How different wood is approached; how wood grain is treated; patterns and age of the wood; sanding techniques; finishing techniques... many steps of care to ensure a final beautiful result. They also broke a glass shade didn't tell tell and I had to confront them about. When I finally got a hold of Bill, as they don't want you talking to anyone else he said he was not surprised and alluded this type of thing had happened before. I asked if he would pay for the lamp and he said he would if it was reasonable. I found a replacement shade after several 2 days of searching (it was vintage milk glass) and the cost was about $50. He ended up tacking on an extra $50 to our service to pad for the loss. Unfortunately, I can't prove this part of it because he never offered us an invoice to begin with.
I had picked Bill's because I wanted the job done quickly and they claimed their work was dustless. Well, the process will create dust regardless and there were some gritty areas, areas with a hair and with a bug that didn't look right. My husband had them come over to fix the gritty area and they came in with high gloss product and repaired it, which now looks funny because the rest of our floors were semi gloss. I was so uncomfortable with the whole transaction that I told my husband I don't want them in my house anymore ever.
Our neighbors across the street reported that they dumped sawdust in our side yard instead of disposing it responsibly. They also left their trash in my front yard expecting me to take it away but took it away a few days after I told them it was their responsibility. In addition, they left an open container of floor refinishing stuff next to my garage.
Nice things I can say is that the patch of floor they repaired was well done and they were on schedule and the floor looks okay. That's about it.
We were scheduled to start on a Tuesday morning. That Monday, I got a call at 8:05 am because the job they were supposed to be doing that day got cancelled at the last minute and they wanted to start mine. I said "I'm not quite ready, I have to move some plywood and furniture" but they were more than willing to help in order to get started.
So they came, helped me move things, and got to work. I had to ask what type of finish they were planning on using, because no one had asked me what I wanted. Bill doesn't do any of the work, just the estimates, but he stopped by one of the days to have a look at the progress. He didn't recognize me right away and said "Who are you?" before I reminded him I was the homeowner.
Summary: they were flexible, cleaned up after themselves, and produced great results. There are some spots where I can see the ring of the sanding disk, but not many. The price came in 7% higher than the estimate, but after seeing how hard they worked I didn't even ask why, I was so happy to have them done.
