were going to do a full base coat and 2 coats of paint where others were only going to spot prime and do one coat of paint. For a couple thousand dollars difference, this seemed like a much better option. And I'm happy I went with TC. They had 3 guys on location every day until the job was done. The team was very nice and cleaned up after themselves every day. They found some rot in the trim after scraping, and were able to Bondo it so I didn't have to call in a carpenter. And after the job was done the team leader spent an hour going over every surface with me making sure I was happy with everything (then followed up by fixing a few spots that needed further attention). Very happy with the result, and TC's focus on making sure the job is done right.

Joe, the handyman that works for Tom Curren Companies did a lovely job. I also needed the nob on a valve under my sink replaced. He happened to have a nob in his truck which fit and which he installed without extra charge. Two other handymen/caulking people came before and refused to do the work. Joe had no problem completing the job.
Description of Work: I needed to have some caulking done in my bathroom build about a hundred years ago with original tiles and bathtub in place.
