I wanted to go with a neighborhood store when buying new floor tile for my bathroom and I ended up at Rexx Rug.
My first visit to the store went well.  The salesman walked me through my options and answered my questions.
After some further research, I ended up back at the store with the intention of buying tile I had been show during my first visit.  The original salesman was not there.  The guy behind the counter was difficult to pin down and seemed disinterested in writing up my order.  (Really, it was just "X amount of that tile" at that point.)
I was told the tile would be in the following Monday.  It didn't come in (my contractor went to pick it up) and the store wasn't returning my calls.  I finally talked to someone and was told, with an air of annoyance, a story about the supplier not having email.  However, my tile would be there in few days.
Repeat the above scenario a few times.
Finally, three weeks later, the tile came in.
My hunch?  They don't really care about smaller deals.

The salesman at the store was wonderful.  He steered me to high quality and reasonably priced rugs for three staircases.  He provided excellent advice as to which carpet selections would be appropriate as a runner and which carpet selections would be appropriate as wall to wall carpet.  The person who came out to measure my staircases was very accommodating regarding my work schedule and came to the house exactly on time.  The installer was fantastic.  He did an excellent job, with attention to the fine details.  I was very satisfied with the end result.

We had some water in our basement and ServPro came to extract it. They said that our type of leaking would normally come up no problem (clean water, not a lot of it) except that the carpet pad had been installed upside down, so that the water barrier is at the top of the pad vs. the bottom. As a result, the water is trapped under the water barrier and cannot be dried.
ServPro also pointed out several places where the carpet was cut too short, which was hidden under the baseboard.
I called Neil at Rexx and explained the situation. When I asked him if the pad was installed correctly, he refused to say yes or no, and then said even if it was incorrect it shouldn't make a difference (which is NOT what ServPro said - according to them, this kind of flooding would be completely cleanable were the carpet installed right.)
The conversation with Neil deteriorated as I looked for him to offer a solution.  After a few minutes he hung up on me, which is just plain rude.
There were several reviews on Angies List warning against using Rexx, and I wish i had paid attention to them and used another vendor.  Live and learn, I guess.

Response from REXX RUG
"I ended my phone conversation with Member after she used the term "morality" which I thought was getting personal. In later email correspondence she said I misunderstood her meaning. Perhaps I did. Member's complaints regarding the job are based entirely on the opinion of a workman from ServPro, who is wrong in every respect. Padding ALWAYS rolls out right side up, and the notion that an experienced carpet installer would roll it out and then flip it over (for no reason whatsoever) is absurd. Even if that had happened, the disaster would have been the same. The "water barrier" in our padding is really just a moisture barrier, meant to help with a spilled drink, pet accident, that kind of thing. In a flood requiring extraction by a company like ServPro, the pad acts like a sponge regardless of the right side up/upside down issue. Maybe there is some pad out there that behaves as the ServPro workman describes, with the water being trapped in some fashion and held away from the carpet, thereby saving the carpet, but I have never heard of it and it is surely not mine. I told Member our padding supplier would confirm this for her. I suggested she consider third party options to get at the truth of the matter. She agreed to neither of these suggestions. Member did not "look to (me) to offer a solution." Rather, she rather agressively insisted that Rexx owed her a complete replacement and would hear of nothing else. I was never rude, but I was clear in defending Rexx Rug against unfair and inaccurate statements and accusations. Finally- Rexx Rug has a very high standard of customer service. We are a 50 year old family owned and operated business and we live and die on our reputation. We are the winner of the most recent Angie's List Super Service Award. We applaud Angie's List for giving vendors the opportunity to tell their side of the story. Neil Schaye, owner, Rexx Rug"

We got off to a great start. The salesman was courteous and dedicated a great deal of time to help me select the rug material for my 13' round rug. He explained the process, gave me a cost, and said he would order a sample for me to assure correct color.  Several weeks later I still had no sample and no explanation. I'm skipping some details here that caused further delay and frustration. I spoke with the owner who couldn't have been more helpful. I got good advice from him, my sample arrived, and I ordered the rug. It was delivered on time by 2 very efficient and courteous delivery people who were professional at their job. I am absolutely thrilled with both the rug and the outcome.  I just wish it had been a smoother transaction.
I will go back to Rex Rug for future purchases. It was well worth the wait.

After comparison shopping, we found the price at Rexx Rugs to be reasonable and comparable.  The quality of the nylon berber rug we bought was good.  The stair installers did a great job.  And when, the day after installation in the basement, we got some water in the new carpet, they replaced the padding in that section for no charge (they were coming out to finish the stairs already).

Some of the sales clerks are friendlier and more helpful than others.  The owners lack a bit of patience with customers and don't really have that great customer service manner, but they are alright.  Sometimes you have to be persistent to get calls returned, and there was a bit of confusion at one point in finding our order, but overall the experience was good, particularly compared to some of the hard sell and shady practices of the bigger carpet companies.  I would recommend this company and use them again.

Only July 8th, we went into store and talked with a pleasant young man Joshua.  We stated our price range and wanted a gray Berber carpet and took two samples home.  We decided which to get and called to share our choice.  Joshua checked that it was in stock and stated he would have a roll put on order for us the upcoming Monday and call when it arrives. We paid 50% down on the phone via a credit card.  I shared we had checked them out on Angie's List and we were using an Angie's discount coupon and they said fine and figured it into the price. They are good at selling.

Their measurement person came as promised and presented a diagram and plan including new matching color threshold strips as needed where carpet met tile. They were good at measuring.

When we did not hear that the carpet had arrived nor set a date to install by the next Friday, July 15th, we called and Joshua then made calls and arranged the installation date for the next Tuesday, July 19th.

The installers came on time and went to work.  What they did not do was vacuum 15 years of dirt before putting down the new carpet.  I expressed concern before they continued onto the other two rooms and was told it was not necessary because of the padding.  I stated I was asthmatic and would appreciate the vacuuming in the remaining rooms...it was not done.

Before beginning work my husband and I shared that he had tools and screws ready to tighten a few spots where the floor squeaked and we asked to be told when they had emptied the back room so that he could take 5 minutes to do that.  They did not, so we now have the squeaks and a new carpet we do not want to put screws through.

Our order included gray matching thresholds for the two bathrooms where the carpets meet tile and were told that they would not work here even though the man who measured discussed them.  We then were told that the flooring was not even enough to use those so he could put on new metal ones but new holes might crack the tiles.  We obviously choose not to make new holes and take the chance of breaking the tiles.

Another surprise was being asked for approximately $2000.00 COD from the installers.  No mention had been made about that.
We stated we would rather finish paying Rexx where we ordered.

I was so upset I waited rather than call the store.  I assumed they would call and ask how all had gone; nope, no call that day.

The next day the store called and I expressed my concerns and disappointment. I explained that there seemed to be a lack of communication and that we now had new carpet over much filth and a room with squeaks after asking for 5-10 minutes to fix them.  Magda said she was surprised.  She also asked for the final payment.  She charged the remainder and said she would talk with the installers.

Well it has been more than a week and hearing nothing back I am writing as a disappointed customer.  I can not recommend
going to Rexx Carpet. They were great on selling, but not on calling back as promised.  After emptying and moving four closets,
two bookcases, and an entire office and spending $4,000.00 we expected to be thrilled, not disappointed.

Response from REXX RUG
"It is clear that things did not go well with the installer. This customer does state "I was so upset I waited rather than call the store." We could have and would have addressed every issue, but we were only informed after the fact. We are very responsive when given the chance to respond. My aplogies to this customer. Each job was completed in a very professional way, with NO hitches. The quotes are fair and the service is impeccable. Perhaps because it is family owned, with the family still working at the store, is why they care so much about the quality of the work. I have complete faith in how they will carry out any job and that they have their "heart" in their work. They are everything you could want in a retailer.

I called Rexx Rug and talked with Neil to get a quote and discuss options for carpeting in the garden (basement) level of our newly-purchased (duplex) condo. Within just a few hours of my initial call on a Saturday afternoon, Neil personally delivered (!) a giant bag of carpet samples based on our conversation where I indicated what I was looking for. While these were all very nice and affordable, I wanted to explore eco-friendly options, so we went into the store on Lincoln Ave the next day. At the store, we were greeted by Josh who was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and personable. We liked and chose an eco-friendly, sustainable, low-pile sisal-look wool carpeting that the store carried as one of their stock wool carpets, so we were able to purchase it for far less than other wool carpets we really liked, but couldn't afford. (Neil worked up the formal quote for two different carpeting options plus the work on the hardwoods and emailed the reasonable estimates within a day or two.) The floor screening, carpet tear-up & installation were then scheduled. First, we had the existing hardwoods lightly screened with two coats of polyurethane by Cody, a Rexx Rug contractor. Cody was very professional, courteous & kind but it was challenging communicating with him at times (mainly in reference to scheduling/performing the work.) After the second (and final) coat of low-odor polyurethane was applied to the hardwoods, we observed a milky-colored "whitewash" arc on the floor. Since we weren't sure if this mark was there before the work on the hardwoods started, Cody explained that he could try to buff it out by hand, but that there was a chance it could affect the appearance/texture of the overall finish on the floor in that particular section since it would be repaired by hand. Not wanting to take the risk of making a small blemish a considerably larger one, we decided to just leave it alone (it's really not noticeable unless you're standing immediately in front of it.) Now that some time has passed following completion of the work, I've also noticed several small (old, former condo owner) paint speckles which could have been buffed out before the polyurethane was applied; however, I will assume partial responsibility for that for not personally inspecting the floors more thoroughly in advance of the work. Overall, the hardwoods look amazing and we're REALLY glad we had them redone *before* we moved in-- they look and feel like new. The carpet installation then took place a week later after the floors were finished curing, and things there went smoothly. Our entire basement level was re-carpeted in one day, which was perfect because we were scheduled to move in the *very next* day! The installers were also courteous and polite, and did a nice job with clean-up. We love the new wool carpet-- a great choice for us. Overall, we were pleased with our Rexx Rug experience and appreciated their competitive pricing and that we could have ALL the flooring projects handled by a single service provider in a time of chaos/stress typical with the purchase of and impending move to a new home. All throughout, Neil was very communicative, responsive, professional, and extremely patient with my incessant flooring-related questions. We are very particular (picky!) and cautious consumers and spent A LOT of time researching vendors, options and products beforing choosing Rexx and making a sizable investment in our flooring. I plan to visit their store again in the future to look into custom area rugs, as they had a great selection of options for that, as well. Recommended & would use this family-run business again! Thank you.

Rexx was very helpful and easy to work with. They explained the different kinds of carpets they offer and suggested different selections, keeping in mind my overall budget. They let me order as many samples as I liked to take home. The installers arrived on time and were very professional. They took care in removing my furniture from the rooms and were careful to put it all back in the exact same spot. The new carpet looks great.

The carpet looks fantastic--the border is perfect for us--we don't like ornate borders, so we chose a solid color to go with the central pattern. Neil was right on with the size of the border he suggested when he measured the room. The quality is great, installation was smooth and we are very pleased. At the time we bought the material, the Euro was strong--and the material was expensive, but such is life. Needless to say, Rexx Rug will be our source for all our carpet and flooring in the future. Actually, we already ordered honed limestone from them to redo our elevator foyer floor, and the material is beautiful.

Jose worked with two other men to install the the carpeting. The installation went very smoothly although it took quite awhile (more than an 8-hour day) to do the 13 stairs on the steel circular staircase as each step was done individually and there was considerable drying time for the adhesive. The installation was not easy as each piece had to be wrapped around the stair, then custom cut to fit on each individual stair with the edges wrapped under to give a very nice finished look to the installation. Each piece was then taken off the and the adhesive applied and the carpet held in place by hand until the adhesive glued the piece to the stair. The work was done very professionally without a mess. Some of the carpeting pieces separated from the metal steps and Jose came back a few times to rectify the situation. Very pleasant to work with.

They did a very good job. Everything was positive the only thing that is bad is that they had messed up their estimate. They gave me a bid much lower than it turned out being and never offered any resolution, but I found the price to be okay. They did call and apologized. They were very fast and responsive. They found me a high quality carpet at a good price.

The job was very well done! The price was the lowest of 3 estimates that I received and they were very flexible and understanding about what I needed. The work was done with a lot of care and they made sure that I got exactly what I wanted. I was undecided about how I wanted the landing done so they took the time to show me my options. I am completely happy with the results and would definitely use Rexx Rug for any future carpeting or flooring needs.
