I knew that they stood behind their product and I knew their reputation. I found the carpet that I liked. I had a problem with the carpeting that was their fault. It was a little snag. It was a looped Berber sort of wool carpet and they sent out someone immediately, fixed it and you can't even see where there was a problem. They held the carpet till I was ready to put it in. They did a beautiful job. They were very efficient and I was very happy with them. It was all excellent. Every thing about the experience was very good.

I worked with an exceptional saleswoman. Unfortunately, the installers weren’t as careful as I’d hoped, and the carpet required attention practically immediately. They did rectify the situation by replacing an area of the carpet, but it was a bit of a struggle to get them to do that.

It was not a positive experience. They didn’t tell me until 5:00 that they wouldn’t be able to finish the job. They couldn’t do a part of the job that they said they were going to do so I had to bring in my own person. I had to deal with a customer service person and she was not friendly or helpful. Her voicemail alone is rude and that is a pretty good indication for how unhelpful she is. It isn’t even done and they kept asking me to pay my balance during all of this. I ended up paying the balance because I don’t want to fight with them. I used them years ago and it was wonderful, but they have gone completely downhill. I would not use them again in the future.

Response from Lewis Floor & Home
Lewis Floor and Home is a family owned business that has built its reputation on our excellent customer service. We are truly sorry the member had a negative experience with LF&H. When she contracted us to do the job we sent out our estimator to diagram the room and explain to her about the installation of the heated floor mats she was also having us install. At that time we clearly explained what Lewis was going to do and what she was responsible for. That included her being responsible to use a licensed electrician to hook up the thermostat and wiring. When we did our part, which was putting down the mats and the carpeting, it was clear that her electrician was not sure how to handle his part of the job. It took 2-3 hours of discussion about the installation on his part and even then her electrician couldn’t figure out what to do. This is why the job took more than one day. In fact we waited more than 4 weeks for her to have us return to finish the carpeting. I truly feel we did our part prior to installation, preparing the customer but she didn't take our advice and have the most qualified electrician available to complete the project, as that was the sole reason that the installation was not completed in a more timely manner, thus resulting in her having a negative experience.

They were great, from the selection process through installation. The tile installer correctly put in a sub-floor under the new tiles (which wasn't done before), and everything looks great.

We purchased expensive wool carpeting on the advice of the sales person who said it would last much longer in a high traffic location such as the only stairway to the second floor. After about 18 months it was worn through to the backing in several spots. We had their representative come out to look at it. He told us, and I am not making this up, "You must be walking on it wrong." They refused to replace it. I wouldn't patronize this place again if the carpeting was free.

Lewis Floor and Home knows the importance of customer service and how it directly affects business. We pride ourselves with the history we have with satisfied customers and our ability to react and work with customers who do not have a positive experience with Lewis. Which is why I was suprised to hear how unhappy a customer is, 10 years after their installation. If a customer made an inappropriate floor selection, for whatever reason, it is our policy then and now to work towards a solution. It is not in our favor to have an unhappy customer unless their expectations are totally unreasonable. Carpet does not wear out in 18 months, under normal use. If something unusual occurs, such as premature wear, we hire an independent inspection company and have them determine the cause. We would never leave an issue unreasolved. We have no record of any such inspection. The customer claims coming into the store three times to complain and nothing was done. Again, we have no record of this. We did find record of tile purchase two years after their carpet. I was suprised to see that. In conclusion, we at Lewis Floor and Home are sorry this customer did not have a positive experience at our store.

The sales people in the store were helpful (we used the Lincoln Park store on Fullerton), and throughout the process they were accessible via phone and e-mail, which was nice. We were able to order several samples of carpet, which were sent to our house free of charge. They were able to store our carpet for a while after it came in (since our construction in our new house was delayed a little bit), and delivery scheduling did not require much advance notice, which was nice. AFter installation, we noticed that the carpet at the edge of the stairs was not tacked down, and when we called, they came out within a couple of days to fix it. So far, we are very happy with our carpet.

The reason that I went there was for a special padding for the carpet. I had found what I wanted carpet wise at another store but they did not offer the carpet pad I wanted. Sheila was doing a price match of another stores carpet price. To get that price she insisted that I come in and stand on my head or that I bring in someone to do this for me because that was the current promotion. I had all ready been there several times and it was a long hall to do so but this did not seem to matter. I placed the order and when the carpet and padding showed up it was the wrong pad. The installers did go back to get the right one and I had to pay an extra $100. I did have words with the manager Sharon who has told me that I was at fault for the wrong merchandise. I drove past many other carpet stores on my 45-minute drive in each direction for the carpet pad that I wanted. It is like the shock absorber for the car. If you put Chevy shocks on a Cadillac it will handle like a Chevy but if you put premium shocks on a Chevy it will handle much better. I have been doing interior design since 1988 and I used to work in a store that also sold carpeting. I knew what I wanted and signed for an order but I forgot to demand that they place the brand name of products on the order and not what they refer to them as. This is their loophole for why I am unhappy. I feel I need to forewarn everyone that retail stores get different names for items so you can not comparison shop. I still do not have the exact pad I wanted but it is close and I am so sick and tired of the store that at this point and just feel everyone needs to be warned buyer beware.
Description of Work: I ordered carpet and padding from Sheila and had it installed.

Response from Lewis Floor & Home
Lewis Floor and Home has been in business since 1955 and has built its reputation on Customer Service. I am very sorry that the member is upset and doesn't feel we fulfilled our end of the contract and more. When he came into the store he requested a product that we do not stock. We called the company representative and had samples brought in for him to choose from. Next we set up a measure of the area to be carpeted. At that time a sheet is filled out with all the specifications such as width of carpet, fibre content and choice of pad. That is when he would have been asked directly if he wanted to pay for the upgraded pad. At that time he never agreed to the upgrade. This is the issue he is upset about. He never mentioned it again until the day of the installation. The installer arrived at his home, on time and he said we were not giving him what he wanted. He called the store and I told him I would have the installer come back to Northbrook and pick up the pad he wanted but it was an upgrade and he need to pay for it. He agreed to that but is still upset. In summary he ended up getting exactly what he wanted. He also got a discount from our promotion that was already expired. We at Lewis Floor and Home tried very hard to make him happy with his purchase.

It went great. We walked through the door and a sales rep was immediately there to assist. Showed us where they had in stock tile and where the special order tile was. We chose a few designs and we very happy with the price. The only bummer was that they we had to take it home ourselves as opposed to having it delivered.
Description of Work: We are completely re doing 3 of our bathrooms and were looking for porcelain tile. They had great prices on instock tiles. They also had a sale going on now, so we saved big. We purchased 340 sq ft of porcelain tile. Different sizes and colors.

Carpet- they pulled some of the baseboard away from the wall, it had crush marks all over, one corner was all puffed up & it had a quarter size hole-the loops were torn. Eventually after complaining they gave us $100 for trim (fair). They fixed the hole & in 2 days they said they'd fix the crush marks. They keep blaming me for not being available. They only call from their truck- they don't get out & ring the bell- so they leave. Who believes this? They put in the wrong blinds & one wasn't level. Ralph knew he was matching the other blinds we had from them. The guy who measured saw our whole house with the blinds from them, knew to match them & even had to order a replacement for one of them. I was played off 1 to another. I was blamed because they didn't know the way the blinds were supposed to close (how could you order without that info?) As above, supposedly people came to re-level blinds-they wouldn't ring the bell so they left. I'm no longer a longtime customer!!!

CRUSH MARKS ARE COMMON IN NEW CARPET AND WILL NATURALLY VACUUM OUT SOON AFTER THE INSTALLATION. THIS WASN'T SATISFACTORY FOR THE CUSTOMER SO WE HAD IT PROFESSIONALLY STEAMED. THE HOLES IN THE CARPET THAT THE CUSTOMER IS REFERRING TO ARE ISSUES FROM HIS FLOOR BEING UNEVEN. WE WERE HAPPY TO CORRECT THAT TOO. AS FOR THE WINDOW BLINDS, WE ORDERED EXACTLY WHAT THE CUSTOMER REQUESTED AND SIGNED OFF ON. OUR POLICY IS TO CALL THE CUSTOMER THE MORNING OF THE SERVICE. WE VERIFY ADDRESS AND THE WORK ORDER AS WELL AS THE TIME. IF THE CUSTOMER IS EXPECTING A SERVICE CALL OR INSTALLATION, WHY WOULDN'T THEY ANSWER THEIR PHONE? DUE TO ISSUES THAT THE CUSTOMER HAD WITH LEWIS FLOOR AND HOME, I CREDIT HIM $100.00 IN GOOD FAITH. I DO NOT THINK LEWIS FLOOR AND HOME DID ANYTHING WRONG TO MAKE THIS CUSTOMER SO UNHAPPY.

Dave was punctual, courteous, and accurate when he gave me his estimate. Lewis Carpet used a subcontractor for the removal of the old floor and the installation of the new one. While I wasn't expecting a subcontractor, I was pleased with their work. They were courteous, professional, hard-working, and punctual. They cleaned up after themselves throughout the job, and cleaned the space thoroughly after the job. They actually finished the job a day ahead of schedule! The quality of the work was excellent. They were careful with my furniture when they moved it out of the way and replaced it to its original position. I am highly satisfied with the job completed, and would recommend them for the installation of Kahrs flooring.

We were hesitant to shop for tile at Lewis because of a bad experience with carpet installation performed by them a few years ago. However, we remember liking their selection and decided to give them another chance. Our experience this time was mixed. We quickly found tile we were interested in purchasing and took home some samples. The next day we returned to purchase the tile and found that the salesman we had worked with was no longer working there. Furthermore, some of the information he had given us was incorrect! After much confusion, frustration, and finally canceling part of our order, we were fortunately put in touch with Susie who is their tile buyer. She went out of her way to give us the information we needed, provide us quickly with a special sample, and finally expedited our final order so our contractor could make up time from the delay. She was very professional and helpful and turned this into a positive experience.
