Description of Work: I needed my chimney inspected after moving into my townhouse, which is 15 years old. Dan used his experience as a fireman to test the operation of my gas logs and ended up switching out my gas connector using supplies he had in stock. He made minor adjustments to my damper which was loose, without trying to steer me towards a more expensive fix which would have required removing the entire pre-fab fireplace. He even inquired about the condition and operation of my carbon monoxide detectors. I found him after extensive research on Angie's List, BBB, and yelp.

Description of Work: I hired Dan to give me a second opinion for my fireplace. I was told that I needed a new liner which would have cost me thousands of dollars. I had heard of Dan through a shop that I called to find out about ventless fireplaces. The shop owner suggested I call Ye Olde Chimney Sweep. He said Dan was a fireman, highly trained and very honest. Dan came a week or two after my first call he said my fireplace was FINE! I DID NOT NEED TO SPEND THOUSANDS. He went over some safety precautions when using the fireplace. I will have him come in the spring to put a mesh cover on so that dirt and animals can't get in my house! Highly Recommend him.

Description of Work: Very thorough, very competent, I learned a lot, took notes, feel comfortable following his instructions in using my fireplace. My contractor happened to be in the home at the time, heard him and was also impressed. Highly recommended. He knows what there is to know to safely use a fireplace, what kind of wood to buy, how to start a fire, how to keep a draft going, how to place the logs in the firebox (new word he taught me). He fully inspected the fireplace, told me by seeing a darkened area what problem the previous owner had experienced, how to avoid it in the future. Highly recommended.

Description of Work: Jim Duffy came out to tell me a lot of bad news about my fireplace and then wasn't sure if he could get on the roof to the chimney stack to install a cap. He's a chimney sweep who can't get on the roof! Very frustrating and did not call back with his promised estimate.

Description of Work: I attempted twice to schedule an evaluation/cleaning w/ Mr. Duffy. The first occasion, on a work day, his assistant confirmed that he would call 30 min. before showing up at our house. He did not call, but merely showed up, leaving his card. Simple misunderstanding, which is fine. The next occasion, a weekend, we confirmed with his assistant a THREE HOUR window during which to wait for him. He failed to show, though we remained at home for an ADDITIONAL hour. We had to leave to do other things, and he called a half hour later (or 1.5 hours AFTER the agreed-upon and confirmed window) to say that he was running late. I opted to use another company.

Description of Work: Called to have our chimney cleaned as quickly as possible. Did not call back for four days, by which time another company had completed the job.

Description of Work: Jim Duffy came out and fixed our broken damper (aka flue cover) in record time. He was professional and courteous -- and extended a 10% Angie's List discount off the regular price. He showed us the "proper" way of opening and closing the damper so we wouldn't knock it off track in the future and left a guide to proper fireplace usage and cleaning.
