I highly regret doing business with this company. They do not stand behind their work, and they do not subscribe to best practices in the industry. They cut corners that impact the homeowner down the line. I had brand new wood flooring installed and finished 2.5 years ago. Unfortunately, I must now pay another company thousands to fix the very poor work of S & S flooring. Future customers beware that S&S Flooring told me that it is “normal” to have to spend thousands on your wood floor 2.5 years after it is installed and that is why they won’t fix it.

They did A+ work but lacked in communication. Showed up at my door long before I expected which caused me to have to adjust my plans. It would have been helpful to receive a call from them a week or two before they were to arrive to give a me a heads up. Caught me off guard. In terms of craftsmanship, they were fantastic. There were a couple of areas that needed to be touched up and they were excellent about taking care of those issues. I am impressed with the floors and I would use S & S again. The person at the front desk was very helpful in relaying messages to the crew. The only thing that I would do differently however is call them a week or two before the scheduled date to make sure that all arrangements were understood. Something that I hope they would implement in future jobs.
Description of Work: We had new floors laid in two rooms and two other rooms resurfaced and tied in to the new rooms to match stain color.

Project was completed in two phases: 1) bedrooms 2) rest of house. Work was scheduled to begin on 12/8th and 12/15th, respectively. I am very pleased with the work done. They matched the new flooring to the existing kitchen hardwood/stain. It's nearly impossible to tell where the old flooring ends and the new flooring begins. They were able to sand out scratches from the kitchen flooring (kids/pets). I've very pleased with the results, as I was with their work in my previous home. They matched existing with new hardwood. I highly recommend them for hardwood work.
Description of Work: S&S replaced entry tile and whole house carpeting with hardwood flooring. In addition, they replaced several water damaged boards in the existing hardwood in the kitchen, sanded and resurfaced whole kitchen. House size is approx. 1500 sq ft, ranch. (3 bedrooms, hallway, living/dining combo, entry, closets).

Description of Work: I had 500 sq.ft. of hardwood refinished and a few boards replaced. The boards replaced looked good. The finish on the floor was terrible. The sanding job had waves and lots of swirls around the doorways. There was debris embedded in the polyurethane everywhere. Also large drips of finish throughout. Many of the previous imperfections were not filled in. When I complained between coat 2 and 3, one of the workers was extremely rude to me. I decided to be quiet! I did complain to the owner. He came to inspect and said he would take 50% off the price. After a few weeks, I contacted him again, asked for the rest of my fee and he also did that. I was so disappointed with the whole job. He did offer to finish them again for the same price and move my furniture for free. I had paid $600 to move furniture and to cover with plastic with another company. I did not get that money back. It wasn't their fault! And I don't want S and S to finish my floors again.

They did an excellent job!! I couldn't be happier with my new floors and the process. They were very courteous and professional from the beginning. Everything was done as planned and on time and at cost. I also splurged for the inset heating vents - lovely. We paid the extra to have items wrapped - blinds, kitchen etc. and that was worth the cost. There was still some dust, but that should be expected with any project of this type. There were a few scuffs on the walls, but nothing that Mr Clean Magic eraser couldn't take car of. All in all I would recommend them again.
Description of Work: We have an older home (1910) and needed to replace all the old fir flooring - about 800 sq ft. Had them refinish existing red oak flooring (installed 25 years ago by the same company) in the kitchen and then interweave that floor with new red oak flooring throughout the house, including closets. Also had them install a new threshold and molding. They also had to do a special wraparound my antique fireplace tiles. Work also included cutting down some doors.

The floors were in really rough shape. The Sales/Estimator arrived when he said he would and gave me a written estimate. Their most professional tradesmen did a superb job to bring them back from the brink. The floors now look extraordinary. The crew was timely and communicated with me throughout the whole process. Excellent Job!-Scott

TERRIBLE!! In December 2010, we experienced a leak from a refrigerator valve. Because we had a fairly new prefinished exotic wood floor and we had numerous connected rooms with wood floors, the insurance adjuster determined that the entire floor (1500 sq.ft). should be replaced. We hired a contractor to complete the work (and repair other damage). I requested them to use the company that had originally done an incredible job installing the floor 12 years ago, Rock Solid Hardwoods. They said they'd use their sub-contractor, S&S, who was one of the best in Denver and they knew that we'd be very pleased. In February 2010, we moved into a hotel for what was supposed to be 1 1/2 weeks of work. When most of the wood had been replaced in the kitchen, it was VERY apparent that the wood was defective and the installer hadn't noticed it. After waiting days for all the involved parties to look at it, it was determined that, as was obvious, it was defective. After more delays, they finally obtained what they said was enough wood to remove the bad wood and finish the project. They again removed the defective wood and began re-installing the floor. When they were about half way through the project, it was very apparent that there were very large gaps between the boards. They told me that it was no problem....they'd putty in the gaps and refinish the floor on site and I'd be very pleased....defeating the whole point of replacing a prefinished floor! Again, we waited for all the involved parties to look at it and determine that the installer had been putting the staples in crooked, resulting in the gaps because boards couldn't fit flush together. In trying to clean up some glue on the floor, the installer used some type of cleaner that removed some of the finish from the wood, and proceeded to walk in it. After my numerous requests to install the wood with glue as is standard practice, they left very large nail holes in numerous places. It was also very apparent, at that point, that they wouldn't have had enough wood to finish the project anyway. In addition, they used their saw inside our home, which made a huge mess, particularly on textured walls. At that point, after 8 weeks of our family and puppy living in a hotel, we finally told the contractor to fire S&S and start the project over with the original installer, Rock Solid Hardwoods, who did an incredible job of replacing the floor. Our contacts with S&S employees were very negative. They tried to blame others for everything, including blaming us for being being "too picky". They spent most of their time trying to place blame rather than solving the problem. If you want a quality floor job, STAY AWAY FROM S&S.

Response from S & S Floor Surfacing Inc.
As noted by the customer the flooring was defective from the manufacturer. The customer was encouraged to go with another product, but was persistant on useing the nova teak that was mis milled. She was advised to stop the project and proceed with another product. S&S installed everything to meet or exceed industry standards. Also what should be noted is that the member was not happy with the product that she chose and that S&S advised against useing on more than one occasion. S&S has been in business since 1958 and try to provide the best customer service and product possible. Also what should be noted is that S&S recieved $0 dollars for this project and had over $15,000 dollars invested in materials and labor. S&S felt it was best to give her the flooring and collect no monies.

I think they did a very good job. Roy and JR were a great team. They started on a Monday (although a little later than I expected) but were prompt after that. The process started on a Monday and was finished at Noon on Friday. They answered my questions and were very professional and thorough in their work. I opted to use the vendor they recommended to put up plastic to keep the dust down. I felt they were a little expensive ($500) and I'm not sure I'd choose to use them again. They seemed to have too many jobs going, and for a few days they were late which caused the floor people to adjust their schedule. I have used S&S in the past and plan to use them on another home next month (although w/o the plastic)
Description of Work: Our floors were 6 years old. They sanded our floors down to the wood, re-stained and applied three coats of polyurethane to our floors. The price included $500 for a dust mitigation program through an outside vendor.

Overall we were unhappy with our experience with S&S. The in home estimator recommended that we pay to have the baseboards removed to prevent damage during the sanding operation. We agreed. The day the job began, the workman arrived and recommended against removal of the baseboards as he felt there was no need to do so. He also stated that the small powder room commode and standing pedestal sink would need to be removed or he couldn't complete this area, but he could try and blend it in. I was on my way to work that morning and asked him if he would pull the sink and commode. He said he could not do that due to risk of breakage. I ended up pulling the commode out myself and had to leave the sink in place as I was already late for work. We spent 5 days in a hotel while they completed the job due to the mess and fumes that would occur during the job. When completed we found that there were several areas of puddled polyurethane sealant that looked like water on the flooring. Additionally, stain was applied sloppily and was on the baseboards (different color), drywall and doors. We called to discuss the matter and to their credit they didn't argue about it and made an appointment to come out and fix these items. We had also caused a scratch in the floor by pulling a vacuum cleaner on the hardwood and agreed to pay to have this fixed as well. This meant re-coating the entire area. The fix to the flooring made it worse. The original finish was requested to be a matte finish and was, but the entire floor was now in a high gloss. The puddled areas looked like they were scrapped off with a razor blade leaving a sharply defined edge and some of the stain was removed as well. Now these areas really stood out and looked bad. No attempt was made to re-stain the damage or sand down the scraped areas to smooth out the edges. Three different areas were missed during the re-coating and due to the difference in gloss, also stood out. We called them up again and they asked to come out and see the work. Again, to their credit, they didn't argue about it and agreed it wasn't correct and said they would fix it. They did need to re-coat the entire floor area again and that required we again move out for a few more days due to the fumes. The third attempt was acceptable enough to complete the transaction. The finished floor has areas where the mechanical sanding marks are visible in the powder room and near doorway. No attempt was made to sand these areas by hand if the machine could not reach into the area leaving the surface somewhat unlevel. I would recommend that you pull the baseboards when refinishing, not to protect them from damage so much as to prevent wicking of stain and polyurethane into the joint that makes an unattractive dark outline along the baseboards. Overall our experience was a disappointment. While Rick was courteous and responsive, the workmanship was below standard. We would not use S&S again in the future.

The employee on this project was released. He was given an oppurtunity to correct the issues and failed. The customer was given an additional coating at no charge. S&S demands and expects high quality. Sometimes this is not always the case and we try to do what is right and be fair to our customers. We understand that without happy customers we would not be in business.

S&S installers were very meticulous in their work and always called whenever they were going to be a little late. Around the stairwell and banister railing, there were some existing strange intersections of the existing wood structure, and the installer very thoughtful and carefully cut floor boards to create a careful match. The floors and stairwell look great. The installers were very courteous and thoughtful in everything they did. This company is top notch.
Description of Work: S&S installed 2 1/4'' Red Oak tongue and groove floors on an existing plywood floor base and finished the new floors with three coats of finish. They also stripped and refinished the painted treads of the staircase. They installed plastic to keep dust out of the rest of the house and cleaned up carefully upon completion.

The blending of the new hardwood with the old was seamless. It all looked the same. The stairs were less than perfect, they tore up the side runners and didn't fix it. I had to fill in cracks and repaint. While sanding the existing floor, the guy lost control of the sander and cracked the drywall on a window frame. I had to point it out to the supervisor, who offered to cut some cash off the bill for the damage, I accepted and had someone fix it.
