Our initial impression of Ed Thorpe was a good one. He gives a friendly, easy-to-get-a-long with type of first impression. I was excited to give him the job. I liked him! Once he got started, he gave a few updates expressing concern with the timeline. He knew we were being moved by a company and had little control over our move date. When he became very concerned about the date we were being moved, we went through a major hassle to have our move date pushed by a few days. We personally arrived in Florida the morning before the moving company. We were excited to see the house but when we got to it, Ed had just put another coat of stain down. So, the floors were wet; we couldn't walk on them and could only see the very entrance. The room that had floors installed was upstairs so we couldn't see it at all as the first floor of the house is all wood. But, being trusting people and Ed being a likable guy, he asked for the other 50% we owed him (upon completion) and we gave it to him --- even though we hadn't seen the majority of his work, he hadn't installed the carpet runner yet (because he ran out of time), and he hadn't done the touch up painting on the baseboards. The next morning we were able to walk on the floors just before the moving company arrived. .... The broken steps hadn't been repaired (a danger to everyone) and the WRONG floors had been installed in the upstairs bedroom (we had ordered 6" boards and 3" boards were installed), and the stain DID NOT MATCH the rest of the floors. And.....WE HAD ALREADY PAID HIM (big sigh, learn from us, please). So we called Ed - he came by and was sorry. He eventually admitted his mistake but blamed it on the place he got the wood from for giving him the wrong size (you'd think he'd notice?). He promised he'd "make it right". He said the wood stained differently because it was a different age or type or something (again, you'd think, this being his professional career, that he would know how to correct that or would have warned us ahead of time). As for the rest of the floors that got refinished, it was an okay job. You can see the marks from the sander under the stain, and there are a few spots that somehow have no stain at all (which I don't understand, like drip-sized spots). We were so distracted by the totally wrong floor upstairs that we never even complained about these "smaller" problems. Anyway, weeks go by and, even though I was constantly prodding Ed, we never got any samples of the right boards for the upstairs room, a painter never did touch-up paint on the baseboards, the steps didn't get fixed, and the carpet runner was still not installed. Ed is always friendly, and ALWAYS has an excuse. But, we'd already paid him and were clearly not a priority anymore! About 4 weeks later a guy did come to install the carpet runner. Around the 6 week later point, and after several "I'm dropping off samples tomorrow", "I'll have them next Wednesday" etc etc...we tell Ed we want him to take the floor up in the bedroom and give us a refund for it. But, he didn't have the money to refund it and wanted to do a payment plan to refund us (we were pretty sure we couldn't count on that). When he offered a deal to redo the one bedroom and put floors down in two others that needed it (for a bit more money of course), against our better judgement we decided to give him another chance. Honestly, he really did seem sorry (he had loads of excuses too; but I'm a forgiving person and started to think...you know, everyone has bad luck, hard times, etc...maybe he's being truthful?) You've got to remember, he's a likable guy! Anyway, we were out of town for 10 days and he said it would ALL be done by the time we were back in town (the new floors and the painting). When we came back in town he hadn't done a SINGLE thing at our house. Ed of course had a lot of excuses why nothing was done -- but after a while, we really got tired of the excuses. So, we gave him an ultimatum date for total completion or total refund. He agreed to the ultimatum and even said he'd add quarter round to our base boards for free to "make it right". It was a nice gesture, but also done in a sub-par manner with a lot of little mistakes and whatnot. He did "finish" by the date, I guess, but the workmanship is so disappointing. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is that the new floors he installed and stained from start to finish are "rough". I cannot push a mop over them without getting it snagged; it's uncomfortable to walk barefooted on. We didn't really realize their roughness until I went to mop up the dust (and after we paid him again). I sent Ed an email expressing our disappointment and never heard back from him. It's just as well, I suppose. But we've certainly learned our lesson, several times. I hate writing bad reviews and I feel guilty writing this (even though I feel justified at the same time). Ed started the work at our house mid-Oct 2014 and didn't finish until mid-Jan 2015 (a job that was supposed to be done in 2 weeks). If he'd done a professional and quality job I most likely wouldn't have written this.... we had to chase him for every little thing and still got shoddy work in the end. I wished several times that someone had written this before we'd hired him; so here you go.
Description of Work: We hired Ed Thorpe to refinish a large portion of hardwood flooring and install flooring in one bedroom (initially). He was also supposed to repair a few broken hardwood floor steps, then install a carpet runner on them, as well as touch-up all baseboard paint that got stain on it. He was hired to complete all of this in a house we had just purchased (we were not moved and still living out of state), and have it done by move-in day. He had adequate time and expressed no worries at all with the timeline.
