My first visit to the store went well. The salesman walked me through my options and answered my questions.
After some further research, I ended up back at the store with the intention of buying tile I had been show during my first visit. The original salesman was not there. The guy behind the counter was difficult to pin down and seemed disinterested in writing up my order. (Really, it was just "X amount of that tile" at that point.)
I was told the tile would be in the following Monday. It didn't come in (my contractor went to pick it up) and the store wasn't returning my calls. I finally talked to someone and was told, with an air of annoyance, a story about the supplier not having email. However, my tile would be there in few days.
Repeat the above scenario a few times.
Finally, three weeks later, the tile came in.
My hunch? They don't really care about smaller deals.
ServPro also pointed out several places where the carpet was cut too short, which was hidden under the baseboard.
I called Neil at Rexx and explained the situation. When I asked him if the pad was installed correctly, he refused to say yes or no, and then said even if it was incorrect it shouldn't make a difference (which is NOT what ServPro said - according to them, this kind of flooding would be completely cleanable were the carpet installed right.)
The conversation with Neil deteriorated as I looked for him to offer a solution. After a few minutes he hung up on me, which is just plain rude.
There were several reviews on Angies List warning against using Rexx, and I wish i had paid attention to them and used another vendor. Live and learn, I guess.
"I ended my phone conversation with Member after she used the term "morality" which I thought was getting personal. In later email correspondence she said I misunderstood her meaning. Perhaps I did. Member's complaints regarding the job are based entirely on the opinion of a workman from ServPro, who is wrong in every respect. Padding ALWAYS rolls out right side up, and the notion that an experienced carpet installer would roll it out and then flip it over (for no reason whatsoever) is absurd. Even if that had happened, the disaster would have been the same. The "water barrier" in our padding is really just a moisture barrier, meant to help with a spilled drink, pet accident, that kind of thing. In a flood requiring extraction by a company like ServPro, the pad acts like a sponge regardless of the right side up/upside down issue. Maybe there is some pad out there that behaves as the ServPro workman describes, with the water being trapped in some fashion and held away from the carpet, thereby saving the carpet, but I have never heard of it and it is surely not mine. I told Member our padding supplier would confirm this for her. I suggested she consider third party options to get at the truth of the matter. She agreed to neither of these suggestions. Member did not "look to (me) to offer a solution." Rather, she rather agressively insisted that Rexx owed her a complete replacement and would hear of nothing else. I was never rude, but I was clear in defending Rexx Rug against unfair and inaccurate statements and accusations. Finally- Rexx Rug has a very high standard of customer service. We are a 50 year old family owned and operated business and we live and die on our reputation. We are the winner of the most recent Angie's List Super Service Award. We applaud Angie's List for giving vendors the opportunity to tell their side of the story. Neil Schaye, owner, Rexx Rug"
I will go back to Rex Rug for future purchases. It was well worth the wait.
Some of the sales clerks are friendlier and more helpful than others. The owners lack a bit of patience with customers and don't really have that great customer service manner, but they are alright. Sometimes you have to be persistent to get calls returned, and there was a bit of confusion at one point in finding our order, but overall the experience was good, particularly compared to some of the hard sell and shady practices of the bigger carpet companies. I would recommend this company and use them again.
Their measurement person came as promised and presented a diagram and plan including new matching color threshold strips as needed where carpet met tile. They were good at measuring.
When we did not hear that the carpet had arrived nor set a date to install by the next Friday, July 15th, we called and Joshua then made calls and arranged the installation date for the next Tuesday, July 19th.
The installers came on time and went to work. What they did not do was vacuum 15 years of dirt before putting down the new carpet. I expressed concern before they continued onto the other two rooms and was told it was not necessary because of the padding. I stated I was asthmatic and would appreciate the vacuuming in the remaining rooms...it was not done.
Before beginning work my husband and I shared that he had tools and screws ready to tighten a few spots where the floor squeaked and we asked to be told when they had emptied the back room so that he could take 5 minutes to do that. They did not, so we now have the squeaks and a new carpet we do not want to put screws through.
Our order included gray matching thresholds for the two bathrooms where the carpets meet tile and were told that they would not work here even though the man who measured discussed them. We then were told that the flooring was not even enough to use those so he could put on new metal ones but new holes might crack the tiles. We obviously choose not to make new holes and take the chance of breaking the tiles.
Another surprise was being asked for approximately $2000.00 COD from the installers. No mention had been made about that.
We stated we would rather finish paying Rexx where we ordered.
I was so upset I waited rather than call the store. I assumed they would call and ask how all had gone; nope, no call that day.
The next day the store called and I expressed my concerns and disappointment. I explained that there seemed to be a lack of communication and that we now had new carpet over much filth and a room with squeaks after asking for 5-10 minutes to fix them. Magda said she was surprised. She also asked for the final payment. She charged the remainder and said she would talk with the installers.
Well it has been more than a week and hearing nothing back I am writing as a disappointed customer. I can not recommend
going to Rexx Carpet. They were great on selling, but not on calling back as promised. After emptying and moving four closets,
two bookcases, and an entire office and spending $4,000.00 we expected to be thrilled, not disappointed.
"It is clear that things did not go well with the installer. This customer does state "I was so upset I waited rather than call the store." We could have and would have addressed every issue, but we were only informed after the fact. We are very responsive when given the chance to respond. My aplogies to this customer. Neil Schaye, owner"
