I called Matt and gave him an idea of what I wanted (portion of bathroom ceiling removed and later replaced so that work could be done on the pipes above). Matt came out, on time, gave me an estimate and told me when one of his guys would be available to do the work. The guy came on time. Explained to me exactly what he would do. Made a suggestion about a better way to accomplish the goal, with which I agreed and removed the ceiling. He did an excellent job of cleaning up, which not all places do. When it came time to replace the ceiling after the plumbing work was done, the same guy came out on time and again did a good job.
Description of Work: Removal of appox 1/3 of a bathroom ceiling to allow work to be done on the pipes above and repair/replace the ceiling after the work was done.

I tried to use this company on 3 different occasions but never received a return phone call. My guess is that since they have a high Angies list rating they must have plenty of work and don't need to return all the calls.

We do get a high volume of calls on a daily basis. On rare ocaissions, someone gets lost in the mix. I'm sorry to this customer. With that said, I went over the last six months call lists to find him, and coiuldn't. Hopefully he was calling the right company.

This was a great experience. My 'guy' was on time, very polite and thorough, and did a great job. He worked for 2 1/2 hours and only charged us $150, which was much better than the other estimates I found. Overall, we were very happy and plan on using them again!

Excellent. I called Matt just a few days before and told him I wanted to get my son's bedroom painted before he returned home the following Tuesday. I described the project and he was able to give me a quote over the phone. I was pleased they were completely comfortable with no VOC paint. The painters arrived Monday morning. They were professional and did an excellent job. They wanted to make sure I was absolutely satisfied with the job before they left. The real proof of their excellent work was my son's reaction. "This looks amazing!" I will definitely use You've Got a Guy again.

Matt and Tom from You've Got a Guy were great. They were both responsive and professional. Tom also did an amazing job in my bathroom. The mold is gone and the paint looks fantastic. It's like a brand new room. I plan on using them again in the near future.

After You've Got a Guy failed to show up for the first appointment, and didn't respond to several of our attempts to contact them, we shouldn't have gone ahead. However, as they gave a very good bid and were personable when we met with them, we decided to proceed. We have three major complaints. First, when they arrived to do the job I asked if they would be power sanding or hand sanding, to which they replied that they were planning to do both. They did not take the proper precautions to minimize and contain lead dust, which was spread widely throughout our home. They covered furniture with plastic tarps, but did not tape it down and contain dust properly, nor did they clean properly (we spent over three days washing dust off of walls, furniture and mopping, taking time off work to do so). We confirmed that the dust created by the job did in fact contain lead when we hired an inspector, certified by the EPA, to have it analyzed. To this complaint, You've Got a Guy responded that we changed the parameters of the job, by requesting power sanding. This is not true. We asked a question to clarify whether or not they were planning to power sand, which is different than requesting that they do so. The fact that they had their power sanders here and ready to go supports this claim. Irrespective of this, whether we had requested it or not, it was incumbent on You've Got a Guy to do the power sanding safely and they did not. Second, the quality of the work was quite poor. The paint they applied is peeling/chipping profusely, there are places where paint was sloppily applied and dried heavier and splotchy, brush strokes are visible and do not consistently go in the same direction, and paint dripped between the upper and lower panes creating streaks that become apparent when the window is open. There are also many areas where a brownish-yellow color comes through where it should be completely white. In regard to quality, the lead worker claimed that because of the cold the painting could not be done correctly, and that they would have to return in the spring to work on it further. While this is true, many of the problems with the performance of the work were not due to the cold at all, but to sloppy application of paint. Finally, I asked the head of the company, Matt Baffoe, to come see the quality of the work after the job, requesting that he consider refunding us. He insisted that he come with the lead worker that did the job, to which we expressed a preference to have him come on his own for two simple reasons: 1) to avoid an unnecessarily conflictual situation, and 2) because the job speaks quite clearly for itself. He absolutely insisted that he come with the lead worker. Then, in a phone conversation Mr. Baffoe used several vulgarities and accused me of being a weasel who was "trying to get something for nothing." In the end, what we actually got is worse than nothing. We are out several hundred dollars, spent far more time than we should have on cleaning up the mess, and paid for a lead analysis to ensure that our children were safe. Finally, we still need to either do this right ourselves or get someone in who can get the job done properly. Overall, quite poor on both performance and professionalism.
Description of Work: We had You've Got a Guy come to do interior window patching, sanding and painting on older wooden frame windows.

Response from You've Got A Guy Inc
I (Matthew Baffoe) met with the client to discuss minor repairs around her home. I had to reschedule our first interview (I can’t remember why, but that does happen on occasion). I’m a diabetic, and sometimes it gets in the way. I gave the client several quotes for minor repairs, including a light scrape and paint of her windows (8 windows at $80.00/per window). I had three conversations with the client about the type of paint and the type of preparation we were going to do. In all of those conversations, I made it clear that we were not going to scrape or sand below the top layer of paint. In fact, all we were going to do was remove any flaking of the top layer and lightly scuff it so we could apply a new top layer, therefore encapsulating the windows and any paint that existed below it. We explained that we were going to use Sherwin William’s Pro-Green paint. This product has no VOC and we are very familiar with it. We were going to test one window, but on the scheduled date, my worker called in sick and we had to reschedule again. This is what [The Member] refers to in his complaint as us missing “several” appointments. First Change in Contract – The client called me to tell me that she had picked out another type of paint because it was environmentally friendly. She eventually picked out another primer that was also environmentally friendly. Although we prefer Pro-Green, I agreed to this because they were Sherwin William’s products, and I didn’t charge her extra for the more expensive paint. I also warned her that I had never used these products before and wasn’t sure how they would perform. Second Change in Contract – As my crew was hand sanding the windows; [The Member] requested that they go deeper to get the top layer of paint off of the windows. He specifically asked them to use electric sanders. They should have said no. Neither party called me to get my permission – at this point, our contract became void. [The Member] states that because we had power sanders in the truck, we obviously came intending to use them. We always have power sanders in our trucks. We’re a painting/handyman/hardwood floor/general contractor. I’m sure we have saws in our truck too, that doesn’t mean we were going to use them, does it? Unfortunately, my guys felt that they were going the extra mile to help the customer, and that wasn’t the case. [The Member] told them that he had the area tested for lead and that there was none (this is corroborated by two of my guys). Tom did put plastic over everything, but according to [The Member], dust went everywhere. In an attempt to please [The Member] they dug out some of the old glazing as well (not part of the contract). The moisture from the windows made it impossible to re-glaze them (again, something that should never have been attempted in the first place – done at [The Member’s] request). [The Member] and Tom went window to window and Tom addressed any concerns that [The Member] had. In the end, [The Member] refused to pay full price so Tom gave him a fifty percent discount, to which $336.00 was paid (I’m still not sure how they came to that number). Tom also told him that we would come back in the spring, fix the glazing, and re-paint the windows. As to [The Member’s] claim that later he found brush marks and drips; it’s possible that these were there already. We didn’t remove all of the paint, so those could’ve existed from past paint jobs (the building is 100 years old). The eco-friendly paint has browned and allowed the old stains to show through. Since we didn’t choose the paint, I’m not taking responsibility for that. The real problem here is that [The Member] and his wife have refused to meet with me and Tom. They specifically state that they feel uncomfortable with Tom there. This is a red flag. In this case, I believe the customer is lying. His story has been inconsistent and has changed throughout. At first, [The Member] said that if I gave him his $336.00 back and gave him $300.00 for cleaning; he wouldn’t put an Angie’s List response out. When I denied that, he threatened me with calling the EPA and having large fines put on my business (this would be the point where I used profanity and called him a weasel – an assessment that I still agree with). Later, after spending days and hours cleaning the apartment, he claims to have had the apartment tested for lead dust and the results came back positive. Strangely enough, this test cost him $300.00 (the same amount of money – plus $336.00 – he is requesting from me). If he cleaned up all of the dust, then what did he have tested? I requested that his wife send us a visa statement or cancelled check along with the lab results (copies via the mail – not email) and a name and number of the lab technician, but to this date haven’t received any of this. Since both The client and [The Member] both state that they spent hours cleaning the place before the test, I can only conclude that they have lead paint all over their home and this, not the dust from the windows, is the cause of their lead problems. The EPA will test this for free. I suggested this, but they haven’t responded.

I interviewed many contractors & found You've Got A Guy's by VERY far - to be the most realistic, honest, and professional contractor out there (from their Mgmt. of the project to each individual guy actually doing the work). Getting work done to your home is always stressful no matter what - that's why we are paying for Angie's List. I took the time to write this review after the completion of my project because I highly recommend You've Got a Guy & would hire them again. They were an absolute joy to work with. If you want honest work done to your home ? it does not get any better than You?ve Got A Guy!

These two customers were a joy to work for. We completely finished their attic. We had to structurally modify two walls and add a beam to keep a sagging roof from falling in. In the end, the room looked great and our customer was obviously pleased.

I was happy with the attic work but I was not so happy with the door installation. They actually did some damage to the door and I had to do a couple days of patch work to the door myself after the fact. They talked me in to doing the door and I wish I hadn't. I had someone else lined up to do that and they would have provided a better service.

Very pleasant experience involving Matt and Russ. The entire experience from start to finish was problem-free and the final outcome looked awesome. One added bonus was that Matt had no problems picking up the Durock from Home Depot which I couldn't fit in my car. Very knowledgeable and trustworthy crew which allowed me to feel comfortable leaving them alone in my house to complete the work. It went great. The handyman showed up on time, was very professional. He did a walkthrough with me to understand what had to be done. He then went to work and when he was done he came back and we walked through again. All the work was neat and uniform. Matt was the most professional of the three firms I interviewed for this work. He wanted to understand the job and gave us the best prices of the three. Because of the ease of working with this company and the quality of work we are making them our vendor of choice for handyman services.

Matt and crew are great. This started as a project I thought I could do myself; quickly learned that was not the case. Matt gave me an incredibly fair estimate on time and price. I contacted Matt at You've Got a Guy for an estimate the first week in August. During that initial meeting, I was quite impressed with Matt's rapport, professionalism, integrity and knowledge. It was refreshing to find a handyman that appeared to be a man of his word, as I have been burned of late with other contractors. Matt explained it would take a couple extra days to get the bid to me, as his business computer had gotten a virus, which understandably demanded immediate attention. The timeline worked fine for me as I was in the process of gathering other estimates for the project. So it surprised me when I didn't hear for a several days after when Matt originally agreed to send the bid, but I gave the benefit of the doubt and called and left a message. Over the next week or so, the communication from him was random and not to the full extent from which he originally promised, however, he did make it known that the virus had wreaked havoc to a greater extent than originally feared and that he was taking every precaution in not spreading the virus to any customers. I was grateful and willing to wait, because of my impression during our first meeting. And I am so glad I did. Once he was able to get through his situation with the virus, it was completely smooth sailing from there. His bid was the lowest and most accurately and thoroughly communicated as to the actual work that would be done. So I hired him. He brought his worker Russ over prior to starting the project to make sure we were all on the same page. This was the level of communication and integrity he demonstrated during our first meeting and as to why I was willing to wait to get his bid. He made sure my greatest concerns with the project's outcome were considered and addressed openly, honestly and thoroughly. Russ worked three days, one day longer than originally planned due the need to dry out the existing water damage underneath the exterior materials. Again, a professional conscientious consideration that I have witnessed other contractors due to not wanting to put in another day. Russ did a great job saving the old tiles (which were not replaceable so the aesthetics would have been altered), repairing the existing water damage and retiling and grouting the entire area. It not only looks fantastic, it is water and weather tight. Russ also shaved down the wrought iron gate latch catch that swells in the heat, making for improper operation. A minor job in comparison but thrilled nonetheless for the proper operation of my front gate. Matt followed up via phone to ensure I was completely satisfied with the project and with Russ. I am completely thrilled at the thoroughness and professional integrity of Matt, Russ and the company. I WILL hire them again and again, anytime I need home repairs, as it is a relief to finally find a company that meets a standard of professional workmanship and integrity I expect and at a fair price.
Description of Work: The ceramic-tiled framework and base areas around a large vertical exterior window, approx 11' high, were removed, reassessed, dried out, and replaced, including tilework, grout, and caulking. In addition, a wrought iron gate's latch catch was shaven down to ensure proper operation when metal expands/contrasts due to various weather conditions.

This person was a joy to work for. She's funny and candid. It has taken a long time, but I think I have all of the wrinkles with my computer problems worked. It's hard to run a paperless (nearly) office when your system goes down. Unfortunately, other customers suffered because of this as well. This tile job was actually a little more involved than first expected, but Russ did a great job of listening to what the customer's wants and needs were and did a fine job for her. I wish her luck in her own business...If I could mention her by name, I would, but I think that is against Angie's List code of conduct.

According to my Ray and Doug, the true comedians were the ladies who owned the house. Both men said that they were beyond funny. They were a pleasure to work for. We look forward to coming back.

I spoke with Ken. We scheduled a date, and met at the property. On the day of our meeting he was there before I arrived, which I liked! He told me that he'd actually already taken all of the measurements, and would send me an estimate via email. I also looked at actual concrete work he'd done prior. We talked at length about being comfortable--trusting--the person you hire to do a job. I had a good feeling about Ken, so I told him that I'd be waiting for the estimate, and let him know shortly after of my decision. By the time I received the estimate, I'd thought of a LOT more questions. I responded to Ken's email and included all of my questions...which I thought were reasonable. Ken's responded: "Given the list provided, you are going to want to hire a concrete company to satisfy your needs, not a handyman company. Your list below sounds as if there is not a trust factor as discussed with you yesterday." There was more to the email, but I stopped reading after this sentence. I felt I knew all I needed to know. It wasn't that I didn't TRUST Ken. Not at all. What it was is that I don't know anything about concrete, nor did I know what was important to ask for when hiring a contractor do this type of work. So I asked ALL of the questions I thought were necessary to make me feel comfortable before spending thousands of dollars on a job. I took Ken's advice and hired a concrete company, Chicagoland Concrete.
Description of Work: I needed the stoop on my property torn down and replaced, as it was in really bad shape (corners broken away, cracks everywhere, a hole in one step, etc).

This customer didn't sent a list of questions, she sent a list of demands. Our email to her politely stated that we didn't want to take her job. We learned a long time ago that certain jobs aren't worth taking on. We couldn't do this job to her exacting standards, so we passed on it. I would rather be honest with a person and let them know that someone else can do the job better. We are not just a handyman company, we are a general contractor with a handyman service as well. The professional thing to do was to pass in this case.

We called company out for estimate on plumbing and carpentry, initially. While there we asked for an estimate for a concrete patio. He informed us that he would email or call back with an estimate. We to date have never recieved an estimate, even after contacting him and he reinterated that he will send estimate, ASAP. I don't think he was interested in the job after coming out but he was very nice during all contact. I just wish our hope and time wasn't wasted. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!!!

We chose to go with You've Got a Guy because Ken, the estimator, was the only estimator (and we had 4) who actually opened up the access panel in our second bedroom to see what was going on behind the wall. He was clearly very knowledgeable and honest. Once work began, Matt offered to pick up our vanity from Lowes since it was too big for our car. This saved us from having to rent a van or pay for delivery. What I appreciated most was that he checked in with me throughout the process to make sure I knew what was going on and to okay what they were doing. This was important because there were some issues with the tile that had to be redone. But they fixed it and made sure everything was exactly how we wanted it to be. I also thought the price was really reasonable considering the work done and the time spent. I would add, as a mother of a young baby, that they were really careful to be as quiet as possible and to keep things clean. And they were really pleasant to have in the house. Matt even offered to bring me lunch when they took their lunch break.
Description of Work: Estimator diagnosed the problems (a leaking drum trap). A new cover was placed over the drum trap and the damage from the leak was repaired. This involved putting in new floor tile, installing a new sink and vanity, putting in new baseboard trim, and installing a new toilet.

We've never seen a baby smile so much. This job was a little complicated and wasn't done to perfection on the first try. It took a second try to get it done the right way and the customer was happy. She and her husband were a joy to work for.

This customer was a joy to work for. We were able to fix a problem with her floor that was made by an inexperienced contractor. It's unfortunate that she had to have her work redone, but we were able to help her out and she was amazingly easy to work with.

We had an excellent experience with everybody we interacted with at You've Got a Guy and would use them again without hesitation. Their estimates on the work to be done were not only honored, but they were quite informative too. We were kept up to date on progress of the work and informed well in advance of new information related to the completion date. One area of water damage repair did not look quite right, but owner Matt Baffoe personally made sure that the area was redone to our satisfaction. I felt so positive about my experience with YGAG that I recommended them as a contractor to our condo board.
Description of Work: Repaired a hole in drywall, repaired water-damaged drywall, painted interior of 2 bed/2 bath condo.

This customer and his wife were a joy to work for. We painted the walls in his condo, patched holes, and fixed a water damaged ceiling. They just put the house on the market, and it sold in a matter of weeks. We were very happy for them.
