Description of Work: Furnace went out during a very cold day. The furnace is 27 years old and the technician was able to get it started again. He informed me that the fix was a temporary one and in a few days it did go out again. The cost of the repair was on the higher side, but his knowledge of an old system was well worth the cost. Overall I gave them a b rating as their quotes for a new furnace/ac were much much higher than other competitors.

I ripped up their card.
Description of Work: We bought a new fridge that needed the water line connected to the ice maker, so we asked them to perform that task. The guy they sent gave us an estimate of $1080 !!!!!! To hook up the ice maker!! We had to pay him $180 for his time for that insane nonsense and sent him away. I called a handyman (whose name I had gotten from Angie's list, excellent guy) and he did it for $80. It was mind-boggling.

Response from Ravinia Plumbing, Sewer, Heating & Electric
If you are going to write a review, at least have the common courtesy to fill the above work description with the truth. Here is what actually transpired. The customer had a water filter system installed in the basement about 50’ away from the kitchen area that they wanted to eliminate. The existing water line was run in plastic tubing and branched off to a dispenser head at the kitchen sink and to the refrigerator. The customer was not home during our work so we had to do everything over the phone. The work that we actually quoted was: - $240.00 to turn off the water to the house and cut into the copper water lines under the sink and install a tee fitting to allow for the installation of separate isolation emergency shutoff valves. Turn the water back on to the house, purge air from the piping and test our connections for leaks. This work was declined. - $157.45 to install two new shutoff valves under the kitchen sink, onto the new copper water piping installed in the description above. One valve would supply a new water filter and one valve would supply the kitchen faucet. This is the recommended installation by code because if there is ever a problem with either the faucet or the filter you can turn off each one independently instead of having to turn both of them off until a repair is made. This work was declined. - $278.79 to drill holes through the backs of several cabinets and then install a new copper water line from the new shutoff valve through the cabinets, to the refrigerator. This work was declined. - $347.86 to provide a whole new filter system with filter media, mount the new filter system under the kitchen cabinet, connect the filter to the new water piping installed above, purge the new filter system, and remove and dispose of the old filter system. This work was declined. - $180.00 to look at the current system, quote a proper installation as described above and instead, disconnect the old system, re-connect the existing plastic tubing to the water supply and test the connections for leaks. This work was accepted. As anyone can plainly see, the customer’s description of quoting $1,080.00 to hook up an icemaker is anything but the truth.

Description of Work: I had a leaky basement faucet as well as some banging pipes that surfaced with a new H.E. washer. They installed some devices to eliminate the bang and were able to fix the faucet. They were very professional, prompt and did good work. However, they were very pricy. They quoted me over $200 to fix one side of a laundry tub faucet that just needed the internals adjusted. It couldn't have taken more than 5 minutes to fix and didn't require any parts. That equates to $2,400 an hour in labor costs. The parts and labor for the pipes cost less. I felt it was a bit steep, but needed the work done. I would use them again, but I would be very selective on what work is performed.

Description of Work: Ravinia was very responsive to my call about our furnace not working and came out immediately which was great. However, it was a pilot light that was out and they charged $300 for this due to labor. I had to split the cost with our landlord b/c it was so outrageous.

The description of our work performed is inaccurate. We were called out because the furnace was not working. We found that the pilot assembly had failed but more importantly, we found a large open crack in the heat exchanger of the furnace which is a safety issue. If the furnace started to produce carbon monoxide it could endanger the lives of the inhabitants. We had to turn off the furnace. Additionally, the total invoice for diagnosis was $270.00, not $300.00

Response from Ravinia Plumbing, Sewer, Heating & Electric
There are several inaccuracies associated with the statements made by the member which I surmise are due to the fact that he wrote this review over 9 months after the date of service. First let me explain that the member was quoted a $59.00 service charge by our customer service representative to get our technician to his residence, diagnose the problem, and quote a repair price. Upon arrival our technician diagnosed the problem, provided a written quote including the service charge which the member approved prior to the start of our work. Our technician successfully rodded open the sewer by removing heavy roots and discovered a damaged area of sewer pipe located under a concrete stoop. The sewer was flowing fine at that time and the break would not cause an immediate problem but was in need of repair. Our technician wrote up an estimate on the same invoice to perform the repair. The member made the statement that we “tried to sell me a big job with no other solutions offered.” We did nothing of the sort. We found a problem, pointed out the problem to the customer, and provided him with a price to repair the line. What kind of company would we be if we found a problem and didn’t tell the customer? Regarding his statement about other solutions, unfortunately there is only one solution because there is only one way to repair the line properly. The member also claims that he had to call us two times to resolve his complaint. Our work was performed on Thursday 6/30/2011. The member called our office for further explanation and to complain about the price on Monday 7/4/2011. Our manager told the member that it would take us a day or two to pull the invoice and talk with the service technician. We called and left a message for the customer the very next day on Tuesday 7/5/2011. The member returned our call on Thursday 7/7/2011 where he accepted a partial refund. The member claims that the approximate cost listed above was $575.00 which is incorrect. The actual price that we quoted in writing up front was $513.00 which was reduced to $454.00, $121.00 less than what was reported above. I still cannot figure out why the member took 9 months to file this report or why it is negative to begin with. We quoted a price in writing before our work, he agreed to the price, we successfully opened his sewer and when he complained about the price after the fact, we refunded some money and did return his call in a timely manner. Having been in business since 1928 we have learned that we cannot make everyone happy but we try.

I am both astonished and appalled by this customer’s report. First I will start with the “Responsiveness” and “Punctuality”. The customer called us early in the morning. We provided service to the customer the SAME DAY, arriving at 8:50am. How much faster could we possibly have arrived? The customer asked us to replace a hose faucet. Our technician found the handle to be overly tightened but operating properly otherwise. We loosened the handle. We didn’t sell them a new hose faucet because they didn’t need one. We could have just replaced the faucet as requested but we didn’t want to take advantage of the customer. Next the Mr. asked us to replace some piping in the garage because they were having a problem with water pressure. Our technician determined that the problem was with the well tank causing the well pump to run almost constantly. We do not perform work on well systems but told the customer what to tell his well company. Again, we could have simply upgraded the piping as requested but that would not have solved their problem. Actually we saved this customer from burning up his well pump. Finally, the customer asked us to replace their sump pump. We quoted the price to the customer for all of our work and the customer accepted the price PRIOR to us starting our work. If the customer thought the price was high, why didn’t they just take all of the free advice that we provided up to that point and ask us to leave? When I showed this report to our technician he couldn’t understand why we received such a terrible review. He provided a ton of free advice which saved this customer a lot of money, he didn’t take advantage of them by selling the customer things that they didn’t need, and was courteous throughout the entire service call. As the owner I had to reassure him that there are some people that you just can’t make happy and not to let one bad apple spoil the whole bunch.

Description of Work: We originally booked this company when it was DiPietro Plumbing, with which we had had good experience in the past. Since our last experience with DiPietro, however, Ravinia Plumbing bought DiPietro. Ravinia Plumbing is well known in our neighborhood as being immensely overpriced. Our experience with Ravinia verified this reputation. We called this company because we needed the plumbing for our powder room vanity connected. In addition, we saw water leaking from a soffit in our basement. We knew the soffit covered a pipe. Ravinia pulled off the soffit covering and stated that the old, copper piping was wearing thin. It recommended that we replace the pipe. We did not have an issue with the quality of their work on the powder room vanity or on the replacement of the pipe behind the soffit in the basement. But they sent 2 people to do the work and charged us $3000. When I asked for a breakdown, I was told that they clocked their own time at 7 hours (we don't see how they got to 7 hours) PLUS they said both workroom had to do "back office work" for 2 hours. For what? Ordering pipe? For both laborers? I was promised an itemized bill 10 days ago. I still have not seen it. In any event they charged $160/hour for 18 hours of work (5 hours of actual labor plus 2 hours of phony labor at our house plus 2 hours of fantasy paperwork at their office, all times 2 laborers) to give a bill of $2880. Add in some money for 4 feet of pipe, they said, and that gives $3000. Ravinia gave us an estimate in advance, and we accepted it. Once we saw the scarce amount of work and probed the calculation, however, we felt ripped off. The Ravinia representative refused to consider a change in the price.

Response from Ravinia Plumbing, Sewer, Heating & Electric
The comment that “Ravinia Plumbing is well known in our neighborhood as being immensely overpriced” is inaccurate. The two plumbers that serviced this customer were from DiPietro Plumbing. As the acquisition had recently been completed, the DiPietro employees were charging out of the DiPietro Plumbing pricebook with DiPietro Plumbing service rates. In reality, the hourly rates between the two companies differ by a few dollars per hour. If this customer was unhappy with the costs, they were unhappy with their old company DiPietro Plumbing. I suppose I now have to explain how a quotation works. A customer asks for a price to perform some work. The contractor provides the quote. The contractor performs the work. The contractor collects the quoted price. A quoted price and a time and materials price are never exactly the same. Sometimes our plumbers run into problems, the work takes longer, which results in a win for the customer and a loss for the contractor. Sometimes the work takes less time and or materials, which results in a win for the company and a loss for the customer. Most of the time the difference is within a few percentage points as was the case with this job. If you are going to act like a professional company and stand behind you quote, you stand behind your quote. You don’t start making all kind of adjustments when the work is completed. Now picture in your mind how this conversation works. We do the work, the customer asks for a breakdown which outlines the companies loss, so the company asks the customer for more money. How many times do you think a customer hands over more money because they don’t want to see the contractor endure a loss. Welcome to the wonderful world of business. Sometimes you win and sometimes you loose. If you win more often than you loose, you get to stay in business. If you loose more often than you win, you go out of business, just like DiPietro Plumbing did.

Description of Work: The serviceman was very inexperienced and did not appear to know what he was doing. Our problems related to low hot water pressure in a sink, a water filtration system, and a dripping faucet. He spent a fair amount of wasted time trying to figure things out and the only problem that he fixed was the dripping faucet. The company reduced the charge because of his inexperience, but even so, we had to take time off of work and wait around the house for him to arrive, and STILL had to find another plumber to do the work.

OUR ESTIMATOR PROVIDED A PRICE RANGE AND WE WERE TOLD TO GO AHEAD WITH THE WORK. WE DISPATCHED A STATE LICENSED PLUMBER WITH OVER 18 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. HE ARRIVED TO FIND THE AREA EXCAVATED BUT THE FITTINGS THAT THE CUSTOMER PROVIDED WERE INCORRECT FOR THE WORK HE WANTED DONE. WE USED OUR OWN MATERIALS TO CONNECT THE LINE PROPERLY AND TO CODE. THE CUSTOMER CALLED STATING THAT WE DIDN’T CONNECT THE DOWNSPOUT CORRECTLY. OUR ESTIMATOR VERIFIED THE INSTALLATION WITH OUR TECHNICIAN AND EVERYTHING WAS INSTALLED CORRECTLY. UNFORTUNATELY THE CUSTOMER HAS NO IDEA HOW TO MAKE THE CONNECTION PROPERLY. THE CUSTOMER CONTINUED TO COMPLAIN. WE INFORMED THE CUSTOMER THAT WE WOULD NOT PERFORM THE INSTALLATION TO HIS SPECIFICATIONS BECAUSE TO DO SO WOULD BE INCORRECT. WE ASKED THAT HE HAVE SOMEONE ELSE RE-DO THE WORK INCORRECTLY. WE DID NOT CHARGE THE CUSTOMER FOR OUR TIME OR OUR ATTEMPT TO EDUCATE HIM. REGARDING THE 2 WEEK TIME LAG, IT WAS DUE TO THE CUSTOMER’S SCHEDULE AND THE WEATHER AS THE WORK WAS OUTSIDE, NEITHER OF WHICH ARE UNDER OUR CONTROL.
