My first meeting with the contractor went rather well. I was impressed with his knowledge, courtesy and responsiveness. We met 2 additional times before signing the contract. We were given a timeline and a description of how the process would take place. We were told that we would still be able to live in the house and that our kitchen, master bedroom and master bath would be done last so that we would have access to them during most of the renovation. The contractor told us he would let us know which rooms they would be working in so that we could cover/remove necessary furniture/objects. We were also told that all of our floors, counters, appliances etc.., would be covered for protection. Day one was to be the dining room and 2 living rooms. We cleared those rooms the night before work began. We came home to nothing being covered and they were now working in the kitchen. Mentioned this to the contractor that night and things were covered the next day, but at this point there was already a big mess. By day four, we had to find an alternative place to live with our 2 dogs and cat on short notice due to the amount of dust and the fact that the contractor decided to change the plan and work in every room all at once. In total we were out of the house for 3 weeks coming back daily to check on progress. On the final day of work, which was a Friday, I had come by the house to take a quick look while the workers were finishing up. I noticed a few things that needed to be fixed and then left for the evening. My husband stayed until they left around 8pm. When I spoke to my husband later that evening, he mentioned he gave them final payment. i was not comfortable with that as I wanted a walk thru of the house when all of the workers were out so I could get a better look at the work. To cover our investment, I stopped payment on the check the following morning. Very glad I did as we found many things that were a problem. The biggest was missing jewelry. In my rush to get myself and 3 animals out of the mess the first week, I had forgotten to lock up 5 pair of earrings I had left on a ring holder tray in the master bath. One pair were diamond studs given to me by my father 20 years ago. Upon cleaning the bathroom I noticed that one earring from each of the 5 pair was missing. The second issue was a hole in the fiberglass shower in the master bath which was not there prior to the work. Both issues were brought up to the contractor. The issue of the jewelry, I was told that he washes his hands of this situation and that I must have lost them. As for the hole in the shower, he told us there had to have been a crack in the shower prior to the work. If that were the case we would have had water damage as the very large puncture hole was located on the floor of the shower near the shower head. He did patch it, but it is not the same color. So I now have a constant reminder of this horrible experience. The next issue was regarding the painting quality of the ceilings. We found that almost every room had to be repainted with a 3rd coat. They looked terrible. I was also not pleased with the carelessness of the paint job. We now have to completely repaint the walls in 3 rooms that had just been recently painted due to the carelessness of the subcontracted painters. We had about an inch of white ceiling paint along the top part of each wall. We also found that they ended up using 2 different colors of ceiling paint throughout the house. We only found this out when they came back to complete the work and some of the paint did not match what was already on some of the ceilings. More carelessness. I have also found paint imbedded in all of my carpets as well as on some of my furniture. In the end, the contractor came in and repainted the ceilings that needed another coat and did some edging work on the walls. The edging work was done in the wrong color paint in the rooms that were painted in a neutral color, so we now have to paint every room in the house. Gave me the monetary value of the earrings missing. This does not excuse the bad behavior nor make up for the sentimental value of those earrings. I believe the contractor himself is a decent person, however, the subcontractors he selects to work for him are very questionable.
Description of Work: We were having water damage from the winter storms repaired, which included scraping all of the popcorn from the ceilings and repainting them with a flat surface. We also had to have part of the ceiling removed and insulation replaced in our living room.
