We used Kevin when he was d.b.a. Lexington Electrical and thought he did a reasonable job. When we needed additional similar service done, we decided to reuse Kevin. When we called, we gave him the scope of the job and asked if this was something he was interested in doing. He scheduled a time about a week out that met our schedule, since we were coming from out of town. Our scheduled time of service was 8-9 AM. Just after 9, we called Kevin to confirm and he confessed that he had forgotten the appointment. He said that he had a death in the family and his helper quit on him in the same week, so he was scrambling to find help. He agreed to come the following day between 8-9 AM. At 9, we called and he was still a few minutes away. When he arrived, he looked over the job and said that running the speaker wire might be impossible. He saved it for last. I agreed to serve as his helper if he needed non-technical assistance. He worked for 2 hours, and then said he needed to purchase materials. He said he would pick up lunch while he was out so he might be gone for an hour. Two hours later he returned and worked another 2 hours. Then he said his knees were bothering him and he knew I could finish the work, so he took a check and left. For us, he left installation of 2 outlet boxes - 1 for the cable and 1 for the speaker; stapling the cable and speaker wire down; and, the mess from each of his work locations. It is possible that the stress from a death and from a worker quitting suddenly accounts for the poor performance on this trip. But, late, incomplete, and somewhat expensive work ($100/hr inc. materials) is too much for us to be willing to try him again. UPDATE: Just realized that the switch he installed for a TV outlet he took off the switched side of the outlet rather than the unswitched side. Until we get that corrected the lights in the living room have to be on to use the TV. 15 years of services should result in better service, no matter what the circumstances. He always had the option to decline the work and did not. We assumed when he finally showed up that he was competent.
Description of Work: Run speaker wire for 2 new speakers Change electrical connection from tankless to regular water heater Install 1 new cable outlet Install 1 new electrical outlet

Response from Lexington Electrical Contracting
In 15 years of business, this is the first negative review I have ever had. Unfortunately, people rarely post a review unless they are unhappy with their service. In my defense, I had indeed had a death in the family on the same day my helper quit. So I had to take off to go out of town for a funeral, and then scramble to cover the jobs I had set up. I agreed to work Saturday on this job to make up for the fact that I was unable to make it on Friday. But by Saturday, I was simply exhausted. None of these reasons are excuses for poor service, but hopefully they make it more understandable. As for the cost of the job, materials can not be considered in an hourly figure as this customer has done. They have also neglected to count the time I spent going to get materials or travel time as part of the job. When a contractor comes to your house, they have to charge you for the time they spend traveling to your location, as well as the time they spend going to get materials for the job. They are still working when they are driving. Their overhead continues to cost them while driving, and with gas at $4 per gallon, nobody can afford to drive without charging. $400 is a very fair price to install 3 low voltage lines, add a receptacle, and connect a water heater. I left the customer maybe 15 minutes of work to do on their own after I left because unknown to the customer, I had injured my knee in the crawlspace and was bleeding when I left. The reality is that many customers want what they want, but don't really understand what is involved in making it happen. This customer decided that the 4 speakers in the living room that we had wired previously were not enough, that he needed 6, and they had to go on the two most difficult walls in the room to get to from the crawlspace. Please remember, there are two sides to every story. I stand by my work, my pricing, my ethics, and my company.
