Description of Work: Lighting in my front yard and walkways. Everything went perfectly. They went over and beyond in order to accommodate me because it was almost the end of their work season. They did not try to oversell me. Recommended just the necessary work. It turned out beautifully.

Thank you for the review and the business! Upon further review, Yes, we did have an oversight on our end while processing your service form in our office and we did miss the notes on the bottom of the service technicians original service form that you requested a quote for some additional work. We truly apologize for our oversight and we have changed our internal procedures to prevent a mistake like this from happening again. We just sent a quote to you for the additional landscape lighting work that you requested. We are so sorry for our oversight and we would greatly appreciate the opportunity to earn an A for the additional work!

Description of Work: The job entailed replacing the existing path lighting and adding an up-light fixture in our front yard. I was very happy with the job. I appreciated the fact that the gentleman that came out to give me a quote was willing to work with my existing wiring and fixtures, adding to it or making changes at a reasonable cost. The job was completed in a timely manner and ran smoothly. I would use them again.

Good job, removed the unreliable 'clips' that caused the problem, & wired the lights directly to the line using wire nuts / tape. They've been working ever since.

I first became aware of The Illuminators from an Angies List coupon last year. I contacted the company and Joe was quick to respond. We ended up not doing the work until this year and the company had kept my information to get started with an estimate. Nick came out to the house and spent 1 hour discussing the options and drawbacks; he is very knowledgeable about outdoor lighting. I liked the products, process, follow-up, night time assessment and maintenance option with this company. The price was fair for the work and so I signed the contract. We had no trouble getting the job scheduled and Nick was here on time and ready to go. In the heat of this summers July, Nick worked non stop for just short of 8 hours and got the job done. He discussed the final installation and told me to contact them after a couple nights and schedule a night assessment if needed. Payment for a job well done. The wires were buried and my lawn and landscaping did not even look like Nick was there. I was not happy with a couple lights at night, so I did not even have to email because in 2 days Joe followed up to ask how everything was and I told him we need a night time adjustment. No problem, in 3-4 days Nick was here at 9:30. Perfection! the job was complete andlooks great. Customer service seems to me to be a big priority to Nick and Joe.
Description of Work: The job was to install landscape lighting to improve the safety on a dark driveway. The upgrade was to tie into the exisiting system with a transformer change and lots more wire.

Nick and his partner showed up on time and started working right away. Installing the post lights required grinding several of the posts so that the light would fit. Nick and his partner went non stop for about 12 hours installing the deck lights, digging trenches for the wiring, running wires in the basement to the circuit box. The finished project was very professional and very neatly done. They cleaned up afterwards and all the neighbors narveled at the finished project. I plan on doing some more outdoor lighting in the future and the Illuminators will be my first choice.
Description of Work: Installed 15 deck post lights. 1 tree light. 1 coach light. New 20 amp ground fault, and 1 15 amp. 1 cable jack. Low voltage transformer, with a solar timer.

I think the fact that Nick specializes in outdoor lighting was what made this all go as smoothly as it did. But he also does indoor lighting as well. We'd had several goes at fixing a time as had a lot of schedule clashes, but he worked diligently to make sure he got here before the ground froze. He and Rich were punctual, explained everything, and I would most definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Our outdoor lighting has been sketchy at best and over the years as we've had electricians over here, they really hadn't been able to get the yard lit up. One said we needed a new generator so we bought it and it didn't solve the problem, one spent 4 hours here and didn't solve it, so when the Angie List Deal of $100 for 2 hours of outdoor lighting specialists, we figured, ok, let's try again. In one hour they had both front and back completely lit. It was due to a short waaaaaaay in the back, and no one, but Nick and Rich, had ever figured it out.

We were very unhappy with them. They lowballed to get us to sign the contract. They didn't listen to one of my specific worries because I wanted to make sure I had enough power on the main box and I wasn't sure they gave us enough lights and they assured us they would come back and fix whatever we needed. When they came back and took all the notes and everything they tripled the price. I was very upset so I wrote a letter and emailed them. They took all my comments and held them against me. They said I didn't want the lights shining in my face from the fence. I told them I was concerned on the height. I had done my own research and found they didn't give me a box where lights could be added as I had requested originally. There were different brothers that I spoke to. We were very disappointed that we were left with a project that was half done and didn't even have a box that would not even accommodate putting higher watt bulbs in all the lights. They offered to come and put an additional box and charge us for the box and the additional time to do it. We thought that wasn't fair because they had originally given me the wrong size box. Both brothers were very nice to work with but they changed midway through the project. They were very deceiving because they shot us one price and then changed it. There was no disclosure upfront that adding more lights would cost more so we felt like we were taken which upset me. The work is still not done. They were very polite until I started calling them and then they wouldn't call me back. They were pleasant to deal with at the beginning. They said that I didn't say I wanted the other things which I always want to know up front. I didn?t get what I wanted. They turned everything around that we had said. They did come when they were hoping to get the project. I don?t know if they realized they lost money on the project and were trying to get their money back. They gave us the wrong box based on the quote they gave us. They kept telling us not to worry about and that they would come back. We've never had this with other contractors that we have dealt with. It was around $1,000 more for the additional box and work. They made it cost prohibitive to complete the project because it was more of the same that we had bought. They had initially said that it doesn?t have to be correct the first time. They said they would come back and light up my yard. The gentlemen told me that there wasn?t a bigger transformer. It was never mentioned to me. They never suggested that there was a larger transformer. When I added lights and wattage, I figured out that my transformer would not even do what I already had. They made a mistake on the addition and never mentioned the transformer. They came back and said they mentioned it, but I did not want it because of the cost which is not the case at all. I never finished the project because of the way the situation was handled. They decided to charge twice as much for the same items.

Response from The Illuminators Outdoor Lighting
This customer was unreasonable and was very difficult to work with and has not been 100% truthful in their review. In no way should we have been given an F rating in all categories if the review was fairly given. This customer (husband and wife) unfortunately kept changing their minds after something would be mutually agreed upon throughout the ongoing project and then expected us to keep making changes for free or below our costs. We did actually make several additional free visits but it got out of hand with their ever changing expectations and changes. What also made this project hard was the husband and wife were not in agreement as to what they even wanted the final outcome to be. The wife especially kept flip-flopping because she couldn't make up her mind at what she liked or didn't like. During the process she even claimed to us that she is very hard to please. We also performed 3 different FREE lighting demos (never had to perform more than 1 for any other customer to date) throughout our dealings with this customer on 3 different occasions so the customer could see exactly what they were going to get. We had to perform 3 demos because they kept changing their minds after the fact and couldn’t make decisions. We did give them an initial price break for the first proposal to help establish our company in their neighborhood but prices in no way were doubled or tripled as they have indicated and exaggerated when they wanted additional lighting after the original installation was completed on a second separate quote. The customer was unwilling to fairly pay for the additional work they wanted completed. They kept trying to take advantage of our kindness, generosity and willingness to please our customers. I have over 50 plus emails back and forth with this customer that document the entire situation. The way it actually ended is we sent our last email response to them and haven’t heard back from them since. The actual work we performed was about 1 1/2 years ago so I assume from their current review that the initial lights that were actually installed are working correctly and the transformer we initially and properly specified is still working or they would have made mention of it in their recent review. The initial project was completed per their initial proposal, on time and to their satisfaction. Their complaint is about a second phase quote for additional lighting that they did not like the pricing. It's unfortunate that difficult customers like this get to make unfair and unreasonable reviews about contractors that really do try to do all they can to make them happy but in the end nothing done will ever really satisfy them. For your reference - I have attached the actual few last emails below to show what we were dealing with and how we were trying to rectify the transformer situation that they were unnecessarily concerned about in their review. From: The Member Date: Sunday, May 2, 2010, 10:15 PM Joe, If you send us a revised contract that includes only the upgrade to the 900 W transformer (model ITRS900W) for a total of $150 less the 10% discount we will proceed with that part of the project so we can add the additional lights when we can afford them. Member RE: Member-Outdoor Lighting Quote#501101-Addition Monday, May 3, 2010 8:46 AM Member, I'll tell you what I'll do; I will mark your job folder with the $150 upgrade for the transformer and give it to you when you are ready to proceed with the other lights. I was giving you the transformer upgrade at my cost. I can't give you a 10% discount on the 900 watt transformer alone and I can't come install it for the $150 alone. I would need to charge you labor of $100/hour plus materials. It will take about 1 hour to swap it out. Having the larger transformer will not be an issue until you are ready to add the additional lights anyway. You can wait on this. Let me know what you would like to do. Best Regards, Joe The Illuminators, Inc. From: The member Date: Monday, May 3, 2010, 4:33 PM Joe, By my calculations the 600 watt transformer that you installed will not accommodate even the fixtures that are already on the ground, or as stated on your contract “ allow some additional light fixtures to be added at a later date.” The member told Nick that she would indeed be adding more fixtures and she definitely agreed with him that the transformer should be sized up to accommodate this. When we consider going up to the maximum wattages that are allowed on the fixtures that you’ve already installed, the math looks like this: 6 up-light fixtures at 50 watts (300) + 6 puck lights at 35 watts(210) + 3 path lights at 35 watts (105)= total of 615 watts x 1.1= 676.50 watts. This is well over what the 600 watt transformer is rated to safely handle so we feel we cannot, as you stated on your email dated 5/3/10, “ wait on this.” So with this said: we feel that the 600 watt transformer installed by your company is not sized correctly and we would like it switched out with the comparable 900 watt (12volt-22volt) transformer (model ITRS900W) to rectify this error. The agreed upon cost should be the same cost you quoted us per your proposal # 501101 dated 5/2/2010 which was $150.00 less 10%, with no additional labor or trip charges charged to us. We feel that this should be taken care of this week, before you go out of town next week. Thanks in advance. Please call to schedule a time to take care of this problem. Member RE: Member-Outdoor Lighting Quote#501101-Addition Wednesday, May 5, 2010 1:14 AM Member, Unfortunately, your calculations and assumptions are incorrect and not valid. The transformer you currently have is fully loadable up to 100% capacity. You can put up to 600 Watts on the transformer. This is not the same type of transformer you would get at a home depot. Those types of transformers should only be used around 80% capacity. This is a contractor grade transformer. Look inside the front cover of the transformer and the manufacturer tag clearly indicates it is 100% loadable. When we specify a transformer for an install, we do so by what the customer indicates at the initial consultation, and in your case the second trip we made to perform the demo, as well as your size backyard and what may be lit in the future. At Nick and the member's initial consultation Nick has indicated that he mentioned a 900 watt transformer possibly being specified but the member indicated that she thought that would be too much and that she would not want or need that many additional lights and she was concerned about the overall cost of the project and the overall brightness. Also, per your first demo(our second trip), when you and I were present and we were determining what the lighting plan was to be, the member indicated that she was not looking to have bright lights because of her overall sensitivity to light, especially the puck lights on the fence. As you recall she was worried about them being too bright and blinding her at 20 watts. She mentioned she may want us to use 10 watt bulbs if and when the puck lights would be installed at that point. We were led to believe you wanted the bulb wattages and outcome to be as you indicated and were shown to you at the initial demo and so you agreed to move ahead with the lighting plan and project and accepted the proposal with a 600 Watt transformer. After the install however things changed and the outdoor lights were not bright enough for the member. First problem is the member was making the determination that they were too dim because she was looking at them from in the house with the lights on and that will cause a different look (due to indoor ambient light) then being outside and viewing the outdoor lights. Regardless of this, we returned a third time to make the necessary bulb adjustments per the member's request and to perform a second demo to show the member what some additional lighting would look like in some of the dark areas of the yard that were not initially illuminated. As it stands now, per our adjustments that you agreed to, the transformer is operating within its normal capacity. 3 path-lights at 20 Watts = 60W, 6 puck-lights at 35W = 210W, 3 up-lights at 20W = 60W, 1 up-light at 35W, 2 up-lights at 50W = 100W. The current total is 465 Watts. You still have room to add some additional lights as it states in the initial proposal. You do not need to worry about the transformer not operating safely and properly at this point. So again, there is no need at this point to install a 900 Watt transformer with the current lighting (including bulb adjustments) that you have and the initial lighting design that you agreed to. No mistakes were made and if you would still like to go ahead and upsize the transformer because you can't afford to install the additional lighting at this time the cost is $150 for the transformer plus the $100/per hour installation charge. Transformer will take approximately 1 hour to install. Please realize that we are being generous because the 600 watt transformer that we would remove would then be considered used and can't be sold as new again. This is the first time we have ever come across this issue in all the years we have been in business. We could actually quote you the entire cost of a 900 Watt up-sized transformer. We are trying to be as fair as possible and have done everything we possibly can to make you happy and save you money. Hope this makes sense and you can understand our position. One last comment - it does not make sense why you would need or want the up-sized 900 Watt transformer at this point if you are not moving ahead with the additional lighting. If you want the up-sized transformer because you want to add the additional lighting on your own that is not a problem with us. If this isn't the reason, then again you don't need to worry because the current transformer is working properly and within the safe parameters it was designed to handle. Best regards, Joe The Illuminators, Inc.

I initially called the company to see if they deal with gas lamp posts. They informed me that they do not but have converted many from gas to electric. I had them come out to provide a quote for the conversion. The initial contact went well and they were very flexible with scheduling for initial consultation. They even came out on a Sunday to look over the job. Even the person that came out to do the initial consultation was very nice and thorough with explaining different options. At the consultation I was provided a rough estimate for the number of hours and cost of materials. I was told I would receive a more accurate and final quote in a about a day. 4-5 days after not receiving the quote I contacted them to make sure the quote had not been lost and they said they were pulling together the material list and would get the quote to me by end of day. They did provide they quote that day but it was not what I expected. Their final quote was 46% higher than the rough estimate I was given at the consultation (didn't they tell me they've done this before?). Also the only details that were provided on the quote was one line item LABOR AND MATERIALS. We emailed back and forth as I was looking for further explanation of the 46% increase. Each time I requested a better breakdown of the labor and materials. They would not provide me with any details. The only responses I received were 1. The materials list is too long to provide 2. If you want quality it costs money 3. The original estimator should not have provided me with a rough estimate because he does not write the quotes thats the job of the sales person. 4. Their final price is competitive Now mind you I am not one to shy away from paying for quality work. As a customer I just wanted to know where my money was being spent. I was a little confused as to how they were able to put together a detailed list of materials when no measurements were ever taken. To be honest I probably would have paid the final quote number had they been willing to explain and roughly break down the labor time and some of the more costly materials. After 3 emails back and forth I decided it was enough and I was going to find someone else to do the job.
Description of Work: Asked company to come out to replace an existing lamp post in front yard. The original lamp was gas and they came out to provide a quote to convert the lamp to electric.

Member unfortunately is not 100% truthful in his review. Member was informed by the designer that the project could take up to APPROXIMATELY $650 IN LABOR (NOT INCLUDING MATERIALS) but that it was only an initial guess because a final quote with actual labor and materials would be provided by email at a later date. Member's project had an extra-long materials list that needed to be costed out since it was going to be a complete electrical conversion from a gas post light. This is not a simple install as a whole new electrical circuit needed to be run as well as installing the post light itself in concrete. Final quote ended up being $950 total for labor and materials. Customer is complaining about a 46% increase ($300 difference) from what the designer initially told him just the LABOR ONLY might cost (approximately $650). When the member received the actual written quote the member complained that the designer said it would only be around $650 and he was shocked when he received the final quote for $950 (46% higher = $300 difference). He was informed we could not do the project for $650 or even close to it and still make a reasonable profit. Again member was informed that the initial designer does not give out final quotes and any pricing discussed during the initial consultation was only approximations and initial guesses. Unfortunately the member did not want to proceed with our company for the work because the $300 was too much of a difference in his mind. We provided our best price possible for this particular project. In this case the member was quite unreasonable with his complaint, explanations and expectations. At the time this member was complaining about our price he indicated that he had no other quotes to compare to and he would have to seek other contractors on Angie's List. In my opinion it doesn't make sense to complain if you don't have other quotes to compare to in the first place. How does he know other contractors won’t quote the same price and in the same way? We are a top rated and highly reputable outdoor lighting company in the Chicagoland area as our reviews and actual customers indicate. We provide excellent customer service and workmanship as our A rated reviews indicate from actual work performed. It is unfortunate that this member is even allowed to post this unnecessary and unfounded review in the first place since we were not able to perform the work for the price HE wanted to pay. PLEASE NOTE – WE DID NOT PROVIDE ANY WORK FOR THIS MEMBER. THE MEMBER’S WHOLE REVIEW IS SOLEY BASED ON HIM NOT LIKING OUR WRITTEN QUOTE AND ULTIMATELY OUR INABILITY TO PERFORM THE WORK AT HIS PRICE. BY THE MEMBER’S OWN ADDMISSION AND REVIEW HE WAS PLEASED WITH THE DESIGNER AND CUSTOMER SERVICE PROVIDED UP UNTIL HE RECEIVED OUR WRITTEN QUOTE.

The technician did a perfect job and got it all done in just two hours. He checked each of the 3 systems' fixtures--20 in all--to see if they were getting power, rewired them when necessary, checked the transformers, replaced burned-out bulbs, removed all the unreliable Malibu connectors and hard wired each connection, and even re-staked every light so they are straight (not an easy task in rock-hard sand along the brick walk in the front yard). He didn't try to sell me an expensive replacement transformer for the one (out of three) that wasn't working after he asked if I was comfortable replacing the box myself with one from Home Depot, which I am. I couldn't be more pleased.
Description of Work: They repaired three areas of outdoor landscape lighting.

My wife and I purchased our first home which had a Landscape Lighting system that lights up the house, driveway, and pathways. We did not know anything out how to maintain or repair anything related to this. We reached out to several folks and the Illuminators responded immediately with interest and desire to help us out. They came out and fixed lights that had shorted out over the years, changed bulbs, and educated us on the system. They even used bulbs that we had already in our possession left by the previous owners which saved us $ for this work. They were professional and helpful from the beginning and we will be using them for any future work related to this system. Joe and Nick both were great to work with.
Description of Work: We were looking for someone to assess and maintain our landscape lighting which is around our new and first home. The Illuminators came out and were very helpful in fixing items, educating us, and building a business relationship for future work.

First let me say, The Illuminators Outdoor Lighting is a very professional and pleasant company to work with. Initially, I met with my lighting designer, Nick, and together we formulated a unique lighting design for my home and landscaping. Nick was really easy to work with and offered many great suggestions that I did not think about before our consultation. It was refreshing to work with a contractor that was not pushy and listened to what I had to say. Once I accepted the proposal it was about a week and Nick was back to install the lights and perform the work. He and his crew did a great job not to damage any of my existing landscaping (as this was a concern I voiced to him before they started) while they were installing the wiring and lights. When they were done I couldn't even tell where they had put the wires. I was totally amazed! It was if the lights had been installed for years. Once they were finished installing the outdoor lighting The Illuminators did some other electrical work like replace various interior and exterior light fixtures and dimmers for me. This was an added bonus since I didn't have to find a separate contractor to perform this service. Finally the night came and I was able to view my new lighting. In one word - breathtaking!!! Before installing the lighting my house was lost in the dark but now I am the envy of the neighborhood at night. The lighting provides a warm and inviting feeling. Also, I am now able to navigate my sidewalks and pathways safely and entertain in my back yard in the evening. I definitely made the right choice when I chose The Illuminators Outdoor Lighting!!!! Great Job Guys!!!
