They did a good job. They didn’t end up fixing the problem because I don’t think they snake drains, so we had to call another company. They were able to figure out what the issue probably was, so they diagnosed it correctly. They were very professional and punctual.
Description of Work: We used Handyman Matters South 6 moths ago. They tried to come out and take a look at the clogged drain in our bathroom. As per my request, they cut a hole on our ceiling in the drywall. We recently had a remodel and the issue we had had happened before, and I thought it might have been because one of the drains had fallen. They opened up the ceiling, looked at it and checked to make sure it had not fallen.

Handyman Matters is a problem solver and we strive to service the customer to their expectations. There are some tasks that are best left to companies that do it everyday. I was very pleased with the service I received from Handyman Matters. I called in and scheduled an appointment for late last week. They called me and rescheduled to this morning because the person assigned to my job was delayed on a previous job due to the excessive rain we've had here lately. John arrived on time (even a few minutes early) and handled all of the jobs I tossed at him. He was friendly and professional the entire time. The quality of work seems to be high. In fact, it was clear that doing the job properly was important to him. On the infant gate install, the way our floor molding extends to the stairway meant that the gate would have been installed on a slight angle, which would have made it weaker than it should have been. Rather than simply install the gate, he brought this to my attention and offered a solution--cutting a channel into the molding to fit the gate mount. He did this and even ran some caulk around the gap to make it fit in better. I was very pleased with Handyman Matters and with John in particular.
Description of Work: -Installed two sets of window shade brackets -Adjusted one door to eliminate rubbing against the frame -Sanded and repainted a 2nd door for same reason -Caulked two cracked areas in bathrooms -Installed infant gate at top of stairway -Repaired broken deck stair

VERY POORLY........... INEXPERIENCED WOKERS WHERE IS THE CUSTOMER SERVICE?????
Description of Work: The information I was given as to cost was $110.00 for the first hour, and $17.00 for every fifteen minutes after that. That works out to be $68.00 per hour. I was quoted that the job would take 6 to 6.5 hours to complete. Which would make the cost around $450.00. I was advised that a worker by the name of Dustin would arrive on Monday at 8:00 am to start our job. The job was to remove the old storm, and front door and install new ones. The worker Dustin showed up at 8:30 am, and then talked on his phone while slowly unpacking his truck. He continued to talk, making at least six calls. Then Dustin would spend 10 minutes just putting a new blade in his cutting tool. Then back on the phone. So there is the hour at $110.00. I finally got frustrated and called the main office. I told the office that I was paying by the minute and would like to get my monies worth of work done. Dustin then became short with us and obviously upset that we had called the office. Dustin's boss Sandy came out to check on things after I called a second time for the phone issue. When Sandy was there Dustin talked about gaps around the step plate of the door. We had stated that we had foam or caulking. Dustin stated he did not want to use our stuff, and that he would get stuff he would use at a 35% up charge. This was never mentioned when I set up the job. We told Dustin that we would do the caulking ourself's. Then Sandy left the job. Through out the day Dustin was still on his phone off and on. Dustin stated it was calls from the office about different jobs. WHY IS HE TALKING ABOUT DIFFERENT JOBS WHEN HE IS BEING PAID BY THE MINUTE TO DO MINE?????? By the end of the job it was two hours more than I had been quoted. Proably from all Dustins phone Conversations. I had called Sandy the next day to come out and look at the job, because of the gaps, left around the storm door. She stated that the job was completed, and by a excellent craftsman. (What a Joke) We have a inch to two inch gap all around the storm door, between the brick and the door. We asked Sandy why Dustin had left things this way and she blamed us. She stated that we talked about it. The only issues Dustin talked to us about was the step plate gap. I got the impression that the BILL was being padded, and that these skilled workers don't know what they are doing. We spoke to Lowes door department and was told that a jam extension should of been done. This work was NEVER mentioned by either Sandy or Dustin.

• She provided all materials for the rental property, insisted on materials that she used for the installation of her own door. Member did not want to pay the 35% mark-up. Handyman Matters bills $110.00 the first hour and $17.50 each quarter hour until complete. • I was physically there during the project and spoke with Member while the doors were out of the opening. I tried to speak to her about the voids around the door and at the bottom of the threshold. Member said that she wanted to do that and Dustin was just to install the doors. (I took photos) • I listened to what Member wanted for the outcome of the installation of the job. When I tried to explain the process of the installation and how to fill the void, Member would interrupt and talk over me. She knew better how to do the job. I asked her about how she wanted the void between the brick and the framing of the house filled. Member said to use the expandable foam, which we did. Member was to do all the filling of the nail holes and caulking. She did not want any drywall done. At one time, Member said that she would bring back the concrete caulk to fill in the voids, but never came back. • Member called twice to office saying that Dustin was talking on the phone (10 minutes) and the office was texting him on the phone and he was reading it on her job. In the p.m., Dustin’s afternoon job had to be rescheduled as this job went longer so he was communicating with the office. • Member micro-managed the job and would not allow our employee to use his expertise to do the job. Our Craftsman is qualified to install doors with precision and expertise, but not when the homeowner is directing the project. • I returned after the completion of the job to make recommendations; extend jamb of door to cover void, or use concrete caulk/ patch to fill the void, smooth is out and put a trim piece along the edge. • Frequently, Member would not face me when we were talking, she walked away when I was speaking and interrupting me when I was explaining or asking questions. • When I returned to make the recommendations to complete the job, Member said I was mistaken and it was not true that I spoke to her about filling the void. • I agreed with her that the phone calling should be handled differently and I will work with the office to come up with a better solution • At no time was anything I said or recommended acknowledged or accepted by Member. She was certain that Handyman Matters was taking advantage of her and that we were going to steal her identity. • Handyman Matters did honor the 10% off labor discount to Member upon payment of the job. • I want protection against unscrupulous customers from Angie’s List as I am also a paying customer.

From start to finish, Handyman Matters have been excellent to work with. Glen came out to provide an estimate and among other vendors in the business, he by far handed us the most detailed estimate. He also gave us a complete shopping list. Our project manager, Dustin, did all of the work from start to finish. He was punctual, detailed, communicative and did excellent work. He and Glen called to make sure we were happy with the work performed. There was one minor issue with a tad of paint getting on the white ceiling during painting and Glen would not let us close out business with him (i.e. pay him) until the paint on the ceiling had been covered up and things were truly in order with the new bathroom. We will use them for our next, more complicated bathroom remodel without a doubt.

Terrible! Dustin didn't have the experience or the tools for the job. He used a big pluming wrench on a delicate ring. It now has teeth marks in it. The inside nut that sits above the cartridge is chewed up. I explained at the beginning, that this Faucet is Italian manufactured and he may want to contact the dealer before he began. He didn't take my advice, and that is where the problem started. He hadn't a clue how to disassemble it to even get to the cartridge. He messed around for over an hour... got nowhere. By then it was too late to call anyone... Thursday after 5:00. He had managed to disturb the interior parts to where we had a constant drip on the cold side. He was to return the next day after talking to the distributor at 3:00 pm. Well, 3:00 came and went, he showed up about 5:00. He was able to remove the ring, all be it with nice teeth marks, the handle, and get to the inside but couldn't get the nut on top of the cartridge to budge because he did not have the proper faucet wrench, and that is where the nut was damaged. Finally removing the nut, the cartridge wouldn't budge. Now it is after 6:00 pm. Can't reach the company it is in Chicago. So he tore apart the cartridge, tried to replace with new on only to discover it was the wrong part. Now I have no Kitchen faucet on a Friday night. Went to Home Depot the next day found a replacement with my own money and husband and son installed it. Called Handyman office on Monday explained. They sided with Dustin. I asked for a refund... not even the cost of another faucet which was over $200.00. The messed up Original Mico is well over $500.00. I called Chicago they are sending me new parts at no expense to me. I'm not sure what their decision was at Handyman, I wasn't contacted again. I paid by check. Too bad for me!

Tim arrived on time and explained the options related to fixing the leak in the shower. The work was done efficiently and with skill. Due to the nature of the repair - Tim returned 3 times and was on time and professional at each visit. I added removal of the popcorn on the ceiling after the work began and Tim tackled that project (a very dirty one!) and was concerned that the extensive mess was cleaned to my satisfaction. The outcome was quite good and I will use the company again. In fact, I already have them scheduled for another job later this week.

Job was done very well, and in no time at all. Another handyman had discouraged me from attempting to do this, since there was a cabinet already over the stove, and he said the wall/electrical wiring behind it "would not support a microwave". But how would he have known that without looking at it? Handyman Matters came in and just easily pulled out the cabinet, installed the microwave, put an outlet in, and then framed in the small space still left there above the microwave. I put a cute little basket up there to hide the electrical cord, and it looks great. I will use Handyman Matters again without hesitation.

He charged me $110 for the job. It was a small job. When the deck was installed 12 years ago, three of the bolts were installed in such a manner that it pushed the soffit down. So, he repaired it for me. He did exactly what I wanted him to and he did clean up well. I knew their price before he came out; it was what he had told me it would be. Infact, it worked out to be lesser than what he had quoted. I will definitely use him again in the future.

The service provider from Handyman Matters called to change his arrival times and then called again to change them back. He was not the person the company told me to expect. He did not seem to have any experience with removing and replacing doors which is what I had asked for when I hired him. The door would not close properly after replacing the door jamb (he only used 1/2 of the new door jamb kit) and replacing the interior/ext door. He took it off again and had to drill more holes and recut the jamb to accept the hinges in different positions. He was very forcefully hammering the door jamb trying to make it fit. I've seen the process before when the house was being built and this was not a professional approach. Rehanging the storm door did not go well either. I was there when the the storm doors were originally hung by a very capable man from Lowe's who hung two of the doors for me in 1 & 1/2 hours with no problem because he did it for a living. Unfortunately he only does 1st time installation for doors purchased at Lowe's. The Handyman Matters guy arrived at 10 am and left for a few hrs in the middle of the day to go to another appt. He said he'd be back. He returned and continued to try to force things to work until after 10pm at night. He looked perplexed and frustrated the whole time. I was concerned about the structure around my door frame by the end of the night. I would have asked him to leave earlier and hired another company but I could not just leave an open hole in the house until I found someone. He patched the several holes he made that weren't correctly placed. The whole thing looked very unprofessional when he was done. I was tied to the house all day and night because of his inexperience. I needed to be up very early the next morning for other commitments. A rainstorm a couple of weeks later brought out my worst fears about my experience with Handyman Matters. My door was leaking water into the house as fast as it was coming down. Instead of going to work I stayed home to mop it up with big towels and replace them to prevent water damage to the floor. I called Handyman Matters about the leak. The owner came over and inspected the job. He said there was no caulking placed outside over the top of the new door frame and they would be out to do that. He also tried to convince me that leaks were par for the course during a hard rain. I have never experienced that in my home which is 7 yrs old. Hopefully that will be the end of my experience with them. Lesson learned.

Our Craftsmen are qualified to complete the repairs that they are sent out to do. Unfortunately, when the homeowner directs the project and asks to have things done a certain way, there isn't always the desired result. When our field supervisor went out to inspect the project, he said that the dry rotted exterior trim needed to be replaced. Her budget seemed to be a concern and again did not want to complete it at that time. Handyman Matters has called the member many times to schedule the complete repair of the door opening and address her concerns about the door. She has not replied.

Overall, I think they do not pay a lot of attention to detail. Since my initial report, I have spoken with Handyman Matters regarding my review. I do not have their company confused with another. They offered to send someone else to my house to correct the problems. I declined the offer since I have already corrected the problems. I like that they wanted to make things right, but I also appreciate first time quality even more. Who likes to have people coming back to fix things? However, I believe that they have a sincere desire to please their customers and I am upgrading my rating.

I was impressed with the responsiveness of Handyman Matters. The person who took my call seemed very knowledgeable and understood what I needed done, and knew that to prevent the siding rot in the future, the window mantel would require flashing. Craig showed up on time and was very professional. I provided the materials, including a roll of aluminum flashing for the top of the window mantel--and offered to buy new flashing for the top of the brick mould. Craig said he preferred to use a superior material for the flashing. When I checked on Craig's work, he had already installed and caulked the brick mould and window mantel, but he did not use ANY flashing material. The trim boards were reinstalled, but did not line up properly. He trimmed one of the boards with a saw, and that improved its appearance. To have Craig remove the mantel and siding to install the flashing would have damaged special order material, so I did not ask him to do so. He used excessive caulk on the sides of the mantel, giving it a sloppy appearance, but did not caulk the most critical part on the top of the mantel. He explained he could not reach it, and that my painter could do it. I had my window installer later put a clean, neat bead of caulk on the top. The work is about as good as what the original builder did--acceptable, but did not address the problem that caused the siding rot, and not good enough for me to recommend Handyman Matters to my neighbors. UPDATE: After I posted on Angie's List, the owners of the company called immediately to insure that I was satisfied with the work. I was pleased to hear back from them, they have been very persistant in their follow up which is much appreciated. I am satisfied with their response.

Handyman Matters strives to exceed the customer's expectations. The member expected a long-term solution in the repair of the damage around the window. Our Craftsman felt that he was providing such a solution, but he did not communicate it effectively to him, and he did not obtain his approval of his solution. We have counseled our employees on the need for detailed communication with our customers, and obtaining their approval for deviations from their expectations, along with proper procedure and attention to detail that he should have followed. With his permission, when the weather warms up, Handyman Matters will check the window caulking and take any further action to ensure that the repair is a long term solution, and that it meets his expectations.

I am getting very loyal to Angie's List from previous successful experiences. This is how I found Handyman Matters. I called and was greeting warmly when scheduling to have my work done. Since I am hosting a softball banquet and Thanksgiving here at our home this month; it was gratifying to know that I will be even more proud of our home with the help of Jamie and Handyman Matters. I will be calling them tomorrow to schedule additional projects for next week when two more desks arrive at our home to complete our new home office.
Description of Work: Installation/construction of 3 shelving units (both attached and free standing), repair of staircase bannister, putting together two desks from the Container Store and dismantling an old desk.
