First of all, I believe that HomeAdvisor has Smart Tek Success located in Carpentersville. The located in Barrington. This is important because the closer the business is the less time on the road and therefore the lower his cost to do the job. Let's talk about Smart Tek. The guy gave me an estimate of $300 for the antenna install over the phone (not in person). Sloppiness #1 He came and installed a medium rang roof antenna which included the coaxial cable and amplifier. The cable install was professional although I helped him it from the upstairs into the basement. The antenna itself was a small disk with 2 opposing short wings (a really stupid looking thing). But of course if it worked, what difference would it really make. The small size of the antenna was obviously chose by the installer for his ease of installation. The problem was that I could get CBS (channel 2.1) with the new antenna where as I could with the old antenna. The assumption is the installer has enough expertise to install the correct antenna the first time around. He then said that he would install a longer rang antenna and that although the new antenna was the same price as the other I would be charged $20. In other words I was to pay him $20 for his mistake. He didn't give me any work order of what he did nor how long (hours) it took him to do the job. All he gave me was a list of guide lines for his charges. (sloppiness #2). The total cost to me was $340. The antenna: $100, labor $200, coax $20 and the $20 fee for his mistake. He told me he charges $100/hr for his labor. But here's my point. He was here only for 1 hour. Which of course means he over charged me $100. This is precisely why he didn't want to write up a proper work receipt because as anyone knows the labor rate and hours worked would have to have been noted to add up the total bill. He says one thing and does another to his advantage. All this is dishonest business practice mired in sloppiness

Needed wires that had come loose re-attached to 2-story house and antenna checked. John from Smart Tek Success responded quickly to my HomeAdvisor query, gave me a quote over the phone, and made arrangements to come out 3 days later. He gave me an assessment of the condition of the antenna and all the wiring, and secured the loose wiring to the side of the house. I paid the agreed-to price, which was based on the travel distance and labor; no additional parts were needed. I probably could have gotten a handyman to do the same for a little less money, but I wanted someone with known expertise to check everything out. John is a nice, friendly man, and I would recommend him for similar work.
