He came out the day after I called to check out the work I needed done. He said he would get back to me and never did. I called him again and wanted the estimate. He didn't have it and said he would call back in the middle of the following week. That week went by and still no response. I went ahead and got another Angies's list member and hired him. He is scheduled to do the work I need done on June 24th. I WOULD NOT recommend ChercoCreativeConstruction to no one. Very un-professional!

[member name removed] is correct in that I was not able to deliver the proposal to him. I was tardy in getting the information as I had promised however I did phone him indicating that I needed an email address so that I could send the estimate to him. When I got no response I went to his home to deliver the proposal and saw that he was discussing the project with another contractor so I felt the opportunity was passed and moved on as the volume of opportunities has been strong this spring. [member name removed], if you read this, my apologies and because of this experience I will be enacting measures to improve my response time to my potential clients.

Jack and his crew did an outstanding job, and our new patio and walkway look great! All work was done in a timely and very professional manner, everything that was done was explained in detail to my husband and myself, and Jack and his crew are so very pleasant to work with. :) Everyone came on time every day, cleaned up and hauled all materials away at the end of the project, and even put up a new mailbox set in concrete for me.
Description of Work: I contacted Jack in early September 2012 and within a week he came over with his crew to give me an estimate on removing the existing concrete patio and stoop, doing the necessary regarding, and pouring the new stoop and patio in a stamped concrete pattern. My husband and I also needed a tree removed by the existing patio and decided to have a stamped concrete patterned walkway installed around the side of our house too. The total price of these additional items to be done was approximately $3,440.

I called Jack in early September, and he came out within a couple of days and gave me a written estimate. Within about a week to 10 days the windows were delivered to my home and installed two days later. The entire installation process went very well: workers showed up right on time, windows were installed in a timely manner, and a nice job was done on clean up, hauliing away the old windows, etc.
Description of Work: replacement windows installed - two double hung windows installed in dining room, one large fixed window in the foyer above the front door, and two double hung windows in master bedroom.

We called Jack and set up an appointment to have him come out to do an estimate. He arrived on time and spent time checking out our basement remodel. The job was too big for him to do on his own, so he connected us with Bob and John who also came prior to giving us a bid on our project. Although we had to follow up with Jack to get the estimate, we got the estimate and it was very reasonable. Bob and Joel came within two days and got the job done in 2.5 days. They arrived each day on time, were very courteous and did a great job!

I scheduled an appointment with Mr. Cherco to meet on April 7th at 8AM at my rental property. He was the only contractor I saw that day that was on time.Time is of the essence in the rental business, and I explained to Mr Cherco that I needed some work done between tenants. His task was to prepare an estimate for three handyman tasks I needed done. From the start, it looked as if he was going to be a "keeper". He had all the equipment he needed, and he even crawled up in the attic to get a better look. After measuring everything out, we exchanged cards and he said he would have an estimate to me in a week, which would have been April 14th. After two weeks had elapsed, I followed up with both phone and email messages, and got no response.A month has now passed with no response, and I have engaged someone else of course.Mr Cherco's detachment in this case is contrary to the other reviews I read here and is curious. You can come down this a couple ways I guess. If this is the way he no-bids a job, I don't want anything to do with him.On the other hand, if you have lots of slack in your project schedule, he might be worth pursuing based on the other favorable reviews.
Description of Work: Mr Cherco gathered information to prepare an estimate.
We met with Jack and went through the basement for his initial assessment. Our next meeting was with Jack, the framer, and the electrician to review how we wanted everything laid out and configured. Our next meeting was with Jack and the plumber to discuss the bathroom layout and review the roughed in plumber. We met Jack one more time to finalize what work would be done by us during the remodeling since we had free labor available (ie. son without a job at the time). Our next meeting with Jack we discussed more options about the finished basement including flooring, ceilings, bath, and additional work to be performed elsewhere in the house. We met with the electrician one more time to review the upstairs work with the light fixtures and ceiling fan replacement. With this initial agreement Jack developed an estimate and price breakout with a payment plan. We took about a week to review everything and then we signed the contract to allow the work to proceed. Jack handled the building permit with Kane County. Since the house is a geodesic dome, it took additional time with the county to explain the plans and get final approval. We had to clear the basement of all items and Jack provided several suggestions for storage locations. We completed the removal of the items from the basement. Jack arranged for the framing material to be delivered and work began around Jul 11. The framing was completed in less than a week. The family decided to change the wall to the laundry room and the closet on the end of the hall, which was handled nicely by Jack and the framer. Once the framing was complete, the electrician and plumber came in to do their initial portions of the work. We asked for 3 additional electrical outlets be added in the laundry room, which was planned in without issue. During this period we started to work with Jack on the flooring and fireplace location. We changed our minds several times before settling on a split arrangement of carpet and tile. Jack coordinated a meeting with the flooring company and we started the decision process of which tile, what type of carpet and finally colors. We settled on a fireplace location and met with the fireplace company to determine how it would be installed. Jack and that team had several ideas and we settled on a configuration that made the most sense for the venting and desired look. Since we had previously purchased a basement door replacement, we had asked Jack to install the new door since the existing steel door had rotted out. Jack arranged the installation which took a portion of a day as additional cement wall tear down was required to get the frame to fit correctly. They installed the door and installed new locks which we provided. The electrician was brought in next and completed his work within 1 day working around limitations from the ceiling and optimal light placement. Once the framing, electrical, and plumbing was complete, Kane County completed their inspection. The insulation team came in and completed the full basement insulation in about 1 day. They insulated areas in the laundry room as well to make sure there was good insulation everywhere in the basement. The bathroom shower and tile work were completed during this time as well. We had to work out the final tile color and arrangement prior to work starting and Jack was accommodating to our last minute adjustments. With this complete, the drywall work began. The team worked very efficiently and were done in less than a week. The tapers and mud team were also efficient and timely and it took just over another week to complete this work. We started the painting and completed 2 primer coats as well as 2 color coats in about 2 weeks with delays for summer trips and work interruptions. With the painting complete, the next items were bathroom fixtures, which Jack and our family worked through with suggestions, fit checks, and finally a decision with some of the purchases being handled by us and the remainder by Jack and team. We worked with Jack on the ceiling tile selection, final tile and carpet selections. Jack arranged the installations around our schedules. We also scheduled the replacement of the kitchen sliding glass doors which took less than a day with a very good team. They also replaced some of the aluminum siding (finish pieces) with the excess material from the kitchen door to clear up a few dings, nicks, and scratches. We handled the cleanup of the material from the window installation taking the scrap material to Elgin Recycling. Next came the installation of the carpet and tile. While cleaning up the floor in preparation for the upcoming installation, we had a heavy rain which resulted in a leak through the basement wall. Having already completed the painting, we had to try to seal the wall from the outside. We made the first attempt by digging out the area on the outside and finding the crack. We used a product from the local home repair. We thought we had it, but the rain the following day showed a slight leak yet. Jack called a local basement crack sealant expert and he came out the next day. The sealant expert used a injection method that filled the crack from within the exterior seal we had installed. It turns out our seal would have worked had we gone another 3 inches underground. With the newly injection sealed crack completed, we proceeded to do the tile and carpet installation. The tile installation had to be done in 2 shifts since the tile order was not completed on the first delivery. Jack coordinated the shipment and delivery to allow the floor tile installation to complete in less than 3 days. Again an expert job getting the tile cut to the corners and walls. The tile work was matched to the walls almost exactly. The carpet went quickly in the family area and they moved to stairway to the upstairs area of the house. The carpet was installed expertly around the corners and tile pattern that had been altered slightly to work around the fireplace tile work that was required by code (Jack talked to Kane County to get the exact requirements). The trim work as delivered next and we started the painting and prep work for installation. This took about another week, while the actual installation took only about 2 days. We did the final touch up after installation as we miscalculated the amount of colored versus white lengths. The ceiling tile was delivered next along with the framing material. This portion also went very quickly despite having to work all the odd angles and trying to maximize the floor to ceiling spacing. The fitting work turned out very nicely as well as having the desired effect of a noise reducer. The effort took about 3 days overall. The electricians came in and completed the electrical work including the phone line, antenna cable, and light fixtures. The electrician took care of all the light fixtures upstairs as well including installing a new light fixture on the exterior of the house for the basement entry. We then completed the bathroom installation with fixtures and vanity. We had to call the plumber back into to move the water lines since the vanity we choose did not allow a straight connection of the water valves. This was accomplished in just over a day and the bathroom. The bathroom shower, sink and toilet installations went as expected. We sealed the shower tile ourselves. We had a short period of limited activity trying to decide what to do with the closet shelves. We ultimately purchased and installed to closets worth of shelves. Jack and his team installed the remaining bathroom closet shelves that had to be custom fit. Jack worked with us to complete the fireplace installation including floor and wall tile surrounding the fireplace all within a couple of days of our decision on the layout. While this was happening, Jack coordinated with the Kane County Builder Inspector to hold his final inspection allowing full occupancy which went off without any issues. Overall Jack and his team were very accommodating in the planning, execution, final close-out phases of the project. Jack made sure we got what we wanted. He made sure we met with all the contractors to discuss our desires and concerns. He made sure the work flowed smoothly while also working on other projects. Jack's and his teams suggestions on products to be utilized during the project were very useful and saved us extended periods of research. The entire team was professional in the work and the final product quality is very good. I have likely left out some details of the project, but overall a job very well done. Even my granddaughter made a new friend in Jack's dog who was a welcome guest anytime he visited.
Description of Work: We had a complete basement remodeling including the addition of a bathroom, living area, and recreation area. The entire area was framed, insulated, and finished. We also had additional work provided that included replacing a door to the basement, new sliding glass doors for the kitchen, and electrical work upstairs including replacing light fixtures, replacing a ceiling fan, and replacing all the smoke and CO alarms. We also had additional outlets and lighting installed in the laundry room area of the basement. On a surprise basement wall leak, Jack coordinated a basement seal crack repair within 24 hrs. Since the house is not a conventional frame house (Geodesic Dome), the work team had considerable more angles and corners to deal with. The tile ceiling was also a challenge trying to maintain as much height as possible since the height of the basement started at 8 ft. We also had a Direct Vent Fireplace installed that required punching a hole through the basement wall. We also had the basement stairwell finished including bringing the headers into compliance with the newer codes. The flooring is a combination of tile and carpet which were cut to match the irregular walls. The basement bathroom is a full bathroom that includes a walk in shower area. The house when built had provisions for a basement including roughed in plumbing. However in order to get the shower and toilet installed, the basement floor had to be broken up slightly to move the roughed in plumbing slightly to accommodate the new fixture locations. The shower is a membrane arrangement that is not supposed to leak. The bathroom vent was placed in a side wall to the outside. In order to complete the walls, the furnace inlet and vent pipes had to be reconfigured to minimized utilized space. The basement had existing windows , however they required additional trim work to fill the gaps from the framing to the new basement walls.

Thank You! The Member were a joy to work with. Overall the project ran a little longer than I would have anticipated but achieving the results that they wanted and knowing that they are very happy is why I do what I do for a living. Being able to help customers like the Member realize a dream of expanding and upgrading their living space is what my business model is all about. It's also rewarding to be able to work on a project like this where the conditions are not what you would consider being normal, ie the geo-desic dome configuration. Having the confidence of the customer and the liberty to insure that all aspects of the project were done not just to code but above and correctly is the ideal situation for a contractor. As the Member pointed out, this was their basement. I was the contractor. I helped them get what they wanted and they were accommodating when the conditions required a change in original plans that sometimes meant additional minor expense. And Riley, my dog, loved being able to visit with the family and enjoy inspecting the large property. I look forward to being able to work with the Member on any future projects that they may have. Jack Chercho and his employees are nothing but professional and courteous. Jack came out with one of his employees to measure all of the windows, and to look at the electrical work that needed to be done. He had an estimate back to me promptly and gave me a great price on all of the work that needed to be done. Most of my neighbors that have had to replace their sliding glass doors had to go with the transom window above it, but Jack was able to find a sliding glass door that fix the size of the existing one.The team of electricians he brought in were great also. They ran the electrical to the two bedrooms and had a ceiling fan in one and a light fixture in the other faster than I though possible! The best part about working with Jack and his crew is that they were all so polite and respectful of my belongings. They took down my blinds above the windows and sliding glass door they were replacing, and put them back up even more secure than they were before. They also made sure that everything was cleaned up and the garage was taken with them. It was great! I have had numerous complements on how wonderful my door and windows look. Jack called back about a week after the job was done to make sure that I was happy with the work, and of course I said I was thrilled. My house is a lot warmer this winter thanks to him and his crew. He was back out at my house about a week ago to measure the remaining windows so I can have them replaced this spring. I would highly recommend Cherco Creative Construction for any job no matter how big or small. The customer service and quality of work is an A+ in my book. You can reach Jack at (630)926-5344.
Description of Work: Replaced a sliding glass door, replaced three windows, installed new locks and deadbolts on two doors, ran the electrical for two bedroom fixtures and placed a ceiling fan and ceiling fixture. On a previous job, they did drywall patching, and laid laminate flooring.

It was good and the price was fair. He identified a couple of things when we did the walk around which worried me that I was being upsold. They were problems that I had never seen and they were going to be problems so they were legitimate. He was rather proactive and I didn't get a hard sell. He was very upfront. He had another project going on which was a major remodel, but he communicated that to me. I'll probably be calling him in the next two weeks for more work.

I must say that the two gentlemen who painted inside my home did a phenomenal job! The best job I have ever had done. They not only did a great job painting, but fixed all of my drywall cracks completely. None have reappeared! They were on time, very polite, neat and put tarps all over the place (not a single speck of paint splatter). They also did a terrific job of cleaning up, and putting furniture back where it belonged. This paint job took two days.
Description of Work: Jack had already replaced windows in our home and did a great job. So, he gave me a quote on some interior painting too. I had already used a couple painters in the past and knew their quotes, so was interested in what Jack would come up with. I was especially concerned with some drywall work that had to be done, especially on our ceiling that had been repaired by other painters twice before, but the cracks would eventually reappear. Jack gave me a fair quote, so we set up a time to start the work.

Response from Cherco Creative Construction
The members are great people to work for. They listen to the alternatives that I propose and together we make a decision that fits their needs and their budget. A couple of the more recent projects that I've done are replacement of an entry door system and insulation upgrades on the entire house. For the door system they had a double entry door system that was original to the home. In addition to being dated and woefully inefficient there were some other issues with the decorative pilasters and pediments as well as the stone sill. I arranged to have a mason I work closely with replace the sill completely. Repairs were made to the pediments and pilasters. The double entry door system was replaced with a single door flanked by a side-lite on each side. The door and side lights have a decorative leaded glass in them and the door itself is quite stylish. The change was dramatic and really added a classy statement to the front of their home. We also installed a new full view storm door that allows the door to be visible from outside and they can also open the door and let all the light and nature from their neighborhood inside on those nice days. The insulation project was more that just adding some blown in insulation to try to warm their home. The home is a Dutch Colonial. This roof system created a challenge because there was significant heat loss through the second floor ceiling into the attic. This in turn warmed the roof line which continues down to the floor line of the first floor. This warming was causing ice damming to occur which led to water damage inside the home. Aggravating this condition was the fact that the heat ducts for the second floor were in the attic leaking more warm air into the attic. There were also many penetrations for electric and fan ducting that were contributing to the poor 'envelope' of the home. In addition to this condition they were always uncomfortable in their family room which was one-story and built over a crawlspace. To solve these issues I brought in my energy management expert and we developed a couple of plans to address the situations. It was agreed that for the main attic space of the home we would remove all of the existing loose-fill insulation by vacuuming it out. This exposed completely the ceiling of the second floor. Open cell spray foam insulation was applied to the entire attic floor/2nd floor ceiling. This provided a thorough seal and barrier between the attic and the home preventing any heat loss from penetrations. Insulation was applied over all the ducting in the attic to minimize any heat loss from them into the attic. Once the 'envelope' integrity was established a loose-fill fiberglass insulation was installed/blown into the attic to the appropriate R value. A bonus was that the existing insulation that was vacuumed from the main attic was re-purposed into the attic of the family room to increase the R value in this area. There wasn't enough to do the job completely but we saved the customer money by re-using this and we saved space in the landfill at the same time....a win-win. To further enhance the comfort in the family room we applied spray foam insulation to the crawlspace walls and the perimeter rim joist for the room. This rim joist/sill plate area is responsible for a significant amount of air leakage in a building. Being able to seal this off and establish a tight envelope is always beneficial to the comfort of a home. By foaming the walls of the crawlspace we were able to reduce the heat loss from the concrete mass of the walls under the family room floor. We also counseled the homeowner to keep the opening from the main basement to the crawlspace open in order for the temperature to balance itself which would increase the floor temperature in this family room. While performing this work we decided to enhance one additional area: the exposed bay under a kitchen bay window arrangement. This had always been a cold area for the homeowners. While the area had fiberglass batt insulation installed it's integrity was compromised frequently by various 'critters' which would seek out the warmth this area presented them. No matter what the homeowner did to deter them they always found a way to the warmth. By applying the spray foam insulation all air leakage was stopped completely, the building enveloped sealed and the source of warmth was eliminated which has meant the critters have to go elsewhere for their warmth. Both projects were very worthwhile and provided true energy savings. In addition the door enhanced the visual appearance of the front of the home and the insulation improved their comfort level during the cold days of winter and they will experience similar comfort enhancement during the hot days of summer that are right around the corner. Also, both projects were eligible for tax credits for energy savings from the Federal Government.

I had several different projects that I wanted an estimate on, that included installing a laminate hardwood floor, patching some drywall in my bathroom, installing new windows, sliding glass door, and some electrical work for the bedrooms. Jack and his associate, an electrician, came out to the house on Saturday and assessed the work that needed to be done, did some measurements, and stated they would write up an estimate and email it to me. I asked Jack to look at a window in my living room that had come off the track and he fixed it for me. Within two days, Monday, I had the estimate for the flooring and the drywall repair, and by Thursday, they were at the house working. Jack and his team did a great job. My floor looks fabulous, and the repaired drywall in the bathroom is perfect. Jack ran into a snag with my home's poor construction and found that the framework in the bathroom was bowed out which was why the drywall in the bathroom was bulging out. He came up with a great solution to fix the framework, and now my wall is nice and smooth. Jack and his team took the extra time to make sure that everything was done right, and looked great. They were also great about cleaning up the mess that was made. I will definitely call Jack when I have more home repairs
Description of Work: I had my carpet removed in the living and dining room, and replaced with laminate hard wood and a large section of drywall replaced in my bathroom.

Jack Cherco and his team designed and built a beautiful deck on our home. We had a general idea of what we wanted, but Jack was able to offer several interesting design elements that made the finish product more appealing and in the end saved us money. I can't say enough good things about working with Jack. He is honest, professional, and a good guy. We have enjoyed our deck for several months now and the quality and unique design stand out. It was money well spent. Jack clearly takes pride in his work.

Jack found some things I did not find when I walked the exterior. While I am always suspect of "add ons", these were legitimate issues I had missed that would likely have cost more in the future. Example: my exterior water spigot needed to be caulked. He noticed that the builder never anchored the valve properly. He took care of that before caulking. He also found a few places where the siding was popped loose, and he tacked that back into place. Very professional from start to finish. It is apparent to me that Jack is one of those rare individuals who still takes a lot of pride in his work.
Description of Work: Caulking and sealing of the exterior of the house. General repairs on some "nuisance items I'd been putting off.
Mr. Cherco came when he said he would, told me the day of the estimate what the time frame would be for all of the installations and repairs, told me what his rate was for the work. He cleaned up after himself and there was no mess. Mr. Cherco gave me a lot of good suggestions of things I could do to conserve heating and cooling costs and explained improvements down the road that could be done to improve the working condition of my home. He also explained how things worked and what my options would be for repairs.
Description of Work: Installed 2 ceiling fans, replaced 2 outside water spigots, installed support to 1st floor sub-floor from basement, replaced broken 1st floor tile, dug out old grouting and replaced grout on 1st floor.

Both Jack and Rick were terrific, reliable and professional. They were punctual, creative in arriving at solutions for a small space and always willing to help with other jobs that were created from the water damage or other jobs that needed to be done around the apartment. We would highly recommend them to anyone looking to make some changes to their bathrooms or kitchens.
Description of Work: Jack and Rick remodeled our bathroom for us. They re-tiled the bathroom, shower and added new fixtures, as well as insuring that the shower didn't leak again.
From the first meeting to the last day on the job, Jack was punctual and professional. He came when he said he would, worked hard when he was on site, clean up every day before he left, and finished the job in the time frame he estimated. Communication was excellent the entire time. Prices for all the work he did was very reasonable and the quality and attention to detail was excellent. We will use Jack again if the opportunity presents itself. I definitely recommend him.
Description of Work: Jack designed, built and installed custom display tables and cabinets in three mobile training trucks. Not your typical job to say the least. He took our rough concepts and designs and turned them into great looking pieces. Everything turned out perfect.

Response from Cherco Creative Construction
This was indeed a unique project but one that I enjoyed tremendously. For those reading this the project was relevant to finish carpentry. As the member mentioned we collaberated on the design, made some modifications and manufactued the components. Additionally we installed the companies products onto these display components. This was a pilot program with a significant overall investment so the attention from management at the highest level as well as the scrutiny to insure the protection of their investment was clear from the beginning. The member and his team were very interactive and went out of their way to insure the success of this project. They truly were a pleasure to work with. At the end of the day this project probably best exemplifies the 'Creative' in my company name, Cherco Creative Construction. We can handle the mainstream as well as the unusual requests. Thanks for the opportunity member.

Jack, the owner was prompt in response and actually came to view the project in advance of his original schedule date and time. He was extremly personable and very professional. It did take some time to get a written estimate which turned out to be almost 3 times higher then the individual that the project was granted to.
Description of Work: Review of work prompt, Estimate took a long time to get for the size of the project.

Response from Cherco Creative Construction
This member was offered a time and material price over a contracted price and preferred to have a contracted price. In an email response to my proposal the member referred to labor estimates based on the erection of a new building which is significantly different scope of work vs taking apart components, rebuilding and restructuring. I informed the customer that I felt the project could possibly be done for less but received no response. It's important to note that this member was satisfied with work quality that was subpar in my opinion based on work he showed me had been done for him by a contractor from another referral organization. At the end of the day, I have never had to apologize for my work quality, cost value, warranty or any aspect of my performance. You can always find someone to do the work for less. In my experience the customer is shopping for 3 things when making a purchase decision: 1. quality 2. service 3. price. It's commonly accepted that you can choose any two of these. If you want quality and service it won't come with the best price. If you choose the best price you will compromise either quality or service. I believe I offer a very balanced value proposition for my customers as evidenced by the comments of those who have actually hired and paid me for services rendered. It's important to note that this member has never hired me and it's not possible to compare what I offered vs what he bought.
My husband and I have a historical 1940 cape cod and it was important to retain the aesthetic quality. I thought it would take a while to find someone who would see my vision as clearly as I did and be able to execute it properly. From beginning to end, Jack was an attentive listener as well as a creative contributor to my vision. He was able to give us an accurate quote and foresee all of the major components, as well as the details that usually derail projects (and budgets). The group of workers he has put together are top notch. The masonry around the door is flawless. The old formed concrete window sill was removed in tact and reinstalled at the bottom of the door so it matches the windows along the back of the house. The door trim molding was cleverly taken from the inside of a closet so all of the molding in the room would still match (other molding was reinstalled in the closet). The deck is amazing. It is a large hourglass extending across the back of the entire house. To say Jack and his crew installed a deck and a door would be amiss. High quality, aesthetically pleasing, beautiful, PERFECT are the words that come to my mind. I would like to note I gave a B on price because it was more expensive than I had anticipated for the job, but it was worth every penny and then some. Thank you Jack! (PS I will post pictures this spring after the snow melts).
Description of Work: Installed a floating, hourglass shaped deck (35x20). Removed existing window and installed paned glass door to deck. Installed stone steps to deck in two separate locations. Moved hose spicket up to accommodate for height of deck and installed gas line for grill. Moved cold air duct work from below old window to accommodate door. Installed crown molding in master bedroom. Lastly, preformed all of the above retaining historic character of the house.
