Sod Sales Direct

I first used Sod Sales Direct for some maintenance and repair on our sprinkler system. Phil Polak was so responsive and competitively priced, I asked him to bid on the larger landscaping job. His price was also very competitive for that job, and he was again very responsive, so I awarded his company the bid. His crew performed the entire job while my family was on vacation, which was a bit scary, as I wasn't here to monitor the work. However, I trusted that the job would be performed well, and it was. When we returned, the job was completed just as we wanted, any mess they had made was cleaned up, and our yard looks great! Phil followed up to answer our questions and provide us a watering and fertilizer schedule. I am very satisfied with the work and would heartily recommend Sod Sales Direct and would use them again myself.

Great experience. Phil was very quick to reply and get us a quote. He came out a couple of times to make sure the plants were correct and that the job was going well. His crew was outstanding. They made sure everything was done correctly and if they broke something (sprinkler system pipes) it was repaired quickly. Outstanding job and would not hesitate to recommending them.

He returned an estimate that was many thousands of dollars more than I told him I could budget. It was an odd interaction, we decided not to use him. He was generally unprofessional.

Phil met with us to discuss our plans - he made great suggestions but was open to our ideas as well. The work crew was courteous, hard-working, personable. The final sod job was delayed a few days while Phil waited on delivery of the sod he felt we needed - the wait was worth it because the sod looks great. We are already looking ahead to fall projects that we will definitely call them about.

Overall our project went great. Sod Sales Direct completely transformed our yard and at a fair price. The only issue we had is the price ended up being about 15% more than the original estimate. Partly this was because Phil didn't measure the side of our yard and partly because we moved things around a little bit. The mulch estimate was way off but Phil came back out and added more. Overall a good experience and everything turned out beautifully.

Phil was very professional, he spent a good while with me going over all the things I wanted done with the property. I found the estimate to be very reasonable and received tons of great references. Unfortunately I had some last minute budget constraints that nixed the project.

Processe went very well. Prompt in all appointments, work was well done, neat an timely. Easily accomodated adjustments as the job progressed.

We decided to go with another company that gave us a quote. They were okay. They were just going to sod the backyard without any attention to the design. We found a design company that would just use half the sod with attention to design. The guy was nice, but he didn't have any design sense, though he didn't claim to have any, either.

They seemed to be knowledgeable. I didn't go with them because they were very busy.

I wanted my old, small concrete patio extended and new sod put down in my backyard, which had gotten overrun with weeds to the point that starting over was the best option. I went with Phil because of the great reviews on Angie's List and because, with the Angie's List discount, the price was quite comparable to other quotes I'd received. Also, Phi's company could do both jobs, which was more convenient than getting one company to do the patio and another to do the resodding. However, considering Phil's company is an Angie's List award winner, I was a bit disappointed with my experience. First, communication was not that great. Phil would often say a particular part of the job would be done on a certain day, and yet that day would come and go and I would hear nothing from him. After calling, he would say that some aspect was a bit delayed, and his guys would be by on a different day. I also wanted some special water storing pellets put into the dirt before the sod was installed so that there would be better water retention during dry spells. There was some difficulty with this since the shipmen was a bit late. But, once it came, I let Phil know how to install it, but it wasn't installed the way it should have been (a few inches down into the dirt instead of right on top). The result was half the pellets ended up just coming out above the sod and making a bit of a mess. Also, Phil made it seem as if he would be there when the sod was installed, and he wasn't. Some person I'd never seen before was there when I came home from work that day. A portion of the backyard that didn't get alot of sun was supposed to just be covered with pine straw instead of sod. However, the workers had put sod there. The person in charge called Phil, who said they had ordered too much sod, so they just put it down. Regardless that we had agreed NOT to put sod in that spot because it doesn't get enough sun for the Bermuda to survive well. (This was at Phil's recommendation!) At the end of the job, I had to point out that the workers hadn't cleaned well enough. After the concrete was poured, there were a lot of splashes that were not wiped away. So, I had a lot of concrete splashes that had dried on my siding. There was also a piece of siding that came out when the old concrete patio was removed. When it happened, the workers just set it aside and then threw it away without ever mentioning that it had come apart from the house. When I realized this a few days later, Phil just said that it was not installed well and so came apart when they ripped out the old concrete. He said he would give me a bit of money back since I had to have it replaced. But, he was just going to leave without ever acknowledging that there was siding now missing and didn't have any explanation for why his guys (or him) never pointed out that this had happened in the first place. Also, after the sod was put down, I had to get the guys to clean up better than they had. There was still dirt all over parts of the patio that needed to be rinsed off. And they were going to leave the patio and side of the house looking the way it did if I hadn't said anything. In addition, I noticed several days later that there had been too little pine straw put down around the edges of the yard and around a tree. It was barely covering the dirt in some places. I ended up having to purchase extra pine straw to put down myself. So, while the final product looked nice, I expected better communication and clean up. And, in another bit of unprofessionalism, I started receiving non-business related (e.g., political) mass emails from Phil. I had to request to be taken off of the email list.

Sod Sales Direct came in to replace a drainage system that had been improperly installed by a poor contractor 6 weeks earlier. Sod Sales Direct was prompt and professional completing the job on time and within budget of the original estimate. The work was performed in less than a day - the day before Thanksgiving. The previous contractor took more than two days to improperly install the drainage system. Since the installation, there has been heavy rain and I have not seen any standing water in my yard. I would highly recommend this company for any water displacement or hardscape needs.

I was very pleased with the work of Sod Sales Direct. What I most appreciated about the experience is Phil's experience & professionalism. Initially when I called Phil out, my intention was just to add some dirt, sod & bushes to repair the damage of a drainage problem that I had. Wisely Phil recommended ideas on how to FIX the source of the problem so that it would not happen again. He ended up installing a drain & pipe system. He also assessed another hidden problem that I had. Additionally, Phil responded very quickly to my request for an estimate - (he came out the next day.) Once I gave the ok, he began work within 2 days. He welcomed additional items that I wanted him to correct while his folks were out there - including a last minute change. His folks were very professional & cleaned up thoroughly after the work was complete.

I called Phil Polak on a friday evening about 5pm and asked to schedule an appointment for an estimate. He was at my door 2 hours later! We walked through the backyard and talked about grading, leveling and laying sod. He said he would email me an estimate the next day and I received it that evening. We negotiated back and forth regarding the price. After we came to an agreement on price, he and his crew were here two days later to begin work. The first day, they buried the drain pipes and built the retaining wall. The next day they graded the backyard and laid the sod. They watered it and rolled it. They sprinkled the pine straw in the designated areas. The yard transformed into a gorgeous manicured yard! I am so pleased with the work and theoutcome.

It went fantastic. They quickly installed, buried and hooked up the lines in only few hours. I could barely tell where they had to dig up the yard for the new lines. It works great and my new garden is off to a great start! Thanks again Phil!

Phil and his crew showed up exactly when they said they would and did what they said they'd do. When I wanted to make some additional changes as we went he worked with me to make me happy with the end results. I couldn't be happier! Will absolutely hire him the next time I need work!

Phil showed up as promised on time the first day and began work. They returned the next day and finished up, working well past dark. They cleaned up completely and pressure washed our driveway and cul de sac. First rate work!

Great. We had some problems with the sod (not Phil's fault) but he replaced it all and redid the whole yard.

The team of installers worked quickly. The sod looked good. There were a couple of minor spot I thought they could have woven the sod closer together. Mainly where the sod met my other bermunda. They were contracted to modify the irrigation system too. They added three rotating sprinkler heads. The water pressure from the county is not great. The company did not resolve some zone irrigation issues before they left. Overall they were good.

Phil is great and a genuine pleasure to work with. He and his men were on time and stayed consistently on the job until it was complete. Phil is flexible and easy to reach. He had many good suggestions, and did a number of additional things to make everything right. Excellent attention to detail, and thorough cleanup. I'm 100% satisfied. And the yard looks fantastic! Hire Phil if you want your yard done right.
