Description of Work: Bartlett Brainard Products rebuilt a basement hatchway and replaced the doors about a year and a half ago.

Description of Work: Installed 2 heavy duty, well insulated vinyl, foux wood grain doors as the front door and back door to a porch. The front door was a 2 pane door and the back door a 9 pane. Both had polished brass knobs, handles and deadbolts. Also installed were two heavy duty storm doors for the side front entrance and porch. Both doors are well insulated, sturdy with safety glass and have panes that collapse into themselves exposing a screen (so screens don't have to be put away). B&B also recommended a painter to paint the front and back doors to our liking, inside and out.

Description of Work: Our basement hatchway doors had rusted out, and during heavy rains water was getting into the basement both through the rusted hatchway doors and also over the concrete footing that the hatchway doors sat on (the top of the concrete was roughly even with ground level). Bartlett Brainard came out and looked at the situation before they bid on the job because they wanted to see the situation in person to decide what we actually needed to have done. Cathy Davis runs the business carefully, and they don't just assume that the customer knows what needs to be done to solve a problem. They recommended that the concrete footing for the hatchway be raised about 5 inches with the new hatchway doors being installed on top of that. They removed the old rusted hatchway and some badly done concrete work, built forms and poured new concrete to raise the hatchway about 5 inches. At my request they also delivered the new hatchway a few days before they were going to install it so that I could paint the parts of it that would not be easily accessible after installation (they were very cooperative, reasonable and easy to work with). After the new concrete had cured for a couple of days, they installed a metal cap on the concrete and then the new hatchway doors on top of all that. The original hatchway had been attached to a large piece of sheet metal where shakes had been removed from the house for the hatch installation. That metal sheeting had always been visible, making it look like the original hatchway had been installed hastily and as an afterthought. Bartlett Brainard, however, removed that metal plate, attached the hatchway door assembly directly to the house, and then installed shakes to match the rest of the house and to make it look like the hatchway actually belonged there. In other words, the Bartlett Brainard installation made it look like the hatchway doors really belonged there as part of the house and not as an afterthought, and Bartlett Brainard's work looked a whole lot more professional than the original hatchway they replaced. All demolition and construction debris was removed from the premises at the end of each work day (the overall installation involved two work days).
