I have had three repairs to my two pleasure vehicles in the past - standard grind, fill, prime, and paint. Nothing short of excellent work and I was very satisfied. However, I found a dent in the roof that I wanted to try Paintless Dent Removal (PDR).
In May of 2013 I sent photos and received a quote. Never got around to scheduling the work, and the vehicle is stored during the winter. I recently contacted Church Brothers to schedule an appointment. Downtown was booked, but East Shadeland could get me in.
When I arrived, I found that my year old estimate was not good. I understand it was a year old, but the dent was the same and I was told PDR labor rates had not changed. The real change was Church Brothers no longer does picture estimates, nor stands by them.
So the dent was evaluated, in person, at a higher price. The person at the East Shadeland was very helpful and understood my disappointment, but her hands were tied by management policies.
So I decided to email the person who had done the original estimate. I asked if Church Brothers would stand behind that earlier estimate I had gotten in good faith. I had hoped they would honor their prior word, as I was a three-time former customer with thousands of dollars of previous business.
Much to my disappointment, the person I contacted did not even have the respect to deny my request in person, nor even by return email. The rep I was dealing with at the East Shadeland location had to pass along the refusal to stand by the previous estimate. That even disrespected their employee - if you are going to give an estimate and then refuse it at a later time, at least have the respect for the customer to deliver that message directly. I did not want to argue the issue with the local representative, because it was not her decision, and I did not want her to feel stuck in the middle.
So I reluctantly approved the job. There were still several problems with the whole process. Church Brothers personnel do not do PDF work themselves, but sublet the work to another company. The PDR work was done by noon the day after I dropped the car off, but I learned that the headliner removed by the sublet company would not be replaced until after close-of-business because the PDR person who does the disassembly/assembly work only works nights. And all the Church Brothers personal local to that shop would not touch it - I had to wait for the sublet company.
I drove by to look at the work, and while the dent was removed quote nicely, there was polishing compound strewn inside the interior. Someone had rolled the windows down (I had left them up). A simple roll up of the windows would have prevented that issue. I don?t think I was supposed to see that.
Now I had to wait for car washing - outside and inside. I called to find that was scheduled for the end of the day, by Church Brothers personnel but after all the other non-PDR work. I complained about that, and to their credit, Church Brothers called back and said they would have the car ready by noon.
I just seemed that through the whole process that the farmed-out PDR work was the unwanted stepchild not deserving of Church Brothers? finest attention.
I was quite pleased with the PDR work, but not pleased with the second-hand treatment of PDR work, and the lack of personal attention to the estimate not honored. Interestingly enough, Church Brothers personnel did not do the only work I am satisfied with - except the customer service rep at the East Shadeland location - she was terrific, but again, powerless to affect any change to the situation.
So my point to Church Brothers is, whether it is fair or not, a business is judged by ?what have you done lately?. If the person I directly contacted told me, ?We no longer do picture estimates, but we value your business - past, present, and future, so I will stand behind what we wrote initially?, I would have been satisfied with the business practices, even in light of all the other issues.
Now the three former excellent experiences are somewhat tarnished with this less than stellar incident.
They even cleaned and detailed my truck, saving me a trip to the carwash!
I had to postpone my original appointment and they were very understanding and worked with me to find another date.
I had asked them to assess an issue I was having with my tires, and they told me that it was a issue with the bearings in my right driver side tire, and recommended that going to a tire specialty place would be a better way to address this issue. They told me that the specialty place would be able to provide the service I needed for a lower price. I really appreciated this advice.
I hope that I don't have any future body repair issues with my car, but if I do, I will definitely go back to Church Brothers.
