I First I scheduled this two weeks ago with this company because of the ratings on Angie's List. When I called I talked to a very professional lady who took my information and scheduled the appointment. While I was talking to the scheduling person I told her that the attic stairs were bought from Lowe's but were purchased based on the size and weight capacity that it could take. I explained that the stairs had to accommodate the 10' 7" ceiling and the instructions stated that it needed a larger hole (specifically 25" opening) in the ceiling. I told her that the technician might need to bring wood and I gave her the dimensions that would be needed. She explained that I didn't need to worry about it but if there was any wood or supplies needed the technician would let my wife know what to get if needed-since she was going to be at home for the appointment. The conversation ended and the appointment was scheduled. On the day of the appointed hour my wife said a technician showed up on time and began to start to look at the job he was hired to do. After looking around he told my wife that we needed an engineer since it was going to need to get the hole widened and he did not know how to do the engineering; with that advice my wife said, ok, and he left. So now, I am stuck with attic stairs on the ground and need to find somebody to get them installed. Can Anyone help me-apparently Mr. Handyman cannot install attic stairs.

I’ve tried calling the number we have on file, but it wasn’t answered nor could I leave voice mail. I have sent you the text below via email given this won't post for a few days. I understand, after a 2 week wait, that we were unable to install your attic pull down steps yesterday. I’m sure that’s frustrating. I want to ensure you understand why we waived off this work, and offer a solution. Attic steps generally fit between the ceiling trusses, and are typically 22” wide to fit in that 22.5” space. Many builders install a 22”x22” push up hatch as their standard (saving a buck by not installing pull down steps), and we cut that hole larger (22”x54”) when pull down steps are to be installed. In these cases we’re extending the length of the hole but cutting out more drywall (simple enough), blocking is installed at each end and the steps are then installed. When you discussed enlarging the opening, our CSR believed this is what you were referring to and this is something we frequently do. She didn’t understand you wanted to widen the space, thus needing to cut through a truss. Cutting a section from a truss compromises the structural integrity of that truss. This can lead to undesired consequences, including the roof beginning to sag above this truss. I’ve seen homeowners (or unscrupulous service providers who should know better) make the cut and install the steps, and then later have this kick out on an inspection report when trying to sell the home. We wasted a trip to your home, which disappoints us also, but I’d much prefer our Technician to walk away then violate the building code and leave you with a significant future problem. I understand your disappointment in waiting for this scheduled appointment and then not getting the work completed, but imagine your disappointment when your roofline developed a sag over the next year or two because the truss below had been compromised. So, if you can order steps to fit the space between your trusses, we’d be happy to work with you to get them installed. You apparently warned us on the need to cut the truss, but we failed to fully understand your warning and we put an appointment on the schedule that we had to waive off (two weeks later). For that, we may deserve this review – but I’d rather get this review for walking away than damaging your home. If you were to buy the appropriately sized pull down stairs for your ceiling height and truss width, we’ll work something out with you on the pricing to offset our failure to fully comprehend your situation over the phone. We really are that ‘A’ rated company you’ve seen on Angie’s List, and we want to leave you satisfied and earn your repeat business - but we will not do unwise things to your home in an effort to do this.

I originally called to have about 250 linear feet of damaged pine siding replaced. Based on a detailed description of the size of the structure and the amount of siding to be replaced, I was told that work could begin on the afternoon of the 11th, with the proviso that it may have to continue over to the morning of the 13th. We arranged that I would go to the lumber yard and pay for the siding as well as for three trim pieces, which the carpenter would pick up on his way to the job. On the 11th, the carpenter picked up 25 pieces of siding (20 minutes, approximately). He did not pick up the three trim pieces, even though he signed the receipt for them. (The lumber yard credited my account without question.) He then came to look at the job, at which time he called his office and spend 15 minutes discussing with them the fact that he would need a second person on the job, and 12 hours to complete it. Informed of this new proposal (at least triple the original), I asked him (since he was already on site) to perform a simple repair on a wooden step, which he did. The total bill was $172. This was to pick up the lumber from a location lying between the Mr. Handyman office and the work site, drive to the work site (another 20 minutes), talk on the phone with his office, and repair the step. He claimed 1.25 hours, even though the travel, picking up the lumber, and repairing the step, had required under 1.00 hours. If I had no carpentry experience, it is possible that I would not have recognized his calculation of the number of people and number of hours required as outrageous. As it is, having framed up house additions and installed siding myself, I knew that it was grossly excessive. The owner of the franchise called me a while later, but all he wanted was to explain why the entire transaction was totally correct. I'm sure he realizes that I am unlikely to use his company again. He may not be aware that I have lived on this street for 43 years and in this house for 40, and know many of those who live here and are restoring property in this area.
Description of Work: Picked up lumber, examined job originally requested, talked on phone to his office, repaired a wooden step.

Thank you for your feedback. Sometimes a service provider and the consumer that contacts them are simply a poor match. I think we have such a case here. Any information we shared over the phone about potential scope/cost was based on your description of the situation. We set an appointment, called you when headed your way, met you at the supply center, loaded and happily hauled your materials (which we explained would be charged, just as having the supply center delivering the materials would have been charged). Upon arriving at your home we found this was not the simple repair described on the phone. We found the siding repair was not all located in the same area, but was a patchwork across two buildings and most had to be done from a ladder. This takes longer, which impacts cost. When we present the price to complete a project it’s not always inside the price range a customer had hoped. You were under no obligation to accept that price and utilize our services, and you chose not to. I think that was best for both of us. Based on our conversation on the phone, your comments about the skills of my staff, that this project could be done by local teenagers, the threat of a bad review, and your comments about telling all the neighbors what kind of company we are leads me to believe that it was the best situation for both of us to simply agree to disagree and move on.

They were good. I had hired this guy that a friend of mine recommended. All I wanted was to change out some faucets in my bathroom. My mom had moved with me for a while and she have used some cleaner on some of the ones in her bathroom and they were discolored and would not change. I was trying to sell my home so I decided to change out the faucets. The guy that I hired to do it first of all, it took him forever to change a few faucets out. It was like six faucets all together. It took him days to get it done. Then, I thought everything was fine and I happen to walk into the bath when my son came over to show him the new faucets. Luckily, I decided to do that because he did not put the faucets together correctly and they were leaking. I had water damage. So, I called in Mr. Handyman because I had seen their ad on Kingsley and they were very professional. They came in. They fixed everything for me. They took care of the water damage. It was done quickly and professionally. They were awesome. I have recommended them to a friend. I would definitely use them again in the future.

It took five hours and I was never told there is nearly a 100% mark-up on the shelving, or I would have waited and purchased it myself. I called right after the service provider left to complain and explain that I had no knowledge of this mark-up. My understanding when booking the appointent was that they would go and get the materials for me, but then they are on the clock, so you are paying for their time. I was happy to do that and ensure the right product was purchased. NEVER was I told they charge you to purchase and mark up the product...making it well over a 100% mark up. I was told at the time of the call that they would call me as soon as the handyman returned and they had the receipt (he REFUSED to show it to me). It's been over 48 hours and still no response. However, I received hank you and business cards for referrals in the mail today. As if. Though I may call the local news stations about this rip off. I anticipated spending around $400, certainly not over $800. It was a joke and it took over two hours to HANG items...very small, simple items. I would never use this service again.

Mrs. [Member Name Removed] – Thank you for your feedback. We contact every customer the day after their job to ensure all was done to their satisfaction, and clearly that wasn’t the case here. Your service technician that day is currently our highest rated technician based on our follow-up survey. On this day, however, he failed to satisfy. Your concerns were further compounded by an extended game of phone tag. We make no excuses, however, we simply address the given concern. I’m glad the we finally connected and that you allowed us the opportunity to address your concerns. I hope you are satisfied that we’ve taken appropriate steps, and I hope we get another chance to enter your home some day and leave you thrilled. Regards, The Mr. Handyman team.

Great! Repairman was curteous and diligent to fix the problem. He also found a way to reduce costs on an expensive circuit board rather than replacing the entire thing (which we were previously told would likely happen). Would definitely recommend them and will use them again!

I had a to-do list of about 10 minor repairs. When I called for an appointment, the office staff was efficeint, pleasant and eager to accomodate. The price of about $100 per hour seemed a bit high at first, but when they explained that each tradesman was an insured, bonded and licensed contractor with at least 15 years of experience, and had all the necessary tools in his truck, the cost made more sense. My appointment was a 4-hour window, Their handyman actually arrived about 5 minutes early. He went through my entire list, asking all the right questions, and came up with an estimate of 4.5 hours. When I accepted his proposal and signed, he got right to work, and checked with me on completion of each item to be sure I was satisfied. He offered to clean up each work area as he finished, but I elected to do the broom work myself. He managed to get about half the items finished before he had to leave after 4.5 hours work. Overall, I was very happy with the quality of the work done. I did have two complaints: First, I had stapled a $44 discount coupon from Angie's list to my to-do list and handed it to the repair man as soon as he walked in the door. After he left, I realized he had not given credit for the coupon on the invoice. I called the office the next day, explained the problem and asked that they mail me a check for $44. It was clear that they were not happy with the idea of mailing me a check - they would rather offer a credit for the next job (like I was going to fall for that again.) When I insisted on a check, they said they would inquire about that and call me back the next business day. After 3 days I hadn't heard from them, so I called back and was told "the check is in the mail." The check arrived a week later... My second problem was with their policy of charging an extra fee for every visit. The first hour of labor costs a an extra $50, which I assume is to cover the cost of a service call. If I had asked the repair man to come back and finish up his work on the next business day I would have had to pay the extra $50 again, even though he was continuing a job he had not been able to finish the day before. I feel that this duplicate service charge is unethical. I have worked 30 years in the service industry, and never double-charged my customrs this way. My advice is: expect skilled labor and high quality work, but go in with your eyes open about charges and discounts.

Considering the damage situation, the result was about as good as could be expected. There was some weather delay because of dampness, and that unfortunately required a return the next day to finish. Therein lies my displeasure with the charging practices of Mr. Handyman. They charge $148 for the first hour and $24 per quarter hour after that. However if the job runs over, like mine did, they charge another $148 for the first hour, even though it is only a continuation of the work that was begun but not finished the day before. The job was estimated at about 4 hours, beginning at 11:15 am on the first day but it stopped at 3:15 that afternoon. The next day there were two more hours to finish the job. I would use this provider in the future if I could get a firm price for the job up front, and not be unsure of the final price until the whole job was finished.

Paul came out again and was professional and courteous. He keeps every work area so tidy that you'd barely know he was at the house. Paul worked around all the other craziness going on at our home including the fact that I was glued to my phone on infinite hold with a situation that had to be handled immediately. The only downside I would say is if you need materials for the job, have them come out and tell you what to have on hand in advance or you will pay for the time while they go get what they need. This could really save you a few bucks. Otherwise, I HIGHLY recommend this company and Paul!!!

I hired Mr. Handyman with the intention of having them come out and fix my front fascia board after the electrician moved a power line. The electrician had to reschedule so the fascia work had to be delayed. The office staff at Mr. Handyman kept me in the loop all the time and by the time I had to call Brandi to tell her I needed to delay the fascia but had other work for the man she was sending if that was okay, it seemed we were old friends. She called me whenever she had an opportunity open to get the work done sooner. The man showed up and an instead of doing the fascia board I got him started on three pieces of IKEA furniture I had yet to start. It wasn't what he'd planned at all and I know how much people hate putting those things together but Paul did a marvelous and professional job under cramped circumstances. He worked the whole day helping me get ahead on other projects. His flexibility and work were exceptional.

The gentleman who was dispatched to my house was very professional from the outset. After previewing the damage, he immediately set out to make the necessary repairs. He replaced wood trim around a window, and after removing some of the rotted wood it uncovered more extensive damage than was realized initially. He also repaired a rotted section of facia under the roof flashing, re-sealed all ends as necessary, primed and painted all repaired areas and finished in reasonable time.he was very professional from start to finish and a very congenial individual. I would gladly recommend this company and plan to use them, as necessary, on future jobs.

It was amazing! On short notice, Mr. Handyman (AKA Paul) managed to come in and beautifully repair the two items that I'd requested (gutters and caulking)...AND when I found a patch of water damage by a window, fixed it as well. Very reasonably priced for EXTREMELY competent and knowledgeable service. Paul went above and beyond to provide me with the best service possible. Best of all? They work during business hours so I can have him come in while my husband is at work and claim that I did it :)

From our experience they were looking to take us for a ride....Will never contact them again as it was an eye opening experience to see after getting multiple offers from other repair companies in the same day that completely conflicted the estimate we were given.
Description of Work: Requested an estimate from company for water damage we have had in the house. Told us he would be here between 12 and 2 and showed up just after two. After looking at the wall was ready to knock down half of our house. After getting multiple estimates from rival companies it was obvious he was looking to take us for a ride. IT IS water damage and is contained to a baseboard under a window. He was ready to cut a hole out of our house and knock down an entire exterior wall and possibly a window. When my wife came out as I was talking with the rep he seemed very condescending towards her. When we told him we were not ready to let him just cut a hole in our house he said that we still owed for his "free estimate". We told him that was never relayed to us and that we were not going to pay it based on their own email that said "we are not obligated to any service". Called the office and the just kept repeating that in "their system" all they had in there was that we were requesting them to caulk the window.......why would you caulk the window if the leak is at the base of the wall.....Then she started quoting "their policy" which conflicted with the email they had sent us the previous day. Completely unprofessional from beginning to end.

[member name removed]– Thank you for your feedback. While we hope to win every job and leave every customer pleased, there are always multiple views on the best way to attack a problem. Our goal is always a complete and permanent solution. It seems there’s always somebody willing to offer a lowball price for a cosmetic solution, and that often leads to wide pricing disparity. I have no idea who you hired, nor what exactly they ended up doing for you. I hope you are pleased with the work and I hope that it lasts. If they didn’t solve for the original source of the water intrusion, it may not. If you conclude their work was simply a Band-Aid and now the damage is back, we’d be happy to be of service. We will attack the source of the water intrusion first, and this will cost more than the Band-Aid that didn’t last.

This company is on the ball, from the customer service department to the very polite and knowledgable repairman!
Description of Work: This company responded to my request for immediate service and worked with me get a firm time. I needed a minor repair on my front door and the repairman had the part on his truck. He also replaced a shutoff valve on one of my commodes, making a quick trip to Lowes to get the part, all in an hour and a half!
