The project went well overall and was done mostly on time. there was some confusion with the painting sub-contractor and it took longer than anticipated to get the area fixed painted. I was pleased overall.
Description of Work: Custom Contracting repaired our front porch after a bad accident. The carpenter was excellent, and paid attention to my new plants in the area. I was very impressed with their work. The job was covered by our home owner's insurance, but I am considering Customer Contracting for larger remodeling proejcts in my home now. They are very professional.

Bill and his crew did an excellent job. In particular, Bill designed a fix for a problem, unsightly side stairway and entrance to the house. He designed a very neat and finished-looking enclosure and re-constructed the stairway adjacent to it. We just showed him the area and said we thought it was unsightly and what would he suggest to fix it. I consider his work to be excellent in this matter, as this was not an easy problem to solve and he was very innovative in his re-design plan. We were very pleased with the results! We are indeed working with them again on our master bathroom in April.

Custom Contracting was great. From detailed initials estimate and job specification right through to close-out. This was a small job, but they took it seriously. Bill made some good suggestions early about the energy efficiency ratings of the windows I was considering. Work areas were always clean when we came home. They paid careful attention to dust and lead-paint related issues. Once the job was started, they worked quickly. I've had experience with some contractors where the job seems to drag on for no good reason. Not these guys. They seemed to be as interested as we were in the job going quickly and correctly. To top it off, the craftsmanship was also very good. As with all renovations and construction, there were some unforeseen circumstances and questions along the way and they were always dealt with fairly and professionally. I look forward to doing more jobs with them.
Description of Work: Installed four "new construction" windows on our third floor, replacing old drafty windows. Installed new PVC trim on the exterior to match existing trim and patched cedar shingles as needed. Demolished chimney down to basement, framed and shingled hole in roof; patched hole in third floor. Did not cut into walls on first or second floor. Patched up holes on third floor with an eye toward future work being done (per my instructions).

Description of Work: Although we did not end up selecting Custom Contracting we were extremely impressed with them. The General Manager, Scott Blain, responded promptly to our inquiry and met with us to discuss the project in depth. He also brought out a plumber on a second visit to better assess some of the trickier aspects of the job. They produced a thorough and professional proposal. It was clear to us that project would have been very capably handled. Our decision to use another company was purely financial.

I saw this company as a step above the rest in terms of level of communication, professionalism, and competency. But their quote was greater than twice the quote of the nearest reputable contractor for the same work & materials (twice what I list above). Chose not to go w/ them. I would have paid a 10 or 20% premium for their services beyond another reputable contractor - not 100%+ more.

They were professional and great to deal with from the day I first contacted them to get an estimate, to end of construction. I started with the kitchen. The estimate was detailed and complete, and Scott Blaine, the General mgr., took time to go over each item and answer all my questions. The contract contained all the specifics. The assigned project manager was easy to deal with and kept me informed as materials were ordered and delivered. He coordinated the job so there were no delays. As they were finishing the kitchen, the job had gone so smoothly that I decided to continue on with the bathroom. This was more complicated than the kitchen but they handled it without a problem. I asked for certain materials to be used, which they invcorporated in the design. After completing the bathroom I had them replace the dining room floor which had several layers of various materials all glued together - it was like an acheological dig. The new wood floor looks beautiful still, as do the wall paneling and chair rail they installed. The whole project took about 5 months from design to build. Throughout I was treated with respect, and they answered all my questions promptly and honestly. Everyone was courteous and helpul. Most important of all, the quality of their work is top notch, and they stand behind everything they do. I have used them on several smaller jobs since and have recommended them to friends.
Description of Work: Project included a complete kitchen and bathroom gut and remodel, plus new flooring and wall paneling in a dining room of a 70-year old apartment/condo. All electrical and plumbing were upgraded. Kitchen included installation of cabinets, counter tops, tile floor and backsplash, new appliances. Bathroom involved removing tub, shower, and floor and wall tile; then installing a shower, tile floor, fixtures, and a linen closet. Dining room floor was removed and new hardwood was installed. Chair rail and paneling were added to walls.
We love these guys. Super honest; excellent customer service. Very pricey, but we selected them because we felt we would receive superior service, which was definitely the case. Elena, the office manager, is a lovely person, very responsive to our inquiries. Craig made regular visits to oversee work. Dave, one of the carpenters, did a superb job in rebuilding our back deck. Rick Orcutt and his team are true painting professionals. The tile expert (can't remember his name--sorry!) did a beautiful job laying the tile in our small entry. The whole team, everyone we've dealt with, are nice people--especially in putting up with my incessant chattering and questions regarding details of the work completed. At the moment, we are doing a small update to downstairs bath. Due to tight funds, we have hired another independent contractor. Our future plans, however, are to add a master bath, and a complete kitchen remodel. When we do, we will call Custom Contracting, for peace of mind.
Description of Work: Rebuilt our back deck; installed new front door (framing included) and new back door (no new framing); installed new interior handrail; two new floor thresholds; painting of kitchen (subcontracted out to Orcutt Painting); laid new entry tile; various other small jobs.

Pros: 1) Very nice, HONEST people; responded quickly and with courtesy to requests. I have never experienced such an excellent level of service in any prior experience with tradespeople. 2) The lead carpenter's work was of high quality. 3) They clean up after themselves so well that the house was cleaner when they were working than after or before they started! Cons: They get a D when it comes to planning major aspects of project. From the get-go, we told them we wanted a whirlpool tub, and had concerns about the power needs of such a modern appliance in our 90 year old home. They checked the electrical system, and told us that it was adequate to support the model tub we wanted. However, when the electrician came we were face with an additional $900 charge to bring the electrical up to code. Additionally, the project ran 3 weeks late. This firm is dependable and trustworthy, but pricey!

Custom contracting was very responsive to changes in the specs. They only charged me the difference in cost of materials, despite the fact that it cost them in terms of extra labor time. I did feel like I had to ask a lot of questions, and keep on top of how things were being done to make sure the job was done to my satisfaction. For example, I had to ask them several times not to use the new decking as a ''workbench''. I also had to ask them to completely remove the ends of the railing from the old deck, which they had left several inches of sticking out of the house. Once I asked them, they did a very nice job with that. The fir railings ended up being nailed into the balusters from above, rather than using hidden fasteners as we had discussed. They installed a Harvey storm door for us, which didn't fit right and was not of great quality. Harvey would not help out with that. Custom Contracting tried to adjust the door frame, and ultimately refunded the full cost of the door.
Description of Work: We had our old deck torn down, a new deck installed with pressure-treated frame, fir railings, Ipe decking and a new stairway down to the backyard. They also installed a new basement window and repaired a termite-damaged sill near that window. The carpenters took a lot of care on the framing of the new deck. They identified and overcame challenges, including the corner of the house not being square, and using the existing footings which required a lot of effort with the framing. The first batch of Ipe decking was of variable quality (many boards had milling defects and a very rough grain which is unusual for Ipe). Custom Contracting worked closely with me to cull out all the bad boards, and use only the best of them. Unfortunately, I did have to pay an additional fee to get additional decking material (approx. $1300), and to have the new decking sanded, prepped and pre-stained(approx. $500) They worked with their supplier to ensure the second batch was excellent quality.

AFTER A MONTH, THEY CAME BACK WITH AN OUTRAGEOUS QUOTE FOR THE STAIRS AND NO MENTION OF THE FANS. I'VE USED THEM IN THE PAST AND THEY HAVE GENERALLY DONE GOOD WORK, BUT THEY WERE CLEARLY TRYING TO HOLD ME UP BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT I WAS ON A TIGHT SCHEDULE. WHEN I USED THEM IN THE PAST, ONE JOB INVOLVED EXCAVATION WORK, WHICH THEY SUB-CONTRACTED OUT. THE GUYS THEY HIRED WERE GREAT WITH A BACKHOE, BUT COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT AT ALMOST EVERYTHING ELSE THEY DID (CONCRETE WORK MOSTLY). CUSTOM CONTRACTING DIDN'T PROVIDE ADEQUATE SUPERVISION FOR THESE GUYS, NOR DID THEY MAKE SURE THEY EVEN READ THE CONTRACT ABOUT WHAT MATERIALS TO BE USED ETC.
Description of Work: I ASKED THEM FOR A QUOTE ON INSTALLING A SET OF PULLDOWN ATTIC STAIRS AND TWO BATHROOM VENTILATION FANS.

Response from Custom Contracting
WE TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN THE QUALITY OF OUR WORKMANSHIP, AND IN THE PROFESSIONALISM OF EVERYONE WHO WORKS AT CUSTOM CONTRACTING. THROUGHOUT OUR ENTIRE 14 YEARS OF PROVIDING EXPERT REMODELING SERVICE TO HOMEOWNERS IN THE GREATER ARLINGTON AREA, WE HAVE ALWAYS ADDRESSED CLIENT SATISFACTION ISSUES TO ENSURE A REMEDY THAT THE HOMEOWNER FINDS ACCEPTABLE. IT IS ONLY THROUGH A COMMITMENT TO OUR CLIENTS’ NEEDS THAT WE HAVE BECOME THE LEADING HOME REMODELING COMPANY IN THE AREA. WE UNDERSTAND HOW TO DELIVER EXCELLENT CLIENT SERVICE. ALTHOUGH WE HAVE EARNED A TREMENDOUS REPUTATION IN THE AREA, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER BUSINESS WE HAVE DEALT WITH HOMEOWNERS WHO ARE VERY HARD TO PLEASE, NO MATTER THE EFFORT. REGARDING THIS SPECIFIC COMPLAINT, PLEASE NOTE THAT THE MEMBER WAS HAPPY WITH THE SERVICE PROVIDED TO HIM ON A PRIOR PROJECT. HE FAILED TO SHARE THAT, IN THE PREVIOUS PROJECT HE ASKED US TO TACKLE A FRUSTRATING WATER DRAINAGE PROJECT WHICH WE SOLVED TO HIS SATISFACTION AT A PRICE HE FOUND.
