The project was done well; but Power really came through when one of the owners "challenged" the method used as incorrect and against code. (This owner is not a plumber). Dave, the foreman immediately volunteered to meet with that owner and other interested owners face to face to discuss the procedure and the Chicago building code. Within 2 minutes of that meeting, Dave proved the the procedure used and addressed the stated concerns of that owner. Dave even lent his wrench so this owner could scrape the area of the pipes in question in an attempt to prove him wrong. Stepping up to back up their work is worth what they were paid.
Description of Work: The master valve in our condo building was failing. We opted to combine replacing the valve and moving the master valve from an owner's unit to the comman area. This required installing a new master valve in the common area and replacing some of the old piping in the basement with new pipes.

My initial call was answered by an operator who took down my contact information and problem details. I was told someone would contact me in 2 business days to schedule a visit for an estimate. Patrick called 5 business days later and arranged a visit for the following day to assess the situation and give me an estimate. After leaving work early and racing home to assure that I was at my house at the time of the scheduled appointment, Patrick never showed up. I called and an operator again took down my information and said someone would contact me immediately. No one returned my phone call until the FOLLOWING day when a message was left on my cell phone indicating that I was the one who made a scheduling mistake. (The problem I have with this accusation is that I was at work when Patrick called me and I logged and saved the appointment directly into my calendar as I spoke with him. I also put Patrick on hold while I immediately checked with my employer if it was OK to leave early and then confirmed with Patrick that I would be available at the time. So while, yes, I am human and do make mistakes, the odds are the scheduling mistake was not mine.) Apparently, Power Plumbing & Sewer doesn't value anyone else's time but their own and respect for prospective customers is non-existent.

The guys pulled up 5 minutes before out appointment and got right to it. The blockage filled up the entire length of the 25' long drain. They worked the water jet from the catch basin and from the down spout, and broke out a rodder and a shop vac to finally get it cleared. They recommended emptying the basin by hand instead of getting a vacuum truck in (it only took me 30 minutes to scoop up the 20 or so gallons of fine black dirt that had been blocking things). It took them way longer to clear it, and cost a little more than I'd hoped - but when I consider the ease and cleanliness that they had and the good service and maintenance tips they offered, I gotta say they are worth it. The potential damage would have been more, and other neighborhood plumbers well known in Evanston said it would have to be dug up or abandoned. So given that, they worked a small miracle!
Description of Work: Cleared an underground drain from the garage downspout. It had been packed full of dirt so long, we didn't know if it could ever be cleared or if it had to be dug up.

I had a leaking water heater in my 2nd floor condo and called Power Plumbing first. I had to call back as they did not return my message right away, but was glad I did. Rae quoted me $500 for the water heater, $150 for misc materials and a range of $440 to $855 for labor. Total estimated cost range was $1,090 to $1,500 and a little on the high side. I got a competing estimate from another vendor but called Rae back as she had been much more helpful and attentive on the phone. She worked with me on price, gave me a contractor rate on the labor, and agreed to cap the price, assuming the job was as described by me (i.e. no obstructions or pipe reworking). The workers arrived promptly, approximately 2 hours after my initial call, were courteous, and very professional. Not only did they come in well under the revised estimate, but they to added a drain pan and routed it to a nearby floor drain to prevent future damage to my wood floors. I could not be happier with the job, start to finish, and would use them again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: Power Plumbing removed my leaking water heater and installed a new one. Worse than the water heater going bad, I was getting some water damage on my wood floors nearby and needed this fixed quickly.

During heavy rain, an outside drain plugged up and overflowed, sending water under door into basement. They came out and got it rodded out and flowing again. So far so good. But while they were there, they checked the flood control unit in the front yard (the electrical switch for it was flickering, so they checked to make sure it was working). After first saying it wasn't getting power, they said that in fact it was fine, but we should have an electrician check the flickering light on the switch. Two days later there was a water main break on our block, and we got water in the basement again. This time the drain was fine, but they had forgotten to plug in the pump in the flood control unit outside, so nothing could drain to the street, due to the water main break. The pump would have forced it into the city sewer system, but instead it just backed up into the house. I plugged it in myself and it immediately started pumping and clearing our drains. I called Power Plumbing to tell them what happened, and Ray, a manager there, was very sympathetic and willing to extend a credit. I had another small plumbing job to do anyway, so I asked for a discount on the next job, which she sounded willing to do. She would also get in touch with the plumber and find out what happened. However, when the original plumber called back to explain the error with the pump, he was so condescending and unhelpful (he was the same way when he was there the first time - we had checked the catch-basin when the clog occurred and it was fine, so we knew it was just a clog at the drain, but he kept suggesting it might have been caused by other things, which is why he started messing with the flood control pump in the first place), we just decided to forget it and call a different company for future jobs. So overall I gave them a middling grade, since Ray and the company seemed fine, and it was likely one bad employee.

Called to schedule and woman was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and clearly explained how the company operates and how they handle pricing. Technician arrived as scheduled, explained the problem clearly and what needed to be done to repair. Completed the repair quickly and effectively. Even recommended another company to us for additional work that needs to be done as a result of the leak. Was considerate about not tracking dirt/debris through the house.

The kitchen leak was fixed in less than 2 minutes. I then asked the plumber to look at something else (since I had paid for an hour of his time) and he said that he would need to come back to look at the outdoor faucet as the end of his shift was near. I will not use this firm again.

I had initially called them for two jobs. I had drips in my bathroom tap and in my kitchen taps. The plumber from Power plumbing said he was not allowed by law to fix the tap in my bathtub because it was an older tap and could potentially scald someone who was showering at the same as someone flushing the toilet. He said it couldn't be worked on at all and he wouldn't even touch it and he would not even come into the bathroom. I called another plumber and he fixed the tap for me for $100 and it was only a washer that needed replacing. The plumber from Power plumbing did say my piping on my water heater was not up to code, so I did have him fix that.

Came out for an estimate in 2 days; explained my options; plumbers were there the next day; everything works great now. Couldn't ask for more.
Description of Work: Sink waste drain was cleared/rootered, catch basin cleared/rootered; sewer line cleared/rootered. Purchased a 100+ year old 2-flat graystone. From day one the top floor kitchen sink drained extremely slow. I rootered the waste line myself, but all that did was push the clog obstruction down to below the 1st floor sink. Since the waste drain was blocked, water started to rise into the vent stack. This exposed a hole/leak in the vent stack. Power came out 2 days later to quote me on repairing the vent stack. This would be a huge (i.e. expensive) project. Option B would be to completely clean out the waste drain system, avoiding any clogs and backup- and any leaking caused by the back ups. 2 guys came out, on time, and rootered my whole system. The job was quoted at 3-4 hours, but only took 2.5 hrs. Discounted hourly rate for Angie's List members. Everyone was courteous and answered all my questions.

Very well. They also diagnosed a leak and will be returning to repair it at a later date. The finish of the job was very neat and tidy. The only (albeit minor) critique was the confusion about getting us a final invoice. Once we received it, it was precisely as budgeted/estimated and we paid it!

My hot water heater was leaking when I got home after work on a Monday. On Tuesday morning, I called two plumbers. The first couldn t slot me in until the afternoon. She also couldn t provide an estimate to me over the phone for what a 40 gallon gas hot water heater replacement would run me. I called Power just after 8am. Rae was awesome! Rae immediately asked what the problem was. When I told her it was leaking from the bottom, she immediately told me that it most likely would need to be replaced. Then she asked me for the gallon size and the BTU. She put me on hold and when she came back she walked me through the cost of a new tank ($400 for 40 gallon, 40,000 BTU), the cost for additional parts that would be needed and also the labor rate per hour including a total for minimum of 4 hours and max of 8 hours of labor. Less than 45 minutes later, a Bob and Andre arrived. They were great. They had to unhook and move my stacked washer-dryer to the hall to get at the tank. Then they drained the tank, unhooked it, brought the new one in, and reconnected it. They also had to re-pipe the hot line as the new heater was 4 taller than the old one. 2:15 minutes later they were done. Well under the low end of the estimated time of four hours given to me by Rae. I m sure I could have spent a lot of time researching more efficient replacements or perhaps better pricing, but this was an emergency situation. And the fact that I got great service and such reasonable price even when I was desperate for help makes Power a stand-up company in my estimation. Total cost $985.75. Based on other customer reviews for a variety of hot water heater replacements with other companies on Angie s List I was estimating cost would be $900 - $1200. I recommend them with no hesitation and will definitely use them again.

I called to make an appointment when I noticed the leak. When the leak seemed to get worse, I called to inquire about an emergency visit. Rather than coming for an emergency visit (and thus hundreds of dollars) the plumber called me himself to tell me to turn off the water and wait for my scheduled appointment. The honesty of the plumber saved me hundreds of dollars I'm sure! Jesse came out today and fixed the leaky toilet. He was personable and professional.

We had 2 other services come out to quote the job and found their prices much higher than Power Plumbing. Due to the difference in price, we questioned the service they recommend but he assured us that it was a simple job and didn't know why the other shops were quoting such high prices and work time. He did the job in less than an hour compared to the approximate 3 hours quoted by other shops at a great price. We would definitely try again.
