I was surprised to see this posted, since it has been a year since I was last hired by this client. I do recall that they seemed like a nice couple, and they gave no indication that they were unhappy with the work I did for them. In fact, they hired me on two separate occasions. The second time was several weeks after the first, for a different computer problem. In both cases they insisted that I come to their home, although I commonly do these types of repairs remotely (as I recall, the second time was an issue with accessing his email, which we resolved during that visit). After seeing the poor letter grades on this review (almost all of my other Angie's List reviews are straight "A"s), I tried to contact the customer to discuss what I could do to resolve the problem, but I never heard back from them. My primary concern with any of my clients is that they are happy with my work, but it has been a year since I last saw this couple, and they never voiced any dissatisfaction the first or second time they hired me, or in the 12 months following. I last saw them in March 2014 and this review was posted March 2015. Regardless, I wish them well.

Description of Work: Had a computer virus that rendered the system useless. Scott analyzed the system, determined the correction actions needed and gave me a breakdown of the cost. I could say yes or no at that point. I gave the go-ahead. Scott saved my data files and reformatted the hard drives. Then he installed a new copy of Windows and restored my data. The computer was returned to me in good working condition. Of course I had to reinstall the programs I use on a daily basis. Scott is very professional and a pleasure to do business with.

Thanks! I had to look twice at this review because it was not familiar to me, then I noticed that even though it was just now posted, it was actually from more than 2 years ago. Currently, physical location is not usually an issue any more, because I do a lot of work through remote access (I have a list of about 300 clients whose computers I repair remotely, so neither of us has to travel or bring the computer anywhere). Thanks again for the positive review!

Scott went to work untangling wires which were very knotted up and visually unattractive. He moved the printer, modem etc to a more "user friendly" location. All of his suggestions were very practical and efficient for the space. He noticed that I did not have any malware or back up on my computer so suggested something that he could install and did not charge me extra time to do it. I only paid what it cost for the program. He also explained (in detail) my options, and there were free options available to me. I chose something that involved a cost because it had additional features that appealed to me. I must make the point that at no time was there any pressure to" hard sell" me by Scott. He just gave me the information and let me make the decision when it came to my choice on the malware product. My business contact with Scott was a pleasant one, and I will surely be using him and only him for my future computer service needs.
Description of Work: I called Computer Tutor for help with setting up my office space. I purchased a new desk and needed help re configuring all the computer set up in that room including modem etc. Scott was able to come out the next day, which was great because the desk was delivered the day prior.

Our Canon printer/scanner/copier had a paper jam that we couldn't fix, so I called The Computer Tutor and made an appointment to drop it off on Thursday afternoon at 4:30. At approximately 6 pm Scott called me to say that he had fixed the problem and I could come and pick it up that evening or the next day. I picked it up the next morning and it works great. I also signed up for Scott's weekly email newsletter with computer tips and information and I find it very informative.

I was very happy with our experience and glad to find Scott so we can use him in the future if we have any computer problems. Would highly recommend.
Description of Work: Our laptop quit working and I called The Computer Tutor based on reviews on Angies List. Scott was extremely friendly and looked at our computer right away over the weekend. He backed up everything on our computer first and charged $50 for that. He said he was pretty sure he could fix the problem and wouldn't charge us if he wasn't able to fix it. He ended up fixing it for $75 so the whole fee was $125. He was very professional and I would definitely use him again. Our laptop works great now.

Description of Work: My computer was frozen and I had lost the password. When moving the computer from one residence to another, it would not recognize my network software or password. Scott found this information quickly for me and helped me determine that to update my virus protection. It ran very slowly before Scott looked at it, but he went out of his way to pick it up and work on it. There was no long period of time to wait, the next day he called to tell me he had the solution. Since then, I read his information on his site and it is helpful with new programs. Thanks for your assistance, timeliness, and giving it that extra touch in customer service.

When I got my new laptop back, I knew that things didn't work right from the start. I started making a list of things that were malfunctioning, including but not limited to the volume, the webcam, spell check and so on. He came back to fix some things that he wiped out, but charged me to fix his own mistake. Furthermore, he has a podcast that I've listened to and he's made several racial remarks about "Russian Hackers" saying that most hackers are Russian, or East Indian. He's also made snide religious remarks that I've found extremely unprofessional at best, and very offensive.
Description of Work: I bought a brand new laptop and I hired him to help me install everything necessary, but he ended up cleaning it out. He wiped everything out completely except for my pictures.

I was quite surprised to find the review from this member, since he didn’t mention any dissatisfaction at all when I was at his home. As is shown by my other reviews here, and the video testimonials on my website, I have a very good reputation with my clients. Unfortunately, the member’s account of what actually took place is not accurate. Here is what happened. The member called me to request that I come to his home and see why his computer was not working properly. My first visit to his home was on September 10, 2012. His laptop was slowed to a crawl, and was full of viruses and other “malware”. This was due to a couple of factors: 1. The antivirus program on the computer was the trial version that had come with the computer, and it had expired. There was not antispyware software installed at all. This left the computer unprotected. 2. The member’s primary use for the laptop is to visit particular websites (porn). I mention this not as any “moral” judgment; what a person does with his computer is his own business. However, any computer tech will tell you that porn websites are well-known for infecting computers with viruses and spyware. Whenever I am first diagnosing a computer for a client, my first question is always this: “Is there any data on this computer that is important, but not backed up?” I feel that the first step in any repair should be to preserve the data that is still there, so that we don’t take any chances on losing it. The member said that he had not backed anything up, and that the only data on the computer that was of any importance to him were the pictures. The virus infections on the laptop were so severe that the most cost-effective remedy was to just format the drive and reinstall Windows. I explained this to the member, particularly the fact that this process would definitely wipe out all of the data on the machine, so we needed to make sure that anything that needed to be saved was done first. He reconfirmed that the only data he needed was the folder of pictures. I did the stated repair and ensured that the computer was back in good working order. I also restored all of the pictures back. I brought the laptop back to the member 2 days later (September 12, 2012). I showed him that the pictures were back in place, and we also went over the other functions of the computer, including connecting to the internet, antivirus and antispyware software, and creating an automated backup process. He was satisfied that all was back in order. The next time I heard from this member was 30 days later (even though in his review he says, “I knew that things didn’t work right from the start”). His phone call was to say that some things on the computer weren’t working correctly. I went back to his home on October 11. When I looked at the laptop this time, I unfortunately found that the member had already tried to “fix” things himself, but in the process had made things worse. The clue was that there was a shortcut icon to “Control Panel” placed on the desktop, which was not there previously. Also, the touchpad buttons had been changed to work opposite of how they were supposed to (the left button did what the right button was supposed to do, and vice versa). His list of “problem” items was as follows: 1. “The volume control doesn’t work” I opened a YouTube video to begin some music playing and then used the volume control to raise and lower the volume. It was working properly. His actual complaint was that the loudest setting still was not loud enough. I explained that this is only a laptop computer, so the sound can only be so loud because the speakers are small. 2. “The webcam doesn’t work” I went to the website “testmycam.com” which offers to check any webcam for proper operation. The image showed up on the screen and the member saw himself on the webcam to show that it was working properly. 3. “Google won’t let me create an email account” Together, the member and I went to gmail.com and created a new account successfully. I sent a test email to my own account (on my phone) and also received a reply back, to show that it was working properly. 4. “Spell check doesn’t work” In the new Gmail account, I composed a new email and deliberately misspelled a word. That word had the red squiggly lines under it to designate it as an incorrect spelling, which I showed to the member as evidence that the spell check feature was working as it should. I also fixed the reconfigured touchpad buttons so that they were functioning as intended. Since we had gone over each of the items on the list he had created and all was working properly, he seemed to be satisfied. As I said, he never mentioned any complaint while I was there. It was only after I left that he decided all of these problems were ones that I created when I had the computer a month earlier, and should therefore come to his house and fix them at no charge. His accusations that I made “several racial remarks” and “snide religious remarks” have no basis in fact, and don’t deserve or require a response. Anyone that knows me knows better than that. It’s always sort of an awkward situation to analyze a computer that has problems, when the problems are there as a direct result of the user. Even with good security software in place, there is still the likelihood that this member’s computer will get infected again because of the type of websites he frequently visits. I don’t know of any computer repair service that will repeatedly fix these things for free, especially when in-home visits are included. I have a very good reputation among my clients, and am happy to answer any questions regarding this situation.

My laptop computer stopped working. After researching a bit on the internet, I was pretty sure it was a motherboard and/or power supply issue and that getting a replacement was likely the best solution. However, I did contact Scott to get his opinion before spending money on a new computer. He contacted me within hours of my email submission to him and I dropped off the machine, had it diagnosed, and had a response from him all on a Sunday. While my assumption was correct and he was not able to cost effectively repair it, his service was prompt and professional. He provided an honest assessment and did not charge since he was not able to fix the problem. I recommend his services for computer related issues.

He performs all types of computer services. He comes to your home or can do it remotely. I would highly recommend him for people who aren't computer literate. He is super patient and very honest.
Description of Work: He helped me add software to my old computer, and fixed some glitches. I upgraded to a new computer with Windows 7 and he transferred all my old data to the new computer and got everything up and running. I have a second computer with Verizon and he transferred all of that for me, and got it upgraded as well.
