I find them to be fabulous. They are wonderful with old house plumbing. It is really difficult to find people who are good with old houses and plumbing related to that. That job is really tough, and they do it very well. They are so good that I have recommended them to others, and they all have the same thing to say about Bedell. They have done things which other did not want to touch. They have been wonderful. I rate the very high overall.
Description of Work: I use Bedell Plumbing Inc for plumbing solutions in my house. I was so happy with the service they gave me that I started a business relationship with them. I hired them to service industrial large industrial sterilizers. I had a long-term problem with original plumbing in my house. Every plumber that came to see it told me that the problem can’t be fixed, and I will have to remodel the complete bathroom. The bathroom is very old, the tiles are concrete, the tank is high on the wall, and the water pipe coming from the back on to the top of the tank. That pipe was rotted and everybody told us that we will have to remodel the entire bathroom to change that pipe. However, Bedell plumbers knew how to fix it and they fixed the pipe and also redid the original plumbing. They saved me a lot of money. They finished the work for few hundreds of dollars and within few hours. Now that’s what I call good plumbing.

After having problems with my sink draining slow, as well as backing up when the dishwasher was running, I contacted the company. On the phone we discussed what was occuring, and I also mentioned that my disposal had been broken for some time. It was felt that since the was only a back up on the garbage disposal side of the sink, that there was probably a blockage in the area. I decided to have a new disposal installed. Doug arrived promptly at the scheduled time. When he went to turn off the hot & cold water under the sink, he found and showed me that the hot water turn off was spinning, but not turning off the water. He replaced the turn off on the hot water side, and then installed the disposal. After running lots of water in the sink, and running the dishwasher we found that the problem was resolved. Doug was very pleasant and helpful. I told him that I was anticipating have my counter and sink replaced, so he left me some information regarding that.
Description of Work: I had a new garbage disposal installed, as well as a new hot water shut off knob.

I am pleased with the result. I'd been told in the past that it was not possible to put a shower in this bathroom. The plumber seemed to know what he was doing, and he worked hard to make me satisfied with the result. Because the tub had previously had a 2-handle faucet and we were changing to a 1-handle faucet, the tile around the tub had large holes that needed to be covered. Originally this was going to be with a oval metal plate, but some unexpected damage to some tile made this not a possibility. I was pleased with how this was dealt with: The plumbing company immediately called a very experienced tiling company, and a representative came by that day to work with me. (I pay for the tile work, but I don't feel this is unreasonable considering the situation.) The plumber kept me informed of what was going on and showed me where things were challenging and allowed me to understand and contribute to his decision making.
Description of Work: Installed a shower in a tub bathroom with incomplete pipe access. The plumber had to work with 1.5" concrete walls with tile.

Friendly company allowed me to re-schedule my first appointment after a last minute conflict on my part. Arrived exactly on-time for the new schedule and checked what was to be done. Brought in all the equipment, performed the location in a fast and efficient manner and marked the location, all the while describing what he was doing for my benefit. Cleaned up and put everything back in its place. Price was at the low end of their phone estimate range. Plumber was neat and polite and friendly. Highly recommended after a great experience.

We were having flushing problems with our upstairs toilet. We called Bedell Plumbing yesterday, and today we have a new toilet even though this was not an emergency call. This is not the first time we have used Bedell Plumbing, so we knew we would get great professional service at reasonable cost. In the past they have installed a water heater, snaked out the sewer line, installed a garbage disposal. All with superior service.

Hot water heater was not heating--electrical problem as it was tripping my breaker. I was preparing to have the entire water heater replaced, but the technician said all I needed was a heating element. everything else checked out on it. I appreciated the honesty. He could have easily just said it needs to be replaced and sold me a new one. It saved me $450. And the work was done with 4 hours of my initial call. I had a hot shower that evening!

VERY BADLY. Initially they were very responsive, professional and gave me a reasonable quote of $3250 (this included a $250 Angies List discount) and sold me on the minimal damage they would do to my yard since they owned a boring tool and would not need to did a trench through my yard. When they came out to do the job a day or two later with a small machine to dig a new hole for an outside water meter pit they said they could no longer do the job, needed to come back in a few days and then more than DOUBLED the estimated price to a maximum of $7500. (Worst case scenario). I was very confused on why the number they quoted when they accepted the job more than doubled but the person who mans the phone is very smooth and gave many reasons including an error in the initial assessment of the pipe size required and the amount t of work needed to complete the job. I am not a plumber and trusted this company; I work and already had taken 2 mornings off work to get the job going and trusted this "worst case scenario" would be minimized since they seemed to honest. The came back a few day later with an 18 TON CRANE Digger to dig a small 3x3x5 water pit hole in my front yard and then proceeded to try and route the machine through my 50 year hold hemlocks hedges along my front sidewalk landscaping!!!!! They had not even started digging the hole and already knocked off 5-6 limbs, and put a permanent hole in my row of trees. I ran outside, halted the work, and redirected them to dig the hole from the driveway side of the yard which would only do minor sod damage. The machine operator promised me he would only "scrape" a few limbs - I insisted he stop and he then proceeded to knock of 5-6 more limbs trying to back the machine out through the hedges. This is a company I picked because they said they would do minimal damage to my yard due to having a boring tool and they thought it would be OK to permanently damage by trees - They said -Don?t worry they will grow back. I am a Master Gardener and they caused a permanent visible damage to the front view of my house. They said most people prefer their trees to be damaged vs. their lawn and that all Plumbing Jobs cause a little bit of damage that they a re NOT responsible for. At no time did they tell me there would be any tree damage or give me a vote in tree damage vs. a bit of lawn damage. After they move around to the driveway side they proceeded without problem - only a bit of sod regalement would have been required if they has done the job from the driveway side. I am sick that they permanently marred one of my historic trees and did not even acknowledged my concern or offer any kind of compensation. I was so concerned over the common since of how they approached the job, I took the ensure mooring off to supervise the crane operator. When they finished the water put hole they did not even bother to level out the dirt around the new water meter access port. The left a huge pile of dirt - I was sick when I came home that night. They did the job in one day, damaged my trees left mounds of dirt in my yard and left an unitemized bill for $7500. I believe they were taking advantage of a woman who lives in a nice neighborhood and would advise anyone using this company to get a second quote before suing them. They sucked me in with a low quote - saw the urgency of the job and then more than doubled the job. After they dug the water pit, they then told me there was good news - which the pipe leading into my house was so large they did not need to bore a hole - they could simply push the new plastic pipe through the old galvanized steel pipe. Good new was nice because I had assumed that this meant the 7500 worst-case scenario would go down. Wrong they still charged me all $7500 for one day's worth of work. The did have to come back out a second day bit only because they failed with water company's inspection of the hook-up. I asked them why the used an 18 ton crane to do a 3-3 hole in my yard and they said it is because they need that size machine to dig the hole in the street. I asked them why not bring both a little digger along with the big machine to minimize the damage to my yard and they gave me a blank stare and said most people do not mind a bit of "tree damage" This company is very smooth so I was advised to ask for an itemized bill, which they have still not provided, but now they now state the total was more like $8300 and they lost money on the job. They said the had to charge me for renting then equipment when the first day on the phone they told me they owned all their equipment. I had idea a company could be so sloppy, dishonest. I feel so totally taken advantage of this is the fist time I have issued a report on Angies List in the 10 years of renovating an taking care of this beautiful home in Meridian Kessler. They had to dig a hole in the street to connect the main and did not finish the asphalt. When I asked them about this, they said they would come back in the spring and "patch it up" but still required payment in full even though they have not finished the job. Please do not sue this company - more than one when they were trying to justify the 7500 they changed their story on how they would do the work, what equipment they owed, how much it would cost, the Angies List discount "disappeared in the revised estimate", how they would perform the work and never ever disclosed any damage would occur to my trees. I have still not received the itemized Bill and have no idea how to remedy the claim that I owe them this money. I am more than willing to pay for good work done but they people took advantage of me and ruined my beautiful trees along my front sidewalk. The reason I first picked them is because they said if required they owned all of they own equipment including a boring tool that would leave no damage to my property and offered a 250 Angies List Discount. This appealed to me since I have seen may homes in Meridian Kessler with a trench through their yard die to the same repair.

Response from Bedell Home Services
“We understand this customer's frustration but respectfully disagree with several of her points and wish to offer our perspective on the project. The Project The customer's water pressure had dropped significantly and they could hear a constant sound coming from their pipes. After preliminary investigation we positively identified the problem as a leak in the water main between the home and the street. Original Estimate The full extent of underground plumbing issues is often unclear until some digging and investigation can be done. For this reason we provide a price range that includes the maximum cost we can anticipate for the project. When our plumber and excavation crew were on-site it became apparent that this project was unfortunately a "worst-case scenario". As the customer states in their complaint, it did turn into an $8300 job, and we did lose money. However, because we provided a written estimate with a price range we honored that range even though we underestimated the extent of what "worst case" could be in this situation. Equipment used & tree damage Many homes in Meridian Kessler have decorative brick or stone walls in front of their homes, including this customer. When we got our equipment on-site we discovered that we could not get our excavator in place without dismantling part of the wall. We utilized one of our backhoes with an extended-length capability to reach across the wall to do the necessary digging without taking part of the wall out. However, we also recognized that the customer would likely lose a couple bushes and limbs due to where the equipment needed to operate. We agree that there was damage to limbs & hedges and we had clearly informed the customer to expect such damage - it was unavoidable given the circumstances. The customer's landscaping is beautiful and we recognize that even though we communicated that damage would occur, it was obviously worse than what she expected. In spite of losing money on this job we agree to pay the customer $500 if that will increase her satisfaction with the job. Water Bill Our work did not fail any inspections with the City. However, another “worst case scenario" factor we discovered was the customer's "street key" (a device used by the water company) was not in conformance with Code. The only legal remedy was to remove the street key which we had no idea could have been in code violation when we bid the job. The water company required that a new water meter be installed outside the home (previous meter was inside). Fees charged by the water company are completely out of our control. Though the water company originally indicated they would charge $600 for the meter we recognized they could charge up to $3,000. We shared that range with the customer, and for some reason the water company decided to charge the maximum amount possible. That decision was completely out of our control. However, knowing the customer wasn't happy with the project we contacted the water company on several occasions in a gesture of our goodwill, and eventually they agreed to reduce the fee to $600. Angie's List coupon We do not have an Angie's List coupon. Perhaps the customer talked with other companies about this project and confused our company with one that does have a coupon. To more fully understand our commitment to customer service, prior to this customer's complaint to Angie's List we gave the customer a toilet lid matching her circa 1940 toilet. These toilets and lids are rare and expensive. Patching the street Per City of Indianapolis regulations we are required to repair the street anytime cutting and digging in the street is performed. However, asphalt companies that perform street paving do not operate in the winter. There is a special patch mix available to temporarily fill areas disturbed during the winter, which we used in this project. It is standard practice to use the temporary patch in the winter and replace it with smooth asphalt in the spring when the asphalt plants resume operation. The pavement replacement is an issue between us & the City, not us & the homeowner. The City has not taken issue with how the pavement was replaced, nor do we expect them to. Per our contract with our paving company we have already paid for them to replace this in the spring and would be happy to provide proof of payment. Given these circumstances, it is not appropriate for the customer to withhold payment for any portion of the pavement work.” - Gary Bedell, Vice President

Overall, it was a positive experience. We were upset to find our old water heater leaking, but Jay Bedell (hope I have the name right) was very calming and walked us through turning it off to stop the leak. The next day, they installed a new water heater, and upon discussion, we added a device that manages the water pressure (possible reason for premature failure of the previous unit). About a week later we learned that the installation did not meet the building code. Again, Bedell was patient with us, and resolved the issue to our satisfaction at no extra charge.

My husband did not understand why we had to pay to snake the line twice. They explained that the clogged pipe, when the septic tank was emptied, responded to a vacuum and filled with debris again. We liked everyone involved but with the septic tank pumping, it was a $750 weekend. We had no choice. We had to have our lines cleared and the tank pumped. The technicians went above and beyond to dig up the lid and show us how full the tank was. We are getting sewers in a few weeks and we are entertaining a bid from Bedell to hook up the line to our house.
Description of Work: Water from a bathroom toilet was backing up into the shower. We called in the morning and came out in the afternoon. Water also was leaking from below the toilet. They pulled the toilet (a $125 charge -told us before-) and ran a line to the septic tank. After no luck, they suggested that the septic tank was full. We were skeptical, so they asked permission to check. The technician began digging for the cover and another truck came and that driver pitched in. The tank was full. We called several companies but no one could respond until we called Mac's Septic. They came out about 1 p.m. Sat. and pumped the tank. My husband flushed all toilets before the truck left and all seemed well. An short time later I flushed the problem toilet and the shower flooded more. We called Bedell back and for another $210 they sent out a technician within an hour. He again pulled the toilet and ran a line. All of a sudden the shower and drain cleared but the technician did not hit any blockage and did not know why. He reset the toilet. The day before they noticed that the toilet had not been set right by the tile installers in a previous remodel. They caulked the toilet and it was a lousy job. The technician apologized and suggested we not caulk it because of the contrast between the stone floor and toilet. We took his advice and doubled checked with the owner this morning. He cooncurred.

On 10/20/2009 we received a call from the member regarding sewage in his crawl space. After investigation, we found that his sewer line was collapsed allowing sewage to back-flow into his crawl space. He was given an estimate with two options. He agreed and signed the proposal. Due to the fact that he was unable to use his sewer system, we began work the next morning. The member explained that he didn't have the money to pay the full amount at this time due to personal issues. Although it is not our common practice, we extended him a 60 day line of credit due to hardship. We proceeded to excavate and repair his collapsed sewer line. We installed a new pvc sewer from outside of crawl space to edge of city sidewalk which was necessary due to root damage done to existing clay tile sewer. (option #2 of the estimate $3,500) . After installing the new sewer and imbedding it in stone, we backfilled and left the dirt in a small mound form to allow for settling (approximately 2' wide) if not, the yard would have a dip in it. We also raked all extra debris from the rest of the yard. After the job was complete, we collected a check for partial payment and received a signature stating that he was satisfied with our work. We had no further contact with the member. After reviewing the complaint on Angie's List we contacted him to see if there was a misunderstanding. He informed us that he was happy until his son-in-law started complaining and that his niece actually posted the complaint. We asked that he read the complaint and contact us so that we could resolve this issue. We are still unable to get a response after several attempts.

We were first introduced to Bedell Plumbing on a Sunday when we awoke with no water. I called numerous plumbers in the phonebook that advertised 24 hour service, but what they actually meant was that they answer 24 hours (they don't necessarily send anyone out on a weekend.) I spoke to Jay at Bedell. He sent someone right out to fix the switch & gauge on our pump. The technician was very polite and extremely knowlegeable in his area of expertise. While he was at my home, I inquired about a new water softener. When the technician arrived to install the softener, he was exactly on time. The tech said that when a customer expects an 8am appointment, it means that the tech is at the door at 8am. I was very impressed. The tech took special care to put down tarps to protect my laminate floors. When the job was finished, he cleaned everything up. Jay also gave us needed information on how to get the most out of our new softener. They gave us 200 lbs of free salt also! We were so happy with their previous work that we hired them to put in 2 handicapped toilets. We needed ceramic tile (in our downstairs bathroom) replaced. We also wanted a permanent shower curtain rod put up. Bedell Plumbing was very easy to work with. We received very good estimates on everything we wanted in a timely manner. Overall, we are extremely pleased with their work and we will definitely call them with our next plumbing problem!

It was a great experience. They worked with us to figure out the best overall solution to the problem. They were very knowledgeable about our options. The work was performed professionally and completely.
Description of Work: I used Bedell Plumbing to seal a septic pit. They ended up having to replace it; not through anything they did wrong. They discovered a problem while re-sealing it. They vented the same septic pit properly. They then did excavation in the front of our house to replace a broken sewer line. Then they did excavation in the back to tie in the sump pump that is charged to the storm sewer, and to re-route our down-spouts.

They were good. They did a very good job and they explained what they were doing. I will grade them high across the board.
Description of Work: Bedell Plumbing Inc put in the water line from the street into the house and got it connected about two years ago.
