Negative was the workers emptying materials in bathroom sink, my smoke detector was not able to be rehung properly with the compound used and some of the paint and wood work has already started to crack and peel.

 + -1 moreI needed to install a round handrail along the wall of the stairs that go from my 1st to 2nd floor. I needed a handyman to do it, and my usual guy was on vacation. I called several handymen in Angie's list and Bucktown Home Maintenance replied to my call promptly. They quoted me $110 for a 2 person crew for up to 1 hour of work and if more time was necessary, they would bill it in 15 min intervals. I hired them because the price was reasonable, having two people doing the job almost guaranteed that it could not take much time to complete, and they had the available space to do it within my time frame - I wanted it installed before my 91 year old father-in-law came to visit . The day of the work they arrived on time and did a good job. The brackets were properly attached to the wall which is a difficult wall to work with, but the top of the railing itself creaks a little, if I move it in a certain direction, as it seems it is not well attached to one of the 4 brackets, so the B in quality. It is so small I did not notice until a few days later. IN summary they were responsive, punctual, professional and likely would use again.

 + -1 moreCalled to find out if they could do some simple electrical and plumbing jobs in my home, probably 2 to 3 hours of work. The person who took my call could not have been less interested in the job, but suggested someone could swing by that afternoon. I was at work, and was trying to schedule something in advance, so I couldn't take them up in it. He couldn't commit to a day or time, and said they would call me back to let me know when they could send someone out. Never heard back from them.

 + 0 moreoverall no problems. Workers met us that morning and completed the work in a very short time. They even cleaned up afterwards. The owner came by afterwards and inspected it.
Description of Work: We had them replace a interior door to our store. I thought it a bit pricey, but it had to be custom ordered due to size. The owner responded the same day with quote, after coming by, and the install was done as soon as the door was received.

 + -1 morehey have a tall ladder and they got up to the second floor and found a crack in the caulking above the window. I also had them caulk a door on my roof which also developed a leak. The next week we had some big storms and I had no leaks.
Description of Work: I had water leakage on a second floor window so I had them caulked the top of the second floor window for me. They where here one time and the worked properly and the leak has gone away. I have used Bucktown in the past and I was comfortable calling them back.

He finished 30 min early and reviewed all the work completed before cleaning up. The work was done to perfection - and w/in the range I expected to pay. I highly recommend Handyman Matters.

 + -1 moreUnfortunately, there were so many excellent Angie's list reviews I trusted the job would be well done and for a fair deal. I'm wondering if these 40 + reviews were from friends as we did not have a successful experience. First, there were organizational problems. I wasn't even given a time when the guys were to show up and was startled when two men I didn't know were knocking at my door. I've worked with several handymen/people in service and don't mind too much when organizational things aren't perfect. It's about the job for a fair price. So organization aside, there were 2 guys at my house for roughly 4 hours and my shower needed a new cartridge. I was told the cost of a new cartridge was $200 and as described earlier the job cost $700 in total. Be very wary of these folks. My suspicion is they give certain customers or friends a better rate and then they are asked to write Angie's list reviews. If you don't fit into this category, or know a lot about handy work, you will pay a high premium for poor service.
Description of Work: I called Barry and his crew to fix a leaking shower head, do some grout touch up, tighten up a faucet handle, and tighten up the base of our toilet. The total cost for service was $700 for all of these things. My toilet is still a little wobbily and the sink handle is comparatively much tighter than the other one. These aren't huge problems for me, but what I wish to convey is that for a premium price one should expect premium service. The most discouraging thing about this service was that when changing the shower cartridge it really ruined our temperature settings. We now have to keep moving the handle back to get a hot shower. Barry came to take a look and gave me a long lecture about my water tank and how the two issues were "unrelated." We have never had problems with our temperature for over 2 years and I find it highly unbelievable that the day they install a new cartridge, taking my shower apart, that our current problem is "unrelated." I am regretting not calling a plumber and believe the job could have been completed successfully and for a much less cost. Now we have to call a plumber and pay double for something that should have been done very well for such a steep price.

 + -1 moreBarry's crew was hired to replace a very drafty kitchen window and exterior door. Both where very old and letting in a lot of cold air. The door not only needed to be replaced, but the door jab needed repair. Despite the building being very old and nothing was square they did the job perfectly. They are very skilled handymen that solved the problem with the door and window. Once they installed everything there was a dramatic difference in the kitchen. During the winter it always stayed warm and did not feel a single draft.
Description of Work: Barry and his crew replaced a kitchen window and door for me in my vintage apartment. Not an easy job in an older place where nothing is square. His crew installed a new window and door perfectly. They where always on time, very professional and did the job for the price quoted. I would highly recommend using Bucktown Home Maintenance.

 + 1 moreVery satisfied. This is the second time I've used them for urgent service and they are very responsive. With this job, they were able to come out the next day to perform the service. Time was of the essence as we were about to begin some renovations to our house and I didn't want to pay an exorbitant amount to have the GC on our renovation do this with the work set to begin on a new closet layout. Bucktown's estimate was much better than what we had heard from others and they were very communicative on what would need to be done. They continued to call me with updates and questions once they were in to perform the service (I was at work). Actual amount that we paid came in below the estimate (does that ever happen?)!
Description of Work: Removal of an old and clunkly steam shower unit in our master BR closet along with the removal of pipes leading from steam unit into wall to the bathroom.

 + 1 moreI own a condo building in the city which I rent out. The condo was burglarized and there was damage to the locks and door frame. I called a number of companies trying to get one to come out as soon as possible. Barry was able to come out and assess the damage later that evening. He came at almost 9pm. I could not be at the condo to meet him at that time, but he called me and updated me on what exactly needed to be done and what it cost. His guys came the next day to complete the job. Barry called me when the job was over to make sure I was satisfied. The frame is as good as new. The door is now more solid and secure than it was before. I will be definitely using this company again.
Description of Work: Repaired the front door frame. Installed an extra reinforced deadbolt.

 + 3 moreBarry, the owner, was very responsive to my request for service and the handymen were professional and did a great job. They stand behind their work. When the repair to my gararge door did not last, Barry had his men come back out to correct the repair without charge or fuss. I will use them again.
Description of Work: I've used Bucktown three times. The first time I used them to adjust my garage (person) door which gets stuck during winter. For this visit (2nd), they installed lighing in my office, support/grab bars in my shower, install some collection cabinets. In July 2012, I had them install lighting in my garage and clean the gangway of weeds.
