I visited their showroom on Ogden Avenue to pick out a new toilet. I informed them that this was a "tiny guest bath". I did not know much about toilets, but they convinced me that everyone gets oblong toilets and "easy height" toilets. I therefore ordered a toilet on their advice. For the toilet, they charged me $476.30. For 1.5 hours labor, they charged $256.00. Once the toilet was installed, it was very apparent that it was much too large for the small bathroom. I asked them to please come and remove the toilet. While waiting for them to remove the toilet, I went to Home Depot to pick out a smaller toilet that fit the room appropriately. While there, I saw the exact same toilet (even checked model numbers) of the toilet they had originally installed. It was $180.00 retail (reminder that they had charged me $476.30 for the same toilet). Service finally came out and removed the large toilet and replaced it with my smaller new toilet from Home Depot. They then charged me $192.00 for that service call and also dinged us a 20% ($95.26) "return charge" on the returned toilet. In other words, their markup on the original toilet was over 100%, and on top of that, they would not give us the full refund and kept 20% of the original price as a "return charge". I am going to be fair and say that we have used this company since we moved into our home. I will warn future customers, however, that if you want them to do the job, research retail prices on everything your project involves prior to ordering from Stephen's directly. They explained that if you do not order through them, they will not honor a warranty if something goes wrong. A warranty for what? I was very unhappy with the first toilet, and they not only made me feel horrible about the mistake, they charged me additional labor and a 20% fee for the return!!! Their service staff - the actually guys who come out to do the work - are truly professional, prompt and extremely courteous. Rich, specifically, who had to go through this with us, was never anything but professional and patient.
Description of Work: Our guest bath toilet stopped working, and since we have used Stephen's for 13+ for our heating service, we contacted them to replace our toilet.

Called for an estimate for a backed up kitchen drain. Company couldn't give me an estimate for coming out to clear my drain. Why not? Simple service were they should be able to give me an estimate as other plumbers do. Then company proceeded to tell me that they are on overtime rate because it was Saturday. Don't make that my problem! Other companies are not so I would suggest shop around!

Response from Stephens Plumbing
We service approximately 700 customers every month. We know from our experience that it would be irresposible to quote a price, over the phone, to rod a kitchen sink drain. The stoppage could be in the trap, or 30 ft. away without a proper clean-out. We are always up front about our rates, and try to help our customers as much as we can, over the phone. I am sorry this member did not give us a chance.

2 days later I received an email, only quoting their hourly rate. No parts cost info or time estimate. VERY different from the other plumber I contacted, who gave me a specific quote.
Description of Work: Emailed and asked for a quote to install a comfort-height toilet and replace a check valve in my ejector system.

Response from Stephens Plumbing
We are confused by this member's comment. We did receive a request for information at 9:46 AM and sent our reply at 2:37 PM the same day. We explained our rates in the reply and suggested he come into our store to select a proper toilet. The toilets vary greatly in price, and we would not want to sell him something he did not need. The last sentence in our reply asked him to please call if he has any questions. We never heard back from him.

When I ran the washing machine in the basement, the rinse water was backing up into the basement shower and utility sinks. We have an older home with many large trees, and that means tree roots making their way into the pipes. Don determined that there was likely blockage between the house and the sewer clean-out. Rodding that portion of the line cleared some roots, but to make sure there were no roots from the clean-out to the street, he also cleared that section since we'd had problems in the past with that portion of the sewer line. Don waited for me to run a load of laundry through the rinse cycle to make sure the problem was resolved.

Stephens was called to analyze a problem with possible leak between our home's sanitary sewers and the storm sewers/sump pump. He was very prompt and knowledgeable. Traced the problem to a nonfunctioning ejector pump. It was not a simple repair and required repairs to the pit cover, connecting lines and replacing the check valve. Their rates are a little high but we are very confident in their analysis and repair. They managed the scope of the project and did not 'over sell' the required work. He needed a part half way thru the work and Stephens sent a truck with the part immediately.
Description of Work: Replaced ejector pump.

Sump pump switch went out and I could not leave for fear of flooding as it was raining today. Found Stephens Plumbing and reviews were outstanding. Appointment set up was very easy. I needed someone there quick. Yes, again. He wore shoe covers, cleaned up and all the other customer service, bla bla bla. Arrived very quickly for a last minute call. Lucky I didn't try to do the repair myself. The PVC line to the pump was not completely threaded together, as a result rust had formed over the threads (old pump). This is where a professional will save you money. he was able to do the repair without replacing the pump; thats BIG $$$ SAVINGS. Zoeller pumps have the switch in the body of the pump. So, you have to replace the whole pump. Hydromatic (which I have) allows you to replace the switch fairly easily. Stephens Plumbing installs Barnes pumps which are also high grade. I had questions regarding upgrades to the system. The advice provided was detailed and spot on.

Dan and John called before they came, and showed up on time based on that call. The time quoted when I called was "late morning or early afternoon" so they had a pretty wide window to hit. I showed them the work i wanted done, and they got to work. Dan was the plumber, and John an HVAC guy. John did the gas line, relit the stuff that needed to be relit, and acted as plumber's assistant while Dan did the shower and drain pipe. I'm pleased with the work, and the total price was fine. I would have liked to have an idea of what it would cost prior to completion, but it was little enough that I'm OK with how it was handled. If you're having a plumber in you should be expecting to pay a few hundred. They were there for about 1 1/4 hours, and billed 1 1/4 hours for Dan and 1/2 hour for John, so that seemed fair to me. The hourly rate based on the final bill surprises me (that $300 was almost all labor) but I'm OK with it as a total price to get this stuff handled. Honestly, if I'd realized that the thing I could most easily handle myself (kitchen drain) was going to take most of the time I might have just done it myself. But on the other hand, I've been putting it off for years and just snaking it every nine months, so it was probably best to let someone else do it. I need to have some plumbing work done at a condo we own and I will probably have Stephens do it.
Description of Work: 1. Removed gas line to old oven (we're going to electric.) 2. Fixed kitchen drain by replacing pipe in basement 3. Fixed bathroom shower - the control knob wasn't working properly.

Stephens arrived promptly and were responsive to my needs. Our air conditioner compressor drain occasionally backups and causes flooding in the heating room, and into the kitchen this time. The serviceman who came initially repaired the flooding and another technician followed that afternoon with the power rodding. The price was fair and the technicians were friendly, cleaned up after themselves and offered tips to help avoid our laundry room sick from clogging up. I will be calling them again in the future for any plumbing needs.

I was very happy with the work performed. This was the first company I found that a) could install my dishwasher, b) didn't have to wait to call me to set an appointment time until 24 hours before, c) didn't try to upcharge me by telling me my existing plumbing was not up to code. Their time estimate was correct in terms of how long the job would take, they were punctual and they did the job. Their price came in higher than a competitor but the job was done well & efficiently so I guess I am willing to overlook the price because the job is finally done.

Excellent experience overall (aside from the original sewage overflow).
Description of Work: A drain pipe in our basement backed up and overflowed, spilling sewage in a storeroom in the middle of the night. We called Stephen's first thing next morning (on a Sunday) and the plumber was out in less than 2 hours after the call (thankfully there weren't other emergencies). He diagnosed the problem within 10 minutes and less than an hour later everything was done. He explained everything in detail and was very courteous. Would definitely use them again.

Great work. Great integrity. Great price.
Description of Work: I had a leaky sillcock (you know where your hose hooks up on the side of your house) and needed to get it replaced, I'm somewhat of a handyman but upon further research decide to get a licensed plumber for this job. I called Stephens Plumbing and the came out the next day to assess the situation. I did some internet research and found that most people said to replace not rebuild the sillcock. So, when Mike got here from Stephens Plumbing, the first thing he said to me upon inspection is "Do you want me to rebuild this for you"? I told him that I would rather have it replaced and he reluctantly said OK, no problem, I just want to make sure you know that it's going to be more expensive. Well, to make a long story short, we realized that to replace the sillcock would take some major tear up work inside the house and would have cost many hundreds of dollars. So, Mike completely rebuilt the sillcock and it works perfectly. Another less than scrupulous plumber may have made me tear my house up just for the profit margin involved.

Tony came to give me an estimate for a bigger pit and he was very informative and very honest! He told me that a bigger pit would not solve the problem becauseI have a high water table and the bigger pit will not change the amount the pump goes off. He said a second pit would make it easier to work on the 2 pumps I have but that it was not necessary. He also explained what to do with some clanging pipes and how to fix them by myself. Very honest and helpful and will definitely call with any plumbing problems.

Great! I had used them before with continual problems with the previous plumbing. They answered my questions and suggested that a complete redo would be desirable. When my 15 year old dishwasher broke again I called in a very reliable repairman. After removing the dishwasher, he told me that the plumbing was not up to current code and I couldn't put in a new dishwasher until I had it fixed. Besides problems with the dishwasher: - the hot/cold lines to the sink were reversed, - the lines connected the dishwasher and the garbage disposal in a way that sent the dirty water back to the dishwasher, requiring us to clean the dishes before using the dishwasher, the hot water line was connected to the ice maker resulting in mineral deposits on the ice, the shut off valves were almost impossible to reach for the hot water dispenser and the garbage disposal, and - the pipe to the dishwasher was not in the correct position to properly drain the dishwasher. He repaired all these items and reduced the amount of pipes so I have more room beneath the sink. It only took 3 hours for him to remove all the old plumbing, repair the drain, and put in new pipes and valves. My kitchen was clean when he finished with no disruption to our household. Outstanding!
