We responded to an Angie's List ad for a "Garage Door Replacement" for $799 in September 2015. The contractor -- "Keyed-In LLC", located in Washington DC,, was responsive to our inquiry and Angie's List payment of $799 - and came to our home for measurements. We have two single garage doors, like many homes in our area (Arnold MD). The "deal" was only good for one -- and we had to negotiate directly with the service provider to arrange for the second. Why does Angie's List do this??? The two (identical size) doors were measured and the adviser told us because of low headroom in the garage, it would be $100 more. The Angie's List add did say that "special orders" would be more, so we accepted and paid that. The write-up was performed on an i-Pad and NO COPY of prices, sizes, dates, or signatures as detailed on this device and signed by me on this device was ever provided to me in any form. We agreed on the Model 2000 door for the second one as well, which are aluminum on the external surface and have 1" of foam insulation. Because of our "special order", we were told it would take several weeks to prepare our doors. No problem. We were charged $900 for the second door as well (which is essentially what we paid for the first). We also had to pay a $200 per door extra fee for the upgrade to the model 2000 insulated doors (for both), even though the Angie's List price for the door from them stated it would be Model 2000. We received an invoice on Oct 2, 2015 for $463.14. No explanation was provided as to what it was for, and immediate, online payment was requested. I paid it, Then we were told our order was delayed, and they would be installed ASAP -- around Thanksgiving. They did show up on the planned date, and the doors were not the right size (thus could not be installed at all), PLUS they were the un-insulated model 1000. I guess they were hoping we didn't notice... Re-installation was set for Dec 10. The proper model (2000) was provided, and installation seemed to go OK although it was a workday so I was not able to check the final product before the technician left. The new doors have bigger gaps at the top and the bottom than the old ones did -- because they don't push up tightly against the door frame when closed!! The garage is more drafty than it was before. It seems the right-hand doors are cut a bit smaller than the right hand side, because the shiny aluminum vertical strip along the left edge is completely visible on that door, but not the other. The rubber seals along the bottom of the door do not keep water out. These are my NEW doors. Two days later I received ANOTHER invoice for $463.14 -- dated December 12th, and demanding online payment by Oct 15, Go figure. I send an e-mail to to the key-In office and told them no additional payments were going to be made. I do not wish to have any additional dealings with the company -- and I am in the process of getting a REAL GARAGE DOOR COMPANY to come and properly finish the job. I'll pay for this. DO NOT EMPLOY THIS COMPANY IF YOU SEEK A QUALITY PRODUCT AT A FAIR PRICE!

Dear Member, Thank you for your feedback as it is important to us. We apologize that you were not aware that the initial detailed invoice that you had signed was immediately emailed directly to your email address upon your signature. We will speak to the technician that serviced you to ensure this procedure is made clear to customers. We know that it was frustrating receiving the wrong garage doors, and we were quite frustrated as well and we do apologize for this issue. As hard as we try to get it right 100% of the time, sometimes, as in your case, things are totally out of our control when relying on door manufacturers. Also, upon checking our invoicing system, there are no outstanding invoices on your account, nor did we see in our tracking system that another invoice had been sent out once your invoice was fully paid. Finally, we are not happy when our customers are not happy. We will have a supervisor call you to schedule a day and time to come fix any installation issue to your satisfaction. Best Regards, The Keyed In Team

They sent a trainee (apparently) with a monitor. The examination of the garage door was very cursory and perfunctory. They sold me a replacement cable which I did not think I needed. They were not helpful at all in resolving an issue I had with my remote system. Very unresponsive in looking at anything else.

Dear Member, Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you felt your technician was a trainee that came out with a monitor. Our Garage Door Technicians are all experts in their field. As you were informed on the day of service, the extra person was not a monitor, but was actually a supervisor performing an onsite visit. At keyed In, we believe in visiting our employees and speaking with customers onsite to ensure quality service and outstanding customer service. Also, we believe you may have misunderstood the Angie's List $59 Garage Door Tune-up Deal. This deal only allows for one door to be tuned-up, which the technician explained at the time of service. Our technician offered to inspect and tune-up the other two doors for the additional cost of the service, however, you refused. Yet as a courtesy, he did look at your three motors and informed you why your remote system wasn't working. He then offered to fix the remote system problem for the additional cost of that service, but you refused stating that you would fix the problem yourself. Please keep in mind that the $59 deal you purchased only allowed for a tune-up of one garage door and was not designed to cover costs for tuning up and inspecting additional garage doors nor was it designed to cover repair costs for a remote systems. We do sincerely apologize if this information was not clear. Once again thank you for your feedback. It is greatly appreciated. Best Regards, The Keyed In Team

Professional work and timely service, but fairly expensive for work performed. I also received estimates for storm security doors and found Home Depot does equivalent custom security storm doors and installation for 40% less. Home Depot and Keyed both utilize third party contractors to build customs storm security doors.

Dear Member, Thank you for such a good rating on both our customer service and the actual work that was performed at your property. We appreciate when customers recognize our superior service. We are a bit surprised by your comment that we are fairly expensive since we give each and every customer, including you, an estimate before the start of the job and explain each item. We then give the customer a choice to accept or not accept the estimate with no sales pressure. We had also provided other less expensive options, such as our residential lock, since we know that the High Security locks you had chosen, though the highest secure lock on the market, are also the most expensive on the market. These locks can not be penetrated and the keys can not be duplicate without going through a special process. Also, your cost may not reflect someone else's cost. Cost is determined based on choices, such as lower costing locks to the highest costing locks, previously existing locks on a door and pre-cut holes, or in your case, a door with no previously existing locks and no pre-cut holes, color, material, electronic, etc. Furthermore, the local hardware store that you mentioned, although they may provide custom security storm doors, we can assure you that they are not equivalent to our doors. This is why the prices are significantly different. The grade material, the life of the door, and the overall quality of our doors will far outperform the local hardware store doors, including their custom ones. Finally, we do not use third party contractors and we are sorry that you have put out this mis-informed information. Nevertheless, we thank you for your business and we appreciate your feedback. I have an older garage door that needed service due to a broken spring, so I purchased the $75 deal for "$150 worth of garage door service, replacement, or accessories." The company responded promptly and scheduled service for the coming Saturday, which was impressive response time. The technician called ahead on the day of service before arriving on time. He was very professional and friendly. He promptly fixed the garage door by replacing two springs, two pulleys (I don't know the technical term), and tightening bolts on the door. It looks like good work, but I'll admit to being very surprised at the overall cost. The total bill was $575.50, so with the $150 deal I payed $425.50 out of pocket...the bulk of the bill due to parts. Overall, good service but expensive.

Sometimes I think these "tune-up" deals are just a way to get qualified customers to pay for a sales call. Anyway, the serviceman explained the problem to me (moisture) and showed me how to avoid the problem in the future--and tried to sell additional services and products. Luckily, it wasn't an emergency. (actually, it kinda was) Purchased on 11-23-15 and scheduled for 12-11-15 (much too long!) by what seemed like a national company that refers to locals. Not something I knew, and not something I would have purchased if I had known.

Dear Member, Thank you for taking the time to speak with us over the phone regarding your experience and the impression that we were a national company because of the long wait time for your appointment. We appreciate your time and we thank you for complementing us on our technician’s awesome service. As we explained, we are not a national company and are based in Washington, DC. However, we apologize for your inconvenience due to the appointment being scheduled far out. Our tune ups are a preventative maintenance to help ensure continued reliable, quiet operation and safety of the door; and to keep your door in good working order. At times a door may require more than a tune up, especially if the door has deeper issues. We hope we have brought understanding and once again, we appreciate you taking time to speak with us over the phone. Best Regards, The Keyed In Team

i purchased the service on Angie's List for like $900, but when they came to the house to measure the door I had then, they said the ad on Angie's List was incorrect and that the price I paid was only for a single garage door when I have a double garage door. So I had to pay an additional $450 or so. And I had to take half a day off from work (losing money) to meet the rep for a whole 5 minutes while he measured the door. When they came to install the new door, they didn't bring the door I ordered but said the one they had was a better door. When they unwrapped the door, we learned that it was white when I had ordered almond, and that instead of having an upper section and a lower section, they had brought two lower sections. So they had to modify one of the sections so as to be the upper section. The rep said he would be back the next day to paint the door almond like I had ordered, and I even gave him some paint so he could color match what he would need in order to paint my new door. I have not seen nor heard from him since he installed my garage door. The new door works perfectly and the modification they had to make to the one section to make it an upper was a very minor thing that does not affect the look or operation of the door. The door looks great except for the fact that it is white and the rest of my house does not have a single white thing on it; it's all almond! I'm hoping I hear from them next week but it seems like I'm going to have to contact them myself.

I made a mistake of falling for their "great deal" of garage door tuning, for $59. As I probably should have anticipated - the service visit immediately became a sales pitch for the door replacement. Almost nothing of substance was done to the door. I would strongly recommend to stay away - at least from this "great deal". This is just a paid estimate / sales pitch in disguise. (Please note I am trying to be fair - it is not across the board F; they were indeed very responsive, the gentleman showed up right on time, and was very courteous and professional. This by no means makes up for the zero value service received).

Update - after posting my review on Angie's List, the company finally contacted me, and sent someone out to fix the two problems. Now, 6 days later, the repairs are completed. There was still an issue with the window inserts - they could not provide the almond ones to match the door, but provided white ones. I am going to try painting them and see if I can get them to match. Other than that, the same technician came out and fixed the gap, did it quickly and professionally. Other than the time it took to get back to me, and the different color window inserts, I am satisfied with the overall job and changed their grade.
Description of Work: I purchased an Angie's List Big Deal for new garage doors from Keyed In. I really wanted to give them a good review. They came out originally when they said they would, looked at what was needed and scheduled the work. There were several additional charges, but I felt OK about those. The deal did not say it included the opener, and we did need a new one. They also had to add some braces, and a few other items. |The technician who came to install the door was very professional, and did a good job for the most part. However, I had ordered the window inserts, and one was missing. Also, after he left I realized that there was a big gap between the door and the wall at the bottom. (Big enough to slip my fingers through, so I am not talking about just a loose seal.) I have now called the company about 3 times to get them out to repair the gap, and bring the window piece. I get promises to call me back to schedule, but no call backs. So now I have a door that looks as bad or worse than the old one and that is loose enough to let in not only cold air but probably small animals. I started out very happy with this company, but now am very disappointed.

It was ok I guess. It felt like they did not do much for the $60 price tag, but they did what I asked. During one point, it seemed like the technician was taking a long time, but when I went outside he was just sitting in the car. Checked again a little while later, and it was the same thing. Once he started the work, it only took 5-10 minutes and then he was done. It also seemed that he was trying to sell me more services instead of just performing the work requested. I wasn't that happy with the service or quality of work.

I was very pleased with this service provider. He was gracious and professional. He arrived on time and he agreed with my assessment that I needed a new lock. He showed me what he recommended, told me the cost and then installed both the door lock and deadbolt. He made extra keys for me and also fixed a problem I had with another door that would not close properly. He did not charge me for either of these things. I will definitely call him for any other locksmith issues I might encounter in the future. He gets my highest recommendation.
