It was a wonderful experience. We were the first call of the day and he came early. He was very professional and even pointed out to us that our separate dehumidifier had a recall notice on it. He checked out the two furnaces, made sure we installed the filters correctly, serviced the humidifiers, and he put new batteries in our thermostats (if we we go on vacation in winter, we won't have to worry about the batteries failing, the furnace not working and then coming home to burst pipes). He went above and beyond what we expected.
Description of Work: They serviced two furnaces and two humidifiers.

I have been a customer of Ravinia Plumbing & Heating for about 11 years and a member of their Home Care Club for much of that period, which is supposed to assure prompt attention and service in exchange for my loyalty to them for annual service. For many years, this was provided without fail. However, in recent years service levels have been inconsistent and prompt service has rapidly declined. On this occasion, our hot water heater failed this past Saturday morning, so I called Ravinia at 7:15am. The answering service said they would page a technician and I would hear from them shortly. Thirty minutes later, I called again to say I hadn't heard. She said she would page them again. By 8:15am, I had still not received a call, so decided to try another company. The other company (Pasquesi) answered and had a technician contact me within a few minutes. He arrived less than 15 minutes later, explained the problem, relit the pilot light to solve our problem temporarily, and said to call them Monday morning to schedule replacement of the hot water heater. I called at 7:00am Monday, had a crew here by 8:45am and the new hot water heater is installed. Meanwhile, I have still not heard from Ravinia. And they will not hear from me again either.
Description of Work: Did to return my calls at all when my hot water heater failed.

Unfortunately our after-hours answering service failed to properly send us either of this customer’s messages. When our dispatcher arrived Monday morning and went through the log of after-hours calls from our answering service, the log showed that the customer called us at 7:49 am on Saturday but the call was not logged until Sunday which we received Monday morning. We spoke with the customer on Monday and apologized for the error. I had our phone service provider pull the phone records to determine the exact time the calls were placed and forwarded that information to the manager of our answering service. The manager called me back a few days later and told me that they did in fact receive the calls into their call center, they identified an error in their software program which failed to send a text message of each call. Additionally, the system also failed to send us record of either Saturday call on Saturday morning. Oddly enough, we received 12 messages before this customers two calls and one after, all of which we received and handled properly. It is worth noting that we have been using this answering service for about 4 years and have never received a complaint from a customer due to a missed call. I do feel that the grades provided are a bit harsh and most do not even apply as we had no idea that this customer called for emergency service until Monday morning and obviously we had no control over the failure of our answering service.

AWFUL OWNER!! Although I was warned about Ravinia Plumbing when I moved to the Chicago area three years ago, I was in a bind and needed a plumber quickly. Ravinia was available and I used them - signed up for a contract and have had them to my house about 2-3 times/year since. I had always felt that the technicians were professional but that the prices were way too high. Six months ago Ravinia came to fix my humidifiers that were leaking water around the furnaces. I was told that the drain tubes needed to be replaced. I agreed to it and they were fixed. Two days later my entire basement was completely flooded with about 4 inches of water. Over 24 hours later (due to freezing temperatures and a busy schedule for Ravinia) a technician was able to come to the house. He said that the previous technician knocked debris into the drainage pipe of the humidifier, which caused it to back up and flood my basement. The technician even said "Boy...I'm glad it wasn't me that made the mistake!" I realize mistakes happen and I just wanted Ravinia to take care of the issue. My kids toys were sitting in this water (many of them ruined) not to mention boxes (containing electrical items) were soaked through as well. The technician told me Ravinia would send Rainbow (a carpet cleaning/drying service) to lift my carpets, dry the basement and replace the carpets. I called the manager of Ravinia to ensure that I would not be paying for Rainbow's service. I did not receive a call-back. A day later I called again, saying I would really like to speak with someone about this. Again, no call back. The third time I left a message for the owner of the company (who always seemed to be "in meetings" when I'd call) that it would be in his best interest to use some business ethic and call his customer back. When he finally called, he said he wasn't certain that Ravinia caused the problem that caused the back-up. I told him his technician was certain about it and that it was too much of a coincidence that two days prior to the problem, they "fixed" my humidifier. After a long discussion, he agreed to pay for Rainbow's services but refused to acknowledge that I was owed anything for the toys and electrical items. I was also concerned about mold in the walls. He said our conversation was over and that he is not responsible for a mold check in 6 months. I hadn't needed a plumber since that incident but yesterday I called Ravinia about my kitchen sink being clogged and I was told that there is a "Do Not Service" note on my account! Ravinia refuses to service my house!! I will gladly switch to another plumbing service after my experience with the owner. DO NOT USE THEM. I was told they are crooks - and they are!!
Description of Work: The most recent service call was to fix the leaking humidifiers by my furnaces.

Response from Ravinia Plumbing, Sewer, Heating & Electric
The above review is full of inaccuracies. We provided preventative maintenance to the furnaces on 11/26/14 and told the customer in writing that they couldn’t use the basement humidifier until an internal component (a drain tube) was fixed. The customer waited until January to call us back out for the work, which we completed on 1/15/14. We replaced the humidifier part and verified that the humidifier was operating and draining properly. About two days later the customer discovered water in the basement. She called us at 6:30 at night and we had a technician at her house within 45 minutes. We discovered that the drain line serving the furnace and humidifiers was clogged about 15 feet from the furnace. It is unfortunate that the drain stopped up only 2 days after we were there but it was draining when we left. We had a national restoration company go to the house the very next morning who cleaned up the water. The customer lied stating that there was 4” of water on the floor. In reality there was enough water to get the carpeting wet. The disaster restoration company extracted the water and cleaned the carpeting. The customer told us over the phone that her entertainment system was damaged due to the flooding and that her kids toys were under water. The disaster restoration company, at our request, provided us several pictures showing that the water would have had to be several FEET deep before it could reach any equipment, additionally none of the toys were damaged. Regarding her inaccurate mold comment, you cannot have mold damage in a matter of hours due to flooding, it takes at least 72 hours (3 days) for mold to start to grow. The disaster restoration company would not leave a structure without ensuring that everything had been dried properly or they would be liable for their mistake. We refused to service this customer in the future due to the way she belittled our employees and lied about the amount of damage. While I am sorry that the drain line stopped up, we can’t prevent that sort of thing from happening. Regardless, we still covered the entire cost of restoration. This review was written because she was mad that we wouldn’t provide her with service in the future. If she truly believed we were a bunch of crooks, why did she call us in August of 2014 for a stopped up kitchen sink instead of someone else?

It was easy to schedule the service call and the plumber came on time. He identified the problem, had the parts that he needed and repaired it quickly. He explained what might have caused the problem, what he had to fix and how to maintain the faucet in the future. Plumber was professional and friendly. We have used Ravinia Plumbing for several projects in the past (for everything from sump pumps to toilet repairs and replacing fixtures) and will use them in the future.

I believe this is an incorrect review, we are located in Illinois, not Florida. Our phone system logs every incoming and outgoing call and our afterhours answering service logs every incoming call. Neither our company nor our answering service received any incoming calls from an area code outside our service area on that service date.

We had used Mahoney plumbing in the past for new water heaters so we called them when our air conditioners needed maintenance. It took the tech 4 hours (at $200/hr) to diagnose a faulty compressor. I was also charged for maintenance on the units at $100/unit (2 units). This was after I was stood up twice (2 times) in one week by the company when they promised to send someone out and never did. I didn't even receive a phone call - I had to call and ask if anyone was still coming. I later took a look at the outside units to find that no maintenance was done or any leaves cleaned out of the outside units. The inside filters were not cleaned nor were the humidifiers "summerized" from winter. For what was I charged? I tried 4 different times to speak with an office manager about the situation and my calls were never returned. When I finally did speak with him, he told me he would look into it and call me back. That was a month ago. Really disappointing...

They were okay. They were a little on the expensive side. But they seem to charge a lot for what they did. They broke something in my property accidentally while they were in my house. They did compensate me for it. So they were okay in that way. He accused me of not being truthful when I told him that the glasses that he broke were crystal.

Response from Ravinia Plumbing, Sewer, Heating & Electric
The repair was expensive because it was time consuming. We were at the house most of the day. The leak was coming from inside a wall and we had to open more than one area to find the leak, then open the section larger to gain access to the deteriorated piping so we could cut out the bad piping and replace with new. Unfortunately the only way to cut out the old steel piping was with a sawzall which does create some amount of vibration. We were unaware that there were glasses hanging on the other side of a wall and about 5 or 6 broke. Our plumber brought the damage to the attention of the customer. The customer claimed that the glasses were crystal. Our technician’s wife has worked in a factory manufacturing crystal for over 20 years so he knows the difference between crystal and glass. The customer looked up the glasses online with the technician in his presence and found the glasses were available for purchase for about $6.00 each. Never the less, our service manager did not question what was or was not broken, or the value of the glasses. We asked him for the value of what was broken. He told us $250.00 so we paid him $250.00.

A bit strange. We contacted Ravinia for a quote on some new boiler and radiator work and also asked for recommendations on the boiler we had installed by their competitor just a few months ago. Ravinia sent another contractor, Mahoney Plumbing, whom I had not vetted. We reviewed the requested work. Then Mahoney wrote his quote using dictation software, and quite a bit got lost in translation. And the recommendation on the boiler -- was not addressed at all. Needless to say, we did not send any work to Ravinia or Mahoney.

Response from Ravinia Plumbing, Sewer, Heating & Electric
It seems that there were several miscommunications, all of which were minor to say the least. To start, Ravinia Plumbing & Heating and Mahoney Plumbing had merged well over a year prior to this request for service. When Dan Mahoney arrived he explained to the customer that our companies had merged or that Mahoney was a division. Dan could not remember the exact working. Mahoney is not a subcontractor as the customer incorrectly stated. More importantly, I as the owner vetted Mahoney Plumbing long before this encounter. If Dan Mahoney or any of the employees of Mahoney Plumbing did not know what they were doing, they would not be in my employ. While the original request of proper boiler sizing was made over the phone, once on site, more time was spent with the customer requesting options to re-pipe the boiler system to allow for separate zoning. While there, Dan Mahoney explained that he would send a quote for the zoning work and would have to follow-up later regarding the boiler sizing along with a problem he found with the boiler control as that would require a call to the controller manufacturer. The original on site visit was on 2/13/14 at 3:30 pm. Dan provided a written quote for the zoning work the very next day, on 2/14/14 at 1:47 pm. Admittedly Dan should have done a better job proof reading the quote as it contained several dictation errors. The customer sent a follow-up email on Sunday 2/16/14 at 10:47 pm with several questions related to the quote along with the original question related to the boiler being properly sized. Dan heard back from the control manufacturer and answered all of the customer's questions the next business day, 2/17/14 at 3:10 pm, in writing. Dan explained that the boiler was properly sized and that the manufacturer felt there was a problem with the controller or its programming but would not be able to tell until a technician was onsite and reviewed the controller operation with the manufacturer's technical support. The customer never responded to our information. I can only assume that the customer wanted us to find a problem with the boiler bring improperly sized as the reason for the higher-than-average heating bills. While the problem we found with the controller would have contributed to higher heating bills, the high heating bills were more than likely due to a combination of a rate increase from North Shore Gas along with the coldest average winter temperatures in almost 30 years, especially when compared to the last two mild winters. Needless to say I believe the grades provided by this customer were not deserved.

We were very happy with this company. We had a couple of clogged drains and a bathtub temp gauge that needed fixing. I like the fact that the company charge per job rather than an hourly rate but that backfired for us as we ended up paying over $300 for about an hour's work. Definitely pricey. Having said that, you do get what you pay for. The process of making the appointment was quick and easy, the guy who came over was professional and friendly. He even put on extra shoe covers just to ensure nothing leaked through (there was a lot of snow that day). He looked at the issues, quoted the price, did the work and was gone in about an hour total. It was efficient, easy, convenient and, most importantly, the issues were fixed. Even though the price was high, I would still use this company again, purely because of how quick and painless it was.

Ravinia was not the cheapest bid on the job. It was in line however with other bids by plumbing companies that we were familiar with. We accepted Ravinia's bid based upon the quality of the work they had done earlier in the year when installing a new water heater. The work they performed on our project was exceptionally well done by a very professional crew and management. Our stack and vents were completely rerouted and largely replaced. The hot and cold water as well as the heating piping was worked on as part of the job. The work involved interfacing with our contractor and working around his schedule at times. Everyone at Ravinia we have come in contact with has been courteous, knowledgeable, and above all professional. Appointments were always kept and the supervisory staff kept in touch with frequent visits to ensure that the work was done well. As part of the job, we also needed work on our heating system to remove radiators and, in one instance replace a baseboard unit with a slimline radiator. This work too was well done. The new radiator was properly sized to heat the room in question and was carefully installed, as was the radiator that was removed during construction. They even went so far as to make sure that the system was fully bled of air and valves adjusted to balance heat. In my experience this is more the exception that the rule. Ravinia also rerouted gas lines to accommodate an unanticipated relocation of the washer/dryer and to supply our new gas stove and installed a new set and plumbed a new set tub to pass clearance restrictions in the electrical code. This work ws not part of the original bid but was bid fairly as an add on. In all cases Ravinia personnel cleaned up after themselves and were careful during the work to disrupt things a little as possible. This was not an easy job. Ravinia has always been willing to look for creative solutions to some very tricky problems. They worked around structure and electric problems that made the job difficult. In short I cannot say enough good about the work that Ravinia has done. Based upon our experience, we have decided to move all our plumbing and heating work to Ravinia in the future. We could not be more pleased with their work.
Description of Work: Ravinia worked with us in a major kitchen and Bathroom renovation that required relocating the majority of the plumbing, heating work and gas line relocation and additions in our nearly 100 year old house.

With a house as old as mine I know that every repair is going to be more expensive if the item in question can be repaired at all. This was the case with the shower valve, I was lucky that Ravinia plumbing had a part that had not been manufactured in 20 years and a tech who was experience enough to have seen my type of valve before! That's why I depend on them and will continue to do so. Their service can't be beat.
