Starting at the beginning: The client's furnace was producing a deadly amount of Carbon Monoxide when we inspected it for the problem with no heat. When we recommended that the furnace be changed to prevent him from being injured or killed, he actually did have a choice...he could have called another contractor. Whenever we install a furnace in winter it's too cold to test how the AC will work with the new furnace. Instead we leave the control wires for the AC off so we can return in the spring, at no charge, and adjust the AC to work with the new furnace. Most HVAC companies skip this step but we believe this is the right way to do the work and in the client's best interest. After discovering the negative review I called the client to explain this misunderstanding in his review and he became more and more agitated with my explanation. I also uncovered his real motive behind the negative review. Several months after installing the new furnace in his home (and possibly saving his life) he hired us to install a new boiler in his bar. When we first inspected his old boiler for an issue with no heat we found the client had been making his own modifications to the boiler to keep it running. These modifications, THAT HE MADE, to his boiler could have caused a problem with Carbon Monoxide or worse...an EXPLOSION! After installing the new boiler and checking it for correct operation we explained to the client that there were no user serviceable parts on the new boiler and that he should leave the servicing of the boiler to our trained technicians. We were called the next day because the bar was cold and found that the client had adjusted the new boiler controls within 15 minutes after we left the day before. We again explained to the client, who is an audio engineer, NOT an HVAC Technician, not to play around with his new boiler. We explained that not only could he create a situation where he or his patrons could get harmed but that it was unsafe for our technicians who could service the boiler unaware that he had made his own alterations. He told me he took offense with my pleading that he leave the equipment alone. He felt that I had used a condescending tone and that's why he wrote a negative review. He also told me to "wait for the other shoe to drop" warning of more negative reviews in the future. Sometimes the problem is the contractor, sometimes the problem is the client.Service Provider Response
SORRY FOR NOT CALLING TO VERIFY OUR APPOINTMENT...WE WORKED VERY LATE THE NIGHT BEFORE AND DIDN'T WANT TO CALL AT SUCH AN IMPOLITE HOUR. OUR PRICES WERE DISCUSSED BEFORE WE CAME OUT AND WE EXPLAINED WHY A FURNACE THAT WAS ONLY A YEAR OLD SHOULD BE EXAMINED. UPON OUR INSPECTION WE FOUND SEVERAL SAFTY ISSUES WITH THE WAY IT WAS INSTALLED. THE FURNACE("THAT DIDN'T NEED ANY WORK")WAS INSTALLED, CRAMED UNDER A STAIRCASE, WITH NO SOURCE OF COMBUSTION AIR AGAINST CITY OF CHICAGO AND PEOPLES ENERGY CODES...NO SCREENS ON THE FLUE PIPE TO PREVENT BLOCKAGE, AN UNSAFE CONDITION AS PER MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND A LEAKING FLUE COLLAR THAT WAS ALLOWING CONDENSATION INSIDE THE FURNACE THAT COULD RUIN THE SOLID-STATE ELECTRONICS. THE UPSTAIRS FURNACE WAS AN OLDER FURNACE AND UPON AN EXTENSIVE INSPECTION WAS FOUND TO HAVE HOLES IN SEVERAL WELDED SEAMS...A POTENTIAL CARBON MONOXIDE PROBLEM. SINCE THE CUSTOMER HAD A SMALL CHILD WE TOOK THE SAFEST ROUTE AND DISCONNECTED THE GAS SUPPLY TO THE FURNACE (THE ONLY TIME I'VE DONE THAT IN 20+YEARS) AND RECOMMENDED A REPLACEMENT OPTION. AS FOR SCARE TACTICS...WE EXPLAINED TO THE CUSTOMER HIS OPTIONS CALMLY AND CLEARLY. WE SPOKE TO THE CUSTOMER BY PHONE FROM HIS HOUSE WHILE HE WAS AT WORK. AFTER LISTENING TO HIS COMPLAINTS ABOUT OUR PRICES (AGAIN), WE DETERMINED THAT WE WEREN'T A GOOD FIT FOR HIS NEEDS. SOMETIMES THE CONTRACTOR IS THE PROBLEM...SOMETIMES THE CUSTOMER IS THE PROBLEM.Angi Certified
