I called Spray Foam Services after hearing about a new way to save energy and money on heating and cooling costs. The owner of the company, Mr. John Hartsfield , was punctual in keeping the appointment we had scheduled. He went into the attic and made an assessment of my current insulation and based upon that gave me two quotes based on different kinds of insulation, open and closed cell foam. He also encouraged me to remove all the old insulation and gave me a price on that as well. I did my due diligence and talked to several people about spray foam including the Georgia Power Company. The general consensus was this is a great product and will pay back the initial investment in just a few years. I did not specifically talk to anyone that had done business with this provider. After about six months of thinking about this, I called Mr. Hartsfield to schedule the installation which was June of 2012. The workers showed up as promised and began to take out the old installation. I think this was under estimated because they ended up spending a full two days to do this. I honestly felt sorry for the workers working in a hot attic with tyvic suits with no ventilation. This had to be brutal. Anyway, on what I believe was the third day, a different crew showed up to spray the attic. This was somewhat quick and they were done in less than a half day. I looked up in the attic and to me, it looked okay. I did not have the means or knowledge to know if this was an acceptable job or not which in time proved to be terrible. My energy costs skyrocketed and even worse, the usually adequate air conditioning system was working full time during the day and the interior temperature would rise well beyond the comfort level. It would be well into the night before the temperature would come back down. Mr. Hartsfield had told me me during the initial visit the attic would never be over 5-6 degrees above the comfort level in the interior of the house. After the installation, my attic temperature would consistently be in the 150-160 degree range and with no insulation above the ceiling wow did it get hot. During the winter, my normal energy costs doubled. Knowing something was terribly wrong, I went into the attic to make a full investigation. I took a contractor with me and what me found was the two inches of closed cell was between 1/2" and 7/8,. With this information, I sent an email to Mr. Hartsfield to please come take a look. This email was ignored as were the next dozen or so that were sent to all the email addresses I had for him. I finally sent a message on Facebook that he answered some 9 months later. In all he never called me back, he never answered an email until the Facebook message back in March of 2013. All said and done, in late July of 2013, he sent two workers up to redo the job. These guys were great. They immediately identified the problem that there were many gaps and open areas that hadn't been sprayed. They also, brought the under applied area up to what was initially traded for. In retrospect, I made a mistake too. He had told me we could isolate the area over the garage from the rest of the house or make it a part of the whole house. He encouraged me to isolate the garage area however I opted to include it. This was a big mistake on my part. When I was able to finally talk to him a couple of days before the guys showed up to make this right, he demanded a fee of $1,500.00 to do the barrier to the garage and also said it was a minimum charge. I was at wits end to get something done and agreed less a deduction of $300 to repair the ceiling where the original crew stepped through the attic. So anyway, some 14 months after they first started the job, it's much better and my energy cost are down to what I expected. I believe if he had answered the phone or email, I could have saved significant money spent in power and fuel cost. I encouraged the workers to go back and tell him about the terrible job that had been done initially and maybe he would see his mistakes and reduce the $1,500.00 amount to something reasonable. All he has done is to call and demand full payment. Finally we had a heart to heart talk and I told him his lack of communication (up until now) was very unprofessional and had cost me a lot of money and aggravation. I would not do business with him again as I have found there are other companies doing this work that do have a sense of what is right and wrong.
Description of Work: Applied spray foam insulation in the attic of my house. They also removed the old insulation.
