You could tell he had extensive knowledge of the heating and cooling equipment.
They offer a VIP Service Plan that is very reasonable in cost. I like it because it will make sure we have them out twice a year (AC and Furnace Service), no up charge for emergency service and a discount on repair work.
"As I Investigated this poor Review I found that Mr [member name removed] Was given several recommendations including the one to recharge his system. In fact Mr [member name removed] was recommended a leak search before the recharge. Mr [member name removed] signed the ticket taht has these recommendations on them. We did offer Mr [member name removed] a new system due to the fact that his was very old and using a lot of energy. We could have saved him hundreds in utility bills and repairs from his old system, over the next few years with a safer quieter cleaner more efficient New home comfort system. We understand that our clients need options and three were given to Mr [member name removed]. Anything can be repaired and our expert opinion is that his was best being replaced. He was given the choice and chose to repair."
Appointment—Set for 8:30 am. Without going into the details of all the phone calls back and forth and the excuses, the tech finally showed up at 12:30--four hours late.
Scope of work—I told Mark Davenport up front what had happened at the property and what needed to be done, including the removal/replacing of the flue system because that it how you access the A coil. They were to provide a new A coil and a used AC unit, no older than 5 years old. They were to run new lines to the outside unit.
Price—We agreed to a price of up to $2000. However, just before he was to begin work the tech, Sean, said they were unaware of the issue regarding the flue (Mark later admitted he did know about this) and the need to run about 20 feet of wire for the 220 service (my electrician charges $150 to do this). Further, the A coil he brought was large for the furnace so he would have to make it fit and bend some sheet metal to cover the hole. For this he needed an extra $600 authorized or he would not do the job. By now I was tired of the hassle of being vandalized, waiting four hours for him and just wanted it done and the whole thing behind me. Big mistake; I told him to go ahead.
The Actual Work—Sean cut the flue pipes out to gain access. It took him literally 2 minutes and was part of the original bid. Because of his error in bringing an A coil that was too large he did have to cut a hole in upper part of the furnace and literally wedged it in. The metal of furnace was left rubbing on the A coil, which would create a leak in a short time. I did not bring it to his attention because now it was clear that there would be follow up with the company. He ran the connections to the outside unit, but left them so low that people would hit their heads on them. He ran the 220 line, but instead of running it all the way to the outside unit (an additional 5’) he placed a junction box on the short piece left by the burglars. However, did not put it in a place where the short whip would actually run far enough into the box. He cut back the shielding and put the clip on the internal wires. This is a code violation. Where he turned the breaker on the junction box sparked and arced where he had over-tightened the clip and shorted out the wires. He simply taped the burned wires and re-set the breaker. Still a coded violation. He did not have the staples required to secure the wire to the joists, as required by code.
The Used Equipment—Mark agreed to provide a unit that was 4 to 5 years, which was the age of unit that was stolen. When I checked the model and serial numbers it showed the unit is 7 years old.
Follow Up—When I spoke with Mark regarding all the mistakes he asked to meet me to see the work. He was late for the appointment. He looked over the work and found another error where Sean had crimped a drain hose that would eventually clog. He opened the furnace and found out that the metal had already started to rub on the A coil. He verified that the wiring was wrong and that the job was overall done poorly. Sean showed up late and Mark spent about 20 minutes going over all the mistakes. One of his biggest concerns seemed to be that Sean had not put the Davenport advertising stickers all over the place. He insisted on 4 of them. As to the pricing, Mark said he gave me a good deal upfront by $300. It seems to be that he needed to add the $600 to make up for giving me a good deal. In return he would have Sean put in a different disconnect box because Mark did not like the type that was there. Nice, but I didn’t ask for that. He left Sean to finish correcting his mistakes.
Bottom Line—Mark gave me a seemingly good deal up front and then added on to make up for it. He did not care that I wasted 4 hours waiting and then had to spend 5 hours while Sean did the work, plus spend another morning going back to correct the mistakes. He provided a unit older than promised and would not correct it. The only reason any of this was corrected was because I watched everything Sean did. Anyone else wonder how many homes he has worked on that are also full of mistakes, but just not discovered yet? It appears that Sean is not qualified to do the work he is allowed to do.
Please do not make the same mistakes I made. There were red flags and I should have paid attention and sent them packing. I also recommend that you check with the local government to if a contractor’s bond and license are current.
"Mr [member name removed], Was out to get something for nothing. we did the best we could to help him with his situation on his rental property. Our recommendations to do the job the most "long lasting way" was not fitting in his budget. we made the mistake in attempting to do the job he wanted. Due to the client wanting the lowest cost possible and would not agree to do it right we made the mistake of attempting to do it the clients way. Upon our final inspection I did find that we had done some of the things at low quality and we repaired each and every one of them at no additional charge. I believe Mr [member name removed] received much more than he paid for but he did receive what we always promise. Our attempt to provide 100 % satisfaction. I am sorry that we could not get him 100 5 satisfied event hough I made attempts above and beyond. I think he would only be happy with it if it were free."
