This is the second time we've used A&M remodeling. We had a very good experience the first time and certainly have nothing to complain about this second time around! Martin and his team are very easy to work with and put in very long hours to get the job done. Martin is extremely flexible and offers good advice. His prices are super reasonable and they do great work. Martin and his team are reliable and trustworthy and we would recommend them to anyone looking to get some work done in their home!
Description of Work: Replaced bottom foot of drywall in basement. Installed new door frame/trim. Leveled our bathroom floor and moved some plumbing around for us.

I roughly mapped out the dimensions of the room and the closet. I did not measure but assumed the contractors would build the closet to code. They did not. They built it according to my rough sketch on the floor. I was disappointed to know they did not measure and took my unlicensed opinion. I shouldn't have made an assumption. Also, the person I spoke to on the phone spoke English very well but the workers he sent did not speak English at all. They had to call him on the phone so he could translate. I would have preferred an English speaking person on site OR had the main contractor do a walk-through with me, the owner, before the workers got started, then translated everything after fully seeing and understanding what I wanted done exactly. Trying to explain directions on the phone isn't as effective as showing them in person. I would use their services again but I would make sure to have our initial meeting in person first. They weren't terrible, but efficient, professional, hardworking and quick!
Description of Work: Divided a large room into 2 separate bedrooms. Added 2 doors and a closet.

Martin and his crew were wonderful and easy to work with. He came out quickly to provide an estimate that was very competitive. His workers always arrived on time and worked consistently until the job was done. Everyone was extremely polite and pleasant. Martin frequently initiated communication to find out how things were going and checked in often. We wanted to keep a few items that were in the bathroom and he helped us figure out how to incorporate the new fixtures and pieces flawlessly. Martin made recommendations for placement of fixtures which was challenging because our bath is quite small. . Martin solved the problem of our leaky tub that had been going on for a long time. The new tile was installed even and the spacing and grout lines very exact. The taping was done beautifully so we had them do some work in the family room that another contractor did not do well. It looks great. We had them paint then too and the job was done neatly and the clean up was outstanding. When I could not find a mirror I liked due to size constraints, Martin graciously offered to let me take as long as I needed to find one that I liked. Then he came back to install it a couple of weeks after the job was completed. We truly appreciated his commitment and dedication to making sure the job looked amazing and that we were happy with the results. Guest have told me that the bathroom now looks like one in a 4 star hotel. We plan to have him do our kitchen next!
Description of Work: Update a bathroom.

It went very well. Martin and his team were a pleasure to work with from our first phone call to completion of the job.
Description of Work: Martin and his team were extremely courteous and professional. They did quality work. We contacted Martin for a wide range of smaller issues that have appropriately arisen in our home ten years post last rehab. They worked efficiently. The product was very good. The pricing was fair. We have already contacted him to do additional work.

I met Martin in January 2013 to have him estimate the project, and he was super helpful from the start. He answered all of my questions and offered details on the number of days the job may take, insight on what previous repair jobs might have included, and his thoughts on what type of paint would be best to finish the room(s) off. Weeks after he supplied the proposal (which was about $2,000 less than other quotes I received), he followed up with me to see if I was still considering the project. I agreed to move forward with him because of his professionalism, price, and strong Angie's List grades. The 1st day of the project Martin walked his 2-man crew through my home with me to cover all of my needs. They spent the first 2.5 days repairing dry wall and would clean up at the close of each day. The crew was super polite, very efficient, and skilled. They didn't cut any corners and made sure everything was done to perfection. If I asked for updates, they were happy to discuss plans with me. By day 4, they had started painting and by mid day on day 5 they were done with two coats on everything. It looks like a new home! We are thrilled to have found Martin and my husband and I are already planning our second project with A&M Remodeling Co!
Description of Work: My husband and I had caulk and paint peeling from the seams of our main room and kitchen in addition to several ceiling cracks in the bedroom. In addition to the dry wall repair, we had the entire space painted including our cathedral ceilings and stairwell.

In the end the tile backsplash turned out fine, but it took much longer and was much more expensive than I anticipated or than I think it needed to be.
Description of Work: I purchased the deal with A&M remodeling for $175 for 4 hours of tilework to help with my kitchen backsplash. Martin was very friendly on the phone and quick with getting back to me. On the day the work started, the workers showed up really late which in turn made me late to work. Without consulting us, they decided to do the tile in such a way that they had to cut both the top and the bottom rows of the backsplash which caused more work and more time than anticipated. Additionally, when they first did the tilework, several of the tiles were crooked and the grout was cracked. When we brought this to Martin's attention, re-tiled it, which I really appreciated it. The only other issue I had was that they through the grout water on my plants in the backyard.

I wasn't ready to do a complete remodel of my kitchen but wanted to do a few updates like adding a dishwasher to the original kitchen which required having to modify the original cabinets. Even though this wasn't a huge kitchen remodel, Martin and his crew were very responsive and helpful from start to finish. Martin also remained conscious of my budget which I really appreciated, and he made great suggestions. They were always on time, courteous, and cleaned up everyday. The quality of the work was excellent, and Martin and team always answered any questions that I had. I appreciated the care that they took with the project. Martin came by multiple times including at the end to check how things were going - he also called me throughout to check in to make sure I was happy. I'm very, very happy with the way my kitchen looks now. Someday I'll get new cabinets, but I'm so happy with the kitchen now that I'll be able to focus on other projects before I worry about the kitchen again.
Description of Work: All the work was in my kitchen: Modified cabinet to install a dishwasher (no dishwasher previously) including electrical and plumbing. Replaced countertop with butcher block countertop. Removed soffit and existing backsplash. Tiled backsplash. Installed pendant light including repairing the old wiring to that light. Painted the walls, ceiling and cabinets.

I dealt with the owner, Martin, and he was professional, curtious and had strong follow up. Martin quoted the work before hand and was flexible as my schedule changed. When the work started, he had a crew of 3 guys that helped complete the work and Martin would stop in throughout the day to check on progress. His crew was nice and worked non-stop. At the end of everyday, they would clean up after themselves as if they had not been there that day. Overall the workmanship was very detailed and I would recommend A&M Remodeling.

They did an excellent job and it looks beautiful. They were very responsive and dealt with any concerns I had promptly and professionally. I am a very detail oriented person, and they did a great job with the details even down to laying the random marbling pattern in the kitchen tile to look like it follows the veining across the kitchen. They did beautiful work making a old house where nothing is straight or at right angles any more look like it is. I will definitely hire them again when I need a contractor & recommend them to anyone who needs work done.
Description of Work: We had them come and pull out the old floor in our kitchen and two bathrooms then install ceramic tile. They put down concrete board under their tiling, installed large ceramic tiles on the 45 in the kitchen, and 1" hex tiles in both bathrooms. they also installed ceramic baseboards in all 3 rooms and thresholds at the doorways. When the found a rotten patch of sub-floor they replaced it.

Great! Martin did a detailed walk-through with me before the project started in order to determine the materials needed and the general work outline, and came on site every day through construction. Saul, who did much of the actual construction, was a perfectionist, and his work paid off. Yes, it meant that I had to live with a tile saw in the middle of the living room for a few days, but the end result was worth it. The guys always cleaned up at the end of each day. Martin's advice was always excellent, and definitely shaped the project for the better. I'm very pleased with the result, and would definitely hire A&M again.
Description of Work: I bought a "big deal" coupon to have A&M redo my fireplace and facade, including ripping out and replacing built-in cabinets, completing the refinishing of the 13-foot mantle that I had started years ago, building out the uneven brick fire surround, and tiling over it with thick slate stacked tiles. Although I created the design, Martin selected the wood for the bookcases based on my suggestions, and worked closely with me to modify the design to fit the reality of the room's peculiarities.

Martin had to come to our home a few times as the details of our project kept changing. He was good natured about this, and very responsive to questions and comments. He gave good advice along the way and was very effective in supervising and instructing his workers, to the extent they needed it. The A&M team were friendly and hard-working, arriving on time and working consistently throughout the day. Their attention to detail and workmanship were excellent. The electrician on the team demonstrated a high level of professionalism in dealing with the shoddy work performed in remodeling by a previous owner. He had to come back at a later time because all the needed parts were not available for installation of the ceiling fans, and he did this without complaining. We would re-use A&M in a heartbeat and will consider them when we remodel our kitchen.
Description of Work: Martin's team provided a number of services in support of a remodeling project: Replaced all doors, installing and painting, hauled away the old ones; repaired and repainted severely damaged metal door frames and the door to our HVAC cabinet, enlarged openings in two walls, which in one case involved extensive rerouting of electrical wiring and remediation of previously poorly done wiring (ka-ching, ka-ching). They installed can lights in the hallway, hardwired bedside lights in the bedroom, and installed two ceiling fans. Added several new electrical outlets.

Working with A&M was an amazing experience. I called regarding water that leaked through the ceiling of a rental unit. Martin was able to schedule an appointment to meet me the next morning. He came out, gave me an estimate, and even explained to me the process of working with my insurance company (which was completely accurate). A few months later, after the holidays, I finally scheduled Martin to start working. Between the date of his initial estimate and the time he started the work, a few things were added to the list of repairs. First, more water leaked through as a result of the pipe repair. Also, my tenant accidentally put a small hole in the wall which needed to be repaired. Martin took a look at the additions and said, "This isn't so bad. We'll just stick with the original cost estimate." What!? I couldn't believe that a contractor was going to throw in free work. It was such a relief, especially b/c the insurance company had already sent a check. When I asked for a time estimate, Martin said it would take 3 days. It ended up taking only 2 days and my tenants could not have been happier, both to have the work completed and with the quality of the work. I will definitely work with A&M Remodeling again and highly recommend it to my friends when they ask for recommendations. Very, very happy customer!

The experience started positive, but the project did not end well. The problem arisen when they opened the wall as required, closed it, mudded it, painted it, but did not do any required work inside the wall. Few weeks later, the problem was discovered by investigative work on the other side of the wall - this other side was tiled. The owner accused us for not making sure that his workers did the job properly, and then he became unresponsive. Until then he was responsive and pleasant and the workers were pleasant and did good work.

Overall it went great. Martin was very patient with the building management office, which was very particular and ended up delaying the project by a few weeks. Martin has opinions although you need to be prepared with your own ideas - he will guide ideas but not necessarily the type to suggest something or provide options - other than working with your ideas. Rates seemed very reasonable.
Description of Work: Renovation of small (converted one bedroom) downtown condo. Removed existing tile and carpeting and instaled laminate wood floor. Installed drywall and framing to change a few room dividing walls, including framing out a new doorway that separated living room from bedroom. Martin was very responsive and helpful with the initial questions, from what I needed to purchase, to recommended stores, to the process. He was up front about the costs, which ended up being spot on accurate. He even bumped a personal appointment so that I could have a Saturday installation sooner rather than later. Also, I purchase a big deal from Angie's list and Martin assured me that he would honor it after its expiration date, which he did. The tile installer Martin sent was very nice and took care to put down protective covering so that when he went back and forth from my kitchen to the back patio, where he was doing the tile cutting, he wouldn't scratch the floors. He did a great job and really seemed like he took pride in the finished product. Overall, a great experience.

I purchased a Groupon for 4 hours of tiling for $175. I called Martin, the owner of A&M, and told him I was looking to re-tile our fireplace. I received a callback right away and we were able to set up time for Martin to come and look at our fireplace within a few days. We had received quotes ranging from $250 -- $900+ to re-tile the fireplace and all of the others told of possible complications, which I felt was setting us up for extra work and extra charges. Martin said we could do the job and I asked him about some other jobs around the house. He said we'd just do the same rate as the Groupon and we set up a day to start the work within a week of originally calling him. Martin came over with two workers on the first day and explained what they were to do. I added extra work along the way and they were happy to oblige. The total work took about 4 days and everything looked great. One of the men seemed to know what he was doing more than the other worker and had to stop his job a lot to help out the other guy, so I'm not sure that hiring two men and double the rate helped expedite the work too much, but I was happy enough with the way it all worked out. We even called Martin to hire one of the men to hang cabinets in our living room. He did an excellent job and when I thought a cabinet wasn't set up correctly, Martin came to take a look at it, "fixed it", and explained how it worked to me so I could do it myself later. I think hourly jobs are difficult because there is always a question as to how long the work takes and whether it should have taken less time. I'm not sure I got an incredibly discounted offer with the Groupon, but I do know that the work was quality work, Martin was very responsive, and I felt very comfortable paying what we paid for all the work done.

I contacted AM Remodeling and discussed our plans for using the Big Deal. Martin was very responsive came to our home to go over the job. He also stated we could continue past the 40 hours for the same rate if we wanted to continue with more projects. The two workers that were sent were professional, courteous, helpful and prompt. They also did excellent work. We had a lot of drywall work done as well as building a wall and adding closet doors. There was also a lot of trim painting that was done. We used AM remodeling for another 40 hours and Martin honored the Angie's List Big Deal price for the additional time. We were very pleased with the quality of the work completed.

The team was quick, neat, quiet and friendly and the price was terrific. He extended a deal rate to us to finish up additional work so - since the price couldn't be beat! - we ended up knocking quiet a few things off our to-do list with his team. My only criticism would be that in a few small places we could have used another coat of paint, but I'm not sure his team would have noticed that in the time that they did the work. Overall the work was really, very good and we are totally pleased! We have hired them again to do some additional drywall and framing work in our sun room.

This is an update to a previous review. A&M quickly responded to my initial contact. Somehow my response telling them when I would be available to come look at my project went astray, and they did not respond until I posted a very negative review. Thereupon Martin reacted quickly and professionally, making no excuses, simply offering an apology for what had occurred and asking what he could do to make it right. Based on this I invited him to visit my home and propose on my project, which he has done. He is the first of three contractors I contacted to get back to me with a detailed proposal and has been very accommodating in working with me to tweak it as ideas about the project have changed. He made the proposal easy for me to review by organizing it in the same way I organized my statement of the work I wanted done. It remains to be seen which of the three contractors I am talking to will be selected, but based on the experience so far, there would be no barrier to working with Martin.

After my husband and I purchased our home, we set out to do a TON of little projects throughout the house. After about 3 years of all of our projects piling up, we decided we needed help. We both work full time and I'm going to school full time, there was no way we were going to get all this stuff done on our own. I called A&M b/c of the reviews here on Angie's List. I wanted to stick with a smaller, local company, as opposed to a larger corporation that was going to charge me for their overhead. I didn't realize at the time I called Martin, the owner, that they are located in Chicago - I am in the west suburbs, probably almost an hour away, but he still came out (on time) to give me a quote. I gave Martin QUITE the honey-do list, but he had no problems with any of the things we needed done. We scheduled for his guys to come about 2 weeks later and it took them 4 full days to complete all the work I mentioned. We had only anticipated it would take 2 days, but Martin stated he wasn't going to push the guys to go faster, he wanted them to do the work correct so I was satisfied. We are definitely happy with ALL of the work they did. The guys were nice, they asked me about things if they had questions instead of just doing it w/out my input. Our back door was probably my biggest concern, b/c we've always had issues with it. One guy must've spent almost an entire day just to do this door. He added in some drywall, did plastering around the door, it looks absolutely gorgeous! He put foam all around the door for insulation, he really did an awesome job and making sure this door was 100%. Originally, I called Feldco about our door and we were quoted $2500. So, after all was said and done, to buy the door on our own and have A&M install, we probably spent around $500 total. We even received a quote for a bathroom we need to have gutted in the future. When the time comes for us to take on that project, we will definitely be calling A&M for the job and for any job in the future we may need done. I'm so thankful we have finally found HONEST workers that just want to do a good job instead of doing sloppy work to make a buck.
Description of Work: Paint 4 ceilings - 3 bedrooms & living room Put together & Install 2 ceiling fans Install a closet rack/organizer Paint my entire downstairs living room - top to bottom, literally Install blinds - 5 total Install 5 shelves - 2 of which were over 50 lbs each Remove old door/install a new one along w/the doorknob & trim Fix a vent - the drywall was torn and vent was hanging in the ceiling by a string Install a new water spicket Install 2 outdoor lights - replacements - wiring was already there I think that's about it :) The amount we spent above also included some cost for materials. My husband and I purchased about half of the materials on our own, just as some of the paint and door trim, etc. All in all for all the materials and labor, we probably spent closer to $2750.
