Beyond this initial hiccup, everything went very well. The guys that were doing the work were very courteous, prompt, and professional, and you could tell they have done this hundreds of times. They had even recently done an installation of the exact same tile that we decided to use on the floor (porcelain wood-look tile in 6"x24" planks). From what I have read this floor is slightly more difficult to install properly since the "boards" are so long and relatively narrow. From watching these guys, and seeing the finished product, I wouldn't have known this to be more difficult. They even nearly finished within the initial time frame (1 additional day) after beginning the project later than initially proposed. And man, it looks GOOD.
In the end, I would definitely use Austin Tile again. Andy was fantastic to work with up front, told me the main concerns that he had, and stuck to the initial quote he gave me, even though it was later found to be about 70 sq ft more than thought. I would highly recommend them to anyone else that is looking to get quality tile work done in a quick time, while still remaining affordable.
This was my first experience using Angie's List and the firm lived up to the comments posted about them.
They will be able to help you with your every need from concept/design through tile purchasing and installation. The whole team (subcontractors included) has a keen eye for detail and are trustworthy. They ensure that everything is done appropriately.
Don came out to look at the job the same day I called. Although I was a bit jaded because of the aforementioned bad contractor, I knew I could trust Don. He were very understanding and absolutely committed to doing the job right before, during and after execution. Austin Tile did not demand any money upfront and did not ask us to pay until after confirming the job had been done right.
They were very willing to order the tile from the same supplier we had used previously--although I am under the impression they do not normally work with this supplier. Austin Tile passed their significant contractor discount to us.
The guys who performed the work were punctual, courteous, positive and professional. In about four hours time they removed the first installation down to the plywood subfloor (including 1/2" particle board that the first contractor said could not be removed) and installed the new underlayment. They even suggested raising the door threshold slightly to ensure we would have the flexibility to use a rug after installing the new tile. After the tile arrived a few days later, they returned to perform the installation. The outcome was exactly what it should have been the first time around. Don also recommended a guy to reattach our carpet, who did excellent work as well.
A great end-to-end experience! Exactly what I hope for when looking for a contractor. Don't hesitate to call them!
Soon after the installation there was a a problem with the exposed tile edge chipping where the floor transitions from tile to carpet. This would happen as a result of stepping on the edge. They came back promptly to investigate, and subsequently cut a bevel across the leading edge. This addressed the problem without compromising the finished appearance in the least. They also changed a couple of accent tiles that we felt were imperfect in appearence. There have been no further problems.
The final product looks and feels great.
DO:
- research your job, particularly what the industry recommendations are to properly prepare the type of subfloor for the type of product you are having installed.
- get multiple bids.
- discuss the details and question what they do and why they do it the way they propose.
- research the heating products and understand the installation methods if this is part of your job.
DON'T:
- rush the process or the chances of making a bad choice are increased
- buy on price alone. If the preferred installer seems to be priced out of line, discuss it with them and see if they can work with you to arrive at a mutually acceptable figure.
